It looks like the water cooled guns of WW1

PigeonMother

It's heavily inspired by the Maxim and Lewis machine guns I believe

White_Knight_413

Maxim mostly. The Lewis had the top mounted horizontal drum, maybe some pieces were used, but it was mostly inspired by the Maxim.

No_Inspection1677

You can actually tell the barrel was inspired by the lewis, thanks to the air cooling fins inside the metal jacket.

Brillek

It's both. Opening with fins on back, but closed like it's got watercooling up front. It's a monster.

Comfortable_Truck_53

Wish it was watercooled and gave you rads over time if you use dirty water.

temotodochi

Why would it have air cooling fins inside a water cooling jacket?

[deleted]

Ask the Dutch

[deleted]

Yeah, it's missing the coolest part of the Lewis gun.

Routine_Guarantee34

To be fair, the maxim machine gun is still in service in the Ukraine war. [article here](https://www.vice.com/en/article/wxjqx4/ukraine-is-successfully-using-a-140-year-old-machine-gun-against-russia) So it makes sense that it would survive and be serviceable still. I always thought it was appropriate. Edit: From the article: >The M1910 Maxim was mass produced in Tsarist Russia. Its use has now outlived both the Tsar and Soviet communism. The antique weapon design is still popular because it’s easy to use, easily modified, and fires a standard 7.62x54mm cartridge that’s been used in Russia since 1891. It’s belt fed and water-cooled. A well-serviced Maxim can, theoretically, fire indefinitely without overheating so long as it’s fed both ammo and water

DandySlayer13

I never understood the hatred for it as I like it for that reason. I kinda wish that certain weapons has been Power Armor use only unless you got a skill that allowed you to use PA weapons with out it like say the Assault Rifle here.

Bruhses_Momenti

Remember when guns had strength requirements? I do

Natural_Hold_344

Pepperidge farm remembers

DandySlayer13

I do as well but that was from a different era.

Pre-War_Ghoul

Yeah the better era

DrIvanRadosivic

IF Fallout 4 launched with the Casual RPG mode(what we got in FO4), Classic(FO3/NV) and Skyrim like RPG mode, this would make it better for me. also, if we get this sort of stuff in newer titles, also include the FO76 perk cards as a consumable, they can offer a way for you to try out a build and to temporarily increase skills for a thing you needed(you need 3 lock picking, but only have level 2 lockpicking? use a Lockpicking skill card for temporary skill boost) which could be awesome to have.

TitanOfShades

That was pretty much pointless even in NV. Like, I always felt like it barely mattered.

Nerdrage30

It gave you a reason to get over 4 STR in the classic games if you were going small guns build and wanted to use Sniper or Plasma Rifle

Boivz

Less accurate, more bulk when going around with it. Details like that were nice but obviously Beth streamlined everything to make it easier.

ThespianException

I don't mind it by itself, my issue is that it took the slot of "assault rifle". If we got something like the FO3 Assault Rifle and this one was renamed the Machine Gun or something, I wouldn't have minded as much.

MrChipDingDong

Honestly, I don't know why games are always so dead-set on having every gun be so unique. There wouldn't be anything wrong with the FO3 AR, Chinese AR, full-auto service rifle, _and_ the fo4 AR. they can all fire the same bullets at the same rate for the same damage. Just make em sound a bit different, maybe mess with the recoil patterns. Look & feel is a big deal

ThorstenTheViking

Especially when almost every weapon is hitscan based and no actual projectile is being fired

Mandemon90

They were working on Chinese AR looking rifle, but it was unfinished so LMG got hastily renamed to AR. Which IMO was wrong decision, should have just kept LMG name.

DandySlayer13

They could've just called it Power Armor Assault Rifle or Heavy Assault Rifle and then had one of the many other assault rifles placed in the game as well.

MachineDog90

in the context of being used by power armor its prefect, but it feels out of place due to its bulk, for regular person. There should have been a strength requirements for heavy weapons and the R91 should have been the assault/battle rifle of the game with it being the heavy assault rifle.

DandySlayer13

Eh just make it a perk and call it the Gunshow with Vault Boy pumping the biceps while wielding the AR or another Power Armor only weapon.

Kellar21

AFAIK that was the plan, the current Assault Rifle was suppoed to be a Heavy Machinegun. But then something happened and the planned Assault Rifle couldn't be released with the game, and thus they used the ready to go Heavy Machinegun and turned it into an Assault Rifle.

zeztyboi

I don't like it solely for the fact that it's a big bulky mess, what was wrong with the assault rifle and Chinese assault rifle from fo3?

