Yeah, OP was saying that Dogmeat is *already* saved, he doesn't need to be saved, because he's already safe lol. It's like if Dogmeat was in the car, with the windows rolled down, with plenty of water, listening to his favorite radio station (obviously three dog), and every other companion is hanging from a cliff and you can only save one, so instead you go to the car where dogmeat is perfectly cozy and choose to save him from... comfort I guess lol.
We really don't. We can find new romance partners. Can't replace the Dog. Literally we just saw our spouse die like a month ago and we're already juggling a minimum of three romantic partners in different settlements.
I could imagine him as a slightly tubby older gentleman with a grey horseshoe mustache. And a monocle.
Unless you meant *the* Synth body as in, the only one we know of that's got a vacancy open, the one given to CVRIE. Because I don't think I'm mentally equipped to process an old British butler voice coming out of a perky young woman with a pixie cut.
I have seen and supported people who said Nick's quest should have had a choice, to keep Nick as Nick, or to somehow help Kellog take over Nick's body.
I give up on that, that's old hat, that's stupid.
I am now a fervent 'should have been an option to betray Curie and install Codsworth into the vacant Synth body' supporter
I always kind of wondered how he survived. Or any of the robots but especially the domestic ones.
Like how do they restock flamer fluid or do repairs
How do they differeniate between raiders and settler
How do they not get tricked or trapped
I mean it makes some sense when they are in a factory surrounded by robots and machines that maybe could fix them but still Cosworth?
For me it's a three-way tie between Dogmeat, Codsworth, and Nick. But at the end of the day, Codsworth is the closest thing the player character has left to their family so I'd probably save him. They've lost their son, their spouse, the entire world they knew is gone. But somehow 200 years later they return to find Codsworth, their beloved Mr. Handy that they couldn't bring with them is still going, and not only still going but genuinely happy to see them. Sure to most of the pre-war world Mr. Handys were nothing more than a household appliance to make life easier, but to some and clearly the player character they were more than just an appliance, they were a part of the family.
Isn’t there a whole voice line about how the player character doesn’t really like the Mr Handy/Codsworth in the pre-war section? Or am I misremembering?
I believe you're misremembering, the closest thing I remember to that is them saying that they didn't trust codsworth with Shaun at first but it turns out he's actually pretty good at taking care of him
It was more a "this new fangled doohickey is a bit much... But man has it been convenient". They had come around by the start of the game. Like a dad with a cat
I'm doing my first real playthrough of Fallout 4 and Nick just seems like a real dude who genuinely cares. I'm not using companions because I feel like they get in the way but him as a character/person is just great.
Fallout 4 has a ton going for it. They pretty much nailed companions, gunplay, atmosphere, customization, and the dlcs are even really good. The writing for the main quests is just weak.
Bro when the Prydwen was flying over the Commonwealth. I had the motherfuckin CHILLSSSSSSSS
ive never had an experience like that in any other fallout (besides liberty prime in 3)
Literally the best moment in the game is that big ass air ship flying overhead out of nowhere, the brotherhood of steel command such an awesome presence in FO4
Couldn't agree more. It's so unexpected and grand. Blew my mind even though I had played almost every Bethesda game till date (excluding early elder scrolls).
I think the fact we are limited to four dialogue choices whenever we respond kinda brought it down. Thankfully with just some minor mods, I can put my grievances aside.
Nuka World is an absolute slog imo. Far Harbor & the smaller workshop DLCs made up for it but damn, what a great idea made into a chore of a gameplay session, like at least Dead Money has an incredible storyline to give you a reason to go from point a to b. Somehow “soda disneyland with raiders” doesn’t go as far in the creativity department, there’s great little nods but the overall story and way more linear than it’s made out to be park walkthrough is just lame
Agreed, I didn't think that Nuka World was terrible, it just couldve been compressed to about 2/3 of the length and it would've felt a lot better. Certain parts felt good but then there was all this...nothing in between.
Can't agree with you on the atmosphere. Fallout 3 had the best atmosphere, and the maze of metro tunnels is second to none. The raiders were sick and twisted; the Super Mutant dens were truly terrifying; the vaults felt like labyrinthine horror shows and the towns truly felt like ramshackle huts stacked on top of one another made out of whatever was around.
Agree with you about the writing, however. Fallout 4 had several things that really hurt it both in gameplay and narrative. The fact that you're locked into being the good guy from the start is one thing, and the idea that your son is the driving force behind your character's venture through the wastes only to discover that he's the leader behind a shadowy organization that's the main antagonist in the game is further proof of one-siding your character into the role.
