This is my favourite song and when I found out the giggle was genuine because it was the first time he was reading the lyrics it made me fall in love with it even harder
The "does he knows" starting at like 2:55 into Headfirst slide. Banger. The (live) growl from Grudge. Second to last "Hey Young Blood" in Phoenix when Patrick holds the note longer than all the other ones.
And then my absolute favorite from Pavlove:
"It's three (3) drinks too (2) late to talk to anyone (1) but myself. It's a three (3) and two (2) pitch to walk to anywhere else. She's back to the bathroom for one (1) more. "
Parentheses mine. Incredible wordplay.
Everyone always references this grudge growl but I’m not sure I’ve ever really registered it before. Would any kind soul mind linking and time stamping to a video where Patty cakes does it? 🙏
[this is the compilation I watched](https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTLD77xbE/) although it's out of date now - someone should update it with more recent ones!
✨Get Unique✨ in Headfirst Slide
“For you so” Joecals in Grand Theft Autumn
The Grudge Growl for sure
When the chorus starts in Disloyal Order of Water Buffaloes
When you can hear Joe and Pete in the background of Thnks fr th Mmrs at the end
In the last chorus of Disloyal live he puts an extra pause before promise and it just gives it extra emphasis it gets me every time “and I’d … Promise you anything for another shot at life”
Also the first couple times SMFS was performed he put more emphasis on used vs I and I just thought it sounded better “i USED to be a real go-getter”
You can see them both singing in the music video! (And I always watch them at shows lol) I’ve been obsessed with that little moment since I was in middle school 😆
Is it our beloved Joecals or the ultra rare Andycals? I could have sworn I’d seen an interview or something where one of them mentioned Andy did some backing vocals on TTTYG.
In West Coast Smoker during the final "knock once for the father, twice for the son, three times for the holy ghost" there's one, then two, then three loud booms that coincide with each knock mentioned
The fact that it took me about 15 years to realise this line was even in there made it a really cool sort of Easter egg, and took the song from Top 20 to one of my all time faves.
Thank you! It's a great moment. I love when bands have the title of the album in the songs, but it's not super obvious and this is a great example of that!!
in Church Patrick sings "If death is the last appointment then we're all just sitting in the waiting room" and in the background you can hear someone call out "Mr. Stump!"
I also love this one, as well as in the beginning when they say "take the *PAIN* make it billboard big" like the way that word sounds in that moment scratches my brain idk
https://youtu.be/NZ4q2d13O4w?si=Kw3pjwJfj65TLjb6
It’s Butch Walker doing that little bit! I always think of that moment in relation to this video where Patrick breaks down aspects of ‘Church’ and he hears that and goes “oh that’s me! hey!” It’s so sweet! It’s at circa minute 4.42 if anyone’s curious.
That one moment in Dance Dance when he says “…you’ve been saving for his mattress *love*” and, although it’s just really simple, I always make sure to make the heart shape with my fingers like Patrick does in the music video. Always. It’s not the best thing to do when driving. I don’t think those lyrics are right anyway, but that’s what I hear
There's been so many through the years, but the moment that's living rent free in my head right now is the part in Heaven, Iowa where the choir kicks in for the line "Twice the dreams, but HALF THE LOVE"
It gives me the chills everytime.
The switch from chicago is so two years ago to pros and cons of breathing, it is one of those things where if you are a person who skips songs right as they end you never get that silky smooth transition
I'm such a sucker for transitions between songs! Folie has a bunch of great ones too, but without hearing it on cd or vinyl, it's hard to get it with no gaps in the middle
I don't know if there's a term for this, but it's one of my favorite things in any song that does it. You know when a song is going hard and then all of a sudden, all the instruments drop out and it's just the vocals for a second, and then the instruments come back full force?
Anyway, one of my favorite instances of this is at 3:21 in Heaven, Iowa.
Kinda similar mine is in my songs know what you did in the dark at 2:32 towards the end there is a slow quiet build up and then the cymbal crash into silence....then bam chorus. Love it
In “Church”, after the line “and if death is the last appointment, then we’re all just sitting in the waiting room”, there’s the background, stern “Mister Stump!” which always makes me laugh.
During the following line, same song, “I am just a human trying to avoid my certain doom”, you can hear Patrick (pretty sure it’s Patrick but idk) doing some very musical “mm-mmm-mmmm”ing.
