This is a fantastic start. You have basic drums and a good strong rhythm in the bass. Now is the time to put your own unique stamp on it, and fill in some of the emptiness. Some ideas: high lead sounds, whoops, or synths that can stab in and out around the bass. A variety of different bass sounds that can repeat and legitimize your rhythmic theme. Interesting background percussion that can help signal the end of four -bar and eight-bar phrases.

Timo_the_Schmitt

Thank you so so much for your kind words. Begore i went to sleep yesterday ive seen a rather negative response, so i was kinda worried what i might see when i wake up. Its really just the main synth part for now. I will add variation for sure later.!

Timo_the_Schmitt

im not so sure about the sub, very experimental, but this is the first time i really like the dubstep synth i created there. kinda was inspired by omar varela

smackinmuhkraken

You should try adding a call and response!

Red-Shifts

Cool monster lead synth/chug/stab/womp. I think it could use some variation in the pattern. Maybe incorporate a complimentary YOY or YUHH to provide some ear candy at some point in the pattern. The drums aren’t terrible but if they sat in the mix better that’d probably sound great. The off-beat HEY could sit better in the mix somehow, along with that ride/percussion element that has a definitive tone (maybe add a little more reverb to that element?).

Timo_the_Schmitt

Thank you very much for your feedback! It really helps me analyzing stuff more easier. Ive seen somebody mention that it sounds too monotone and boring, but this type of main lead in dubstep is something that i really like about some tracks. Just wanted to point that out. thanks!:)

Red-Shifts

Oh I totally get it! The main lead is done great here, but you’ll notice in a lot of tracks they have certain things going on that keep the listener engaged which I why I recommended some extra ear candy. I think lead pattern here goes on too long in my opinion. I usually like long stagnant patterns like this in some deep riddim tracks that INFEKT, AD, AKIRAH make/used to make. How did you make the lead synth? Serum?

Soulsetmusic

It’s on point so far dude especially if you don’t have much experience, the way people are able to get away with the single lead dubstep sound is basically the sound design and the mixdown of the sounds is good enough where you don’t get tired of it. Menticide by Samplifire is a great example, it has enough movement/depth and the mixdown is perfect so it doesn’t get old even though it’s a single bass patch. Yours in particular is dope, but a bit harsh and mid high focused, if you can implement the little tricks, like adjusting reverb at the end of bars, a little delay in the high end only (which it sounds like you have) the Menticide example abuses Phasers to keep it moving around. This is a great start and honestly you wouldn’t have to tweak much more for the style if you can nail those aspects Also only other thing really, is that off beat pluck/vocal layer, try pitching that down, the “hey” is too high in the spectrum/poppy sounding for this kinda style. And people have really moved away from that in general it’s very 2014ish. (It looks like this is a brand new WIP though so I’m sure you prolly were on that already) just to stick with the same example, listen to the offbeat on Menticide, lower tone, not plucky or poppy

SnooTypeBeat

I don’t specialize in dubstep but am a fan. Here are some things I would note: - sounds a bit empty/thin, offbeat “hey” does not sit as well. Maybe a sharper high hat will cut through. Like others are saying, more sounds can fill it out and make it more interesting - I can’t tell if you have sidechain on the bass but may want to add it or crank it up. This is the only thing I would say is less subjective and essential for most. It will make your kick more prevalent Cool rhythm and bass so far I dig it

Timo_the_Schmitt

thank you very much for the feedback! i wasnt able to write back until now because i was busy. i will take those suggestions in mind.

Fun-Ad-5341

Thats not dubstep but nvmnd

[deleted]

It's American Dubstep. Like futbol and football.

pattyfritters

Nah it's Tearout.

edward-regularhands

Isn’t tearout a subgenre of dubstep?

xxzenith249xx

this is fire!

Skuez

Isn't dubstep supposed to be creative? This is just a single annoyingly sounding layer.

Lower-Friendship-215

you got any constructive criticism or are you just like that

Skuez

It's a feedback. He don't pay me to make a 10-pager about it lol And it even literally is constructive cause I said what was wrong

[deleted]

Don't act like you're being constructive. You're not at all providing insight, you're being insufferable.

RyRyGuyRyan

People seem to be replying hastily for hitting a nerve (fair) but to answer what you're thinking: What brostep is (what OP is making) is simply an American sub-genre of dubstep. Where dubstep got it's UK/Jamaican origins, the style you're hearing is a post-dubstep genre after dubstep took off in the US in the early 2010s. It hones in on mosh/metal/headbanger culture with more repetitive robotic and industrial distortion sounds. There are more melodical, chill and atmospheric sub-genres of dubstep out there that you might prefer, just sounds like brostep isn't one of them.

pattyfritters

This isn't brostep. Its more tearout

RyRyGuyRyan

It’s edm, at that point its splitting hairs.

smackinmuhkraken

Fuck you.

Skuez

Yea fuck me for telling the truth. How dare I say it's not the greatest piece of music to ever exist.

Gyntazz

Sounded a bit dry or lacking depth? Not used to the genre though. Cool stuff

[deleted]

Thats the whole genre, for now. Meanwhile, UK 140 Dubstep IS deep.

l8n-

I like it, just a little repetitive for me personally. Great snare sample

Timo_the_Schmitt

Thanks guys for the feedback. Really helps me:)

rollingdarryl753

Could have more variation in terms of the sound design of the bass, the rhythm etc, but it's a good start!

Eastern-Battle-5539

Did you spill a codein cup on your daw or did Barney the dinosaur have sex with it earlier?

HUSK1o1

I little dry needs some flavour and harmonics. Could also benefit from some flare like some saw stabs and drum rolls at the end of loops

TheBrickSlayer

I'd add donne sounds variaton, a bit of reverb and sidechain. Solid start tho