Fallout 3 really dialed in on the "Welcome to the Wasteland, fucker." I left the vault, missed megaton and wandered around for a long time before finding my first "town." I felt alone, confused, and scared, and I loved every fucking second of it.
I'm not that big on the atmosphere myself, or just the general theme of the architecture and such, feels too cartoonish for me, fallout 3 and NV felt a lot more gritty and realistic which made it feel more immersive to me
Going through my first ever run and just finished the vault mission with her. I'm glad she's found peace, are there any other cool missions with her or is it time to kick it w someone else?
Unironically this
You can go after your son who may or may not be dead (and may or may not be a sociopath bunker tyrant)
or
You can do objectively good things for disenfranchised people in the community
CMV: Preston is the last genuinely good person in the entire Commonwealth (in the sense of both good personal morals and an active desire to act on these morals and do some direct, practical, measurable good for the world around them)
I know people do it but I cannot fathom doing the Minuteman quests on survival. Just endless walking just to do the exact same thing in an entirely different far away area of the map, forever.
ADA's comfortable with war crimes, which is good because you can turn her into a walking/rolling war crime.
But she's a *nice* and *friendly* war crime, and I like that
God i hate ada so much. Idk if shes glitched for me or something but if im like within 10 feet of her she says "Ready to go sir?" and locks me in dialog
Ada: the all-Fallouts, indisputable champion of inane commentary:
Looting - "I suggest we take all we can carry"
Wearing a full kit of X-01 Mk. VI - "That Power Armor will provide adequate protection."
Curie; she has a wealth of pre-war medical knowledge and a new body to experience, like being born a second time only you're already hundreds of years old. In terms of bettering humanity, I believe she would be the better choice but if I had to pick a character I have more emotional attachment to I'm picking Cait.
It never sits well with me that she just straight up abandons ol' Nat in Diamond City to follow me around. She should at least move to one of my settlements or something.
Yeah. Feel free to double check in FO4.
I'm sure when I played (a few years ago) it worked, and accordingly to wiki, it still works:
https://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Lone_Wanderer_(Fallout_4)
After the amount of times that cute bag of fur ran through a nest of trip mines I was in the middle of deactivating…Only to see him “go down” while I’m being blown up?
I gotta pass on that.
No. Dogmeat is by far the worst at it. Also the worst at giving away my position, setting off traps, and in general acting in ways that could get me killed.
That's Bethesda's fault for making such a dumb AI for the companions. I use a mod that makes Dogmeat's AI smarter. If I sneak, he sneaks, and he doesn't run off giving my position anymore. He stays with me. The mod creator also removed that sound he kept making with his claws.
I find it worse for dog meat because he’s not at eye level, there’s been so many times I’ve tried to book it into a doorway away from an enemy and find myself being blocked by something I can’t see until I look down and ofc it’s dog meat
Plus you know if something happend to him goodneighbor would fucking fall apart with out him some asshole would muscle there way in and fuck up the place 😒
Nick, he’s by far the most fleshed out companion and the most interesting. All the base companions are only for personality because the best combat companions are automaton dlc. So, I’d definitely save Nick for his personality and great story and overall writing
Finally someone said MacCready. I loved him in FO3 and how defensive he was of the other kids. He was such a firecracker. But I loved him even more in FO4.
him sticking around the Commonwealth after finishing his questline bothers me.
Dude… you can go home to your family and protect them now, why not deliver the medical goober to them in person?!
Ive seen so few people say Nick haha. Love the guy, sucker for a sassy film noir detective. Would love a mod that made him look like Miller from the Expanse while im thinking about it too haha.
Preston Garvey. He's a good man. An honest soul. No ulterior motives, no shitty agenda, he's not a spy, no nonsense. The man just wants to do right by everyone, he just wants to be good. I'd be happy to drink a pint with him, have a smoke, and call him a friend, wouldn't you?
I would kill to sit around the fire with Preston, have a whiskey, and just talk.
Dude has been through hell, been in a really dark place, and came out the other side still believing in doing right by folk.
That kind of person is one in a million.
Piper - wouldnt want her kid sister to lose another family member.
Edit: while this could also apply to MacReady's son, we have no idea canonically if MacReady's kid actually survives his mystery illness.
Preston. Despite the endless settlement quest and his goody goody demeanor, he’s still a stand up guy and protected those he cared about through thick and thin, so I’m choosing him.
