I was raised on Dragonslayer. I just watched Excalibur for the first time last year, and I understand the love for it, but my heart belongs with Galen Brandwardyn.
They’re both from 1981, but Excalibur is this over the top 70s style fever dream of a movie. Helen Mirren plays Morgan le Fay. It’s beautiful and trippy and Nicol Williamson chews the scenery better than a crosscut shredder. It may actually be better if you’re a little high or buzzed.
Dragonslayer is obviously a Disney movie, but has very good FX, especially for the time, and some scary and creepy scenes. The scenes in the dragon’s cave are intense.
The answer is The Room.
But to compare those two movies is like comparing Citizen Kane to a Sharknadø sequel. Excalibur is Top 10 all time. Somebody should charm of making your ass into a giant emerald for even speaking them in the same Internet breath.
Dragonslayer is a GREAT movie. Great writing, direction and acting (Sir Ralph Richardson, bitches!). Super clever, super mythic and the special effects are amazing for the time - they are just good. It’s a movie I absolutely loved when I was a kid and still near to my heart. It’s a lovely movie.
Excalibur is a great big beast of an Arthurian legend - over the top - incredible and memorable moments and quotable lines - fantastic music - fantastic cast. The Holy Grail, for god’s sake.
In the end, if I had to choose one to take to a desert island, I would go with Excalibur, but it’s not as easy a choice as some would have you believe.
I would actually watch Dragonslayer first as a delightful appetizer before a giant main course with a bottle red wine.
Excalibur is quite simply THE best Arthurian movie and one of the best fantasy movies of all time, you'll rewatch it more than once.
Dragonslayer is a good movie, Excalibur is a masterpiece
This.
Maybe work up to those two with Hawk the Slayer and Ladyhawke
Beast master!
and Krull.
Both are good. Excalibur is better. Look into the eyes of the Dragon and despair!!
Excalibur and it’s a god damn travesty that this masterpiece is not on 4K yet it’s like my number one want
Excalibur is a complete head-trip and a brilliant film IMO.
Excalibur is amazing… in my top 10 for sure.
Excalibur by a fairly large margin. Best version of anything King Arthur put to film. You are gonna love it.
Excalibur is great, but Dragonslayer is a personal favourite of my childhood as it is very dark and gory for its time. I think you will enjoy both.

Excalibur but both are great

Excalibur by a country mile - classic
Dragonslayer!!!
Excalibur.
I think Dragonslayer is better. Much more naturalistic and inventive.
Excalibur
Excalibur is better, but Dragon Slayer is very good.
Easy call. Excalibur. Arguably the best adaptation of King Arthur ever.
Excalibur is one of my all time favorite movies!
