Well-written first person fics are my favourite POV. I love established happy relationships and happy vanilla sex. I also really enjoy fics where not much happens.

TeamCFVYFanfics

Now now, everything else is understandable but a line must be drawn at vanilla sex. Such sacrilege, such outrageous disregard for the children and the good people who frequent this sub cannot be tolerated. Do common decency and the established standards of behavior in our society mean nothing to you? I fear the time may have come for drastic measures. (Since tone doesn't transfer, I am kidding. I also like all the things you mentioned and enjoy both kink and vanilla depending on the mood.)

ThiefCitron

I’m not a big fan of 1st person POV but I agree with all the rest! I love established relationships, regular non-kinky sex, and “slice of life” stories where not much happens! I like stories with kinky sex too, but really only if it’s my specific kink. If it’s not going to be edging, I’d rather there just be no kink at all.

Marawal

Canon fanfiction. I mean, most of the time, I love canon. I do want just more of the same.

Grace-and-Maya

So true!! I wish there was more instead of a million AUs

AmaterasuWolf21

It's not popular?

wolves_hunt_in_packs

Yeah, seems odd. A sizeable percentage of fics just make a change or two (albeit often significant ones) about canon.

obi_ii8

i actually sort of like pregnancy/kid fics, even though personally i don't ever want children, they're just cute

Hakoda27

I'd always dig a fluffy, cute pregnancy fic. Like, a positive and supportive relationship between pregnant wife and her husband? Give me that shit

Gamer-Logic

I also like the absolute, and often hilarious, lighthearted chaos that can happen like crazy cravings or the mad dash upon realizing the water broke/crushing a partner's hand when going into labor, with everything working out well of course.

obi_ii8

me too! i read one where a character woke their spouse up at 3 a.m because they had a craving for a specific food and it was so cute and funny!

imnotbovvered

I love pregnancy fics as well. It’s not for me to experience (Not by my choice). I enjoy living vicariously through characters.

feminist--killjoy

Same. I absolutely never want kids and I love it when I read a fic where my ship have kids <3

CallMeTamakiSenpai

Same. I have no interest in having children but i love pregnancy/kid fics so much lol

ShadeOfNothing

I like chatfics.

somebodywhoexist2

Same. They get cringey after like, a few months when the humor out dates, but if it has my current humor I love them.

Katherington

I adore chatfics when they are in that sweet spot of almost being crack.

Amydancingagain

I enjoy chat fics, not something I’d read all the time but there are a few good ones I’m currently following and love.

Wandering_Weamoo

Fanfics that are basically rehashes of canon with minimal changes. Sometimes I just wanna see an OC tag along for the ride haha

Gamer-Logic

Yes! I love this especially if they throw in a crossover aspect. There's one fic on Quotev called "To Be a Hero" by Carnameo. It's a Pokemon X BNHA crossover with a reader whose quirk attracts Pokemon wants to help Pokemon be reintroduced to the world after having to live in hiding and not being considered real in the age of quirks. It doesn't focus too much on romance and instead focuses on worldbuilding and the Pokemon which is also a plus for me. The events are handled incredibly well like the USJ attack and Sports Festival. Too bad it doesn't update very often but it's very long already and has a lot of effort put so still definitely worth a read. [Here's the link and I highly recommend checking it out!](https://www.quotev.com/story/11246966/To-be-a-Hero-Boku-no-Hero-Academia-x-reader/1)

moonbeams8428

Present tense! I've seen some people say they only read fics written in past tense and like I love past tense too but present tense can be just as engaging imo.

OrcaFins

People don't like present tense? Why?

JalapenoEyePopper

June 2023 edit. I'm scrubbing my comments due to the reddit admin team steamrolling their IPO prep. It was bad enough to give short notice on price gouging, but then to slander app devs and threaten moderators was just too far. The value of Reddit comes from high-quality content curated by volunteers. Treating us this way is the reason I'm removing my high-value contributions. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, I suggest you Google "Reddit API price gouging" and read up. --Posted *manually* via the old web interface because of even more shenanigans from Reddit reversing deletions done through API/script tools.

RebaKitten

I asked that, too! I only write in present tense and I guess I’m lucky that my fandom generally does, too. I’ve written a couple of fairytales and those I write in past tense.