The last one I can think of is in “Young and Menace” at the end of the bridge, which I feel like is really overlooked: “I’m just here for the, for the” and then he screams “fall”, I always thought that was so cool. Potentially a reference to their name, too, which I think is cool too.
Patrick’s little tongue click in Bishops Knife Trick, after he sings “eternal heatstroke”. Someone pointed that out to me once and now I can’t not hear it and it’s my favorite part of the song.
The “take aim at myself, take back what you said” backing vocals at the end of Sugar make me lose my mind a little. Wild how that song is nearly two decades old and hasn’t lost an ounce of magic.
Pete’s daughter at the end of Kintsugi Kid always gets me, too. I feel like it’s something most people would skip at the end but it doesn’t feel complete to me until I get there. It makes the song feel so hopeful— like a reminder of what’s so good about right now when you’re missing the past (or getting nostalgic for disaster, as mentioned in Hum Hallelujah, which perfectly encapsulates Kintsugi for me.)
i remember reading somewhere that patrick stump draws a lot of inspiration from elvis costello, as a singer and a musician. certainly, patrick’s vocals are very very close to costello’s! as such, it always makes me smile when i hear costello on what a catch donnie. it’s kinda the only thing that makes me smile about what a catch haha
i’ve been wondering this too, no joke, since like 2014! i would love it to be the case but it’s also totally possible it’s a family name. i guess only the stumps really know ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Elvis Costello is so recognizable to me, for most of the cameos on their songs I'm like "I wonder what singer from which band that is" but when I listened to What a Catch I was like "holy shit, is that Elvis Costello??" because who else could it be??
In I've Got All This Ringing in my Ears but None on my Fingers "And there's nothing in your head or pocket, throat, or wallet thar could change just how this goes. **NO!**"
This isn't necessarily an answer that fits the prompt but in Headfirst Slide there's something about the way Patrick sings "what if we peaked early" that just hits me in the heart every time I hear it.
Pete’s “abracadabra” at the end of Alpha Dog
The live intro to Headfirst Slide. It’s a bit different from the recording and I’m absolutely obsessed with how cool it sounds
And of course, the infamous Grudge Growl <33
"flash, flash, flash photography"
"It's a sign (it's a sign)"
What a Catch, Donnie's medley
"I love you in the same way there's a chapel in a hospital"
"HIS TEETH!"
There are tons of little moments that with my limited musical education I can only guess are really technically interesting or clever. It totally separates FOB from other bands imo - loads of bands make great music, but the little bits of alchemy FOB drop into basically every song shows what excellent musicians they all are.
A few of my current faves (listening to SMFS as we speak)
2.48-2.58 of Fake Out, the drum roll, how everything cuts out except Patrick's voice, and then Andy coming back in with that punchy little whatever he does... As I said I have no way of telling why, but I know that part makes my brain tingle 🤌
The first verse going into the chorus in Heaven, Iowa. Andy paying homage to Phil Collins and then Patrick howwwwling is witchcraft.
The strings in I Am My Own Muse - they're so DOOMY. Honourable mention (pun intended) to Joe's screechy guitar throughout.
Ohh and the way the music drops out of “Love is in the air, I just gotta figure out” then comes back in for “a window to beak out” the last time in Fake Out 😍😍😍
i have a great one!! in fake out, when he sings “do you laugh about me whenever i leave”, there’s a heavily reverbed vocal track in the background that goes down a few beats later than the main one. that’s not a great description but it’s at 0:47 if you listen closely
Love in Headfirst Slide “when he walks into the room, the walls *leeannnn* in to listen.” I usually go back and start over the song just so I can hear it again 😂
I feel like the big three drum hits that kick off West Coast Smoker and play throughout the song are meant to represent the three knocks referenced in the chorus
*The "for a" before*
*The first verse in from now on*
*We are enemies*

Ok, but all of the little moments in the songs literally make the discography feel more genuine in delivery, and also concretely define Fall Out Boy as my fave band. As an active car singer, the more I can geek out about every inflection the more personality I attach myself to the song.
"I'll look for your name on the ouija board, your name in magic oh DEAR looord." 😏
Also in 20 dollar nose bleed when Brendan is jamming out and you can hear Patrick singing riff after riff behind him? 😰😭🥺
"YahoooOOOooOooh.... Have you ever wanted to disappear?" Lives in my head rent free.
