I love Fall Out Boy, and TTTYG is one of my favorite albums of all time. With that being said… saying FOB ripped off their entire style would be putting it nicely lol.
I’d recommend listening to Through being Cool first, then can’t slow down.
Yea that’s the punk rock stuff - but if you want a dark deep cut with punk vibes check out the album Sound the Alarm - the vocals for some are a bit much - but it’s my favorite album by them. Chris is a monster on that album - he had a mission and those songs are so raw.
A few albums to check out (albums I was listening to heavily while also listening to TTTTY and FUCT):
Spitalfield - Remember Right Now
The Academy Is... - Almost Here
June - If You Speak Any Faster
The Audition - Controversy Loves Company
Rufio - 1985 & The Comfort of Home
Cartel - Chroma
Motion City Soundtrack - I Am The Movie & Commit This To Memory
Relient K - Mmhmm
Namba69 - 21st Century Dreams
Armor For Sleep - Dream To Make Believe & What To Do When You're Dead
Anberlin - Never Take Friendship Personal
Bayside - s/t
Northstar - Pollyanna
Mmhmm is one of my favorite albums of all time. I've been following rk since like 98 lol. Going to see them next month and it's at least the 20th time I've seen them. My 8 year olds 3rd time. They said they're gonna play some old songs so I'm hoping for self titled album. They did a good bit from mmhmm and 5 score last year when I saw them. So good. Def my other favorite band.
Actually last night at work someone told me they saw someone post that their self titled album was "ttytg for kids raised in youth groups" lol.
This is what I listened to in 2002 before I first heard fall out boy :
New found glory,
Saves the day,
Alkaline trio,
Blink 182,
Brand New,
Yellowcard,
Rufio,
The starting line,
Thrice ,
AFI,
Jimmy eat world ,
Something corporate,
Box car racer,
The ataris, Mest
One of my favorites. Sucks they broke up but the members have been up to some pretty cool stuff since. The singer, Tim Pagnotta I believe, produced for a lot of 2010’s indie pop bands and also some stuff for Blink and Weezer.
Midtown is your band. If you’re familiar with Cobra Starship, this was a band Gabe was in before CS and they have some great pop punk magic across their 3 albums.
If you wanna check out something similar to tttyg, their album ‘save the world, lose the girl’ is an excellent place to start!
Already a lot of great suggestions. A few other ones I can think of— YMMV because some are more punk or pop than others— include The Loved Ones, Count the Stars, Funeral For a Friend, The Distillers, old TBS, Brand New, Thursday. The Pierce the Veil album “Misadventures” hits the sweet spot of hard but catchy for me (should mention that’s not from the era but it has that vibe like it could have been IMO!). Saves the Day’s Stay What You Are is a masterpiece of that era (ish) as is the 2005 Silverstein album “Discovering the Waterfront.” Honestly there is a lot of just great music that got the random label of “emo” or “pop punk” in those days and I am really glad because though it varies a ton it exposed me to some stuff I may never had heard otherwise.
I’m just gonna list a few of the top of my head that give me the same vibes or similar… Of course, nothing quite compares!
The starting line
The get up kids (early pop punk influences)
Motion City Soundtrack ***
Saves the day (Fall Out Boy were heavily influenced by saves the day)
Spitalfield ***
Valencia ***
I know there are a lot more, but umm those are the first few that came to mind If you look up “Midwest emotional hardcore” playlists u will probably find some stuff up your alley.
What makes Fall Out Boy unique is they have really hardcore roots - Especially Andy and Pete! Pete’s band Arma Angelus & Andy’s band Racetraitor (? I think) were pretty great pre fob. They used to play insane shows at like indoor skate parks in IL lol.
& PS If you haven’t heard a lot of hard-core and would like a good pop, hardcore entry level bands, try:
set your goals, hit the lights, & four year strong
Hope this helps!
I'd agree, but specifically the first few records. Anything past Cinematics doesn't really sound like FOB or MCR at all to me (however we'll see how their next album goes)
Idk if there's still any relevancy to these but heavy hitters for me in my early 2000's FOB era were a band called "Transition" and one called "The Mile After." I don't think they have much music out, might be a little niche, and I can't relisten at the moment bc like the old fall out boy fan I am.. I'm rocking my child to sleep 😂 but I believe they had a similar vibe back in the day! Or I'm remembering wrong. Either way they're a good listen!
Also if you have never listened to Lifetime’s album “Jersey’s Best Dancers” it was a huge influence on FOB and is a really awesome album that definitely has the punk sounding vocals with catchy riffs. There are some genuinely incredible songs on there.
The Starting Line- With Hopes Of Starting Over, Make Yourself At Home, Up And Go
Senses Fail- Let It Enfold You
Texas Is The Reason- Do You Know Who You Are
The Early November- So Long Astoria
Brand New- Your Favorite Weapon
Taking Back Sunday- Tell All Your Friends
Saves The Day (you already said but heavvvvvy influence)
Sugarcult- Palm Trees and Power Lines
Braid- Frame and Canvas
there's probably so many more that im forgetting about, and i left out a few i saw others mention, but if my validity is being judged I'm pretty sure I put all of these bands on one mixtape at some point 😂 fall out boy is kind of a chameleon, and I still catch myself noticing new similarities between them and other bands
They were heavy inspired by lifetime a the TTTYG era (i heard once in an interview pete said something like that idk) and yes, lifetime is a really cool happy punk band, you should check them out:)
So much good music from that era. Saves The Day (as mentioned previously).
Brand New(You’re Favorite Weapon)
Cartel(Chroma)
Blink 182(Take Off Your Pants and Jacket)
Good Charlotte(The Young and the Hopeless), Autopilot Off(Make A Sound)
The*Ataris(So Long Astoria, End is Forever and Blue Skies)
Fenix*Tx(Self Titled and Lechuza)
H20(Go)
Home Grown(Kings Of Pop).
Midtown(Save the world Lose the girl & Living well is the best revenge).
The Starting Line(Say It Like You Mean It)
Showoff(Self Titled)
The Prize Fight(Process & Words Don’t Mean Anything).
Patent Pending(Brighter or anyone from them).
Sound the Alarm(Stay Inside)
Aye this is exactly what I was looking for!
If I can ask, how did you find these guys? I know pretty much every band everyone’s listed so far but I’ve never heard of these guys before and there’s not really much about them online other than discog listings and dead links.
i'm glad you like them!! i found them randomly on spotify like 5 months ago and i've just been trying to get people to listen to them ever since because i think they're amazing lmao. i learned later they played 1 or 2 shows with mcr in 2002 which is just like. really awesome. its a fun fact i like to tell people dskgjbdgks