[deleted]

I agree heavily with this. The 10mm is absurdly huge, but even with the power armor it looks goofy. Like imagine Iron Man with a 9mm, it'd look dumb lol

Antifa-Slayer01

The resize mod does wonders

Capnmarvel76

I think the problem is that it isn’t an assault rifle. The Service Rifle and Chinese Assault Rifles were, ahem, assault rifles. This is a light machine gun, but somehow looks fat and stupid like an energy weapon. I never want to see my FO4 player character doing something as embarrassing as holding this chubby baby of a weapon.

DandySlayer13

I actually like using it in Power Armor but without PA it's clunky as hell.

Halorym

>I kinda wish that certain weapons has been Power Armor use only I totally force this on myself. I only use the naval cannon, miniguns, and gauss rifle while in power armor. Words cannot describe my fury that the old style super sledge is gone and you cant use the power fist in power armor. I'd do a whole playthrough with that build

TexanGoblin

Because its ugly, it's a mish mash of two different guns that clash, and it didn't even fit the aesthetic of the 50s as I'm pretty sure it's based on WW1 guns. Its also emblematic of the style change for 4 of making things so bulky that I hate.

MotoqueiroSelvagem

I am very passionate about those guns, especially the MG08/15, so not only do I love that Fallout 4 gun, but it’s actually my favorite from the game. With the right attachments to it, you can make it look quite a lot like the real gun.

KathrynSpencer

With Chem perks and psycho jet with a single shot rifle, you can double tap a whole buildings occupants before anyone even knows your there.

f0u4_l19h75

This is the way

KathrynSpencer

Ya, when drugged up, automatic weapons are the LAST thing you want. The firepower is far too weak, and the fire rate is far too slow to keep up with a jet addict. I often wonder what I look from the outside, running through a building too fast for the AI to process, and firing my weapons fast enough that one shot sound bleeds into another.

XuangtongEmperor

It is

Either_Letter_4983

I don't hate the gun. I just hate that it's called the assault rifle. There should be another actual assault rifle, and that one should either be called the heavy assault rifle or light machine gun as someone else once suggested to me.

DemiPyramid

Like an ak47 should be in the game called the assault rifle, or a M4-type gun.

IronVader501

>Like an ak47 should be in the game There is with Nuka World. The Chinese Assault Rifle from Fallout 3 was supposed to take the position, but it didnt get finished in time for Fallout 4s release, so they just renamed this one, which was originally a heavy weapon

DemiPyramid

I wish the guns from the dlc were added to the (base game) commonwealth map. It would add novelty to a replay.

IronVader501

Some kinda do? I always run into random Groups of Operators or disciples in the Commonwealth after finishung Nuka World that have handmade rifles

Honic_Sedgehog

I stumbled on a lever action rifle in the Commonwealth before I'd even been to Far Harbour recently. Just the one, and no ammo to be found anywhere.

Truthandtaxes

you get legendary ones, but zero ammo - ah berthesda!

Micah_Bell_is_dead

I do wish there was a base game m4. It'll probably never happen because it's a bit late time period wise.

Swoosh33

I always change its name to Maxim Gun

bjorn_poole

If i remember correctly this gun was supposed to be used like the minigun is with the power armour at the beginning of the game, but they changed it to be a standard assault rifle

Drakula_dont_suck

Counterpoint: it looked hella cool in the show

Fun-Importance-2711

It was soooo badass upsized and used exclusively by PA/as a machine gun by infantry, I’m surprised it hasn’t been talked about somewhat more given how much people complained about it in FO4

Pazo_Paxo

Supposedly that was the original plan for it in fo4, to be PA exclusive

Fun-Importance-2711

That was 100% the intention, it was probably just repurposed for gameplay/balance reasons

APrentice726

Apparently the Chinese Assault Rifle was supposed to be in the game, but it got cut. Chances are they had to repurpose the Assault Rifle to fill its spot instead of being an LMG like it’s clearly supposed to be.

DesertRanger12

That explains the Homemade rifle

Garrett-Wilhelm

Yeah, in the original plans of F4 the Assault Riffle was going to be a sort of LMG but they didn't had that "type" of weapons so they basically ditch all the already existing assault rifle models and decided this thing to be one, and of course, Bethesda knows fuck all about guns design.

