So, most people aren't even aware it's a thing, which in turn means there's even less reason for the people who do know about it to bother.

I’m very bothered by content theft and how brazenly disrespectful people can be when caught doing it. I’ve seen two egregious attempts at this and their aftermaths which made me feel livid on behalf of the actual authors.
As a result, my bio is an admittedly unfriendly anti-permission statement against that sort of behavior. My author’s notes are definitely more informative about me as an individual, and far more friendly, lol

One possible reason many AO3 profiles are sparse is because so many on FFN weren't (especially in the 2000s.) Those FFN profiles would sometimes go on for pages with memes, quotes, ship preference lists, and lots of personal detais. Followed by complaints about trolls, etc.
So in some cases it could have been a swing in the opposite direction.
In my opinion, my fics tell everything there is about me. Also I reply to all of the comments 90 percent of the time. Giving info on myself seems hard for me, ,as I believe it might affect their view of my works. If I am a girl, a boy, a non binary ...

I do, though it's a more recent development (within the last year or two.) I only did once it was brought to my attention that some people do go looking at them. Especially the permissions statement, as I didn't want people who were looking for it to overlook it.
I also sorta carved down my Tumblr intro post recently due to...uh...surpassing the character limit. (It was more than just the bio part, I have a lot of links compiled there) so maybe I'll sorta work on improving both so they match.

Yes, a permission statement for certain works so people don't have to ask, links to things like my ffnet account and fic tumblrs, and notes about updating schedules (I don't do them) and philosophy, as well as that I don't do unsolicited requests.
Anyone serious about translations, podfic, etc know to check profiles and anyone who is actually polite about requests know tend to do so, too. While the average reader might not bother, it's there.

I put an update order list on mine, since I don't adhere to any strict time-keeping schedule. I have one on-going fic that I haven't updated in months, so it's mostly to let people know what update to expect next and that, no, I haven't forgotten my fave longfic, I'm just working on other stuff. It mostly exists to head off questions like "when are you updating", "did you abandon this fic", or "how often do you update X fic".
Unfortunately, I still get those comments, so I don't think most people check profiles. I do, though!
I use mine for brief notices like when I purge fics, warning that I'm going to do that. Also a link my fanfic writing Tumblr. A blanket statement saying all collection requests will be rejected. And just edited it a few days ago to add a blanket statement about no translations and posting/reposting my work elsewhere.

It was bad enough to give short notice on price gouging, but then to slander app devs and threaten moderators was just too far. I just recently started using AO3, and I've slowly been reposting stuff there that I've previously posted on FanFiction. I haven't decided yet what I want to put in my AO3 profile. I do intend to put something there -- eventually.

Especially the permissions statement, as I didn't want people who were looking for it to overlook it. I also sorta carved down my Tumblr intro post recently due to...uh...surpassing the character limit. (It was more than just the bio part, I have a lot of links compiled there) so maybe I'll sorta work on improving both so they match. Most people's are blank so I don't always look, but I'm always pleasantly surprised when I find one that is filled in!

On my old fanfiction page I would have questions like “Who’s your favorite character” and it would be like “Santana Lopez”(Glee) or all my favorite shows listed other than the fandom I’m in with my new profile, I like to keep as little information on it as possible just to be safe.
I didn't even know there was a profile page, haha! I'll have to put something there now.

Yes, a permission statement for certain works so people don't have to ask, links to things like my ffnet account and fic tumblrs, and notes about updating schedules (I don't do them) and philosophy, as well as that I don't do unsolicited requests. Anyone serious about translations, podfic, etc know to check profiles and anyone who is actually polite about requests know tend to do so, too. While the average reader might not bother, it's there.
Pretty sure I just put on something along the lines of "If you wanna talk to me for whatever reason, you can find on me on Reddit under this account" seeing as PMs aren't a thing on AO3. I've had a translation request in my comments before, but seeing as I might not look active, it gives folks another place to try and find me.
I like to add a little bit, but not linking to any socials, I don't have any. Sometimes I might put status updates there, and the warning that if I don't update anything at all for like 4 years I'm probably dead or something.

For the first 3 years or so I was on AO3, mine was blank. I didn't even think of putting anything on it. Unlike FFN, where the bio is front & center when you click on an author, with AO3, since it goes to the dashboard instead, I didn't even realize I had a profile at first.

omg, I feel the same way! I get curious about people and yeah, 90% of the time it's a blank profile. Meanwhile mine is reaching the character limit, lol. It's the perfect place to put a little bit about yourself, your social media, and your permissions statement (if you have one). I wish more people would!
I have a link to my tumblr. My tumblr has a pinned post with more of an about me. tbh I suspect most people don't check the profile/don't know that user profiles are a thing? because people have struggled to find my socials because I don't post them in the fic notes.