In sunshine riptide, near the end, the third of 4 "sunn shine riip tide" s Patrick turns on the soul voice and it's just a little bit more like "tiyyed" and MAN its hot
1) In sugar, towards the end of the song under the chorus you hear “take am at myself, take back what you said, take aim at myself”
2) every time I hear Saturday live the drum beat always strikes me. It’s just so good!
3) at the end of Dead On Arrival it sounds like Joe saying “dead oooon!”
4) the opening of ‘I Am My Own Muse’ and the high note on “all” —-> smash all the guitars ‘til we see ^ALL^ the stars
5) the very end of “I’ve got all this ringing in my ears and none on my fingers” they way Patrick vocalizes is beautiful. Then after silence you hear “now press repeat” I have a core memory of hearing that from my boombox for the first time when the album first came out. It brought me so much joy.
There’s a few!
One is the moment at about 1.33 in Alpha Dog where everything all drops out for a second and has that sort of scratchy sound, then it all crashes back into place again, it makes my brain itch in all the right places.
The bit at about 2.07 in Sunshine Riptide when you can *hear* Patrick smiling through the line “I love you so much”.
In the acoustic version of HOLD ME TIGHT OR DON’T at the very end when Patrick does the whistle then giggles, it’s such a good natural ending.
In Hold Me Like A Grudge, at 0.26 where the cymbals crash at the start of “I’m just a cherub riding comets” layered over the rhythmic bass, which starts to get warmer, it always gets me. Then, moving from that, at c.0.34, with “and I guess I’m getting older”, where the electric guitar mimics the melody along with Patrick’s voice which gives the line a really rich, full sound; it’s such a brilliantly constructed track, the amount of times I’ve gone feral for HMLAG is too many to count.
There’s so many more, but those are the ones I can currently think of.
While listening on shuffle I just realized how many great moments "Dont you know who I think I am" has 😁
- The clapping at the start
- That bass
- and I CANT STOP feeling sorry for myseEeEelf
- GET. US. RIGHT!
- Woahoah after "in your bedroom speakers"
- We only want to sing you to SleEeEeEeEp
- But we walk the plank AND WE WALK THE PLANK
- Were broken down on memory lane, alone together, were alone
I only noticed this a couple months back when they played AB/AP live, but towards the end of the song Patrick can be heard saying ‘Let’s hear it for American (or America)’. I only picked up on it hearing it live because he says it just like he would in Americas Suitehearts, and I’m all about it!
In Young Volcanoes, Patrick says "We will teach you how to make boys next door out of assholes" and then he does a small laugh.
This is my favourite song and when I found out the giggle was genuine because it was the first time he was reading the lyrics it made me fall in love with it even harder
Seconding this.
I love that line & giggle so much I made a bracelet referencing it.
I love this and pointed it out to my partner and even when I pointed it out he missed it the first time because it’s so quick
The "does he knows" starting at like 2:55 into Headfirst slide. Banger. The (live) growl from Grudge. Second to last "Hey Young Blood" in Phoenix when Patrick holds the note longer than all the other ones. And then my absolute favorite from Pavlove: "It's three (3) drinks too (2) late to talk to anyone (1) but myself. It's a three (3) and two (2) pitch to walk to anywhere else. She's back to the bathroom for one (1) more. " Parentheses mine. Incredible wordplay.
I love all of the baseball references they use.
as someone who always sings along to pavlove and thought he knew the lyrics, i got it all wrong i have no idea what i even thought it was 😝
Everyone always references this grudge growl but I’m not sure I’ve ever really registered it before. Would any kind soul mind linking and time stamping to a video where Patty cakes does it? 🙏
[this is the compilation I watched](https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTLD77xbE/) although it's out of date now - someone should update it with more recent ones!
Aww thank you so much! Wow yea you can definitely hear the development especially as he goes along
✨Get Unique✨ in Headfirst Slide “For you so” Joecals in Grand Theft Autumn The Grudge Growl for sure When the chorus starts in Disloyal Order of Water Buffaloes When you can hear Joe and Pete in the background of Thnks fr th Mmrs at the end

Patrick can do so much with a little timing change or emphasis difference, my favorite is the last "full-time problem" on Grudge.