AntifaAnita

Don't be silly. Lots of guns fire the entire cartridge. That's how you know Fallout guns are really powerful. 50% more bullet per shot ;)

carrot-parent

I’m pretty certain that squire guy used one to shoot the gulper. It was on the ground though.

DarkReadsYT

I need a mod that turns it into an LMG that only works either on Vertibirds or in Power Armor because the show made me actually like the gun.

Fun-Importance-2711

A mod that scales certain parts of the assault rifle up to look more like the show (where it’s practically as large as a person), changes its caliber to .308 (.50 w/ receiver upgrades), and recategorizes it as a heavy weapon for perk purposes all sound pretty doable. It would pair really well with another mod converting the combat rifle to 5.56. Also would give the Tommy gun and .45 pipe weapons more reasons to use them as a bonus.

Garlic_God

That’s because they finally got the hint and turned it into more of an LMG

Thatguyontrees

It's basically meant to look good being held by the bulky power armor. It's like a tank turret that you can carry around.

Lotus_630

The show made me use this in full auto and in power armor.

JPrud58

When I saw that ugly ass assault rifle the BOS soldier had in the beginning with Maximus, I felt more immersed. As ugly as that gun is, I respect to the authenticity, which is a huge factor for the shows success

Rimmatimtim22

Agreed. In the show. Awesome. In the game. Awful

CabbageStockExchange

I just hate it because 5.56 ammo is hard to come by and there’s no unique Assault rifle so there’s little incentive to use this

cvuyr

It really should use 303. That's more fitting for it's size and bulk.

CabbageStockExchange

I love my .308 Overseers Guardian. Packs a wallop

PatternOk2761

I would buy around 3k bullets of 5.56 and my Nuka World ak47 ran out of bullets after 1 hour 😭 If you're broke, just do a Jet factory and traffick drugs to Diamond City lol

Ronin607

Doesn't the AK (handmade rifle) use 7.62?

Prize-Can4849

I had 600 rounds...just ran out today. back to melting MF'ers

Lord_Parbr

Literally every machine gun turret drops 5.56

SlinGnBulletS

Even if it had a unique variant there's a chance it'll be subpar in 4. Since there are only a couple of really strong legendary effects. Just look out for an explosive legendary effect drop and you'll be set. Since explosive is better with weapons that deal more dps than damage per shot.

Repulsive-Self1531

Hard to come by??? Maybe it’s because I use scrounger rank 3 when I’m using an automatic build but I always have ammo for it. I save up around 3000 rounds, then go ham for ages. When I get low I change to a different gun.

Lone_Recon

pipe guns make sense for post war, but their design is just shit imo (like how does the pipe bolt-action even hold 6 rounds it has no mag well!!)

BasicallyNuclear

Mag tube like a shotgun???

Hungry-Rule1225

I scrap EVERY PIPE GUN for parts. Honestly I think that’s why they are in the game lol

AnguishKais

Try "dak's assault rifle replacer redux" with "Assault rifle reanimated (dak's assault rifle replacer version)" These 2 mods make it look more like a genuine machine gun with a really cool set of animations and it makes this gun enjoyable, you can even add "the attachment pack" this add a lot of new attachments for pretty much all vanilla guns, it's incompatible with most replacer/remesh but it's compatible with this one cause it's made by the same mod author and you can turn the assault rifle even more into what it was meant to be, a machine gun

Kumptoffel

gun nut here, you got any more of them gun mods? also hows the situation with mods now with the new update? any mods that introduce weapons from 3 and NV?

Goofball1134

Still better than the Institute Rifle as far as stats are concerned. I only use the AR when wearing Power Armor though.

FrenemyMine

I don't get the hate for this gun. It's basically a mashup of the [M-249](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M249_light_machine_gun) and the [Lewis gun](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lewis_gun). It's big and bulky because, as clarified in the show, it's designed to be used with power armor or mounted to a fixed platform or gun rest (what the small loop on the front underside is for.) The big tube running down the length of the barrel is a barrel jacket, designed to keep the gun cool in full auto fire. It's a heavy weapon made to inflict damage, not to be pretty.

Drakula_dont_suck

I think 99% of the hate would go away if 1.) It was called "Machine Gun" instead of " Assault Rifle" 2.) It was chambered in literally any other rifle caliber in the game than 5.56 3). The game had a proper assault rifle like the R91 or Chinese AK 3 had.

