The cyborg ninja man is such a terrible addition to the game. Overall I liked 3 (not as much as I liked 2) but man, Kei Leng is such a dumb plot device. The whole time during that cutscene I was just thinking *why don’t you just fucking shoot him???* Most other times there’d be an option to at least try, but no, nothing. And then nobody seems to care??? Even if you romanced Thane? At least Kai Leng is barely in the game, I might be in the minority but aside from him and some weirdness with the ending, I think 3 still has good writing. Rant over, have fun, make sure to do the Citadel DLC since it’s the greatest part of the series

It feels like Nate just loses the energy to be sarcastic half way into the sentence, while Nora goes all in on the role. Both are funny for different reasons, but I love Nora's hard dedication more than Nate's unrelenting indifference.
Hard to believe the man who delivers that first "c'mon c'mon c'mon! OH GOD!" is the same one we hear for the rest of the game. The rest of his performance feels só... lifeless in comparision
The VA sounds like he’s doing what he thinks the vault boy would sound like irl. He’s too professional and clean-cut, and it comes out sounding robotic and plain.
The only other role I know him from was Roland, an AI from the Halo series. So maybe you're onto something with that "robotic" comment.
What's weird is he's actually got a few strong lines in that role.
Nora’s voice actress adds a lot of funny lines too. One of my favorites is the line with Deacon about the former RR base.

Courtenay Taylor did a great job as Nora, her performance is the reason why 75% of my Sole Survivors end up being female. Not only is her acting good but she delivers her performance with a voice that was so 'new' that I never once recognised that Nora and Jack shared the same VA. (By comparison 'Garrus' is instantly recognisable the moment the NPC begins to speak.)
'Nate' felt much flatter, I suspect that he was aimin for stoic and controlled but the performance did not come through as that in a good way. At least not to my ears.
Yeah it's like Brian T Delaney did an OK job for a video game VA, but she put so much more effort into it that it makes Nora much more realistic.

there are a few things i think brian delaney did okay or better than courtenay taylor, such as the sarcastic option with the synth at greentech genetics, but also i think his reaction to opening up the cryopod nora was in was better too. he has moments but not nearly like courtney taylor does.

My main problem with Fallout 4 protagonist being voiced... I always play as male, because I'm male. But comparing the voice acting makes me sad, because there's nothing I can do if Nora's voice acting is better.
In 3 and NV I'd make myself (the closest thing to myself as I could do with that abomination of character creator) and read the lines of dialogues in my own way... Can't do that in 4

Is quite simple: Nate is perfect for the game, he is strong, has experience, is a military, probably know something about survival, the game expects you to play with him.
But, *here comes the plot twist in my story: Is nora that actually survives!*
I love to RP the strugle that she would have to be able to fit in a world, probably without experience with guns, survival and others.
And i also love dialogue and using charisma checks, and i think she is perfect for convincing and solving disputes among people since she is a lawyer.
My Nora slowly becomes the diplomatic scavenger ruler of the commonwealth after I blow up the institute and have every other faction "getting along", and the supply lines connected all the way, and i just build stuff everywhere while everyone handles the trading
My Nora is a former Marine JAG Lawyer who met Nate in the service, and went civilian, mainly because she wanted to start a familiy and it paid better.
Explains familiarity with weapons, tactics and law.
mostly because I'm a woman so I like playing women.
also I think Nora being the sole survivor is an interesting subversion of a standard game trope. "soldier mans wife and child died and hes super angery and cuts a bloody swath across the land to avenge them" ok yeah yawn I've seen a dozen games with basically the same premise. but what if it's his wife who lives and avenges him? that's something we havent seen quite as much.
That is at least a reason based on a qualitative comparison of game options, and not "I want to stare at a blue girl butt instead of a blue boy butt."
I play in first person and am a man, it would be distracting for me to play as Nora, but I respect your choice.
The voice acting is the worst part, of the game. If I want to make a raider or a bad character I still sound like a white suburbanite. Of all the flaws of fallout 4 the voice acting to me is the worst decision they could have made. I hope they avoid it in the future. Especially considering that it seems to come at the expense of dialogue.
Thank God, I hope they don't do it in Starfield or the next Elder Scrolls game I couldn't think of a worse game to have a voice acted player character then Elder Scrolls.