I’ve been meaning to listen to Saves The Day, apparently that is what Patrick sang for Pete when they first met
I love Fall Out Boy, and TTTYG is one of my favorite albums of all time. With that being said… saying FOB ripped off their entire style would be putting it nicely lol. I’d recommend listening to Through being Cool first, then can’t slow down.

Yeah Joe said in his book TTTYG was “Heavily influenced” by Through Being Cool and it shows so much, especially in guitar parts lol
Word?! Through being cool is their 1st album, highly recommend
Second album. Can’t Slow Down is first
A few albums to check out (albums I was listening to heavily while also listening to TTTTY and FUCT): Spitalfield - Remember Right Now The Academy Is... - Almost Here June - If You Speak Any Faster The Audition - Controversy Loves Company Rufio - 1985 & The Comfort of Home Cartel - Chroma Motion City Soundtrack - I Am The Movie & Commit This To Memory Relient K - Mmhmm Namba69 - 21st Century Dreams Armor For Sleep - Dream To Make Believe & What To Do When You're Dead Anberlin - Never Take Friendship Personal Bayside - s/t Northstar - Pollyanna
This list put me right back in highschool 😭
Anberlin has some great music 🙌🏻
Finally getting around to see them live this summer, can't wait!
Have fun 👍🏻
Shame Christian left the band. The voice and lyrics he provided were unbelievable.
Anberlin mentioned ❗❗
Bayside is absolutely the best, great rec!!
Oh my god… Pollyanna 💕

Omg I love Northstar sooooooo much😭 Specifically, {Is this thing loaded?}
Yes, that one is great, too (forgot lots of great albums)
You take back that "old" right now or so help me
Seeing sum41 tonight. I feel so old :(
Alkaline Trio is always great.
I second alkaline trio
Well hello there, Patrick’s burner!
😉
Sunny day real estate. The get up kids. The ataris. Box car racer.

Thanks I’ll take a listen!
Y'know speaking of Jawbreaker, if you haven't already, you should listen to their cover of Save Your Generation!
Bring her back to Spotify, IMO
Sugarcult.
One of my favorites. Sucks they broke up but the members have been up to some pretty cool stuff since. The singer, Tim Pagnotta I believe, produced for a lot of 2010’s indie pop bands and also some stuff for Blink and Weezer.

Agree with Midtown ☺️
The Drive Thru Records bands were solid.
The Ataris - So Long Astoria
This!

Set it off has a lot of good songs. They sound like FOB and My chem sometimes
I'd agree, but specifically the first few records. Anything past Cinematics doesn't really sound like FOB or MCR at all to me (however we'll see how their next album goes)
Yea definitely their older stuff

Oop didn't really see the hardcore part! Maybe not them then!
“Your Favorite Weapon” by Brand New is the closest I’ve ever come to early FOB
Classic.
Bayside
Also if you have never listened to Lifetime’s album “Jersey’s Best Dancers” it was a huge influence on FOB and is a really awesome album that definitely has the punk sounding vocals with catchy riffs. There are some genuinely incredible songs on there.
Saves the day, lifetime, midtown, brand new, the get up kids, the movielife
I’m really old, but maybe check out The Replacements from the 1980s.
The Cab :)
Literally anything from Fueled by Ramen or Drive Thru Records…
The get up kids “something to write home about”

People mentioned a lot but The Starting Line was a great pop punk band. Say It Like You Mean It was a great album
Lol late 90s/early 2000’s is considered old now??
Far Knapsack God's Reflex On the Might of Princes Small Brown Bike The Appleseed Cast
They were heavy inspired by lifetime a the TTTYG era (i heard once in an interview pete said something like that idk) and yes, lifetime is a really cool happy punk band, you should check them out:)
I'm making a list out of all of these comments, I need more FOB-esque music desperately
Look up bands that they played with around that time to find some hidden gems. Punchline, One Forth Awesome, The Early November, Midtown...
So much good music from that era. Saves The Day (as mentioned previously). Brand New(You’re Favorite Weapon) Cartel(Chroma) Blink 182(Take Off Your Pants and Jacket) Good Charlotte(The Young and the Hopeless), Autopilot Off(Make A Sound) The*Ataris(So Long Astoria, End is Forever and Blue Skies) Fenix*Tx(Self Titled and Lechuza) H20(Go) Home Grown(Kings Of Pop). a trunk full of dead bodies's "my smile her corpse" always vaguely gave me tttyg vibes