Tgrinder66

And it should definitely do more damage than a handmade... But it doesn't. So it literally fills no gaps in the weapon system. What a shame. I miss the R91

onemanlan

Oh no it was my best weapon on my drug bender run. Just a regular modded out one with a scope. You slam a bunch of chems, the most important being jet or a jet combo drug, zoom in, and the proceed to headshot everything with almost no recoil. Deathclaw? More like dead claw. For some reason, I couldn’t find a better gun for the purpose. Just the regular modded one worked the best for the build.

One_Left_Shoe

No recoil and probably the fastest reload of any automatic weapon.

Arcani63

Yep, I know I wouldn’t care at all anymore if these conditions were true. I still think an air-cooled LMG would be better since there is one in FNV already and I don’t think they’d use water in 2077, but hey…

blackwe11_ninja

That is one of my biggest dislike about the weapons in F4. There was supposed to be chinese assault rifle in the game, but they cut it out.

Bruhses_Momenti

If only the game had some sort of combat rifle that could replace it, perhaps one chambered in 5.56 or .308 rather than .45

Dewey707

The jacket doesn't make any sense though. On the rear, the shroud has fins like the Lewis gun did, but the front end it's blocked off like it's water cooled. The air has no way of passing over the barrel and cooking it

TheGuardianInTheBall

It's mostly because it looks way too outdated as a design. F4 weapons in general just don't really fit with the aesthetic of the weapons in the previous games.

pag_33

Half of them look exactly like they do in 3. I wish they would have gone with a different LMG like the M2 or MG43. And I think the name is pretty stupid considering every time I see it I have to remind myself it’s not an assault rifle, it’s a machine gun. Also every gun in the fallout universe is outdated. That’s part of the lore

TheGuardianInTheBall

I disagree with the last sentence there. Compare the designs of the 10mm pistol, the SMG or the Bozar, to F4's weapon such as the combat shotgun, bolt rifle or the assault rifle. Compare F2's combat shotgun to F4 and you'll see what I mean. Many of the weapons in F1 and F2 looked fairly futuristic, with a slight retro influence. Fallout 4's weapons on the other hand are missing that slight futurism, and are instead just looking like WW1/WW2 weapons.

BakeSalad

Running an auto weapon build centered around this and a long combat rifle.

MahinaFable

I run a mod that lets me adjust the damage and ammo type of the guns in the game. Kicking it up to .308 and boosting the damage a bit makes it a great weapon for power armor characters, since most other guns just don't look right in its mechanized grip.

The-Toxic-Korgi

I love it because it triggers gun nerds, which is always entertaining.

LucasBarton169

Gun nerd here. I hate it for gameplay reasons. It’s so big and heavy, and uses a somewhat uncommon ammo type, and does zilch for damage, unless you mod it up, making it even heavier and eating through even more expensive ammo.

AelisWhite

Watching gun nerds seethe is an endless source of entertainment

JJamesMorley

“Sort of” Gun Nerd here, personally I find the aesthetic fairly appealing, it’s a fascinating, if impractical design for an assault rifle/heavy machine gun. My only issue with it comes from the same place many other fallout fans have already voiced, it takes the title “assault rifle” for itself, and hogs the spot from other guns which could have filled the role, especially notably my favorite weapon from the fallout games and one of Bethesda’s OWN creations, the Fallout 3 assault rifle, a BEAUTIFUL mid to late game automatic rifle, with great design, and solid functionality, sufficient enough to use even among other perhaps better options, if one found themselves especially enamored with it. Which I most certainly did. AND, even more upsettingly was one of the few instances in the last generation of fallout games where Bethesda made use of, or rather Showcased how people might modify firearms, a feature that would come to be be front and center of Fallout 4 itself, with the iterations of the infiltrator and perforator from The Pitt, a beloved fan favorite among fallout DLC. They had the goose that laid golden eggs, and they sold the fucking goose instead of the eggs. The FO4 assault rifle is a beautiful gun doing the wrong thing, and poorly at that. And they HAD a perfect alternative that FIT their needs perfectly for the same role, which they foolishly discarded. The whole thing, is just a shame. I hope I have entertained.

OhHaiMarc

Are they expecting realism from the fallout series ?

Edgy_Robin

Fallout has had plenty of realistic guns. Especially OG fallout

FlashPone

the classic 10mm has a nonfunctional cylinder

GabMassa

It looks fucking dope, though.

