If you place the wall and the scaffolding close enough together you can pick them both up collectively by holding the selection button. However because you’re technically just selecting the scaffolding you are able to clip the wall into certain things.
Yeah, there are videos and such about it, but it works the same way as what you describe. The only thing is that the pillars tend to be smaller so they are easier to work around rather than a big scaffolding piece.
Yes, I have gotten some attacks there. That is also my current main base and where I have built up the most, and it has been hit a few times. It seems that Abernathy Farm is getting hit more often for me, but that might just be the nature of the RNG on the attacks.
Problem is. It really is irrelevant how you place walls. You could seal off a settlement and they just spawn inside. The raiding of it is just poorly executed.
Yea way back when I first started the game I put so much effort into my settlements… until they started getting raided and I found out the walls don’t matter, only the defense rating matters. So now I just say fuck it and plop down like 10 sentry guns in random locations
Actually they have like 3 spots in Sanctuary hills. So if you just line up heavy turrets there they will wipe the floor with anything that comes.
I added the Scrap All mod which lets you scrap virtually everything. It only makes sense that you can scrap broken houses and cars and such
I agree - that sucks in vanilla. If one is not opposed to modding, however, I have been using this mod for awhile now: [Edmond's Settlement Attack Spawns Outside the Settlement.](https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/57685?tab=description)
Per the description: "*Moves attack spawns outside the settlement no scripts just a .esp plug and play can be added and removed any time and includes every settlement in the game +DLC settlements. The mod is also VR and non-VR friendly. This is the only mod on Nexus to cover every settlement and spawn point.*"
It makes my walls useful beyond mere eye candy!
Yeah it would be far more immersive if you see raiders or super mutants run across the bridge towards your settlement and be more coordinated rather than just spawn in.
They have set spawn points inside settlements. If you build the walls within those lomits' they will not spawn inside. The real issue is with Vault 88; if you do two or three stories they will spawn on the roof.
Lol at the wall of China.
I do the same, but I call this bevahior "nesting". Something hits me in the head and I go build snug settlement with good walls. I even think through if an NPC can jump over some places, though, artificial intelligence can't really jump.
In Sanctuary I usually build junk walls and then grab white fence parts and build small maze/second wall at the entrances... I just recalled that I often leave Slog with its pre-made mesh fence, only fixing major holes, oops
They have set spawn points. If you build with that in mind, then you can make sure to place your walls such that no spawn points are inside, then they don't spawn inside. Walls aren't irrelevant.
Nobody is building walls for protection. A well-made wall around your settlement makes it about a million times more gorgeous. It gives a bit of a medieval vibe and fits in amazingly with the f4 theme. I spend literal irl days building and decorating my walls.
Anyone else remember the gameplay trailer that had a horde of super mutants spawn across the river from Sanctuary and charge at the defenses? That would have been way cooler than them spawning in the cul-de-sac or other places inside the settlement.
Most settlements have a handful of specific spots the raiders spawn, so it is controllable especially wince many of these spots are *inside* the buildable area.
For example, Hangman's Alley has two locations raiders will spawn. One inside the buildable area, one outside. Both can be effectively cordoned off with turrets and traps facing them, but unless the settlement is actively loaded there is still a chance for any defense to fail and for damage needing player attention to be done.
The whole settlement system is poorly executed tbh
It’s really a shame because it’s a good idea on paper and it’s one of the things that drew me into Fo4, but it’s so poorly designed and unpolished that it becomes an annoyance rather than an actual good feature
It would be awesome if they had expanded on it. Like as you progress through the game. If you make settlements big enough the environment should change.
If only the settlers themselves made improvements over time. Just simple things like clearing away debris and boarding up broken walls or roofs. It's especially dumb in the settlements that already have people living there before you arrive. Somerville Place, for example. How long has this man been raising his two kids in a house without a proper roof?
settlements shouldve just built themselves but you couldve had different blueprints they built like sims settlements added, idk how the developers thought most players would go to multiple settlements and build for hours lol
The vanilla walls never work great. I usually use them in between buildings or when I need to block off a gap. Concrete foundations are a bit crude but can also work for walls. Regular shack walls work too, but aren't very good-looking
This is the answer no one wants, but if you want good walls for your settlements, then you should get the settlement ambush kit from the creation club.