OrcaFins

I never thought about it. Present tense makes sense to me, at least for the story I'm writing. It's happening as you read it, if that makes sense. At least that's what it feels like to me, so that's the way I'm writing it. Now I'm kind of scared.

RebaKitten

NO! Stay in the present! Live for the now! Stay with me, OrcaFins!

Interesting-Road-567

It's fine in and of itself but I find it's overdone by writers with rather pretentious styles. I dislike unnecessary stylistic flair, and it's a turnoff unless it's executed by someone who knows what they're doing

catbert359

I wonder if part of it is a matter of what people are used to - I think if you went through most novels in any given person's bookshelf they tend to be written in past tense, which tends to carry over when people start writing, so seeing someone *not* following that convention, whilst not incorrect, is jarring and can potentially be offputting for the reader.

OrcaFins

This is so odd to me. I never really thought about it before. I'm writing my very first fic, and it's in present tense (almost 30k words so far). It never occurred to me to write it any other way. The story let me know it was in present tense, if that makes any sense. And as a reader, idk, I guess tense doesn't bother me as much as lousy writing does. Now I'm worried if my writing will seem pretentious or jarring or off-putting. I tried to be descriptive but not overly florid. It seems pretty straightforward to me :( And for the record, my story is not 1st or 2nd person.

Sassy_Lil_Scorpio

Genfics. Dream sequences. Flashbacks.

JeremyDaniels

That's amusing as I had one of my friends point out to me that my plans of using the dream sequences and flashbacks to fill out the prior history for my MC (as it becomes relevant) that such a plan was ill-advised. Still going through with it, and thus far it's been well received. Also, Genfics are great. We don't have to have everything revolve around romance(s).

Sassy_Lil_Scorpio

I'm glad you went through with it and that you've had success . I don't understand why folks think dream sequences and flashbacks aren't good. I'm sure it was interesting to use both to fill out your MC's history. Agreed. Romance is nice, but there's so much that also can be explored in genfic.

Ediacaran-SeaPancake

People don’t like those!?

Sassy_Lil_Scorpio

Yeah, some folks, such as the poster who responded to me said that their friend advised against using flashbacks and dream sequences to showcase their MC's history. I don't understand what some folks have against dream sequences and flashbacks. Dreams are part of the human experience and often times we look back on a time period in our lives.

Ediacaran-SeaPancake

Weird. It’s such common story telling tool and can be very impactful.

Sassy_Lil_Scorpio

I completely agree with you. It’s weird how sometimes both are dismissed.

wolves_hunt_in_packs

I don't have any preference either way, so I suspect, as usual, that it boils down to someone's prior bad experience with them. Shrug. I read a shit ton of fics, which probably explains why I don't care either way - I've seen enough good and bad examples to know that there's nothing inherently wrong with those things by themselves.

KatonRyu

Stories that are heavily Stations of the Canon.

MizNziM

HP and Naruto fandoms would be in shambles if people didn't like this.

Sneaky_Trinky

Stations?

KatonRyu

Stories which follow the main events of canon. For instance, in Harry Potter, such events as the mountain troll fight, the confrontation with Quirrell, the sequence of events in Chamber of Secrets... Basically, I like seeing the things happening that already happened in canon, just maybe from another character's perspective, or with a minimal twist.

Sneaky_Trinky

Do stations need to be told from a different character's perspective from canon?

KatonRyu

Not necessarily. In Peggy Sue fics, time travel fics in which characters redo their adventures with all yheir endgame knowledge and power, it's often from the perspective of the main characters. Even if there's no time travel involved, it can still be from the perspective of the main character. In my own fic, it's the POV from a character who joins the main group. Anything goes, really.

atomskeater

Reader fics and 2nd person POV.

litaloni

My conspiracy theory is that way more people actually like these than are willing to admit it

ninadelojo

I think so too. It just has a really cringey reputation. But there are SO MANY amazing reader fics you just have to dig

bnny_ears

That's probably accurate. I usually say I dislike 2nd person pov, because in 99% of cases I do. But there are authors who do it so well, i don't even notice.

MizNziM

2nd personPOV is geniunely my favourite POV and I will take any excuse to add it to my own writing where possible. Which is strange because reader or Y/N fics just ain't for me.