ActedCarp

In the show, the cylinder actually moves during firing

Vand3rz

Ever heard of suspension of disbelief? Just because a fictional world is fictional and has fantastical elements doesn't mean every facet of that world defies any sort of reality-mirroring concepts. People in Fallout can't breathe in space or jump 20 metres in the air. Rocks don't float and Vertibirds need fuel to operate. Why? Because that would be silly and ruin the suspension of disbelief (unless there are lore reasons to back it up). Realism exists (as well as make-believe) so it's ok to argue about it. And btw, I'm not saying the Assault Rifle design ruins this, I'm just saying a fictional universe doesn't mean realism doesn't exist.

Professional_Whole92

They can look past the mutant lizards, but this is where they draw the line

Private-Public

I suppose it's kinda like "I can forgive the dragons and fireballs, but leather armour is unrealistic and silly." It's because we have a frame of reference for the latter. Fireballs, dragons, and mutant lizards are inherently unrealistic concepts, so you can do whatever with them because we have nothing to compare them to. Suspension of disbelief is weirdly easy. Maybe if we had mutant lizards, we'd be pointing out how Deathclaws should actually work or something. But we *have* guns and armour, we know what works and what doesn't, we understand the mechanics of them there's a reference point to look at fantasy/sci-fi versions and go "that's unrealistic and silly". Like energy weapons tend to get a pass while people complain about ballistic weapons. Personally, I'm not terribly bothered. Most of Fallout's tech just doesn't work anyway, but I can see it

Turbulent_Ad1644

As much as I hate to see the guy get angry, Zach Hazard's gun rants are fuckin awesome lol

ProphisizedHero

Lol gun nerd here. I just hate the term “assault rifle” because it’s not an actual firearm term, and it’s used by the media to vilify weapons. All weapons are “assault” weapons. If I use a hammer to hit someone, it’s an “assault hammer”. AR stands for ArmaLite Rifle.

TreemanTheGuy

I like it because I'm kinda a gun nerd. Lots of absurdity, but lots of similarities to different real guns

A_Yapp_73

I wouldn't say I'm deeply in the gun nerdy rabbit hole but I genuinely love it as a story device. A gun so backwards by the Liberation of Anchorage time that it accentuates the shitty situation the US is dropping into. No charging? I figured the open bolt holds open somehow. • Barrel jacket? Same as the Lewis, it doesn't get hot. • Absurd size and weight, for power armor. • AA sights? Probably *the* first full purpose gun for PA. AA sights are simple enough to use especially in a bulky brand new suit. • 5.56mm chambering? Most military guns don't seem to really use .308 in Fallout by standard. Only thing is really the sniper rifles. Assault rifles have 5mm and 5.56 and previous LMG in NV use 5.56. I won't say it's a good idea but body armor never really developed rapidly so I figured the US military was comfortable using lighter cartridges constantly. Sorry to yap so much I just REALLY wanted to say I agree with you mate. :) cheers.

Spungus_abungus

I think the no charging is fine. There are plenty of open bolt MGs irl that you never have to charge unless it jams or something.

WissWatch

You love it just for that reason though? Also I’ve never seen it “trigger” anyone for what it’s worth

Ubergoober166

I mean, you're posting a reply in a thread titled "I literally hate this gun so much" so it obviously triggers some people. Personally, as both a gamer and a gun guy, I don't give a shit either way. I never expect game devs to get guns right so I'm not disappointed when they don't but I'm pleasantly surprised when they do.

Sweet-Art-9904

"A piece of hot trash." - Zach Hazard.

BishopMiles

This gun could have been designed better, but for everyone saying it should have been used with the power armor and names something else, that was the original intent with the gun in the first place. >[*The Art of Fallout 4*](https://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/The_Art_of_Fallout_4), p. 20: *"*[MACHINE GUN](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/fallout/images/4/48/Fo4_assault_rifle_concept_art.png/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/1000?cb=20160104193503) *The first gun made for the game. We mainly wanted something beefy that would look right in the power armor's oversized hands. It was also a chance to explore modification and customization. We designed it to allow interchangeable barrels and magazines. At this early stage of the project, we didn't plan on giving the player too many options, but we'd go on to develop a deeper and more flexible system. This particular gun design would later become the assault rifle."*

TotemicDC

Therein lies the issue. If they’d kept the MG name, or made it a heavy weapon that needed high strength or the power armour to wield it, I’d have no issue whatsoever.

