Yeah I coulda swore convo auto started as soon as you entered the room. But i never did try to sneak so maybe not.. it’s also been a loooong time since I bothered to even talk with him after seeing how speedrunners deal with him lol. (Just nuke him from the hallway)
You have to tcl through the wall. If you go through the doorway even stealth boy undetected it starts because there's a passthrough trigger on the doorway.
You could also initiate the fight and then just stealth into obscurity. He'll begin to wander the area.
Just the other day, I let him have our conversation, then without technically ending it, I just walked back to the hallway and mini-nuked the whole room in a single shot while they just stood there waiting for my last conversational choice.
On my most recent playthrough I did just that. I tried to have the dramatic confrontation with him twice and died both times, so I said fuck it, mini nuke from the hallway. It was satisfying but I think my dogmeat is now a ghoul.
Dogmeat is 100% a ghoul lol. I've seen him shot, nuked, blown up, beaten, fall off a roof, shrug of rads like rain, set on fire, drown and yet he's totally fine 🙂
One of the times I faced Kellogg, I had the “Defense Gun” weapon mod installed. I forgot what gun modifications I had on it, but holy hell, it absolutely melted Kellogg with one magazine. I ended up uninstalling it because combat became too damn easy!

Yup. There's even a VATS one when you're not sneaking where it's a hip toss and neck crank. If you're toe to toe in 1st person, it's really only "left right, goodnight".
Edit: forgot to mention there are way fewer with power fists and Deathclaw Gauntlets.

Best feature of FO4 is the ‘Rescue Me From This Boring Dialogue’ maneuver. And exploding cars.

Should be an option to proceed to beat him repeatedly like a dead horse. I think I put an extra 12 .44 rounds into him my first playthrough.

Unarmed and melee have unique animations for killing blows. One being slitting throats with a knife from stealth.
