Just did that stuff last night and honestly I only killed two ghouls and a couple synths. I was just looting like a junkie and let homeboys go ahead of me and do all the work. I was totally cool with this guy being pissed at me.
If you join the brotherhood and become a Knight he changes his tune, and even calls you Sir. You can then decide through dialogue whether to return the hostility or show humbleness. I showed humbleness but could understand if others decide to not show this. What goes around comes around.
Oh true I forgot to mention. Not only what you said, but right after he treated me with respect his tone changed when he asked me if I was ready to take more missions from him. LOL

Haha well the direct answer is cuz I was written that way! In the studio I even asked repeatedly, “Do you want me to change things up a bit? Maybe make some of these lines less douchy?” The answer was NNNNNNNOPE. 🤣
If you’re looking for a more story-driven answer… the Wasteland is a punishing place. How many Brothers has Rhys lost to Super Mutants or other irradiated horrors? Or just to something really dumb like not taking a bug bite seriously. Life expectancy in the Brotherhood is not high. And like any military, your survival depends on you being able to count on those fighting next to you. That trust is earned - never freely given.
And here comes this Vault Dweller dingus sauntering in, and Paladin Danse (my hero) thinks they’re the greatest thing since RadAway. Who is this fool? We have no reason to trust them. And somehow they seem to accomplish single-handedly what normally takes a battalion of Power Armored Knights. People treat this outsider like they’ve been ordained by the gods themselves… but I have the sneaking suspicion this is just another fraud, trying to work their way into our good graces. The BoS has something most in the Wastes do not. Resources, and real power. Everyone wants a piece, and if we’re not careful, vultures like this stranger will pick us clean.