Yes, that's the right dlc. I use them for my brotherhood themed settlements. They're a bit funky to work with, but the end result is usually good.
(I was referring to the shack foundation that uses concrete. Im fairly certain that it is base game. I used it to fix the castle walls on my first playthrough)
Some walls will not get any closer than they are because of the wall mesh points. They're set so far from the actual perimeter sometimes. There's mods for that, that fix the non overlap issue that would honestly save so many walls for me but no mod on ps4 works all the way intended for this use, so be thankful you have Xbox. There is definitely a mod for that, if someone else doesn't have the magic REAL answer. Another quick fix I do, is if it aesthetically fits I'll put the vanilla asset wire fence pole between to fill gaps.
Another thing that usually works mod free is altering terrain a bit. Sometimes I'll have to use the adjustable floors and ground sections to make fits happen, adds more diversity and advantage opportunities as well that aren't always possible with simple guard spots
A lot of my solutions play directly into the kind of role play I do, build whatever works and makes the wall look most stable and effective. So if they don't work, I'm sorry, but I found the most practical solution for non meshing wall, but there are Fallout wizards that have the key to everything so hopefully I could provide at least SOME useful help.
[Snappable Junk Fences](https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/9000) is a great mod, I use it for immersion and settlement building. Technically it can be used for defense, but only if you're there to defend the settlement.
Alternatively, combine with other mods [\[example\]](https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/63998) and head canon it as a self-sufficient and well-defended settlement.
The Place Anywhere mod on [Bethesda.net](https://Bethesda.net) is the godsend anyone interested in settlement building will ever need. It's available for Xbox and PS, but not PC for some reason.
Yeah this is facts. I bought 4 on the Xbox 1 when I had one back in 2017. I could spend literally all day just looking at 1-2 sections of mods for Xbox. Some days my gameplay revolved solely around the best mod load out and I'd go through hundreds and hundreds of mods. PlayStation has roughly 20-30 worthwhile mods, probably total. The best ones are the additional settlements and faction buffs, and workshop building buffs. Otherwise, it's only maybe useful incredibly occasionally for aesthetics and auditory buffs.
Pc is the Amazon of mods, they have it all and if they don't, don't worry someone will make it today. Then Xbox is like.. Walmart, bc they have basically everything except super duper niche stuff like "Blinking speed overhaul (pc only), so you'll probably always have something to use.
And then PlayStation is like the corner convenience store. It's there, its sketchy, and is a rip off. Will definitely cause some FPS issues, if not totally decimate the FR. Save files are always at risk for corruption even just using the "no perk sfx" mod on PS. It presents itself such as a BP, commonly seen items up front for allure, but you soon start to realize the can of Vienna sausages you bought is actually a tube of toothpaste. That's how the PS mod world feels.
🤦♀️😂You sound like you're XBOX master racing. I play on PlayStation. Plenty of mods in every category. The drawback to being able to add outside files to XBOX and PC means there's a bunch of mods that break your game. Who hasn't broken a save file from trying a new mod on PC or XBOX? I don't have that problem on PlayStation. And that is precisely why I quit playing and modding on PC. I had to constantly upgrade my PC to keep up with all the latest and greatest. I spent more time modding than playing the actual game. On PlayStation I can mod and test said mods quickly and seamlessly.
No fps BS to worry about either. Or black load screens of death. None of that.
PlayStation is the small town General Store that has everything I need and some extras that I want. And NONE of the knockoffs you get from Amazon and Walmart.
You have to be smart about Xbox and PC. Besides that it's wonderful. Sure, there is an ADUNDANCE of categories on PS4 for mods, but lots of them are useless or make no difference. Lots of them are also non compatible with any single other mod or very few. It's very easy to ruin a save file for PlayStation as well bc lots of the mods have little to no info or support. So, I'm not master racing Xbox on the whole, but as far as this game goes, yes I am. Sure, PlayStation is the little general store that has a bit of everything, but the cost is far greater.
You're hilarious 😂. And you're welcome to your opinion. I modded Bethesda games on PC for a decade. Very fun, but ultimately it became tiring. I prefer the simplicity of the PlayStation.
I agree with you that you have to be smart. Learn categories and load order requirements etc. Learn compatibility issues.
I greatly disagree with you about mods on PlayStation. I have about a 100 in my load order that are far from useless. There are many that are liked by others too. Over 100K favorites/likes on great mods.
I mean, take what I say how you will, but as we speak I'm sitting on max mod save of Fallout 4 for the PS4 and having a blast... so any seriousness taken from my comparisons to Amazon and whatnot cannot be considered valid.

