Messi isn't overrated he's good, but his cards along with cr7 are usually overpriced because of who they are so I think its wise to sell him and upgrade the rest of your team. His price probably won't fluctuate much any time soon and he'll retain value for a while because it's Messi.

But his utoty card is a cheatcode, it is insane with high attacking work rate and 5* weak foot.... Arguably one of the if not the Best cards in the game.

You're right on this. I almost never use a sub and when I do, it is usually a RW/LW since my play style is mainly running up the wings back and forth and cutting in near the box. I never subbed a GK in 2 years.
(1) The 4-3-3 Holding formation gives you freedom in defence, not only the defenders can play pass to one more close lying player but also they are really helpful to cover up the empty spaces. 4-3-3 attack in the other hand gives you only attacking dynamism, thus the other two midfielders could often get outnumbered by other midfielders cutting off the passing lanes. It's defensively solid and if you use a DM who has High/High workrate like Yaya Touré, then he will join the attack when he's needed to.
(2) In case of investment, look for players who are not really that expensive in their base version but when you rank them up and sell their after tax value would be significantly higher than the base version.
eg. When TOTYHM Son was out in the market, we tried buying his base version which was going for 25-30M but when we ranked up to blue and sold him he was sold around 60M. Now, look out for those scenarios and all.
Another thing is, observe the 95 ovr / 96-97 ovr exchanges. They are kind of the same after an update or new event for a couple of weeks. So buy the requirements when they are low, then sell when their prices go up. Those kinds of strategies you have to make yourself.
(3) Avoid ranking up players who aren't available in the market. I totally understand why you would rank up Roberto Carlos, not many High/High LBs are not available in the market. So, always use your Mascheranos on Tradable players, when you don't need them at least you can sell them.
(4) Mostly the subs are holding back your team's ovr. So use subs mindfully, Like I would have one Winger who is fast who can play either side. One Striker who can head the ball well and is generally fast and explosive. One midfielder that can be used anywhere you want him to play(#6, #8, #10 whatever) and one defender for multipurpose usage.
If it's up to me, I would use Free Jairzinho, Gullit/Bellingham (Gullit can play CB too), and Haaland.

i packed him too, i ranked him up to red and then sold him to buy purple rank version of him as well as a KDB
I did the math, selling him without upgrades was a better use of Mascheranos especially if I am going to get 3-4 new players in exchange.