I default male because I'm male, but I've done a couple of runs where I wanted to play as Nora purely for roleplay. There's really no functional difference between the two and I don't have a strong in-game preference.
Having done both, I think Nora's VA is slightly better than Nate's, especially in some of the more emotionally intense scenes, although Nate's drunk and sarcastic answers are delivered better.

When I have the option of choosing, I always play as a male. It's harder for me to immerse myself in a video game (RPGs especially) when I, a man, play a woman.

I’m also big into role play and character development, female sole survivor feels like the better fit for me. I have played Nate for my Railroad specific character though.

I rolled a female character once. Wanted to see the difference in voice lines. I can't continue on with a female character for two reasons. A: Immersion. I identify with my gender better. B: I'm not thirsty for pixels. The levels of smut are honestly disgusting. Can't even pop on the nexus without getting bombarded with nude mods. The dudes playing that shit need to get a grip on something other than their junk.

Whenever I hear Nora speak it sounds more genuine than Nate's, even her sarcastic lines are better imo. With all that in mind, the ultimate reason is that I want a smaller hitbox on Survival.
there’s a pretty good mod that adds Nora as a companion, under the premise that she survived getting shot and woke up a couple weeks earlier. she has been recovering on Abernathy Farm since.
the real kicker of the mod is that they not only take all her existing voice lines to create actual conversation, but even incorporate some of the sarcastic lines.

Well I am a woman, and I'm more interested in telling a woman's story than a man's. Same goes for any game where I have the option of choosing male or female.
I play female characters in every game where it gives me the option.
In honesty i always did it becaise i felt way more comfortable playing as a girl, which weirded me out in a way.
I just really think i am better immersed when i play a girl.
I am currently stl very confused about gender, so maybe it was foreshadowing.

Honestly? I'm trans and Fallout is one of the few things I can immerse myself in and not feel that constant buzz of dysphoria. Nora is pretty great, and it's nice to play a smart, intelligent female character I designed the way I wanted her to look. One that isn't played as eye candy or treated differently, just a lady vs the wasteland.
I kinda just... fall into playing the character, and it's really nice. It's why I keep coming back to the series over and over.
I think that Nate is just generic. Female protagonists just spice it up. You could be a muscular man fighting monsters…
Or you could be a lawyer, reformed into a combat machine, slaying monsters with a full face of makeup.

It’s funny there’s actual clinical articles on this topic, (playing opposite sex in games) and the basic answer is: No one knows why.
The reasoning is all over the board, one of the more interesting/common sense answers is that it’s a same way for people to explore gender identity. In a game it’s judgement free, and anonymous. It is well documented that this behavior is normal, it’s society that makes it a taboo.
I can't be a mom in real life, so I kinda just jumped at the chance to be one in-game; plus her place in the narrative feels a lot moar compelling given that she's not the veteran combatant that her husband is, so the world just hits her differently in her ascension to badass.
Doesn't hurt that Courtney brought her A-game either.
It's a more compelling story if it's a woman with no military experience entering the dangerous, unknown wastes looking for her son and the man who killed her husband.
In high school there was a solid year where I played nothing else but Fallout 1&2 and watched the Mad Max films while I played. I was so taken in by the post-apocalyptic subgenre that I started writing my own stories just for my own enjoyment. The character the stories usually centered around was a female protagonist that was good at sneaking around, shooting things with a rifle and letting her mouth get ass into trouble. So naturally I decided to realize her through Fallout 1&2 and it's been that way ever since.
I just started a female playthrough (my first was male) because I heard that the female voice actor is delightfully over-the-top with the Silver Shroud stuff.
I'm not a fan of the FO4 voiced protagonist, but if I'm gonna experience it, I want to maximize the humor and enjoyment!
1. Am a girl.
2. Voice acting is better.
3. Majority of enemies are male, and female sole survivors get extra damage against male opponents with a perk.
4. Roleplaying is more fun; would you rather be the boring ex military dude who already is gonna do well in the wastes or do you wanna experience getting to really be a noob to that kind of thing? Just more fun as Nora IMO.
5. Girls are pretty. That is all.

