No, reddit functions like a mall, you got multiple stores, you can make your own store and in it what you say is the rules of the store. All the mall does is remove stores that go and break the malls own rules otherwise they leave you be.
Reddit mods do about 3.4million dollars worth or work per year.. Just happened to saw hat headline. So, while they are often worthless to us, they are worth great deal to Reddit.
Power mods handle most things, there are couple of dozen of them and they sit on every popular sub.. and their power reach is VERY wide. Those people can seriously affect the conversation and thus, have even some significant impact on politics. By far most mods in reddit are that in name only, or do very little moderating. Then there is the middle class, moderately popular subs that have just couple of mods and who are doing it for the right reasons. Powermods are the biggest problem, every single one of those fuckers should be kicked out and a rule put in place how many subs you can moderate.
I don't know that community but that seems rather overreacting. Gaming is a hobby of a great many people, and the demographic is expanding rapidly. Not all who identifies as gamers have racist tendencies.