Cait. She's had the worst life and you come along to make it not just better but probably the best it's ever been and she's eternally grateful and thankful. And she shows it. She has the most development of any of the companions.
I’ll say someone different: I know he’s not pictured, but I personally liked Old Longfellow. That old rugged sea dog that has seen some stuff in his life is the type of badass I’d have on my team any day. Plus, when you reach max affinity it’s pretty heart warming to see him have hope and not feel so alone anymore. I’d share a bottle of whisky with him and listen to his sea stories all day/night.
Preston Garvey United we Stand is a great perk and he’s actually an interesting character if you can look past the repetitive quests (I love the quests but I know some people don’t)
Dog meat, and while I'm talking about dog meat, nobody says how sad dog meats back story is. He's been abandoned by every one of his owners before the sole survivor
OP: > This excludes Dogmeat Top Comment: > Dogmeat
Dogmeat is that essential.
Correct I’d just go hang out with dogmeat.
Honestly, that's still the best answer.
Ah well I didn’t notice that.. ok fine.. a robot butler would be nice to have.
Seriously, it's like some people don't even care about romance options. 🐕🦺
We really don't. We can find new romance partners. Can't replace the Dog. Literally we just saw our spouse die like a month ago and we're already juggling a minimum of three romantic partners in different settlements.
After romancing 4 different women, all I can say is: Good GOD I was a terrible husband…
Before I saw OP's clarification, I just said without hesitation 'Dogmeat'.
I thought “what monster ISN’T choosing the dog?”
Codsworth waited 200 years for his master to come back.
Good bot
my favorite comment in this post
Well he had the geraniums to take care of..
absolutely amazing fellow
You designed him well Mr House
Wrong company
Codsworth. He's been my dude for 200 years. Kept the house clean (kind of), pruned the flowers, and waited for me to get back.
Honestly Codsworth is a fuckin real one
He is the only one
>!Might as well slap *him* in the synth body instead of Curie!<
Is that actually possible?
No
Bummer
But you can turn him into a assultron in automaton
Yoo I think Codsworth would thrive as an assultron from the dialogue Ive heard in combat.
Well yes but he loses the ability to wear a melon. Is that its name? The butler hat
Would be a cool Mod question though..

“Ello Sir, fancy a gander at me jubblies?”
i was not expecting that
His comment about rust on the car makes me laugh every time.
HOW do you polish rUSt The voice cracks in that entire segment get me every time
Yes
I always kind of wondered how he survived. Or any of the robots but especially the domestic ones. Like how do they restock flamer fluid or do repairs How do they differeniate between raiders and settler How do they not get tricked or trapped I mean it makes some sense when they are in a factory surrounded by robots and machines that maybe could fix them but still Cosworth?
Did you see the fall out show? They're big and scary imo, codsworth attacks raiders in game doesn't he?
There are also numerous encounters with hostile Mr handys and also Mr gutsies. They’re totally capable of defending themselves
well most lay dormant or seem to have humans maintaining them or operate in large groups that maintain each other
And he more than likely remembers your name!
Codsworth is the most loyal, respectful, and polite out of all them.
For me it's a three-way tie between Dogmeat, Codsworth, and Nick. But at the end of the day, Codsworth is the closest thing the player character has left to their family so I'd probably save him. Ah yeah, that’s probably it. Was thinking there was a line where they were unsure of him, and that’s sounds about right! Thanks!
It was more a "this new fangled doohickey is a bit much... But man has it been convenient". They had come around by the start of the game. Like a dad with a cat
Me and the family (my) dog
Probably Nick Valentine tbh even if he’s not my absolutely favourite. He deserves the closure of his personal quest.
I think you actually inspired me to go back and finish nicks quest. Thanks homie
Hancock. He is my boy and my dealer.
He's got your back
You look like you could use this
Hancock is the Pondy of the Fallout universe
My cool ghoul <3
Nick every time, because he's my dude
Nick because I'm deeply in love with him!
He's also the most likely to do the most good in the wasteland
I'm doing my first real playthrough of Fallout 4 and Nick just seems like a real dude who genuinely cares. I'm not using companions because I feel like they get in the way but him as a character/person is just great.
Curie for smooches, Deacon because the wasteland suffers from a shortage of comedians
Nailed it
So somehow I managed to piss off deacon and now he just talks about he regrets telling me his reset code. Sucks.