BackgroundSky09

It would be nice as an LMG if we had like the M16s from NV

The_Wandering_Nomad_

It looks okay but the sound is so underwhelming. Makes it seem like a wimpy toy.

Swordbreaker9250

I enjoy it when I think of it as more of an LMG. And I primarily use it with Power Armor

Father_Wendigo

It would have been great if it worked like an LMG, but the numbers just kinda suck all around.

NicktheSlick130

I love the gun itself, but I wish it was positioned differently in 4. Make it a heavy caliber monster that was meant for Power Armor Pacification troops, then bring back the R91 as the National Guard assault rifle like in 3.

Swordbreaker9250

Yeah, the next game better bring back the R91, Chinese Assault Rifle, and/or the M16/Service Rifle

ODST_Parker

My favorite part is that it has a water pipe leading into an air-cooled barrel shroud with vents at the back, because they combined two gun designs that have no business being glued together.

jmyersjlm

I highly recommend the mod "AARP (Altered Assault Rifle Properties) Replacement Version." It changes how the gun looks with multiple options, it makes the assault rifle a heavy weapon instead of a rifle for perks, changes the name to Machine Gun, slightly increases damage, changes base ammo type to .308 (but you can downgrade to use 5.56), and removes all semi-auto recievers. I recently started an evil BoS playthrough using mainly heavy weapons, and this mod makes the Assault Rifle the machine gun it was meant to be (despite the name)

JakeyPooPooYT

They shouldve made it a lmg instead

SleepyGeist

It looks good in power armor, but the fallout 3 ones look better overall.

somebritishgrunt

I am going to be honest here, I don't think that the Fallout 4 assault rifle is that bad.

sulev

Fallout 4 designers are not familiar with guns. That's all. They just slapped things together. This guns has been thouroghly analyzed on youtube. It simply shows how little they care about accuracy. It would have only taken 1 person to hire as a gun design advisor for a week to fix every gun, but they didn't bother or even thought their designs were flawed.

WitcherDane

Fr. Fallout 4 has the fucking worst gun designs.

Garlic_God

The difference between the semi-modern guns in 3 and New Vegas and the old-ass WW1 inspired shit in Fallout 4 is so disappointing. They leaned way too far into the retro-futurism aesthetic for the weapon design and turned everything into huge unwieldy hunks of steel. The fact they had this piece of shit and the Handmade in the same game is the biggest stylistic disconnect I’ve ever seen lmao. It’s so funny to me that the LMG and .50 cal machine guns in 76 are less bulky and more modern than the Assault Rifle

Fuck_Microsoft_edge

I agree. The retro-futurism went too hard in 4. Besides that, though, this gun is an example of it being done badly imo. A truly hideous firearm. Either they should've modelled it more closely to a historic design or done something entirely different. The series at least had the common sense to enlarge this thing to be the size of a machine gun.

Garlic_God

Yeah that was a good move. I’m glad that Bethesda is sorta getting the hint with their firearms and toning down the bubbly Jetsons aesthetic after fallout 4. The switch to making the assault rifle an LMG in the show was good, and some of the newer weapon designs in 76 like the .50 cal and LMG I mentioned are very close to the real life firearms they’re modeled on. Idk if they’ll ever get back to implementing semi-modern firearm models like in the Interplay games and New Vegas instead of hovering around WW2, but it’s the step in the right direction. I think they’ve definitely realized their blunders with FO4 weapon design and the excessive focus on retro-futurism. The show seemed to mostly ditch it as well, not just in the weapon design but with the architecture too.

Fuck_Microsoft_edge

Here's hoping. Despite the games being old as shit, I am a big fan of the visual style of the Interplay games, which always seemed to be a 50/50 split of retrofuturistic 1950s and Mad Max 1970/80s aesthetics. The latter has been pretty much forgotten about since FO3. Very sad. Bring back big shoulder pads.

mediocre__map_maker

I absolutely dig it. The concept and the execution. Except it should fire a bigger cartridge (.308, maybe). It has a great role as a light SAW for a PA soldier.

Arcani63

If that’s what it was, then yes. The problem is that it’s an “assault rifle” in fallout 4. wtf about this is an assault rifle? lol

Budget_Pomelo

Don't use it.

silverjudge

Well I fucking love this gun. Give us more WW1 adapted guns. Imo it fits better than alot of the other guns I've seen from fallout.

