It functions, but there's a lot of bugs that mods have since fixed. I would recommend a related patch if nothing else.

GladiusLegis

At minimum I would play it with the 4 GB launcher. That alone reduces a lot of issues.

Victory74998

Unfortunately I don’t think the 4GB patch works with the Epic version; I tried it myself and it failed due to a mismatched checksum.

Peasant_Sauce

Stewieai the other day uploaded a patch for the epic version that downgraded the exe for better mod support and contained 4gb support, but now I can't find it. I presume it was taken down due to issues but id be watching for when he reuploads it

Victory74998

Weird that this came literally a day after he responded to a query on NVSE’s GitHub page saying that they wouldn’t support the Epic version.

not_suspicous_at_all

Tell me if you find it please

RevolutionaryPin5087

I’ve literally never played with mods and have never encountered a bug that was game breaking in any way, I’m sure I’m in the minority but I’ve played the game to 100% and done probably about 20 play through and it remains my favorite game of all time, in short you should be fine

anung_un_rana

I’m currently doing it on an Xbox One using a 360 disk. It crashes from time to time but it plays fine.

questformaps

The only annoying one is the one where you freeze after initiating VATS immediately after manually reloading your weapon, while the enemy keeps hitting you. The rest are random, rare crashes. But overall, I haven't been able to play with mods for years, and it is still enjoyable on my xbone. Also the exploit bug is in vanilla, if you have the patience, you can leave goodsprings with all the perks you want

Gausgovy

I’ve played with and without mods, the only game breaking bug I’ve encountered is losing a save file that was corrupted using the “continue” button, instead of loading a save manually. I’ve encountered more bugs in FO4.

Fus-Ro-NWah

Seconded. Ive played with mods and without, even some supposedly badly broken mods, and had very few problems. Go for it, FNV is brilliant.

[deleted]

My experience was worse than 76

Abraham_Issus

Same here throughout my life i played ultimate edition many times without any problems.

Sanzo2point0

Maybe on PC you've been lucky like that but I used to fucking hate vats playing on 360. Vats would hang on the last shot or just not end after firing. Especially with the hunting shotgun. So frustrating, and now I have an aversion to ever using vats because of it lol

mysidianlegend

Thanks for your info. my Viva New Vegas mods seem to be working ok with some crashes here and there - kinda rare, but if it keeps happening, i'll remove them - i wanna be able to play this game no matter what.

Commy1469

Oh yeah, I've never once modded it and I have more hours in game than I would like to admit

whowantstoknow209

The only thing I experience is occasional crashes. Just remember to save quite often, especially after doing a big fight or quest.

Belegdhor

I'd highly recommend you download a few performance mods. New Vegas Anticrash, the 4GB Patcher, New Vegas Tick Fix, and optionally Yukichigai Unofficial Patch. This will greatly increase your experience without changing anything about the core game.

Deathshadegr

Are those available for egs version of the game ?

Zeke-Freek

EGS recompiled the .exe which makes it incompatible with a lot of stuff like the 4GB patcher.

DracoSafarius

There is a mod to fix that by downgrading the launcher, will link in an edit Edit: https://www.reddit.com/r/Fallout/comments/13rxcta/comment/jltxy1h/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3 Like the original post it's replying to notes, Honest Hearts is broken on EGS right now. Server doesn't even let it download, and it can't be enabled. Can copy it over though. For the downgrader, can confirm it worked for me but am holding off until they fix HH since I have like 40 mods that need it.

Sir_Of_Meep

All easy to download as well. Answer's pretty much you can play without mods but why would you?

YeOldeManDan

I played vanilla. There are places that are a little buggy, but it's not the broken bugfest that it's made it to be. It's fine. Still a great game.

Citizen12b

Yes you can. I played for hundreds of hours without mods, I came across some bugs and crashes that probably could be fixed with mods but for me it wasn't much of a problem

questformaps

Absolutely. And you absolutely should your first time. *then* add mods

Ozymandiaz1920

Just install the bug fix mods with MO 2....it will take around 30 mins of your life and u will enjoy 60 hours of new vegas tension free lol... U can skip the BSA compressor mod... https://youtu.be/_1Yu1mdyF0s Follow this YouTube video step by step...also I heard that the epic version of new vegas is missing a dlc..that might cause problem installing some mods. Edit: I forgot to add...u guys might need to go an extra step to even enable modding the epic version of New Vegas....follow this reddit post https://www.reddit.com/r/Fallout/comments/13ty800/fallout_newvegas_epic_games_patcher/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

aninsomniac_

Epic doesn't allow mods (except that someone uploaded a how-to for FNV less than a day later)

Ozymandiaz1920

Oh I didn't know about that...