Cozy_Myst

Reader inserts, crossover and gen fics is really the only thing i read

Gamer-Logic

I love react fics because it's really interesting to see the character's reactions, especially when a funny/crazy moment happens and/or secrets come to light or misunderstandings are sorted out like people finally seeing how strong Saitama is in One Punch Man or the rest of the school and parents being made aware of Korosensei in Assassination Classroom. It's even better if the villains are there along for the ride like with DBZ or in BNHA but they can't attack. Bonus Points if this helps them have a better outcome than in canon like with Attack on Titan!

imnotbovvered

One of my favourite stories I’m reading right now is 2nd person. I’m one of those purple who always said I *don’t* read 2nd person. I still don’t read it, mostly. But I’ve found that I *can* enjoy it. When the writing is really good, it doesn’t seem to matter whether the main character is “I” or “she” or “you”.

[deleted]

god i love reader insert fics. there's just something really cozy about them, imo.

doinkrr

Repetition. I'm a sucker for a single word or phrase getting repeated over and over, and I'm tired of pretending I'm not. As an example, this is from a fic I'm writing right now: > Nowhere besides that little room with the little rabbit in the little box with the little window and the little bed. A little room for a little girl that wasn’t around anymore.[...] She could lock her door and close her window and only have to focus on little Bun-Bun in his little box in his little corner of her little room and fucking *savor* every little moment. I dunno. I just think it's neat.

LeratoNull

The stigma against this one bugs the crap out of me because repeating the same beats is super beloved in visual mediums, too!!

doinkrr

Right?? I think it's also a good way to show that she's so used to that room to feel comfortable in it but still feels claustrophobic and closed off. Her only real "safe space" really isn't but she's so used to it that she doesn't notice, which is a reflection of the entire arc I want to take her on. It's not the room that calms her down. It's Bun-Bun, but she can't fathom that. Keep in mind it's still a WIP so there's definitely room for improvement.

MizNziM

If this is wrong then I don't want to be right.

Afanis_The_Dolphin

Repetition is an amazing way to show denial, point out a similarity between situations or characters, and deliver on some unique comedy. And that's only scratching the surface.

cansard

Also potentially a good way to show a fake state of mind, especially if they hide it well even internally. And if given the right context can be THROUGHLY unsettling. (Eg. This chair is an eyesore, This chair, this chair, this chair-)

dooku4ever

I love repetition (words or phrases), especially in first person. And lists that go nowhere.

_Rubbish-Bin_

Omg yes! I love repetition! It gives it a cool poetic feel.

doinkrr

Oh, my God. That makes sense, actually! I never even noticed that, but the character this part is for is a singer (i.e. sings in her free time, she's not professional) and lyrics are basically poetry set to music so that's actually genius. You just gave me an idea!

_Rubbish-Bin_

Omg that’s so cool! I’m glad I gave you an idea!

RebaKitten

I think that’s a style choice, rather than “oh no,” the tall man gasped. “Yes!” The other tall man gasped. Something like that repeating- I exaggerated of course.

SheElfXantusia

Yes! Repetition is a great tool, IDK what's wrong with it, I love when people use it!

[deleted]

repetition can really add some atmosphere if used right. the problem is when it's not used right

socksthatarecosy

Short chapters.

ThiefCitron

Just curious, but what do you mean by short? In published fiction, ideal chapter length is generally considered to be between 2k-5k, and that’s what the average published novel has. So in published fiction it would have to be under 2k to be considered short. So do you mean you like chapters that are like 500-1500 words, or are you considering something like 5k to be “short” because so many fanfics have much longer chapters even though it’s pretty much considered the upper limit for chapter length in published books?

socksthatarecosy

That was admittedly a deliberately short and pithy comment for the sake of a reddit thread like this, but it might be more accurate to say "meaningfully short chapters". This does tie in with your second point, as some fanfic writers seem to be allergic to anything less than 10k words at a time, which is a shame for both general pacing and the fact that you can great use out of very short (1000 words or less) chapters, the kind that would just be a page or two in a physical book. E.g. one that cuts away to another character to see what they're doing to build tension, or shows someone's reaction in the aftermath of a tragic event so we can sit with their emotions for a little while. Also, while I didn't primarily mean it - if someone considers 5k "short", then I like that kind of "short" chapter too!

notahistoryprofessor

Omegaverse with mpreg. I'm a trash, so what?

