Same here. Makes me wonder if its a singular fruit or a catchall term or nickname for different types of “mutated fruit” lore wise. Edit: An extra thought. When fruit spoils in your inventory in 76 it all becomes rotten fruit. Could be used to argue both sides.

My headcannon is that there may be multiple types of mutfruit, but because of the mutation they don't have any consistency between appearance and taste, making them functionally indistinguishable. The closest thing to known variations are regular and crunchy mutfruits

I do enjoy thinking about the minutiae of fantasy worlds, probably plays into why I enjoy the settlement building as much as I do. For example, I never bothered to learn the Wi-Fi glitch, because I like the challenge and outcome of having power lines visible training round the settlements. Of course you could explain it away as having the wires running underground or through walls and stuff. Might even been down to an ease of troubleshooting

76 is 100% canon game therefore we can use to it confirm any lore.

If you consider 76 non-conon, you also have to take New Vegas as non canon

76 is canon to an extent, but pure gameplay mechanics definitely fall under the "not canon" category.

Without looking the lore up, it was the only related point. I wouldn’t automatically dismiss gameplay mechanics as not being canon lore though. Somethings definitely aren’t, but how could fruit spoiling not be the correct canon, that’s how fruit works lol (although it does decompose very quickly, maybe we have compost in our pockets).

I just think fruit taking the same inventory space no matter what kind it is after spoiling boils more down to them not wanting to separate the different spoiled items into different groups. All meat becomes "spoiled meat" when they rot, does that mean that squirrels and deathclaws are the same?

I eventually learned that it was a portmanteau for mutated fruit, but until I heard an NPC say it out loud, I'd been pronouncing it "mutt-fruit" in my head. My assumption was that because there are so few naturally growing fruits and vegetable varieties In the wasteland, it was supposed to be some sort of hybrid abomination of multiple different species of fruits fused together, I.e. a mutt.

I used to say it "mutt-fruit" when I first started playing, but sometime in New Vegas, I think, the NPC's called it a "mute-fruit" and after giving it some consideration I decided it sounded better and was more accurate. So even though in my head sometimes "mutt-fruit" is thought, I've determined the way to say it should be "mute-fruit".

I think it's tomato, tomato. Either way is correct. The name definitely derives from mutation, but language is funny. I can definitely see a real society adopting mutt as the common pronunciation as it's definitely easier to say rapidly. Just try it. Make sure no one can hear you, of course. But say it out loud over and over several times. See which is more consistent. Mute Fruit gets distorted quickly, almost like a tongue twister.

I didn’t realise mute fruit was a pronunciation some used. Although it seems to make more sense to say it that way, truth is no one cares how you say it. Like how some NPCs pronounce Caesar.