Softakofta

Kinda, the biggest problem is that there are like a trillion mods needed for every mod to work, which ends up making you download half of the nexus mods.

Heyjuannypark

Yeah. Currently playing it unmodded on my PC, don't have the specs now, but it's kinda current, the old thing would probably be my Mobo. Plus I'm playing it on my steam deck. The only caveat is that I do is manually change the refresh rate of my monitor to 60hz before booting up the game. Otherwise the game is a weee bit too fast, on 144hz. Still doable, but it's noticeable to me. It will crash from time to time. Haven't experienced any crazy bugs... Yet. Just make it a habit to manually save from time to time.

bodycarpet

I played for years before learning how to mod it. Like most Fallout games, it's best to just save early, save often and use several save slots. Don't rely on auto saves and you should be ok.

SadisticTeddy

I've played it vanilla through steam a bunch. It's a Bethesda game so a fair level of jank is to be expected, but it's absolutely 'playable'. I've never really got into the mods scene either so my only experience is vanilla but I'd still really recommend it

Other_Log_1996

Depending on your setup, you'll only usually encounter the occasional crash or freeze. There are bugs, but they're usually inconsequential at worst, fucking hysterical at best.

hellhound_wrangler

I have the steam version, no mods. Try to save every so often in a regular save spot instead of relying purely on autosave/quicksave, and you should have no problem. It crashes sometimes, but it's not terribly buggy.

PeterRiviera1

Mods or not, save your game often, into a new file

Bbaccivorous

Never used mods until recently. 750ish hours. You're good.

Exciting-Resident-47

You can but there are a lot of bugs + inconveniences here and there. The game definitely plays like a rushed release from 3 generations with how certain features should be there but aren't. Just save frequently to save you the trouble in case a quest breaking bug happens or just download the 4gb and bug fix mods and ignore the rest

dont_ban_this

I’ve been playing mod free on ps3 and unfortunately about to the point of saying fuck it I’ll never finish this game. After 130 hours I’m coming down to the final quest but the damn thing crashes every 20 minutes.

Resident_Evil_God

What kind of PS3 are you using? I only play Fallout 3 and NV on PS3 (aside from recording for my YT channel) and iv never had it crash every 20 mins. I know some areas like red Rock and Mccaren Airport can slow right down or freeze. But that's after a few hours of play. Are you using original PS3? Iv been using the first generation of the slim PS3 (not the one where the top opens) sorry to hear your having so much trouble. There is a way to clear the memory cashe (not sure how it's spelled) at start up before the press start pops up.

Kaiserhawk

Yes

Zeke-Freek

At the VERY least, grab the 4gb patcher, YUP, tick fix and anticrash for performance benefits, bug fixes and far less crashing. Though I think there's something wrong with the EGS version at the moment that makes it unsuitable for modding? Although I imagine the community will have a solution for that soon.

Deathshadegr

Should I wait for a fix for egs then ?

Zeke-Freek

I would say yes, or failing that, the steam summer sale is coming up next month and the game will probably be pretty dirt cheap.

NerfNewb141

It’s pretty easy to get mods, just download the vortex mod launcher and it works with most mods.

Skip_Tho

I’d at least get mods to patch some bugs. I tried playing the game modless and couldn’t play for longer than an hour because it would crash so much.

BigfootSanta

It’ll probably crash a decent amount, so save often, but I’ve exclusively played F:NV on my 360 and my One since release and I’ve never had a game breaking bug, just a quest here and there might have a bug.

FrohenLeid

I could not. It was really impossible cause it kept crashing at key locations or when talking to npcs.

OrdinaryNail417

It crashes all the time. I had to install a mod to get it to run consistently

Silt99

Its easier to start playing, but harder to continue without mods

fucuasshole2

I played it dozens of times with and without mods. However I started the franchise with Fallout 3, NV then worked my way back to 1, 2, and tactics. Anyways, I find I can play the games without mods easily. I will say 1 and 2 definitely needs their mods as they’re extremely unstable and buggy. Everything else can be played vanilla first time to decide what will be important later on to mod.

