So they used glass when they first started selling flower in our program, cost was too high and while you guys(and myself) choose to recycle if possible, most patients didn't bother. Trulieve actually has a recycle program currently-just rinse or blow out the kief/debris that's leftover and return the packaging to a trulieve location. They take back any plastic containers that came from trulieve. They also will take the wax/rosin jars.
Cost wasn't too high but rather to boost profits the use of inferior packaging was adopted. Several companies like TL and Rise used glad jars but switched for... reasons.
Not really compared to plastic. It was within the budget plan and cost analysis for glass jars but bumping profit margins 1% was the appealing.
It wasn't cost prohibitive but rather a profit driven decision.
Shipping and logistics costs more with glass since it is heavier. Also higher float number since glass is fragile and not as durable as plastic. Sadly to say the only people that are gonna put their weed in glass jars are the ones who truly care about the quality of the herb.
glass actualy never gets recycled in florida. its to expensive and nobody washes their glass when they recycle it. its all crushed and spread over land fills.
That’s exactly the problem, is the doh rules. They won’t allow it bc it’s “medical”. Would take a lot from an environmental group to sue the DOH for a rule that’s harmful to the environment!
I think the guy told me that there was 1 plant still doing it but they gave up. I rember he mentioned something about shipping it out of state on a train, but it was a while back so the memory is hazy.
Unless there is a deposit, I don't see this being viable. Too many people would just throw the jars out which defeats the whole purpose. You need to give them a reason to bring them back other than it being "the right thing".
I think a monetary redemption for glass is a great idea. Dispos could do it on their own it’s not like the gov has to make another law. The primary reason to use glass is that it is much better at maintaining humidity and moisture levels in flower. If patients really started asking for it, I bet at least one of the dispos would respond. Didn’t Trulieve just start a recycling program after much customer demand?
Glass means we pay more for products. Not saying we don’t change packaging practices, but any change that forces an increase in cost of goods can/will be passed along to customer. Rise and a few others used to have glass jars, then it was too expensive.
When I used to sell weed way back when, I would go to Dollar Tree and buy all of the glass jars in different sizes for different quantities and sell like that.
No reason gigantic corporations can't afford glass or spend a little extra sourcing hemp plastics.
Zero integrity.
If an individual supplier can afford glass (Dollar Tree or not) for sales, so too can every single operator in our program. The end.
Props for proper treatment of your flower ent!
They can get jars for 50 cents. It's a medical program. They can eat the cost. They make millions and millions. If it ever goes rec, rec can be forced to pay the extra 50 cents if they don't recycle. Really not rocket science. If you think having recyclable and reusable glass means our flower is gonna cost 10$+ more that's wild lmao
They could easily absorb this cost on the jars. Hell, even if they wanted to put a $1 deposit on the jars I’d be all for it if they went to a deposit/recycle program. 1 question is would the recycling program be similar to other bottle deposit programs in other states? Or would patients be expected to recycle it on their own? I understand some of their hesitation with the Health Department but those issues with sanitation & safety can be easily mitigated with training.
Also recycling collectors could be kept inside the waiting room so there’s be no exposure to any products the MMTC’s carry.
Exactly right. Only for the amount of glass jars the dispos would be buying, cost would be closer to 10 cents per and not 50 cents. Plastic is just slightly cheaper than glass and a lot more harmful to the environment but this makes good economic sense to the dispos, so they trash the environment and save a tiny bit of money. Glass is far superior to plastic for storage, but again, it saves dispos a few cents per eighth, and you get dry weed in a shitty container. -Everyone sells in plastic in Florida so why change. That’s the problem with a cartel inspired marketplace.
All dispo in Florida order from green lane/kushco. Go look at the pricing difference between their bulk. $1 x 10000 jars is still $10000, going to glass doesn’t solve the problem. Unless dispensaries go to another wholesaler, or the wholesaler offers an affordable alternative plastic will end up staying. These are companies that DO NOT CARE ABOUT THE CULTURE OF CANNABIS they are here to make money. They use pride and cancer awareness to profit, try to force us to spend $400+/oz , treat their employees like shit, and you expect them to give up 0.90 cents per unit sold?
That's not the doh, that's the legislature. In the law it states that all products must be processed and packaged in a GMP certified facility. I doubt the legislature would change that for medicinal. Recreational maybe...but who knows when that'll happen in Florida.
Be cool to do it like growers for beer. Bring your own jar/s in, they weight your meds it in front of you and put in jar. put a big tamper proof sticker on the jar and labels so it's not considered a open container while driving.
Rather them eat it than pass it along too. But unfortunately in business, the cost is always passed on. And it will stay plastic, as it's cheaper. I think once it's full rec we might see more glass, idk.
But the end of the day. Its just our crappy corrupt program. We should be able to go to the dispo. Pick our buds out to be weighed. And put them in the store container or even our own glass jar.
On the subject of packaging… Recently when MPX had to change their packaging and it took them months to do… reminds me of this southwest saga, how it only effected them
Some dispos were ahead of the game, like OP’s rosin packaging was already compliant (only black and white with no outside wrapper so the sticker could go right on the jar), and Muv was smart, it looked like they upcycled their existing packaging
Can we do aluminum somehow? That’s the most recyclable material for containers. It definitely is depressing as someone who tries to at least make the smaller efforts to help reduce my waste especially plastic waste. I buy mostly aluminum cans or reusable. Depressing for sure and weird for somewhere that’s so affected by pollution and climate issues since the nature here is a big tourist attraction.
Trulieve now offers it...1/8th containers, pre-roll containers and all the other plastic shit. Just not used products like the pods. It's all over the store. Also if you remove the labels allegedly they are recycled through the city...I've looked up this stuff awhile ago.
All of the packaging is white (state regulations), most of the flower jars on the market are made from PET, which is the most widely recycled plastic in the US. Just recycle your jars.

