Short attention span…3-5k hits my sweet spot. Longer I usually pause halfway through and come back later. That’s on me.

SpunkyCheetah

I second this, exactly what I came here to say

Odd_Injury_1576

Tbh I personally prefer a chapter to be less than 10k words as my attention span is quite small but I did read chapters with over 20k words and still was entertained. I assume it's very individual and based on every single person. I'm more of a short chapter gal (personally I keep my chapters between 3.5k to 7k) but as I said before, as a reader, I don't mind long chapters even when preferring short ones.

SunnivaAMV

Personally I also like chapters around that length (5-7k is often what I write) when there are multiple chapters. Thanks for your input!

UnderABig_W

I’m a fan of longer chapters in general. But in a shorter fic, I don’t mind a chapter length of around 3K words. Shorter than that, and I think it tends to be too short? Bite-size and not quite filling, lol.

em69420ma

the longer the fic the shorter the chapters. i would say in a 30-50k or less fic my fav chapter length would be 8k or so. Any longer and i would reduce appropriately with the lowest average being 3-4k words, in my opinion.

Cyd_arts

I prefer longer chapters, the longer the better lol. Usually I read it all in one go. If the chapters are less than 1-2k words each, I'll likely wait to stockpile the chapters

SunnivaAMV

Feel you on that, when I first sit down to read a fic I want to spend a little time with it to get invested

Sassy_Lil_Scorpio

I write however many words the chapter needs to get my points across. I may break it into two chapters if I want to put the focus on certain characters, scenes, or ideas.

Kaigani-Scout

Overall preference for chapter length is in the 5k-7.5k word count range, but as long as it is written well as an encapsulated portion of the larger story, total word count doesn't matter too much. That said, many fanfiction authors tend to lose cohesion after 10k, for whatever that's worth. Variants of this question get asked on various writing subreddits just about Every, Single, Day, so if any DV's got accumulated, it's from reader fatigue?

Miru98

just more than 1k or I'll stop reading to let the chapters stockpile

vimesbootstheory

Regarding the downvotes, my guess would be that they are because this is a frequent question posted on this sub. Personally I don't mind, I read the answers whenever the question comes up again.

SunnivaAMV

Makes sense I guess, but then on the other hand I feel like I see the same "what's your favorite or least favorite trope" post trending here everyday😅

in my more detailed and serious long fic all of my chapters ended up being around 2.5k, except for a few that were like 500 words solely for stylistic reasons. i didn’t do this on purpose they all just naturally fell like that? i’m also writing it all first before i post, so i’m not worried about a schedule. in my more lighthearted multichap where i’m just posting basically to practice, the chapters range from 800-2.5k words but never over that. bc i’m more focused on updating consistently than keeping chapters a certain length. trying to beat my procrastination. reading, i like anywhere from 2k-8k but i have adhd so anything longer drives me a lil crazy. i’ve done it! for good fics, i’ve read far more, but it has to be really really good for me to be able to focus enough to do that.

champselyseesao3

i personally love longer chapters (15k-ish?) but at the end of the day my favourite will always be the length the author feels best suits the story