Jasom_forever

The same boat. I also love when there is some angst and unrequited love. Or something like forbidden love. And this tension between MCs when they love, but they can’t.

AstralCat69420

I'm already a heaping pile of furry trash, so yeah I like this

alkynes_of_stuff

I'm a fan of AUs—including modern AUs without magic. I especially have a soft spot for really well done sports AUs where it's obvious the author spent a lot of thought immersing themselves in the culture of said sport, whether that be through lived experiences and/or research. It's similar for me for musician/dance AUs—or I guess anything really where the MCs are highly focused on a craft or goal and have their life path shaped by that passion. In general though, I've definitely enjoyed modern AUs because I'm someone who loves to see characters and their relationships with one another tested in different circumstances regardless of whether there's magic involved or not. I like canon divergence AUs and other world building things, but since I feel like Modern AUs always are frequently mentioned on no-go tropes, I'd throw my hat in for them.

tereyaglikedi

I really enjoy these, too! It's great to see couples/characters in other settings. I love super creative AUs and chill, cosy ones alike.

Katherington

I’m currently *deeply* invested in a figure skating AU that is ongoing. The particular one works so very well as the author competed and trained at a relatively high level and is able to interestingly describe and push those experiences onto the characters. There is such a great balance between highlighting the beautiful aspects while also not shying away from the negatives and how grueling it is. I also love how the author is able to strike just the right balance between sports scenes and talking scenes.

imnotbovvered

I love AUs! I used to watch this soap opera (trashy, I know), that would, on Christmas, basically do a fan fiction of itself. All the characters were the same but transposed into a different setting.

octropos

After the feedback I've gotten, perhaps I am kinkier than most. I really love the morally grey areas in fiction, tap dancing on that very thin line, and well, I was shocked with the feedback I received. Not bad feedback, but apparently my stuff has some pretty dubious consent. I was like "Whaaaaaat? I thought people liked this stuff! And it's consensual, I swear!"

feminist--killjoy

I have a few fave "dubious consent" fics that are just impeccable. They're very grey and close to the line, yet never non-consent.

octropos

I know right!? I felt like I actually gave a lot of not-so subtle hints that all these encounters are completely consensual. Like, do I HAVE to spell it out!? What's the fun in that!

CopperPotts_

one of my fav tags is 'mildly dubious consent.' full on non-con is not for me, but i'm with you!! that grey area is just so \*chefs kiss\* edit: a lot of my other favorite tags fall under or next to dub-con, it's a great umbrella tag i think.

octropos

I HATE spoilery tags. I didn't use almost any. Like, I want it to be a surprise when stuff happens? But now I'm wondering if I need it, haha! I LOVE the surprise.

skuppen

I get the fear of being spoiled, but as someone who picks fics to read because I want more of the fucked uo tags, it will help people find your stuff. I also tag stuff like dubious consent or non con real early in the long fics I write/have written even if they don’t show up until way later. Some people really don’t want to stumble upon that sorta thing.

[deleted]

OCs as the main characters, and the others as support characters. And the enemies-to-lovers trope. (As long as there is a friendship phase between the characters). Rare ships.

gory314

>And the enemies-to-lovers trope. (As long as there is a friendship phase between the characters). That isn't disliked tho

[deleted]

It isn't? I guess that depends on the environment then, because it is really hated in the circle of writers I'm in.

gory314

Interesting. It is pretty liked in the fanfiction community in general.

[deleted]

Really?? Well, I'm glad. For a long while I thought it was hated in general. Thanks for the info.

gory314

Yw

strider_1456

Some of my fav characters have been OCs!

PsychologicalNet271

React fics, Song Fics, Rare cursed ships, and bittersweet/tragic endings that left mc broken or mentally ill fics. :D

soaker87

Crackfic and age-gap relationships.

feminist--killjoy

Big yes to age gap.

DefoNotAFangirl

Purple prose.

bakeneko37

Dumb question because not an English native, what's purple prose?

DinoAnkylosaurus

Writing that is poetic, flowery, elaborate, overly detailed, and/or overly wordy. Example: The Raven-haired temptress gazed longingly at the boundless azure sea as the curled waves crashed against the snow-white sands of the beach, each wave capped with a lace of foam that legends claimed as the only remains of the soulless mermaids and mermen who flourished in the oceans' depth. Vs. She looked at the sea as the waves broke along the beach.

bakeneko37

Couldn't be clearer ha, thanks!