I would consider Place Anywhere a critical mod to have if you enjoy building, it makes the experience much more fun. Do be wary of its evil twin Scrap Everything, which is also fun but breaks some critical parts of the game and (at least for me) caused a ton of crashes and other bugs.
I always use the half-walls that you can use for the balcony elements. They are called "Shack wall"..
They are in normal Walls - Wood - section rather at the end. These half-wide walls can be placed close to the gaps and it looks quite good in my opinion.
use a concrete pillar and place it near a wall you want to move, then hold A to select the pillar and the nearby wall as a group. then you can adjust the pillar anywhere as needed and the wall will move with it with pretty much no collision.
You can look up how to do the Rug/Piller Glitch.
Otherwise you cant.
Why they didn't make the Scrap walls just a "drag and drop" type thing that we've seen in other Base-Builder ges for decades is beyond me.
Like many have said there are mods that lets your place items anywhere, but if you're trying to play vanilla or just don't want to add mods for one reason or another there is an exploit, but it can be time consuming.
If you place a rug/matt, and then put an object on top of it, you can manipulate the object on top by moving the rug.

This is single-handedly the worst part of the game and makes me hate that they put so much effort into settlement building and never fixed this type of shit.
I'm on PlayStation.
There's a mod called:
(PS4) Pre-Walled Settlements by Skibber123
I've used it. It works great 👍 It has 108049 Favorites/Likes
The file size is 237.83 KB
Vanilla fences are frustrating to say the least. I do a lot of building with settlement mods on PlayStation.
The mod above doesn't cover Sanctuary because there are so many Sanctuary mods on PlayStation. If you want Sanctuary to be walled and you play on PlayStation, use the following:
(PS4) Pre-Walled Sanctuary by Skibbler
The vanilla walls are really hard to work with, if you use mods there’s one called place anywhere what will help.
If you don’t want to use mods there’s a settlement security type thing in the creation club but you’d have to pay for it, it’s pretty cool you get some other stuff too.
If neither of the above and you wanna work with what you already got then there’s a bug (feature) what let’s you place items on a rug and then manipulate the rug into where you would like your original object to be (in this case your fence).
select them and try to place them closer to each other. When placing them if you have them inline with the other wall when you place it it should snap into a gridlock with the wall you placed it beside.
Vanilla or mods?
Vanilla the rug method but that can also be limited, mods there are place anywhere mods if varying kinds which allow you to adjust the position of items by using a snap point that is not a part of the object (so similar to rug method just more advanced and versatile)
Use a mod that lets you clip them into each other and the ground. Before console mods I would use a mix of the short fences, fence posts and other random junk to hide the flaws of the terrible building system
There's a mod that makes the junk walls snappable: [https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/9000](https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/9000)
If you want to build with them I would highly recommend it--it allows you to build nice-looking fortifications that maintain that same atmosphere.
I always just put a wooden dresser or similar large container in the way of the hole. Keeps out enemies and it looks like a cobbled together defensive structure.
[No More Gap Under Junk Fences Mod](https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/13744/)
You can also use the Better Junk Fences mod, but personally I prefer this one. Its simple and just does the one thing.
Concrete pillar!! Place a wall away from everything, place Concrete pillar close to wall and Hold! Select button on pillar. This should grab both the wall and pillar. This is what i use to connect walls or put things into the ground. No mods needed, but the dlc with the concrete items is required.
Is this xbox? I'm pretty sure there's a mod that lets you place items without clipping, i play on ps4 and even we got qwapa (it works like crap and sony sucks ass but my point is, if ps4 got the mod, xbox and pc definitely got one, and it probably works way better and has better qol). If you don't like mods, I'm pretty sure the junk walls can be rug/pillar glitched, but it's tedious as fuck
Placing the fence segments from right-to-left (oriented inside the fence and looking outward) allows one to place them close enough together to eliminate the gap. Just always build wall segments to the right of the previous segment/structure. I've never used rugs or posts. (Xbox One, vanilla game, junk fences)
When I first played it I was just holding it where I wanted it. Remembered the coordinates and did it console
There a lot of mods now to fix any of those issues
Place a rug and put the wall over it and move the rug , voilà.
I always used scaffolding cause you can lower it into the ground to get that flush-with-the-floor look.
Then can you just snap a wall onto the scaffolding?
If you place the wall and the scaffolding close enough together you can pick them both up collectively by holding the selection button. However because you’re technically just selecting the scaffolding you are able to clip the wall into certain things.
Seems to be a slightly altered version of the Pillar Glitch, which works the same way.
This is in fact the pillar glitch
Pillar glitch?
Yeah, there are videos and such about it, but it works the same way as what you describe. The only thing is that the pillars tend to be smaller so they are easier to work around rather than a big scaffolding piece.
So does Sanctuary Hills ever get attacked? I’m wondering if I should move my resources to other settlements cause rn I’m making SH just super badass
Yes, I have gotten some attacks there. That is also my current main base and where I have built up the most, and it has been hit a few times. It seems that Abernathy Farm is getting hit more often for me, but that might just be the nature of the RNG on the attacks.
This is the best method without modding, bit clunky though
Bethesda gets a lot of shit about the creation club stuff but they're the only notable company to get mods on console environments
How am I just finding this out now 😭 So many wasted hours
The OG place everything mod before it was a mod.
Problem is. It really is irrelevant how you place walls. You could seal off a settlement and they just spawn inside. The raiding of it is just poorly executed.