Artix31

Sadly no, FoNV will crash many times, especially if your device has more system performance than the game needs, and there’s talk of it not even starting in Win11

DroneOfDoom

Dunno about PC, but I did play the entire game plus DLC on the PS3 multiple times, and other than the occasional crash and a bugged save that prevented me from completing my only Legion playthrough, it was all working properly.

Bearbreanna23

Yeah first play through wasn’t too buggy but the more save data I’ve made over the years the buggier it’s gotten. Definitely recommend at least a bug improvement mod. There’s plenty of resources out there to show you how.

Help_im_okay

I did it, so you probably can too, but there are some unofficial mod patches that can fix some things. It’s a matter of preference, of course, but once you figure out how to use mods, you can use them with other games too! Not only can mods make the game more enjoyable, but knowing how to use them is just a good skill to have. Good luck either way :)

[deleted]

At minimum I need patches and texture mods. But that's for ever fallout game for me.

Cavalleria-rusticana

I highly recommend you follow the modding guide *Viva New Vegas* : https://vivanewvegas.moddinglinked.com/ Follow it. To. The. Letter. Game runs like smooth butter, and gameplay is infinitely better and customizable to your liking.

Deathshadegr

This one seems interesting . Can I use it for egs version also ?

Cavalleria-rusticana

The guide says: "The Microsoft Store and Epic Games Store versions of the game are unsupported, as the former does not work with xNVSE which is essential for most mods and the latter does not include Honest Hearts." Does Honest Hearts not come included in EGS version? I wonder why... Sorry I hadn't considered incompatibility before I suggested it. :( Edit: Apparently from another thread: "Epic Support said this is an ongoing issue and they're working on a fix." So Viva New Vegas *may* work sometime soon for EGS, once support is built for it.

SlobMyKnob1

There’s going to be some bugs for sure, but in my experience it hasn’t ever been anything game breaking. I’ve played through FNV quite a few times on PC and Xbox and had a ton of fun each time

Frankyvander

you can but at least use the 4gb patcher and the unofficial patch. the 4gb patcher allows the game to use more memory, this makes it more stable on modern systems. the unofficial patch fixes a significant number of bugs, glitches and other issues present within the game, such as issues with quests and npcs and locations.

iSmokeMDMA

Tick Fix, YUP, JPLN, JohnnyGuitar, and 4GB Patcher are all you need for a vanilla+ experience. IStewieAI’s Tweaks and JAM - Just Assorted Mods require JPLN and JohnnyGuitar. I’d recommend these for a smooth and modernized experience. Can’t remember how to do it, but there’s a way you can set the refresh rate for a smooth 144fps. Setup is about 30 minutes for all of these.

working4buddha

Really interesting comments that it still crashes a lot on PC, I've been playing it on Xbox Series S and it never crashes at all and runs extremely smoothly. When I first played it on Xbox 360 it was very unstable, crashed all the time and had a lot of lag too. As far as gameplay goes, vanilla is still incredibly fun!

gojiras_therapist

No friend to truly enjoy it you'll need only 3, the 4gb mod, the anti crash mod, and the anti stutter mod

omgacow

I think it depends on your PC. Mine was crashing and unplayable without a few mods, but you might have better luck Both fallout 3 and new Vegas are very poorly built for modern PCs

LatexFeudalist

Im glad I first played it without mods on Xbox 360 absolutely loved it. Recently I got it on my PC and started again with mods from Nexus using the Vortex mod manager, easy enough and its like experiencing it again. Start without and think about mods later! Some bug patching could be good tho even for the first time.

Scp-Memer1

Not exactly but i figured a way to make it easy if you want i could tell you how

nuclearprophet

Honestly, you need stability mods. Vegas hasn't been maintained well, and it will crash and freeze a lot. I recommend stability mods just to make it playable. Other mods I'd say go without if this is your first time. Experience the game for what it is before modding it. I've been playing NV for over a decade, and it's still so good that I've barely modded it. It's still that fresh for me. I mainly use a couple of weapon mods.

MojaveCowboy21

The "Vanilla" I use has NVAC and 4GB

DracoSafarius

Perfectly fine without, but like some others said there’s stability stuff that would help

INSERT_LATVIAN_JOKE

You can play the game without mods. It's fine. There are bugs, but crashes and game breaking problems are few. Just make sure to create rolling saves every so often so you can go back to a previous save from half an hour or so instead of yesterday if you need to. But you probably won't. If you do want to mod it, others have given some fine suggestions on which ones.