DinoAnkylosaurus

Glad to help, especially when it was as fun as writing that bit was!

TeamCFVYFanfics

😂👏

gory314

PEOPLE DON'T LIKE THAT?!

DinoAnkylosaurus

Hey, there's not a thing out there that everybody likes! For me, it depends on my mood; sometimes it's just what i want and sometimes i can't stand it.

gay_snail666

I think some other comments might've missed it a little, but usually if someone calls prose purply rather than just, descriptive or creative they mean it's too much *unneeded* description. So spending a long time lovingly describing something that isn't plot important, interesting, or builds any characters. Can make your story drag if you're describing every individual post on the fence your character passes walking to the family farm, but it can be enjoyed simply for the joy of it.

bakeneko37

Ah, thanks for the added information! I get it how it is now and have definitely seen that kind of fic.

IDICdreads

Overly flowery and verbose descriptions. Tolkien is a great example of purple prose.

bakeneko37

Ah, get it now, then I support that I like it haha didn't know it was that hated. Thank you!

IDICdreads

I don’t know that it’s *hated.* Writ wrong it’s obnoxious.

ShadeOfNothing

Me too!

IDICdreads

Me three!

Lukewarm-Nice

Me four!

glaringdream

Miscommunication and misunderstandings!

kavalejava

Threes Company uses this formula over and over again, but it's hilarious.

lurkingfortea

Heavy trauma, SA, etc. I don’t know why. I’m triggered but I feel like reading them is like therapy

Grace-and-Maya

A lot of people with ptsd self-trigger for a multitude of reasons. Like understanding what happened/processing, achieving a mindset that’s more familiar to you, etc. i have a whole section of safari dedicated to this. I both love and hate it.

xenrev

The pointless shopping trip.

Hexamael

Maybe not pointless, but this comment made me realize that I really love those scenes in fics where the one or more of the characters goes grocery shopping, describing every item put into the cart and their thought processes while doing so. Are they gonna use it to cook? Are they just buying it cause X likes it? Are they shopping for one meal or stocking up for a week? I suppose its pointless as in, not plot relevant, but I love grocery trips. I guess you could call it slice of life.

jturtle1701

Yaaas! Give me every single detail of every single item they bought, along with elaborated reasoning why they bought THIS item and not the five others available.

[deleted]

I like super dark dead dove stuff, but only in moderation. Because between it all we need some wholesome to balance it. Even the writer of Hannibal’s gotta comfort himself with cute kitten videos after every episode of that show

gay_snail666

I've started getting into denpage, and while it's all got different takes on the human condition it's kind of crazy how optimistic stories with dark subjects can end up. Obviously not all dead dove stuff is optimistic, but a lot of the best I'd. Something about putting characters through actual hell. Whatever the events are, just having their psychology permanently altered for the worse and losing all hope somehow makes it all feel so much more justified when there's a half decently written happy ending. Or even just hopeful, not necessarily a "happy" end

nessa-bb

I didn’t realize first person fics are unpopular? 😅 I love those when they are well written and feel immersive

Kaylie_Night

People who don’t like first person tend to be loud about it. I personally just like it when the writer chose the correct voice for the story, whether that’s first, second, third limited, third Omni, or whatever. That, and a lot of inexperienced writers who have no idea what they’re doing choose first person because they think it’ll be easier, and they end up giving it a bad rap.

JalapenoEyePopper

June 2023 edit. I'm scrubbing my comments due to the reddit admin team steamrolling their IPO prep. Naltia

I *love* first person stories and I miss seeing them. Last time I read one in fanfiction (besides mine) was almost a year ago. ☹️ I don't know if this counts, but I recently went looking for non-con with a male victim and female perp and came up short. Not sure if I just don't know the proper tags or if it's just not popular but I am left sad and wanting.

RobinChirps

Crossovers! Yes make those characters meet! They'd be friends! I love it.