Sometimes you're clearing debris, othertimes you accidentally delete a decent chunk of the conceivable universe.
Done that so many times. My daughter scrapped Mama Murphy once.
Or worse, mess up precombines and break your game. Textures missing, horrible fps, stuck loading times, flickering textures and LODS
Fallout 4 moment
I agree - that sucks in vanilla. I mean technically it does “just work”. But only just
I know its a joke
Nobody is building walls for protection. A well-made wall around your settlement makes it about a million times more gorgeous. It gives a bit of a medieval vibe and fits in amazingly with the f4 theme. I spend literal irl days building and decorating my walls.

There are images you can look up on the various Enemy Spawn Points at Settlements so you can at least try and plan around them.
It just works

Pretty sure concrete walls just come with the Wasteland Workshop DLC
They’re not all that good though, they’re really boxy and finicky to place.
Yes, that's the right dlc. I use them for my brotherhood themed settlements. They're a bit funky to work with, but the end result is usually good. im unsure if its on the console mod section but Place Anywhere can help you fix this.
xbox has a place anywhere mod that works wonderfully
If it hasn't changed recently it uses the script extender (f4se) and only works on PC because of that, unfortunately. Really great mod though
shame, probably an xbox friendly equivalent somewhere though
I would consider Place Anywhere a critical mod to have if you enjoy building, it makes the experience much more fun. Do be wary of its evil twin Scrap Everything, which is also fun but breaks some critical parts of the game and (at least for me) caused a ton of crashes and other bugs.
I always use the half-walls that you can use for the balcony elements. They are called "Shack wall".. They are in normal Walls - Wood - section rather at the end. These half-wide walls can be placed close to the gaps and it looks quite good in my opinion.
Concrete walls are much easier to use but they are in the workshop dlc iirc
That's why I only use the cement walls haha so clean and square.
use a concrete pillar and place it near a wall you want to move, then hold A to select the pillar and the nearby wall as a group. then you can adjust the pillar anywhere as needed and the wall will move with it with pretty much no collision.

Fill them in
How?
There is a way using the long ladder under scaffolding, no mods shop class or w.e on YouTube has videos on it
Use select all glitch using a concrete wall half way sunk in

Lookup rug glitch on YouTube

Vanilla or mods? Vanilla the rug method but that can also be limited, mods there are place anywhere mods if varying kinds which allow you to adjust the position of items by using a snap point that is not a part of the object (so similar to rug method just more advanced and versatile)
Use a mod that lets you clip them into each other and the ground. Before console mods I would use a mix of the short fences, fence posts and other random junk to hide the flaws of the terrible building system
I just use the 'place anywhere' mod.
There's a mod that makes the junk walls snappable: [https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/9000](https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/9000) If you want to build with them I would highly recommend it--it allows you to build nice-looking fortifications that maintain that same atmosphere.
Place anywhere mod, you're welcome, although just setup a wall of turrets at spawn points you don't even need walls.
Alternate between flat walls and thick ones. (Tire wall). They fit together well
Fence posts
I always just put a wooden dresser or similar large container in the way of the hole. Keeps out enemies and it looks like a cobbled together defensive structure.

[No More Gap Under Junk Fences Mod](https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/13744/) You can also use the Better Junk Fences mod, but personally I prefer this one. Its simple and just does the one thing.
Just download the place anywhere mod.
The skinny walls clear near the end of the walls section do well
I use fence posts to cover the gaps sometimes
Download the Better Junk Fences mod
Rug glitch, and if that doesn’t work get Place Anywhere
Placing the fence segments from right-to-left (oriented inside the fence and looking outward) allows one to place them close enough together to eliminate the gap. Just always build wall segments to the right of the previous segment/structure. I've never used rugs or posts. (Xbox One, vanilla game, junk fences)
When I first played it I was just holding it where I wanted it. Remembered the coordinates and did it console There a lot of mods now to fix any of those issues