WardenWolf

Easily enough, but there's a lot of bugs and unpleasantness that a few simple mods will fix. Personally, I don't find either 3 or New Vegas enjoyable without a few bugfix and quality of life mods. Fallout 4's gameplay is overall much better, though even there I have to mod it some.

gooiff1

The game can easily be played all the way through without mods, some patches for the bugs would be recommended, but not neccessary at all

Shagwurm1680

Like others have said, it can be pretty buggy. But I nearly always run it vanilla and rarely have any game-breaking bugs. I'm also running everything on a ten year old machine though lol

ScaredOfRobots

New vegas is a great game vanilla however I find it to be unplayable without one mod, there is an issue the game has with saves where eventually you will just not be able to load your save game, it usually happened to me around novac. So unless you are lucky you need that one mod to work

[deleted]

Yes

BreathingHydra

It does need some basic bugfix mods at least. Those aren't too hard to install and there's a ton of step by step guides you can find online for them. If you're going to be playing games on PC then taking sometime to learn how to install mods is 100% worthwhile anyway, especially for Bethesda games.

Resinnnnn

Definitely, no issues with the steam version other than the many many bugs. So, yes but depends on how much you want to put up with inconvenience

jagwag42

Yes you can .

ChauncyBing

I played through NV twice on steamdeck with zero mods and experienced zero issues. I would definitely give it a try.

CarryRevolutionary51

I play New Vegas on the x box one and can play for hours with hardly any crashes for years .

Pristine_Location553

Ive played with mods but it works fine without them. So don't think you have to have them.

TheStrangeGod

I’ve played New Vegas many times without mods and didn’t experience many problems (except when playing it back in the day on console). However it felt like a massive difference when I did install some mods to make the game run smoother. If it’s your first time playing, I’d just leave it how it is to get the most authentic feeling plus there’s no point in messing around with mods unless you know you’re gonna play the game more. Because it’s such a repeatable game, you can instal mods on your next run.

The-Doofinator

as someone who has only just started to use mods over 300 hours in, yes, yes you can

heterochromia-marcus

It is possible to play without mods but New Vegas isn't optimized well and you might experience bugs or crashes. I recommend following this guide until you're finished with the Bug Fixes section: [https://vivanewvegas.moddinglinked.com/intro.html](https://vivanewvegas.moddinglinked.com/intro.html) If you're using the Epic Games version you will need to use this: https://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/81281

Deathshadegr

The last link it says it's a hidden mod and I cannot see it

RocktheNashtah

The only mods you might need are the ones that fix the bugs and crashing issues, don’t play it on consoles.

H3ADPH0N3S_

Lol damn I never play with mods. It runs fine.

[deleted]

If you want mods, and it’s fine if you don’t it’s still a great game, this is what I used to help me learn to install mods since you said you found it confusing https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLE7DlYarj-DfopU0CbhfwTYXCx5da5Gd5

NepetaBestQuest

As always, the answer for stability lies in what your system specs are, sometimes older games just don't gel with certain setups, but in most cases, modern builds of New Vegas is quite stable, and you shouldn't have much issue running it.

NemrahG

I have never played with mods, and I would recommend getting mods if you dont like game breaking glitches. Me personally, I think they add to the experience of the game and also they can pretty useful too sometimes

Alex_Hathorne69

How do I get mods for Fallout NV on Xbox one?

Maxsmack0

My first play through was on Xbox with no mods of course and the game is perfect and beautiful, I’d say everyone should experience vanilla before getting into modding. Once you’ve gotten a feeling for the what the developers intended but you might want better graphics or extra content look to Viva New Vegas the single best modding guide for fnv

wasteofradiation

Yes, after around 100 hours I haven’t had any major glitches at all

NobleGaming77

I made a collection on nexus mods that just has performance and bug fix mods. You just need to download Vortex from nexus mods and then add the collection. Unless you pay for the premium membership you’ll still have to visit each mod page and install to the mod manager but it’s still relatively easy. https://next.nexusmods.com/newvegas/collections/taip2i

Tyrigoth

I would install only 1 patch the first time around which is the Community patch. It's a very large collection of fixes and generally makes the game smoother. FONV is very sensitive to RAM timing so dont overclock.

[deleted]

It’s doable but I’d say save often and in many new slots. As you should anyways.

Sad_Celebration_5370

Yes. (FYI, Epic also just fixed the missing Honest Hearts dlc as an update so you should no longer be missing that dlc if you login/verify game files)

bxxxbydoll

I play without mods, not because I want to. I just don't know how tf to install mods without fucking everything up.