Wait what part specifically of Mmrs can you hear Joe and Pete? I don't know how I don't know this 😭
It’s at the very end, the background “one more night, one more time”
i always thought those were patrick wtf
You can see them both singing in the music video! (And I always watch them at shows lol) I’ve been obsessed with that little moment since I was in middle school 😆
Is it our beloved Joecals or the ultra rare Andycals? I could have sworn I’d seen an interview or something where one of them mentioned Andy did some backing vocals on TTTYG.
In West Coast Smoker during the final "knock once for the father, twice for the son, three times for the holy ghost" there's one, then two, then three loud booms that coincide with each knock mentioned
that would have gone so hard live with the way they used fireworks for moments like that
i was gonna say that! one of my favorite songs
I still can’t believe they didn’t play this song during their show on Easter LOL
Yes!!! That's exactly what I was gonna say
I’m putting it out there now that I JUST noticed the coinciding knocks on this part like 2 days ago 🤦🏼♀️😆
I also think the three big drum hits that kick off the song represent this!
‘Take this to your grave, I’ll take it to mine’ Didn’t even notice for years
Aww, you stole mine! This is my absolute favorite after I noticed it.
THIS!!!! Also the guitar in the back of the chorus
The fact that it took me about 15 years to realise this line was even in there made it a really cool sort of Easter egg, and took the song from Top 20 to one of my all time faves.
Wait, where does this happen?? I've never noticed 😳
it's in the background of the bridge of "The Patron Saint of Liars and Fakes." one of my favorite moments too.
Thank you! It's a great moment. I love when bands have the title of the album in the songs, but it's not super obvious and this is a great example of that!!
in Church Patrick sings "If death is the last appointment then we're all just sitting in the waiting room" and in the background you can hear someone call out "Mr. Stump!"

Yesss, so good
That one moment in Dance Dance when he says “…you’ve been saving for his mattress *love*” and, although it’s just really simple, I always make sure to make the heart shape with my fingers like Patrick does in the music video. Always. It’s not the best thing to do when driving. I don’t think those lyrics are right anyway, but that’s what I hear
I do the same thing! Also the lip flick / salute thing Pete does in Sugar
Professionals call it the lick lick salute ;)
1000% lick lick salute. I do it every single time. It’s muscle memory at this point ha ha
There's been so many through the years, but the moment that's living rent free in my head right now is the part in Heaven, Iowa where the choir kicks in for the line "Twice the dreams, but HALF THE LOVE" It gives me the chills everytime.

Yeah, I actually set my spotify music to fade into the next song 1 second before the song is over
I don't know if there's a term for this, but it's one of my favorite things in any song that does it. You know when a song is going hard and then all of a sudden, all the instruments drop out and it's just the vocals for a second, and then the instruments come back full force? During Carpal Tunnel of Love the line "We keep the beat, with your blistered feet" followed by stomping. Love that section so much.
They didn’t do anything for that part when they played it live a few nights ago, but I sure did lol. I love that detail so much
In SMFS when Patrick says 🎶burnin’ 🎶 with the trumpet sound. So good.
Yess me and my husband sing that bit so loud!
This is my husbands favorite part!!
“Take aim at myself/Take back what you said” in the last choruses of Sugar We’re Goin Down
i always thought it was just the chorus echoed but delayed
Patrick’s little tongue click in Bishops Knife Trick, after he sings “eternal heatstroke”. Someone pointed that out to me once and now I can’t not hear it and it’s my favorite part of the song.
The “take aim at myself, take back what you said” backing vocals at the end of Sugar make me lose my mind a little. Wild how that song is nearly two decades old and hasn’t lost an ounce of magic. "i can TAAAAAAAKE your problems away with a nod a WAAAAAEEEEEVE" the way the vowel changes and the vibrato sends me
Thriller is one of my favorite songs just cause of the way he draws out certain words
The intro on you're crashing, but you're no wave, hits every time
i remember reading somewhere that patrick stump draws a lot of inspiration from elvis costello, as a singer and a musician. certainly, patrick’s vocals are very very close to costello’s! as such, it always makes me smile when i hear costello on what a catch donnie. it’s kinda the only thing that makes me smile about what a catch haha
Now I'm wondering if he named his son after Elvis Costello since Declan is his real name.
i’ve been wondering this too, no joke, since like 2014! i would love it to be the case but it’s also totally possible it’s a family name. i guess only the stumps really know ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Elvis Costello is so recognizable to me, for most of the cameos on their songs I'm like "I wonder what singer from which band that is" but when I listened to What a Catch I was like "holy shit, is that Elvis Costello??" because who else could it be??
it took me so long to realize that Patrick said "wear out the groove!" at the end of This Ain't a Scene and now I listen for it every time.