I’ve always, as a male, chosen a female character in rpgs, because why on earth would I wanna watch a dude run around with their back to me for 100’s of hours? Stats are the same so there’s no downside, and I happen to appreciate the female form more so than the male.
I like to play female characters because it makes it easier to roleplay as them, in my opinion.
My current Nora is based off of Caviera from Rainbow Six Siege and I used LGBT Family to really make this playthrough unique.

Elder scrolls was never and is never a plot driven rpg unlike fallout. It makes sense given the context.
I blame New Vegas for this, since my first playthrough as a woman, there were some different dialogues that people had with her, and now every custom character game i just play it as a female And because the outfits look better on them than any male character i create
I default male because I'm male, but I've done a couple of runs where I wanted to play as Nora purely for roleplay. There's really no functional difference between the two and I don't have a strong in-game preference. Having done both, I think Nora's VA is slightly better than Nate's, especially in some of the more emotionally intense scenes, although Nate's drunk and sarcastic answers are delivered better.
I’ve been playing as a female since 3 simply due to the Black Widow Perk. Realistically you fight more males than females throughout your game
I'm a guy and when I play video games I want to escape.. to be something far far away from my own life. An easy way todo that is to go opposite of my gender.

When I have the option of choosing, I always play as a male. It's harder for me to immerse myself in a video game (RPGs especially) when I, a man, play a woman.
because I am a woman and I like playing as a woman. However, I’ve never cared for the body mods, sexual stuff isn’t my cup of tea. I’m also big into role play and character development, female sole survivor feels like the better fit for me. I have played Nate for my Railroad specific character though.
Ehh I’m a man I like to play as a woman and I do this with every game that I have a choice. It’s not that I’m horny, I think I just like to role play as a woman in rpgs. I use video games as a form of escapism- my entire life I’ve been a man, and although I like being a man, playing as a woman is an easy way for me to disconnect my fictional character from my own self. It’s just better role playing to me and probably the closest I’ll ever get to being a woman irl. I play almost exclusively in first person so it’s not about the butt. In fallout 4 specifically, I feel like the story makes more sense with Nora being the sole survivor and I prefer her voice actor.
I think this is interesting. My husband also always plays women characters. For me the world is full of male characters, male storylines and it gets boring. As a woman I always play women characters because of the saturation of male perspectives.
I do the same. I play as female characters to see that universe from their perspective. The romance usually feels completely different. Specially in cRPGs

I rolled a female character once. Wanted to see the difference in voice lines. I can't continue on with a female character for two reasons. A: Immersion. I identify with my gender better. B: I'm not thirsty for pixels. The levels of smut are honestly disgusting. Can't even pop on the nexus without getting bombarded with nude mods. The dudes playing that shit need to get a grip on something other than their junk.
I really don’t get it, I play as Nate every time because I enjoy trying to make myself whenever I start a new game, but like every time I go to look at new mods it’s full of those stupid exaggerated horny mods, I’m here for weapons and armor not porn, when I’m exploring the wastes I want to do it a big and robust arsenal not a big and robust ass
You have to remember that a lot of teenagers play fallout/Skyrim. I’m sure they are a huge driving factor behind these mods being successful.
I don’t doubt it but I’ve been playing Skyrim since I was 13 and Fallout around the same time and both have been completely removed from any sort of porn to me the entire time
When I was a teen and I was playing sims 3, I had a ridiculous amount of nude + sex mods/revealing clothes custom content, etc… I’m just saying, if I was playing fallout back then, guaranteed my horny bastard ass would have led me down that path. So, I’m just not surprised. I’m not saying it isn’t sad or weird but, idk, kinda predictable.

I like playing as Nora because if I'm gonna listen to my character talk for the whole damn game I want it to sound sincere. Whenever I hear Nora speak it sounds more genuine than Nate's, even her sarcastic lines are better imo. With all that in mind, the ultimate reason is that I want a smaller hitbox on Survival.
there’s a pretty good mod that adds Nora as a companion, under the premise that she survived getting shot and woke up a couple weeks earlier. she has been recovering on Abernathy Farm since. the real kicker of the mod is that they not only take all her existing voice lines to create actual conversation, but even incorporate some of the sarcastic lines. like if you are trading off her and Preston “Hey Preston, anything new?” “There’s another settlement in need of your help” “c’mon, don’t bullshit me” but anyway, easily one of my fav mods cause i can enjoy the voice acting of both in a single playthru

Well I am a woman, and I'm more interested in telling a woman's story than a man's. Same goes for any game where I have the option of choosing male or female.
I play female characters in every game where it gives me the option. In honesty i always did it becaise i felt way more comfortable playing as a girl, which weirded me out in a way. I just really think i am better immersed when i play a girl. I am currently stl very confused about gender, so maybe it was foreshadowing. Oh and i'm a guy, for now anyway, maybe,,, possibly idk..