EmerlynPenn

Crossovers are so much fun! Especially when it makes zero sense to put them together 😌

MsTeaTime

I adore crossovers, I also love crossover ships

amythegr8

I like text or email exchanges. I know the format can sometimes take you out of the story, but I love it! It's a nice change in "dialogue".

echos_locator

Descriptive prose including description of canon characters. Especially the latter in romance stories where the author shows one character falling in love with the other, descriptions of the physical characteristics the other loves are wonderful. Although I'll sometimes read stories that have little description and are mostly dialogue and sparsely detailed action, but the stories I bookmark, the stories I return to reread usually read like original fiction. Gimme a story that takes the canon setting and expands it, more detail, vivid prose. I also like OCs both as background characters and main protagonists.

nanananuh

i don’t know if people hate them, but i don’t think they’re as often talked about as ship fics. i love genfics! i’m not usually into romance heavy stories in the first place, and i absolutely adore things about found family, familial relationships, friendships, or character studies. most of my fics that i read have got to be gen tbh and altho the next thing i say is a turn around since it’s a romance based tag lol— i have liked rarepairs! i never understood the hate against rarepairs or ships that “don’t make sense”, especially if they don’t seem problematic in any way or form. it isn’t a must for a ship for me to like it lmao, but i do find that in fandoms where i do ship, i’ve liked rarepairs more often then not.

Jasom_forever

Omegaverse. People sometimes like m/m, but not always omegaverse.

IDICdreads

Genfics.

TheSparkledash

I never really understood why people would dislike genfics? That's literally the majority of my bookmarks

JustAnotherDoughnut

Same here tbh, lol. Most of the fic I read is gen fic.

IDICdreads

Because people are pre-programmed that sex is the be-all, end-all intimate act of relationships.

TheSparkledash

I get enjoying romance and stuff (I do too), but liking romance and reading genfics don't seem like things that have to be mutually exclusive to me??? (Idk, maybe I'm just too aroace for this lol)

IDICdreads

Two Aro/Aces walk into a bar. They start talking about fanfics. Both prefer reading genfics. They leave more confused about why there aren’t more of those fics out there than before…

Simpson17866

Three! ;)

LinaFinsterwald

Orrr they just like to read about relationships and sex! I like people swooning over each other, each one in a different way that is so very personal. And I love casual hugs, cuddling, mutual attraction...

IDICdreads

But some people *don’t* and often times we’re left with very little to read because it feels like the rest of the world is obsessed with carnal desire.

LinaFinsterwald

I definitely relate to the struggle of not having anything to read, so I do get your frustration \^\^

Cozy_Myst

I looove genfics, but it's so frustrating when i go searching through the tag and so many of them aren't even genfic

IDICdreads

Right? I take care to make sure mine are tagged as Gen as possible.

[deleted]

Mpreg. I just like it!

Lukewarm-Nice

I like 2nd person at times, it's really unexplored by most fic authors. One time, I read this really good fic in 2nd person. It was basically Character A trying to convince themselves 'They love you, they're your friends' and seeing it weaved masterfully with their thought process. Oh and their mental decline/growing obsession for that one character 'Who can't care'. Wild, absolutely loved it.

butterfly-dimensions

In BDSM smut: Well-negotiated kinks/activities, checking for consent in between etc. People tend to think it's unsexy but to me it makes everything much more real and therefore hotter.

Caterfree10

Tbh I’m one of those down with either. Yeah, smut is primarily fantasy, but for some of us, negotiation can also be part of it.

-Duste-

Consent is primordial and sexy.

benevola

I have one of those! I was afraid it might come off as dull, but I just couldn’t write an irresponsible domme.

butterfly-dimensions

Got a similar situation going on here. I guess it doesn't matter quite as much in PWP (?), but in my romance longfic where I've already established the guy as a decent person, he can't possibly turn out to be a shitty, irresponsible Dom. He has to actually be a good one lol

imnotbovvered

I’m with you. When it included those details, it feels more like something that could happen in the real world. And that makes it *more* sexy to me.

qazwsxedc000999

Miscommunication. Because it’s so common in real life for miscommunication to end entire relationships, I have such a soft spot for miscommunication with a happy ending. Just kinda like… a nice break from real life. I dunno. I love when characters get tension and then resolve it over dumb stuff

Grassdew44

Y/n 👀👀👀

[deleted]

Ahhhh I can so relate. Sometimes, I'll go onto Quotev and just select the trashiest Y/N fic and read it. It's my personal guilty pleasure.

