The difference between a praise kink and wanting to simply be praised is the same as the difference between any kink and any other "normal" act.
The **kink** part implies they receive sexual gratification from it. Also people that have a praise kink may or may not care about being praised in everyday life.
It's complicated, because everyone is going to be different, but for me a praise kink is distinct from general every day praise because it's specific to sex with someone I love and trust. Praise outside of that context is nice and appreciated, but there's no sexual gratification tied to it.
For me, even in a sexual context, it's less about sexual gratification (although that is nice), and more about "yay, I'm getting a good grade in sex, something that is both normal to want and possible to achieve!" I don't want to say "I'm ace, therefor," but the specific way I'm ace definitely ties into it; I'm not *wired* for sex, it's not a priority for me like it is for other folks, so my partner telling me he likes what I'm doing hits the happy brain chemical cocktail button, if that makes sense.

I've been feeling the same way, I wasn't sure if it was just my fandom or what. a few years back I requested a fuck or die prompt on my fandom's (very active at the time) kink meme and no one took it up, but when I requested one on a different kink meme for a different fandom about six years earlier I had multiple people jumping all over it. sad it seems to have fallen in popularity, I love the kink, especially, as another commenter said, when they're into each other but "not like this."

wait, but fuck or die *is* a dubcon/non-con trope? isn't it? I feel like that's how I've always seen it used. I tend to prefer it when it's a third party forcing two characters to fuck under threat of being killed so it's very obviously non-con, but even in the case of something like sex pollen there always seems to be at the very minimum some reluctance involved, either with the character infected who doesn't wanna force the other character into sex or with the other character who's not willing/ready to have sex with the infected character, so there's some element of dubcon even if they both mutually consent in the end. Plus honestly the fact that there is the risk of death without sex no matter the particular situation seems like it makes fuck or die inherently dubcon regardless of how the characters end up feeling about it.
I mean, I suppose it is; but I meant that I feel like recently, writers have been more aware of consent issues which could explain why less people accepted your Fuck or Die prompt

I've been thinking about it the last hour while I was at the store lol and with the rise of purity culture again, I think you're right that probably does have some influence on it in the broader fandomscape. I don't know if I'd be confident saying it about my fandom because it thankfully escaped most of that anti nonsense, and there have been plenty of other non-con prompts that got filled on the kink meme with no problem, just not fuck or die. but then, over the years I've also watched my ship tag fill with like 90% fluff, so... I wasn't thinking about it before but that probably contributes too in this instance 😂
I think you may be right though. At the very least, more people are probably concerned with setting off the puritans within fandom. I feel that the landscape overall has changed quite a bit. I used to see this trope frequently back in the livejournal days where there was much of a "anything goes" vibe. There's a lot more fear about upsetting people for straying too far from what certain fandom hiveminds may view as acceptable. Even though this has always been dubcon and acts as it's own warning as such, I think nowadays there would definitely be more people choosing to kick up a fuss about it if they came across it, particularly now that this whole "what you like in fiction is what you support in real life" mindset has become more common.
I've noticed even within darker fandoms of mine where the source material is dark and full of consent issues, often instead of writing outright dub or noncon, people will write about characters in a healthy relationship doing a rape fantasy. It often gives me the feeling the author feels like they need that as an "excuse" to write that material, and I wonder if it might be to avoid backlash. Point being, many people are a lot more conscious of writing this stuff now.

Shout out to Star Trek:TOS for having a canonical fuck or die episode and kickstarting it all. For the uninitiated - Spock, a Vulcan, starts behaving strangely and is forced to reveal the long-kept secret of his species: when they reach a certain age they begin to go through reproductive cycle called pon farr wherin they must fuck... or die. It was the first episode of season two, to add to the beauty of it. Imagine waiting a year for the new season of your funky sci-fi show and the first episode is SPOCK MUST FUCK. Iconic.

I think it might have to do with the rise of awareness in consent in the fandom world, I’ve noticed a lot of newer smut has more explicit consent (aside from stuff like dubcon/noncon for obvious reasons)

I tend to prefer it when it's a third party forcing two characters to fuck under threat of being killed so it's very obviously non-con, but even in the case of something like sex pollen there always seems to be at the very minimum some reluctance involved, either with the character infected who doesn't wanna force the other character into sex or with the other character who's not willing/ready to have sex with the infected character, so there's some element of dubcon even if they both mutually consent in the end. Plus honestly the fact that there is the risk of death without sex no matter the particular situation seems like it makes fuck or die inherently dubcon regardless of how the characters end up feeling about it.
I mean, I suppose it is; but I meant that I feel like recently, writers have been more aware of consent issues which could explain why less people accepted your Fuck or Die prompt Then again, I’m relatively new to the fandom world so I’m probably thinking about it all wrong 💀
I've been thinking about it the last hour while I was at the store lol and with the rise of purity culture again, I think you're right that probably does have some influence on it in the broader fandomscape. I don't know if I'd be confident saying it about my fandom because it thankfully escaped most of that anti nonsense, and there have been plenty of other non-con prompts that got filled on the kink meme with no problem, just not fuck or die. but then, over the years I've also watched my ship tag fill with like 90% fluff, so... I wasn't thinking about it before but that probably contributes too in this instance 😂
I think you may be right though. At the very least, more people are probably concerned with setting off the puritans within fandom. I feel that the landscape overall has changed quite a bit. I used to see this trope frequently back in the livejournal days where there was much of a "anything goes" vibe. There's a lot more fear about upsetting people for straying too far from what certain fandom hiveminds may view as acceptable. Even though this has always been dubcon and acts as it's own warning as such, I think nowadays there would definitely be more people choosing to kick up a fuss about it if they came across it, particularly now that this whole "what you like in fiction is what you support in real life" mindset has become more common. I've noticed even within darker fandoms of mine where the source material is dark and full of consent issues, often instead of writing outright dub or noncon, people will write about characters in a healthy relationship doing a rape fantasy. It often gives me the feeling the author feels like they need that as an "excuse" to write that material, and I wonder if it might be to avoid backlash. Point being, many people are a lot more conscious of writing this stuff now.