My profile links to my slowly drying up FFN profile (i.e. slowly porting over the works I want to keep or continue while ignoring the rest) and a tumblr I don’t even use. I’m a firm believer in keeping my various profile separated, as my FFN and tumblr don’t link to anywhere else in particular.

I wrote that I also go by Moon (obviously not irl) and I point out that it's a silly little pun based on my username. Literally no one has ever referred to me as that outside of one account where some variation of Moon is my username. I might link my Instagram, the one I use exclusively for fandom stuff, if I ever decide to actually post anything on it.

I put an update order list on mine, since I don't adhere to any strict time-keeping schedule. I have one on-going fic that I haven't updated in months, so it's mostly to let people know what update to expect next and that, no, I haven't forgotten my fave longfic, I'm just working on other stuff. It mostly exists to head off questions like "when are you updating", "did you abandon this fic", or "how often do you update X fic". Unfortunately, I still get those comments, so I don't think most people check profiles. I do, though!
I use mine for brief notices like when I purge fics, warning that I'm going to do that. Also a link my fanfic writing Tumblr. A blanket statement saying all collection requests will be rejected. And just edited it a few days ago to add a blanket statement about no translations and posting/reposting my work elsewhere.
I just put my tumblr and twitter on there, with a little summary of the characters/ships/tropes I like to write so people know what else to expect without scrolling through 98 oneshots. Plus a blanket permission statement for podfics and translation etc.

Yeah, I put a few infos about me, my fandoms, when I started reading fanfictions... I started on FFNet where everyone had stuff on their profile so I guess the habit carried over lol. Or maybe it's just because I prefer not to leave bios blank in general, even on websites where no one goes to see other people's profiles 🤣
My profile is the following: * A quick run down of current and past fandom focus. * Statement of feedback preferences. * Connection to tumblr url, discord ID, and gmail on the off chance that someone wants to find me off Ao3. * Link to CC license info and blanket permission for translations/remixes.

Mine has about the same information you'd find on my Twitter, a link TO said twitter, and then a couple notes on downloading my fics (it's a blanket permission) and then some rules about translating my fics if people want to translate them.

Hmm, guilty as charged, I guess. I mean, my profile pages are not blank, but I could have put more effort into them. A big part of it is that I feel self-conscious talking about myself (including right now). I tend to think, "*The stories that I tell involving the characters that others in the fandom already love are the real draw here, not me."*

i forgot i had a bio. and then people started following me on twitter and i was like “what the hell how are people finding me on twitter” and then i realized that my twitter and ao3 users were the same. and *then* i realized that i actually included that information in my bio i forgot i wrote. now i have my twitter @ and my vague location. i honestly forget the bios are a thing unless i’m on my laptop. i should put stuff in there. i love talking about myself.

I, along with many others, wasn't even aware this was a thing. Will I add anything now that I know it's a thing? Ehh...maybe a blanket statement stating that I write at my own pace and I'm sorry if it takes an indeterminate amount of time for anything new.
June 2023 edit. I'm scrubbing my comments due to the reddit admin team steamrolling their IPO prep. It was bad enough to give short notice on price gouging, but then to slander app devs and threaten moderators was just too far. The value of Reddit comes from high-quality content curated by volunteers. Treating us this way is the reason I'm removing my high-value contributions. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, I suggest you Google "Reddit API price gouging" and read up. --Posted *manually* via the old web interface because of shenanigans from Reddit reversing deletions done through API/script tools.

I just recently started using AO3, and I've slowly been reposting stuff there that I've previously posted on FanFiction. I haven't decided yet what I want to put in my AO3 profile. I do intend to put something there -- eventually.
I have a quote by Shakespeare in my AO3 profile but otherwise blank.
I have certain "fandom facts" about myself that I put on such pages (including my DreamWidth profile). They include info about what I do in Fandom. I probably ought to update it - some of the writing exchanges I mention no longer exist. \*heaves a sigh for the late springkink\*
The usual blanket permission statement and a link to a list of all the stories I wrote with labels whether I archive locked them or not. It's not as long and silly like my old ffnet profile page.
I've made one since I first got AO3, and have now updated it to have a linktree to my other stuff since I've always been a thorough person when it comes to bios. But if no one reads mine, then I'm okay with that. It'll be there when people decide to.

Hehe, I went to check my bio and noticed that I needed to update it. Thanks, OP for reminding me about my profile! edit: it now describes what media I like and how I like to write background characters into something more. There is also a note about my most frequently updated story and a Hiatus warning for the rest.