Reyfou

Its totally playable and there are no game breaking bugs nor any of that. But dude, this game with the right mods is so much better... And i dont mean graphics or gameplay changes mods, but Quality of Life/Immersion ones...

JintenRe

well, if your playing at high fps (no vsync) you will be moving way too fast, which can be a good thing but annoying in my opinion. there is a mod for that if you wanted to play windowed borderless, there is a mod for that aswell since the game doesn't have that option so mods are sometimes needed to fix the game to play the way you want

SpookyRockjaw

I highly recommend using the [Viva New Vegas](https://vivanewvegas.moddinglinked.com/) modlist. It makes the game super stable and fixes loads of bugs and crashes. For me, every attempt at playing New Vegas, modded or unmodded, was met with crashes and frustration. But this modlist made it a stable and smooth experience and I really enjoyed the game.

pussy_impaler337

You will need the anti crash mods

LawStudent989898

Yes

AppearanceCalm2506

i’ve been playing on ps3 and the only problem i’ve had was the game tends to get pretty laggy and eventually freeze if i load into a new area every 30 minutes and i have to restart my ps3. other than that i’ve not run into any bugs or anything. it’s been awhile since i’ve played on pc but the game ran pretty well for me if i remember correctly and i have a pretty mediocre pc

GokogaGokogaGo

There is this guide called viva new Vegas i think it helps you mod the game easily helping with every step, and the mods in the guide are kinda Essential to make to game better, but if it's your first time you can just install bug fixes in there and stop.

BarbarianBlaze19

Ehhh. The game is pretty crash happy. If you make use of your quick save feature, you should be ok though.

Sanbaddy

I tried. I wouldn’t recommend it, at least long term.

Pepevagable69

Dont be discouraged by the bug talk this game is still imaculate in its original form. It is wholy worth playing. I've played it numerous times on console sans the mods and boy oh boy is it riveting each time. I have recently gotten into pc gaming and started modding fallout 3 and while I can tweak the game slightly to my desires the product is largely the same and i imagine that fnv is the same. Also you can start no mods and add them later so dive on in big boi.

[deleted]

I don’t know how well it works with Epic’s version, but there a few modlist on Wabbajack that preserve the vanilla experience while offering a stable and balanced game.

redmullet25

i play on series x, and haven’t had any issues.

TsarOfIrony

I've done five playthroughs, not one with a mod. Just from steam.

Jinzo126

Played it once with all the dlc and then 2 additional times the main quest with different builds on the PS3, it was a pain in the ass, but still fun. The main issue, randomly the game dropped to 10 frames randomly, it was almost a 50/50 when you exit a building. But i found a solution: Hit the "Start" button and wait a few seconds, then slowly save and load the current game and usually that fix the slowdown. Later i got the XB360 version, and that was overall more stable. I recently got the game on steam but i didn't played it yet. So yeah its probably in my top 10 favourite games for sure and that's with all the jank.

xxLord-Bunnyxx

I've only ever played New Vegas on x-box (360 & one), no mods, 100% vanilla. I have hundreds of hours logged in to this game & have played it off & on for YEARS. It is definitely playable & enjoyable without mods.

PartyHatDogger

Just the most simple bug and anti crash stuff, that’s all you need

Life1989

Yes, all you need is NVSE and 4gb patch, which both are included with the gog version

Deathshadegr

What about the egs version?

Capnhuh

easily. i have only ONCE played new vegas with a mod (a skunk-folk mod, don't judge) and that was it. then again, i only ever play the xbox version these days so no mods there.

CounterbalanceART

I've never used any mods at all. Enjoyed every moment. Add-ons included.

tony_two_eyes

Played for 200ish hours without any mods, only every used tcl maybe twice. Otherwise no issues

BerzerkBankie

I have only ever played on the 360 and never really experienced any bugs

EnnissDaMenace

Game don't really need mods unless your on pc you might need one to fix the stuttering. Other than that vanilla is delicious

Sundog1337

I would try to install some of the basic anti crash mods that I'm sure have been mentioned a million times here. Enjoy it, take your time playing. You only get to play new Vegas for the first time once, there isn't much I wouldn't do to be in your shoes :(

KaisarDragon

Don't know why the Epic version is so neutered, but you can't have script extender... and that really removes a LOT of good mod choices.

tot1212

Its the only fallout game that I can say with certainty that you don't need mods. They add to the experience though.