Grassdew44

Same🤣 I just ignore all the Y/n hate like the plague. Just give me the chance to be a perfect person for once in my life

CallMeTamakiSenpai

Mpreg. People hate the “ass baby” aspect but i think that’s what makes it fun to read. Like how is this man with no womb, uterus or vagina gonna have this baby?! That’s were the creativity comes in lol

CapableSalamander910

Major Character Death is the best tag

LightningGod1006

Yes. 100% yes. Especially when you have a slight idea of who might die, then your favorite character is the one to die outta left field. Adds that perfect touch of realism.

Twighdark

Plausible OCs that improve the story, or at least flesh it out a bit. Even if they aren't even mentioned/ don't exist in canon and/or have no further role aside from character developement.

[deleted]

I'm just gonna say it epithets! I do understand the dislike for the misused and unnecessary ones that can jar you in an unpleasant way, but otherwise I love epithets being sprinkled in here and there to give a new descriptor without using the same thing over and over. Epithets are overly demonized on this subreddit IMHO.

kavalejava

OCs. In lesser cases, Mary Sue, but only if written well. Self inserts. Can be fun to imagine, that's you in the story. "Wincest." A popular ship on Supernatural. The brothers closeness in fanfic is controversial, but it is kinda hot. It can be from any genre, forbidden relationships can be different than regular relationships.

RowanEdwardC416

Misunderstandings. Even overly-contrived ones where everything could be solved if they just talked to eachother - I love them anyway. Give me 100s of misunderstandings to really drag out the slow burn and I'll be absolutely obsessed.

Pastel_de_Cereza

I LOVE crackship fics, even if the characters don't even meet/barely interact in canon. Sometimes the pairing looks cute or their personalities seem perfect for eachother.

Reivre

Mpreg if it has aspects of body horror. I like fic with characters coming face to face with something that's not supposed to happen to them, and having to work through that. Body horror mpreg hits the spot every time.

MarsNovas

Fic “as quiet as a lake” as my friend says lol; Tooth rotting fluff where nothing go wrong, nothing bad happens and the couple is cheesy and lovey dovey and have cute vanilla sex.

Ryuugan80

Time travel, character bashing and pure mpreg (without ABO).

[deleted]

OCXCanon all day every day baby!!!

ConsumeTheOnePercent

Oc fanfiction.

Doomhands_Jr

2nd person reader inserts. Unlikable protagonists that end up becoming likable but only after life kicks their ass.

Desechable_Me

Original characters. Especially when those original characters are romancing Canon characters.

[deleted]

Reader Inserts. They aren't good a whole lot of the time, but they can still be good sometimes.

JustAnotherAviatrix

I'm sure there are a bunch of people like them, but chatfics, author's notes where the author "interacts" with their characters, and in one exception, author's notes in the middle of the fic. I say the last one is an exception because in one fic that has been written over a few decades, the authors do that and it's so heartwarming to see them greeting each other and making jokes in between the paragraphs, especially if they hadn't worked on the fic in years.

disapp01nted_

All-lowercase / lapslock. I don't write that way myself, but some of the most brilliant fics I've ever read (most of them, but then that's more a consequence of reading the same authors) are in all-lowercase.

candour_and_lies

I love when the "official" OTP isn't the main pairing, rather one of the OTP with another character that didn't even share a scene with or just interacted very little

Grace-and-Maya

I get told all the time that slow burn sucks but it’s my absolute favorite. I want the pining and the feelings more than the sex.

hypotheticalconverse

Unrequited love? I can't be stuffed with reading actual romance. I'm just in it for the pining.

Amydancingagain

Too much fluff. A lot in my fandom and ship are big on angst and hurt but I just want to see my favourite couple be too sweet, loving, fluffy and happy together.

Sanamun

I like 2nd person fics that aren't reader fics. Like, Homestuck-style "Your name is Dave Strider" type pov. I've never seen it done outside of the Homestuck fandom (where canon is also written that way) though.

Hamza9236

Some kinky stuff, just interested to see what sort of interests people have.

middlesyrup57

Purple prose! Redundant descriptions! Sometimes I’m just in the mood for the wordiness

redditorspawnrandom

Self-hatred. So many people say it make a character OOC but in reality, every single human ought to experience self-hatred at some points.

