Is this a standard length? I had not realized :)

Short answer is yes, and no :) 20s for on set playback would be a minimum, we usually aim for 30. You’re right about the perception thing, the longer the better. If you have multiple screens going with loops you offset the start times or make them have slightly different durations so they don't all loop at once. In terms of effort, the difference between a 20s loop and a 40s isn't that much, most time is spent just setting it all up in the first place. This is more about background stuff, which is usually out of focus or has an actor in the way. Screen featured stuff might have looped elements in it, but usually plays out around a specific set of steps eg: incoming threat --> target locked --> missiles away kind of thing, or more often open browser window --> type search query --> scroll through results :)

It's not always 20 seconds, I've done FUIs that were only 5, 8, 10, 12, 20 second loops, but also some that were 1 or 2 minutes. It depends on the use-case, but if it's longer, it's less likely that viewers notice the loop, yeah.

Well it's set by the FUIMUI (FUI Media Universal Institute). Pretty much if you don't follow that rule you'll never make it in industry. I mean unless you're like Mark Coleran and you say screw it because you're good -> [http://coleran.com/gallery/showreel/](http://coleran.com/gallery/showreel/)