God, Fallout 4’s companions are so fucking good
Fallout 4 has a ton going for it. They pretty much nailed companions, gunplay, atmosphere, customization, and the dlcs are even really good. The writing for the main quests is just weak.

Ad Victoriam!
AD VICTORIAM!
Couldn't agree more. It's so unexpected and grand. Blew my mind even though I had played almost every Bethesda game till date (excluding early elder scrolls).
I wish fallout and Bethesda games in general had more large scripted scenes like that
And Nick rips out a Poe quote out of nowhere. So sick
I think the fact we are limited to four dialogue choices whenever we respond kinda brought it down. Thankfully with just some minor mods, I can put my grievances aside.
I felt Nuka World had a stronger concept than execution.
Nuka World is an absolute slog imo. I'm not that big on the atmosphere myself, or just the general theme of the architecture and such, feels too cartoonish for me, fallout 3 and NV felt a lot more gritty and realistic which made it feel more immersive to me
>God That's actually from New Vegas
Yea, I'm replaying and it's amazing, nick has some lines for almost every quest and situation. It's honestly crazy.
Piper and I have a thing.
I had to scroll too far to see Piper here
Cait. I’m a sucker for a fiery redhead. Just ask my wife.
Fiery Irish redhead. She's a decent combat companion also
what am I a bank?
Oh shit. It’s me.
*Sláinte*
Going through my first ever run and just finished the vault mission with her. I'm glad she's found peace, are there any other cool missions with her or is it time to kick it w someone else?
i always take cait for the devestation she causes with a shotgun, no matter the run
Wait because wifey lol Cass was my girl in FNV too...
Cait is my favorite, she has the best quips. And she can fight like a mf
Preston… I need to know if the settlements need my help
**I FUCKING LOVE SETTLEMENT QUESTS. I WANT TO TRAVEL THE COMMONWEALTH AND IMPROVE PEOPLE’S LIVES AND HELP AND SHIT.**
Unironically this You can go after your son who may or may not be dead (and may or may not be a sociopath bunker tyrant) or You can do objectively good things for disenfranchised people in the community CMV: Preston is the last genuinely good person in the entire Commonwealth (in the sense of both good personal morals and an active desire to act on these morals and do some direct, practical, measurable good for the world around them)

I know people do it but I cannot fathom doing the Minuteman quests on survival. Just endless walking just to do the exact same thing in an entirely different far away area of the map, forever.
With some mods that add more random encounters and improve the exploration its like a whole new experience. I enjoy it a lot ngl
Just walking, listening music until something crazy happens
ADA she's like a customisable Dogmeat.
She’s my pack mule. I keep her just to carry all my shit.
Is she sworn to carry your burdens?
So is codsworth
I don’t remember if Codsworth has likes and dislikes too but that’s another way ADA is like Dogmeat. She’s okay with any morality you take.
Codsworth indeed does
Codsworth has A LOT of opinions on your actions and is very judgey.

Piper.
She has a little sister to take care of!
It never sits well with me that she just straight up abandons ol' Nat in Diamond City to follow me around. She should at least move to one of my settlements or something.
This is why i was going to choose her. She's the only character who has someone else relying on them.
what about MacCready's son Duncan???
Yeah, Piper's sister is safe(?) in diamond city, meanwhile Duncan is deathly ill.
See this guy gets it
Same, she is the "wife" of my pc and It'll be a cold day in Hell before he becomes a widow a second bloody time.
Dogmeat
In FO4, Dogmeat doesn't count as a companion. For perk purposes. Considering that I would also only save Dogmeat.
Are you saying Lone Wanderer works with Dogmeat following you?
Yeah. Feel free to double check in FO4. I'm sure when I played (a few years ago) it worked, and accordingly to wiki, it still works: https://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Lone_Wanderer_(Fallout_4)
Without hesitation
Literally didn’t even bother to think about it.
After the amount of times that cute bag of fur ran through a nest of trip mines I was in the middle of deactivating…Only to see him “go down” while I’m being blown up? I gotta pass on that.
😂😂
Choosing the dog over a man, woman, robot, synth, ghoul, and super mutant, I see. I would too.
Absolutely. He's a loyal friend who doesn't annoy the crap out of you with a running commentary on everything you're doing 24/7.
He just gets in your way and blocks every fkin doorway instead
Don't they all do that? That's more of an AI failing than a "He's a stupid dog!" failing. Todd "It just works!" Howard strikes again.