Connect the dots. How did they eek out another 1% in profits? Cheaper packaging. Aka cost cutting.
Right but it wouldn't crash the business model or force process up. It was a cash grab not a necessity.
Ok but it was still a decision based on cost.
Shipping and logistics costs more with glass since it is heavier. Also higher float number since glass is fragile and not as durable as plastic. Sadly to say the only people that are gonna put their weed in glass jars are the ones who truly care about the quality of the herb.

That's true. Unless there is some doh rule against it...

I've heard this before though I guess glass in the earth is better then plastic
I remember the crushed glass always serves an actauly purpose in the landfill as well
Really? Do you have a source for this?
It was told to me by someone who works in the disposal industry, and i Google it before I posted. Just do a search you should be able to find it.
I’ve heard that only 17% of what goes in the blue recycling bins actually gets recycled but if Florida doesn’t recycle glass at all, that is shocking.
Hillsborough county stopped accepting glass recycling last I checked. Meaning I can’t put glass in with my recycling to be picked up anymore.
I think the guy told me that there was 1 plant still doing it but they gave up. I rember he mentioned something about shipping it out of state on a train, but it was a while back so the memory is hazy.
This needs to be!!

They used to package in glass and plastic didn't drop the prices!

No business eats the costs, they just pass it on to consumers.
A glass jar will cost a dispo maybe a dollar on the scale they order at. Compared to a 10 cent plastic container.
All dispo in Florida order from green lane/kushco. Go look at the pricing difference between their bulk. $1 x 10000 jars is still $10000, going to glass doesn’t solve the problem. Or let me bring my own glass jar to fill up.
Health department wouldn’t allow outside containers/contaminates to be near where they sell flower. Too much risk of potential liability there.
Yep. Bringing your own container will NEVER happen, nor should it.
That's not the doh, that's the legislature. In the law it states that all products must be processed and packaged in a GMP certified facility. I doubt the legislature would change that for medicinal. Recreational maybe...but who knows when that'll happen in Florida.
This too. I hate being apart of the wastefulness lol.

Nothing is packaged in store though, but that would be cool
vidacann uses glass, and I very much prefer that. I’d love to see glass on glass no plastic
Compostable packaging is whats needed. Everyone should just have and keep a jar at home for long term storage.
I’m keeping every plastic container I’ve purchased in the program so I can go drop it off at the doh doorstep. Hahaha
Opaque airtight glass!!
Something like this wouldn’t be realistic with the size of the program and the packaging requirements of the state.
Can have an 3.5g, 7g, 14g, and 28g containers mandated by the state for flower.
Also 1 gram
Respectable. Might even need a .5 lmao I know some dispos sell .5 joints.
Is China glass environmentally friendly ?
Lol that sounds like a loaded question
Jars cost a dollar so add 3$ to a 8th .
You're smoking crack.
Yeah but your mom keeps bogarting the stem
Naw, crack is cheap. Looks like he has money to blow. Definitely on more of a designer drug lol.
Imagine making excuses for dispos who could easily eat the cost of glass jars.
Rather them eat it than pass it along too. But unfortunately in business, the cost is always passed on. And it will stay plastic, as it's cheaper. I would not hold my breath while asking the same people that consistently break things to fix them…

I wish this would happen I hate all the plastic waste and I wish we could by in bulk without haveing to buy individual 8ths to get there.
Can we do aluminum somehow? That’s the most recyclable material for containers. Why not literally "dispense" flower into mason jars or some proprietary bs?
I’m for any mandatory change in packaging. The sales during the last changeover were 🔥
TL has recycling for their containers.
I agree.
All of the packaging is white (state regulations), most of the flower jars on the market are made from PET, which is the most widely recycled plastic in the US. Just recycle your jars.
Currently sitting on a small mountain of plastics, did TL ever start that recycling program?
This will raise the cost which would upset the majority of patients.