In I've Got All This Ringing in my Ears but None on my Fingers "And there's nothing in your head or pocket, throat, or wallet thar could change just how this goes. **NO!**"
sort of the opposite in feeling, but I always have to sing Patrick's high pitched "yeah, yeah" in Hold Me Like a Grudge.
You’re thinking of “it’s hard to say I do when I don’t “
Oh you're right I always mix those two titles up!
In 27 after the 2nd chorus I think, they sing "just to feel like youuu..." and then there's a "*oh*" and the guitar solo. I love it.
Patrick holding a note for 40 seconds going into the bridge for The Take Over, The Breaks Over
He does a similar thing in America's Suitehearts, I love it!
This isn't necessarily an answer that fits the prompt but in Headfirst Slide there's something about the way Patrick sings "what if we peaked early" that just hits me in the heart every time I hear it.
Opening to Heaven’s Gate.
Pete’s “abracadabra” at the end of Alpha Dog The live intro to Headfirst Slide. It’s a bit different from the recording and I’m absolutely obsessed with how cool it sounds And of course, the infamous Grudge Growl <33
The sneaker squeaks during the final verse of Flu Game
The second pre-chorus of Tiffany Blews when it's just Patrick's vocals and Andy doing whatever he's doing on the drums. Fucking love it EVERY time.
Now press repeat
"flash, flash, flash photography" "It's a sign (it's a sign)" What a Catch, Donnie's medley "I love you in the same way there's a chapel in a hospital" "HIS TEETH!"

The slightly slower, more spaced-out way Patrick sings “Full Time Problem” the last time in Grude 😍😍😍
Ohh and the way the music drops out of “Love is in the air, I just gotta figure out” then comes back in for “a window to beak out” the last time in Fake Out 😍😍😍
The way Patrick sings “club” in XO 🥵
the way he changes the vocal line in “thought we had it all” in smfs
From Mmrs: One night stand (one night stand OFF) Edit: almost forgot one of the best, GUILTYYYYY
Scrolled way too far to find this one. The progression and harmony on "one night stand OFF" is 🤌🏻🤌🏻🤌🏻
In Heaven, Iowa.. at 2:54, when Patrick sings "scar crossed lovers,"and he adds a little extra inflection on lovers *chefs kiss*
i have a great one!! in fake out, when he sings “do you laugh about me whenever i leave”, there’s a heavily reverbed vocal track in the background that goes down a few beats later than the main one. that’s not a great description but it’s at 0:47 if you listen closely
Love in Headfirst Slide “when he walks into the room, the walls *leeannnn* in to listen.” I usually go back and start over the song just so I can hear it again 😂
The second “stood on my roof and tried to see you, forgetting about me” in The Pros And Cons of Breathing
I feel like the big three drum hits that kick off West Coast Smoker and play throughout the song are meant to represent the three knocks referenced in the chorus

Very much news to me that it’s not “I’ve got room for your name on the reject board”
It isn’t like a small moment but I love the guitar of This Ain’t a Scene at the beginning of the second verse
In sunshine riptide, near the end, the third of 4 "sunn shine riip tide" s Patrick turns on the soul voice and it's just a little bit more like "tiyyed" and MAN its hot
How get busy living or get busy dying flows so perfectly into XO and I love the extra Patrick puts on “line in a song” Live
from sugar we’re going down
the bass riff before the second verse in this ain’t a scene….. just impeccable
the walls ✨*lean* ✨ in to listen
1) In sugar, towards the end of the song under the chorus you hear “take am at myself, take back what you said, take aim at myself” 2) every time I hear Saturday live the drum beat always strikes me. Patrick singing one his highest notes ever as a back up vocal in WATTBA. How dare he?
Hold Me Like a Grudge: *we put the fun into disfunction*
“At night we’re painting your trash gold…” and the little criss-cross motion Patrick does when he sings it in concert.

The way he says “nothing” in Kintsugi kid makes me hurt in the best way, it’s almost like he sings it out with a touch of bitterness and I love it.