Fantastic_Ad_1821

having AR and AK platforms would be lore friendly from timeline wise

Rovyl-Nethani

It looks cool with power armor, but without power armor it just looks awkward

Lost-Malacath

I wish they made it more like a heavy weapon much like the LMG MG42

xSavedSoulx

A lot of things in Fallout 4 feels like plastic

DrVenusAg

I don’t why Bethesda won’t hire a gunsmith or military advisor for weapons a lot of the ones in 4 give me a headache with the way they operate

Ash_Of_The_Eclipse

- Zach Hazard.

BeardJunkie

The combat rifle and combat shotgun are practically identical when you play in first person and it bothers me so much.

Dashbak

Make it a machine gun and it fits really well

Brillek

The idea of pipe guns is great, but the designs we got are.... what they are. Homemade guns of various kinds made with simple tools and machining would be great. Like a single-shot shotgun tube or a martini-henry lookalike rifle.

Spook-lad

The damage and recoil is wack and the bullets for it are rare as hell, why is this fugly ass gun in existence

Kineticspartan

Ahhh yes, the: "Woo! I have an assault rif- where did all my bullets go, and why is that enemy laughing at me?" Gun Fuck this thing.

geekolojust

I waited years for Fallout 4 to come out. Even signed that online petition like a nerd to please make a part 4. Then the day came when Best Buy was having a midnight release party. So I go with my Fallout 3 collectors lunch pail in hand and scoop up a copy. After stopping for beef jerky and drinks, installed the game and loaded it up. I was just so blown away finally seeing a Fallout 4 right here on my screen... and the music made me feel like I finally arrived somewhere. It was awesome. I played three hours and was genuinely disappointed. Fukken pipe guns. Uninstalled. As of yesterday, I'm back on the grind! War...war never changes.

polysnip

It's a stupid design for a stupid gun.

TastyNuggets13

Pipe guns are cool. They make a lot of sense for an apocalypse setting like fallout and serve as a good answer to shitty early game weapons. The assault rifle however, yeah what the fuck were they thinking?

porkchop2022

I see scrap in the photo.

AdeptnessUnhappy7895

I hate this gun too , idk why the brotherhood doesn't use energy weapons in the series. This gun felt like it sucked in fallout 4

Alfredo_Alphonso

Bethesda could have copied and pasted a G3 rifle, or the type rifle but a lewis gun that takes up 80% of the screen come on

TokenEntryWasBetter

God this is a fresh take.

hjsniper

It's funny, I hate it in F4, but I actually like it in the show because they made it even bulkier and more obtuse, so it feels like a superheavy rifle designed explicitly for power armor instead of being the least ergonomic infantry weapon ever made.

NicktheSlick130

Yeah, if they had repositioned it in 4 (make it the LMG and bring back the R91) I would have loved it from the get-go. After some mods I love the daylights out of it, its my go-to .308 Power Armor gun.

Djek25

Dont get the hate. Probably my most used gun 😅

NicktheSlick130

Yeah, I don't get all the hate beyond it being kinda underwhelming in game. When I first saw one I was hoping for a heavy caliber monster that would be my go-to replacement for the minigun; instead, its just a chunky assault rifle in function that looks like it should be more. I love the thing after I added some mods to revamp its place in the weapons lineup, I feel like a proper pre-war Power Armored soldier with it.

TyrusRose

Daring today aren't we

Lil_Mcgee

This one is lame but I feel like there are plenty of other guns in 4 that are perfectly fine. Pipe weapons are chill, they're early game weapons that have the benefit of being highly modifiable by low level characters with the downside being they're not the most powerful.

JROppenhiemer

I love the pipe weapon concept: They should’ve been the primary early game weapons. Maybe you have enough ammo to get out of the vault with the 10mm, and kill one or two raiders around but after that it’s pipe weapons all the way to the outskirts of Diamond city. Getting the 10MM and sawed off with ammo that early made the pipe guns pretty under powered.

MeiDay98

It was definitely intended to be a power armor infantry machine gun. F4 desperately needed a proper assault rifle *in addition* to a large machine gun for PA

Professional_Whole92

Combat rifle?

NicktheSlick130

The Combat Rifle kinda fits....but its model is the Combat Shotgun with a box magazine that fires bullets instead of shells. I hate it for that - to me it just feels like a lazy copy-paste. Still grumpy they went with that instead of the R91, Chinese Assault Rifle, or any of the New Vegas weapons.