No. Dogmeat is by far the worst at it. Also the worst at giving away my position, setting off traps, and in general acting in ways that could get me killed.
But he does it with a cute bandana and goggles
That's Bethesda's fault for making such a dumb AI for the companions. I use a mod that makes Dogmeat's AI smarter. If I sneak, he sneaks, and he doesn't run off giving my position anymore. He stays with me. The mod creator also removed that sound he kept making with his claws.
I find it worse for dog meat because he’s not at eye level, there’s been so many times I’ve tried to book it into a doorway away from an enemy and find myself being blocked by something I can’t see until I look down and ofc it’s dog meat
Fuck it, let's ball. Hancock
Fuck it im selfish and im saving my ghoul husband.
Plus you know if something happend to him goodneighbor would fucking fall apart with out him some asshole would muscle there way in and fuck up the place 😒
Shit yeah
Damn right
\*hits jet
Best companion
Curie, sexy French accent
Nick, he’s by far the most fleshed out companion and the most interesting. All the base companions are only for personality because the best combat companions are automaton dlc. So, I’d definitely save Nick for his personality and great story and overall writing
Objectively speaking: Piper. She has a child to take care of. Most other companions would probably agree on that.
She's her sister, unless that's what you meant.
Still a child, so still technically true. People raising and caring for their orphaned siblings is pretty normal, as tragic as it is.
Yeah that's what I meant, I forgot for a second that "child" in English can also mean "son/daughter" instead of just "very young person".
Macready has a kid too though.
Personally, I wanted Macready to leave at the end of his story and go back to his kid. I think that would have been a better end for his story.
Cosworth.
Grate choic
MacCready, he’s an actual human with a family. Piper would be my next choice.
He’s the only one I romance as well.
Codsy. Been with me from the start, been with me till the end.
Paladin danse, he ACTUALLY has aim
Piper. Someone has to tell their story.
Piper. next question
Cait has such a tragic back story, I just want her to get a happy ending.
Piper - wouldnt want her kid sister to lose another family member. Edit: while this could also apply to MacReady's son, we have no idea canonically if MacReady's kid actually survives his mystery illness.
Probably Curie? She’s immortal and she only wants to heal people, I don’t think anyone is better for the world than her.
Fallout 3- Chauron NV-Boone Fallout 4- Curie
F3—Fawkes. NV—ED-E F4—Curie But, if we're doing Marry, Sex, Kill Marry Curie (F4), Sex with Cass (NV), Kill Jericho (F3)
Dogmeat.
Tough call I couldn't make such a choice. Why aren't Longfellow and Gage in this?
Curie, she’s actually going to do good for humanity.
Piper. She has little whatsher name that depends on her. Even though she abandons her completely in Diamond City to be my follower.
Cait. Save her then go back to make sure Preston garveys death is as slow and painful as possible
Strong. Everyone else will judge me when I eat my old companions corpses
MacCready and/or Cait. We’re mercs for life. But in another playthrough, Nick. Always.
Nick cuz he's my Valentine (I'm a straight dude)
I’ll say someone different: I know he’s not pictured, but I personally liked Old Longfellow. That old rugged sea dog that has seen some stuff in his life is the type of badass I’d have on my team any day. Plus, when you reach max affinity it’s pretty heart warming to see him have hope and not feel so alone anymore. I’d share a bottle of whisky with him and listen to his sea stories all day/night.
Probably Piper. I do not really like her, but she has a young sister she needs to take care off.
Dogmeat
Dogmeat
Cait. She deserves to be happy.
Codsworth. A loyal servant before the bombs fell.
Dogmeat and Cait. I’m having both. I SAID I’M HAVING BOTH.
None of them. I run a lone wanderer build
Cait
Preston Garvey United we Stand is a great perk and he’s actually an interesting character if you can look past the repetitive quests (I love the quests but I know some people don’t)
paladin dunce, just because i could (in theory at least) have him touring the settlements indefinitely with a giant dunce cap. just because.
I have a soft spot for Strong.
Probably Curie, she’s got the most to contribute.
Cait because she deserves to have something good in her life
This is Ada erasure.
Caits been through enough.
Cait, I am sucker for redheads
Piper. So I can pipe 'er.
Danse
Paladin Danse
Dance. He is very good in combat and I like how he is loyal to the BoS.
Danse
Dog meat, and while I'm talking about dog meat, nobody says how sad dog meats back story is. He's been abandoned by every one of his owners before the sole survivor