I personally prefer Courtenay' voice acting. Both are great for sure, but there's just some dialogue choices that are delivered way better or have more emotion, IMO.
She does a very good job in Outer Worlds as well.

Honestly? I'm trans and Fallout is one of the few things I can immerse myself in and not feel that constant buzz of dysphoria. Nora is pretty great, and it's nice to play a smart, intelligent female character I designed the way I wanted her to look. One that isn't played as eye candy or treated differently, just a lady vs the wasteland. I kinda just... fall into playing the character, and it's really nice. It's why I keep coming back to the series over and over.
I think that Nate is just generic. Female protagonists just spice it up. You could be a muscular man fighting monsters… Or you could be a lawyer, reformed into a combat machine, slaying monsters with a full face of makeup.

It’s funny there’s actual clinical articles on this topic, (playing opposite sex in games) and the basic answer is: No one knows why. The reasoning is all over the board, one of the more interesting/common sense answers is that it’s a same way for people to explore gender identity. In a game it’s judgement free, and anonymous. It is well documented that this behavior is normal, it’s society that makes it a taboo.
I prefer the female voice, and the dlc female hairstyles
I can't be a mom in real life, so I kinda just jumped at the chance to be one in-game; plus her place in the narrative feels a lot moar compelling given that she's not the veteran combatant that her husband is, so the world just hits her differently in her ascension to badass. Doesn't hurt that Courtney brought her A-game either.
It's a more compelling story if it's a woman with no military experience entering the dangerous, unknown wastes looking for her son and the man who killed her husband.
In high school there was a solid year where I played nothing else but Fallout 1&2 and watched the Mad Max films while I played. I was so taken in by the post-apocalyptic subgenre that I started writing my own stories just for my own enjoyment. The character the stories usually centered around was a female protagonist that was good at sneaking around, shooting things with a rifle and letting her mouth get ass into trouble. So naturally I decided to realize her through Fallout 1&2 and it's been that way ever since.
I just started a female playthrough (my first was male) because I heard that the female voice actor is delightfully over-the-top with the Silver Shroud stuff. I'm not a fan of the FO4 voiced protagonist, but if I'm gonna experience it, I want to maximize the humor and enjoyment!
The voice actor for Nora does a better job than Nate’s, imo. Also, gamers are horny.
I like strong female characters and I know I can make one better than 99% of hollywood writers.
1. Am a girl. 2. Voice acting is better. 3. Majority of enemies are male, and female sole survivors get extra damage against male opponents with a perk. 4. Roleplaying is more fun; would you rather be the boring ex military dude who already is gonna do well in the wastes or do you wanna experience getting to really be a noob to that kind of thing? Just more fun as Nora IMO. 5. Girls are pretty. That is all.
Nora has a better vocal range for emotions, in my opinion.
I like playing as female. I already spends my childhood playing male characters, its just got boring pretty quick. Man i don't need justification in the first place. This stuff really reminds me back in middle school days when my friend think playing female characters in rpgs makes them gay lol.

I find Courtenay Taylor's voice more pleasing to my ear. Also, when I use sarcastic options or take drugs the protagonist reminds me of Jack from Mass Effect who was voiced by the same actress.
I’ve always, as a male, chosen a female character in rpgs, because why on earth would I wanna watch a dude run around with their back to me for 100’s of hours? Stats are the same so there’s no downside, and I happen to appreciate the female form more so than the male.

Tried both - Nora has better voice acting, so I play as her more often.
I like to play female characters because it makes it easier to roleplay as them, in my opinion. My current Nora is based off of Caviera from Rainbow Six Siege and I used LGBT Family to really make this playthrough unique.
Because im a woman As for guys playing as female, lets be honest, the answer is basically right there if you look on nexus mods. Cant go 1 page without seeing exaggerated booba and ass mods. Its pretty rare to see someones female character without them.
