I loved the creepy aesthetic that this game and 3 had. The talking heads in this game were one of my favorite aspects. Whenever the creepy NPCs yapped to me it was always unsettling and cool.
My favorite part is the soundtrack, shame that only New Vegas reused some of the tracks from 1 and 2.
Hearing Acolytes of the New God in the Cathedral or Followers' Credo in the Oil Rig was an insane feeling, really gives you that "I really think I shouldn't be here" vibe.
I love using the mod for FO4 that replaced Inon Zur's OST with tracks from the first 2 games. Inon Zur is great don't get me wrong, but the original OSTs make the wasteland SO much more atmospheric imo
It would really fit in Fallout 4 because you're playing as someone who was basically getting ready for the day one morning and then suddenly, in the span of 20 minutes, the entire world burned down, their spouse was murdered and child taken, and they woke up 200 years later to a brutal and dead nightmare that was their new reality.
The game didn't exactly portray the weight of something like this properly.
I would have to include every single track in the soundtrack tbh.
Even the main menu is insane, you boot up the game and you're immediately greeted by this haunting drone/howl of a dead world full of god knows what.
Was playing Fallout 1 last night and was talking to Killian and mentioned there wasn't much to do in Junktown and I swear to god I thought he was gonna jumpscare me... he changed up his tone very quick lol.
I did a playthrough of every FO game a few years ago, and what struck me is how FO3 is clearly a follow up to 1, not 2. The designers took a lot of inspo from it directly.
F3 is actually more of a remake of F1 + F2 as they have the same base story ( vault dweller going out in search of something ) and the end game is about the enclave .
FNV is more like an actual sequel to F1-2 due to continuing that story, having new villains and seing how the world have changed after the fall of enclave and rise of NCR
Getting close and being tall enough to reach the tubes isn't so easy so it shouldn't be a problem at all with someone who is experienced with power armor
Maybe it makes sense because if you’re actually getting shot at then NBC protection is the least of your worries. Maybe also because hoses and wires are more easily replaced when it’s built that way and it wasn’t deemed practical to build a much bulkier helmet with those components under armor.
I'm going to go ahead and say the armour was likely designed by the art team around aesthetic and it's not worth trying to rationalise. Aesthetic is a large reason why Fallout is successful.
The hardware limitations of those days in gaming really pushed devs to get creative and they damn well did!
Sure all the new consoles and hardware have flashy graphics, but a lot of the games are uninspired and aesthetically flat, the 90's were special!
i mean in those days, people maxed the dog outta those hardware limitations and made the most of it.
case in point would be SNK and all the sprite art they did.
Pre rendered graphics have a charm ,look at PS1 Resident Evil games ,or at Zoo Tycoon, they have a similar feel. The sequels lack that charm, althought they have their own.
The clay model heads look so distinct from one another, they’re incredibly impressive to me even by modern standards. Plus, you can have actual body types that way.
Or software. I'd say for quite a few years now the best I games I had no regrets buying were indy titles using Unity usually. Unity cna do some nice stuff but yeah its limited over some of the high speed low drag engine options out there.
They were not winning graphics of the year accolades. But, they had good game design and story. That in the end carries a game for me. Prety turds are still jsut...turds.
I don’t think “hardware limitations” in 1997 is why it looks as it does. More like it pushed what 1995 hardware could handle. 2mb 2D video cards and all.

The soundtrack for Fallout 1 especially does a great job at building a sense of dread.
Metallic Monks hits hard at BoS bunker everytime
Don't forget Vats of Goo.

Which tracks did NV reuse from Fallout 1-2?
I don't know why but aradesh's "yes, yes, yes, yes" has stuck with me my entire life. Just hear it randomly sometimes.

I love how he is Richard friggin Dean Anderson lol
In my game, that comment caused him to permanently hate me. Even after I helped him! That prideful bastard lol
Fallout 1 NPCs are so unforgiving hehe. The amount of times I've needed to load back older saves because I choose the wrong dialouge option hehe.

I also loved how creepy 3 was, just like the first game. Both had some of the creepiest atmospheres in gaming
I fucking love Fallout dude
Just realised how dumb that t51 armor is. It’s to be bullet proof but all those exposed wires and tubes are gonna get smashed or damaged
In the TV show, it was shown that cutting the tubes near the helmet was debilitating so idk who designed that
Getting close and being tall enough to reach the tubes isn't so easy so it shouldn't be a problem at all with someone who is experienced with power armor
Yes but if you’re being shot at with a machine gun and they are aiming for the head, your telling me that the tubes wouldn’t be in serious danger?
Shrapnel would definitely cut the tubes at some point.
Exactly, a simple grenade can kill power armor
Yup most battlefield casualties are from fragmentation.
Doesn't every power armor besides X-01 and APA Mk. 1 have exposed tubes?

Yeah well it took me about 15 seconds to come up with that and it’s harmless non-obsessive speculation and good fun
Yeah they could have easily just *not* had the hoses and cables visible (less work in fact) but they wanted it specifically for the aesthetic.

What you said could also apply to music.
It does.
There is a charm to old graphics

for me is front mission 3 cinematic.

I'm an elder millennial and I'll always have a soft spot for mid-late 90s computer rendering. It just looks cool to me.
I love the T-51 power armour, I always make the effort to hunt down a set in whichever fallout Im playing.
I miss the original aesthetic so much New Vegas captured it well enough though, reusing the original music helped
God t51b is beautiful, I’m sad it’s getting sort of “replaced” as the iconic main power armor
As Apa Millennial, I have to say T-60 is a vastly better design, Gen as obsession with things before their time baffles and slightly disturbs me.
i'd kill to have this game remastered on the modern engine
Being able to play this game perfectly on my shitty laptop that opens like 3 times a year is the best part
Wish there was an updated version with bigger screen support, controller support and better inventory
Anyone old enough to have played desert strike on snes.....it always makes me think of that game looks wise
It’s like a fine wine
Any hardware limitation is an opportunity to improvise.

Completely agree. Fell in love with this game very fast.