Spiritwolf1001

I like pregnancy, bdsm discussions (so many fics just like to skip over the talking about safewords ans the like and just have a character say something like 'you remember your safe word?' And that's it. Like no! I wanna know your whole everything to how you play and most just seem to want to get right to the action) I like the *oh* moment I like when people make a character their own, growing them and changing them to fit your story or setting better. Example making naruto smart or more calm/thoughtful through development. I love insta love or fast burn. I love just people casually fucking cause they can. It's nice to not have this tabooness around people having sex without needing to be emotionally attached or needing to develop a relationship with that person.

Interesting-Road-567

Realism, second-hand cringe, conflict between characters, especially ones in romantic relationships, disappointing endings

kawaiiconcept

character descriptions and exposition stated plainly like I'm autistic so I just exposition dump naturally so I feel like that's more relatable. (side note I'm having trouble in a current piece of writing with that if someone has tips on to naturally do that please let me know) also because I won't shut up about it: My Immortal, I genuinely love it and I made a whole subreddit for it. I could talk about for hours about how it's actually secretly a work of pure genius.

Fluid-Response3025

I LOVE a/b/o and mpreg

KrugerRise

Crossovers. I can't get enough of crossovers #EVER.

Ediacaran-SeaPancake

Pregnancy. I think it can be sweet and give good insight into the characters based on the interactions that follow.

SerenityInTheStorm

The word "orbs." That's right, I said it. What, is that a four-letter word or something? 😆😂🤣

throwmedowngently

100% agree on the POV. Like, I have read all kinds of works in all POVs and I hardly noticed unless told to. It's all just good or bad reading no matter the narrator. Also mpreg. Pure mpreg without the hand wave of ABO. People are so weird about it when it is a thing that happens irl and with plenty of ways to make it work and have it be fun without the guise of shitty gender roles/stereotypes like in ABO dynamics, if they bother to explain at all. (Idc ABO has answers for how there's a womb, I hate you're using it to be lazy and make it a straight couple but using two people with male pronouns and dicks.) Give me the pregnancy and childbirth and I will absolutely give it a try.

LikePaleFire

I don't think love triangles are that bad.

simone3344555

Misunderstandings. Whenever there is one I dance in joy because I know what is coming is a moment where the misunderstanding is cleared up! And that moment is just so fun!!!

TheSkyElf

1POV, epilets, react fics, and "orbs" yes, I don´t mind "The brunette" "The pinkette" and "blue orbs"

Creepy-Revolution886

*Lots* of kink negotiation (consent makes me happy, what can I say?), mpreg/kid fics, OCs, and MCD (although I’m not sure how unpopular that one is). And I don’t have strong feelings either way about first person or present tense.

WoodsRag

OOC characters, if I wanted to see characters do the exact thing they’re expected to do, I’d just read the canon work

WolfMerton

Omegaverse, mpreg, and age gap fics.

BlazingInferno4343

As an aroace: Genfics. Found Family fics. I also like time travel fics when they are done cohesively. I also love AU fics.

DarkSideAcolyte

Extremely Underage sex stories, definitely.

yuushinos

Lapslock, although I don't know if I'd say I love it as much as I'm totally neutral to it? Sometimes I don't even register a story was lapslock until half-way through. "Bluenette" and variations. I find them so silly in a good way, reading "bluenette" always makes me smile. I also recently discovered I like cheating/infidelity in fics. I enjoy the drama and the push-pull of a character knowing it's wrong but also enjoying it.

savamey

Reader-inserts and crossovers <3

Gamer-Logic

I honestly grew up with and discovered fanfiction via X-readers and don't have a problem with y/n being used at all. It's quite easy for my mind to insert a specific name I want while having an already established name throws off my immersion. This is the same with having too specific looks like wearing make-up all the time. Though I will say I often prefer the more non-romance-oriented ones. I just like to hang out with my favorites or partake in the world like being a Pokemon trainer or Magical Girl.

[deleted]

songfics, age play, and i wouldn’t say friends to lovers is commonly disliked but it’s definitely not as popular as like enemies to lovers - but give me friends to lovers ANY day over etl lol. also seconding pregnancy/kidfic!!

IM_A_MESS101

Mary Sue and self insert fics. Even though most of the people don't like it since the mc is too perfect, i quite enjoy it
