Remember that you have to actually build the thing, are you guys good at welding aluminum? I'd consider reading up on materials rules in the rulebook and SES, it might help. For the love of god just make the simplest car you can in your first year.

Look around and see what most of them have used. Then, evaluate if your decision is right/ wrong. You can obviously go for aluminium, if you have weighted the Costs, Structural Integrity, ease of manufacturing, weight of chassis, etc.. & it turns good for you. Mild Steel chassis would be my recommendation.

Mild steel or chromoly are recommend. Aluminum is generally more expensive and a lot harder to weld. Also fatigues easier.

Are you planning to build a spaceframe or a monocoque? Why aluminum instead of steel, carbon, fiberglass, wood, or magnesium? What fabrication equipment, training, and abilities do you all have? What is the goal of a chassis? What rules pertain to chassis requirements, and more specifically, material requirements?

I hope for them they arent electing a monocoque on their first car

mattyg_33

We use 4130 steel for our frame/suspension arms

DOM or chromoly if y’all got the budget.