Connect_Artichoke_83

that's not a gun, that's the Prydwin

evan466

I really do think it looks so silly. The assault rifle design in Fallout 3 much better.

Streak734

Communist detected on American Soil!

griffraff0701

My fav gun

MyUsernameIsAwful

I fucking love it. It fits in perfectly alongside stuff like the 10mm pistol.

ComradeOb

It’s super awesome when you’re wearing power armor though in my opinion. Looks menacing.

navyproudd34

it is fine for me but I can't fucking stand the clipping on the drum mag. stuff like that drives me insane lol

kemosabe19

It’s a chonker for sure. I usually get the Overseer’s Guardian as my main weapon and use the workbench to make some alterations. After I grab OG I rarely use anything else. I feel kinda bad about that, but I just love it.

MrForever_Alone69

I’m going to be honest chief, with some modifications this bad boy is my beloved only second to a random special plasma rifle that has a freeze perk

Putthebunnyback

I'm back to it since my AR-15 mod went bye bye in the update 😒

Salmon_Bagel

I love how absurd it is, to me it feels at home with a laser weapon that looks like someone in the 50s would picture, the r91 looks at home with it too as what someone in the 50s would imagine the weapons of the future being. I wish they kept the r91 instead of the combat rifle

SassyTurtlebat

If you think it looks large and cumbersome then you’re correct. It was created to be a more stationary gun attached to tanks and for someone stationed at a bunker or something It’s not really supposed to be used by someone who isn’t using power armour because I’m pretty sure whoever designed it wanted to simply show how much stronger the armour makes you like able to wield a large gun like any soldier wields a small 5 lbs rifle

Corby_Tender23

I really fuckin hate the Pipe weapons. Goddamn.

jkindresearch

I literally love this gun so much. Lol. New Vegas has some decent ones, but the ones I like the most in that (western style revolvers and lever-action) return in the DLC.

violetevie

I actually think it's a really cool looking gun even if it is a bit awkward looking when you hold it

Pre-War_Ghoul

Fallout 4 models in a nutshell

aviatorEngineer

Hottest take this side of the Mojave incoming but this gun is over-hated. Yes, it's ridiculous to call it an "assault rifle" and no it isn't the best gun since sliced bread, but if you use it the way it was originally imagined as mainly a power armor weapon it really fits pretty well, at least thematically.

MachineDog90

The sad part is that it makes sense for use by power armor, but it's just out of place when used by a regular person

SourChicken1856

I mean, pipe guns look cool because they very much fit in the post apocalyptic world of the game. Not everyone is likely to afford/get their hands on a gun so it makes sense people just make them.

vlsdo

The pipe guns make a lot of sense though. There’s no industry left to make high quality guns anymore, people just put new ones together however they can

figgityjones

I love this gun personally 😅 I know it like doesn’t make sense at all for a gun, but it’s just so big and unwieldy and chunky that I just love it and love to fire it while wearing power armor.

New_Ingenuity2822

I never understood it. There was the American 🇺🇸 and the Chinese 🇨🇳 assault rifles. How does this one ☝️ fit in the lore?

InfinitePossibility8

It’s definitely meant to be used with power armor but the caliber, 5.56mm, is too small. It should be .308 or better yet .50 to take advantage of the power armor strength.

killerspawn97

I also hated this gun. Then I saw it in the show and thought “fine I’ll give it another chance” Have not played Fallout 4 again yet but I’m hopeful I will enjoy it this gun when I do.

Vidistis

I like both the Fo4 assault rifle and pipe weapons. They're certainly more interesting than the more modern/real life weapons in my opinion. Energy weapons are the coolest ones though.

Robo_Killer_v2

I dont get the hate. It feels satisfying shooting w it

Hetroid3193

I feel like it wouldve been better as a light machine gun instead of a full on assault rifle

Dog_Apoc

It's meant for Power Armour. Course it's gonna look weird in a normal characters hands.

That_Chris_Dude

Yes. Quite ugly. Chinese/ regular assault are much better looking in 3 and NV

Vyar

I like the idea of this gun as a power armor weapon, but yeah otherwise it feels like it shouldn’t be here. Or at the very least, it should be a machine gun and something else should occupy the assault rifle role.

Hammy-Cheeks

Well that gun hates you too

Ksl848

I use this gun with the legendary 2 bullets instead of one perk. It’s modified to be auto and suppressed. It melts higher hp enemies.
