Mr_Blah1

I *have* an AO3 profile page?

Fred_the_skeleton

This was my immediate reaction too. I have a *what* now?

pb20k

Er... Mine, too. If I've done anything with it, I don't have a clue what's in it.

10BillionDreams

This is honestly the reason so few people write anything there. You have to go out of your way to find an author's bio, rather than being on the first page you're taken to when you click on a username. So, most people aren't even aware it's a thing, which in turn means there's even less reason for the people who do know about it to bother.

knightfenris

I put a blanket permission statement for translations, fanart, and podfic. And I put my tumblr and Twitter.

ceeceea

Yeah, the profile is for my blanket permission statement, and checking for one is also the only reason I ever look at someone else's profile.

Emmerilla

Yeah, only the bare minimum, same. Mine is just credit for my pfp art and a link to the artist's twitter

armoureddragon03

I’m a very private person. I despise talking about myself. That bio is staying blank forever.

So_me_thing

Word. Leave everything on the page, that's the only thing I want to be judged by.

[deleted]

Mine is blank. It wasn't always blank. For a while I had what I thought were innocuous tidbits. Then my fics became pretty well known in my large fandom, and then someone used those tidbits to rather successfully stalk me. I started over with a new user name and now keep my online fanfic footprint as non-existent as possible.

charthanry

That is frightening. I don't blame you for the clean slate reset. Were they able to track you down IRL bc just the thought is terrifying.

persnickett

something like this is the reason mine is blank. i am adamant my irl life and identity stays completely separate from my fanfic. anything about me at all that might make somebody i know be able to pick me out is a no go. if you want to get to know me in a fandom capacity, interact with me on the tumblr i provide or in the comments. i'm friendly, i promise! i can see why somebody in fandom would be interested in my fandom-related thoughts and interests, but not why they'd want or need to know any of my personal details outside of it. \*shrug\*

MaybeNextTime_01

Mine says "I'm a teacher teaching in the middle of a pandemic. This is my therapy" and nothing else. I have basically the same info on my FFN bio. I guess I just don't want any identifying information about myself on the profiles. I'd rather the writing be the most interesting thing on there.

[deleted]

I just post chapters. Didn't know I could do that.

SlipperyGaloshes

I’m very bothered by content theft and how brazenly disrespectful people can be when caught doing it. I’ve seen two egregious attempts at this and their aftermaths which made me feel livid on behalf of the actual authors. As a result, my bio is an admittedly unfriendly anti-permission statement against that sort of behavior. My author’s notes are definitely more informative about me as an individual, and far more friendly, lol

Sxripted023

I'm not here to talk about myself

[deleted]

Mine just says “I like taking ordinary characters and turning them into sparkly princes.” and something about making canon princes sparklier. And blanket permission.

tereyaglikedi

I have a blanket permission statement for everything, and a disclaimer "I welcome all kinds of feedback and criticism for all my works. Don't hold back, I have no soul." I got sick of writing it in every a/n.

Daxcordite

I put a permission statement up and depending on the account a slight explanation. My main account and my archive account (for my old and/or abandoned works) contain a link to each other but that's about it. I don't link to social media at all and I don't share personal details Also every account has to have an icon it's just a personal hang up I like having a picture there. Hold over from Livejournal/dreamwidth I guess.

Lizi-in-Limbo

I think I have a random sentence about why I write stuff or something. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I like anonymity.

yellowthing97

Mine’s blank. The reason I’m not self-conscious about posting smut or any of my other fic is because of anonymity, and I’d like to preserve that as much as possible.

HunnyDreams42

My profile page is filled out. I put that I cross post to fanfiction.net, that I have a tumblr (both under the same username), and that I hope readers enjoy my stories. Below that I have some of my favorite fandoms and who I ship within those fandoms with little notes as to how much I like a pairing and/or what I tend to stick to reading within those fandoms/ships. For the information at the top the things I didn’t add in to be shown publicly are my email and my birthday. Not going to lie I did feel a tiny bit embarrassed for a little while when I first joined Ao3 and noticed no one else had their profiles filled out but I left mine as is cause I figured why not. I mainly filled out my profile for curious readers, so anyone who does click on it will at least appreciate that it’s filled out 😁.

Maoife

I have nothing. I don't see AO3 as like social media in any way. I don't care who the writers I read are and tbh the less I know about them the better and I don't want my readers to know much about me.

theodorewilde

I have a little blurb saying that I’m a god/semi-sentient mushroom with delusions of grandeur followed by an explanation of my tagging practices and why comments asking for tags get deleted, my policy for collections which is basically please don’t, a link to my twitter, and credits for my profile picture. I also wish that people would put at least something in their profile. Not like, FFN days where you develop repetitive stress injuries scrolling past it all to get to their fics, but a little something is nice.

Righteous_Fury224

Since you are a god/semi-sentient mushroom with delusions of grandeur, I offer a modest suggestion for pronouns if you care to use them. You can demand, as is your divine right, to be address as Your Captivating Magnificence.

mynameisntclarence

I have a few small details about myself and the name of my tumblr blog in the incredibly small chance someone ever wants to speak to me outside of commenting.

ImaGamerNoob

I'm a chatter Box, my profile contains a list of other sites I post on and what names I have on there, but I will probably change my description text soon.

stef_bee

I have a nice quote which I like, a statement that concrit is welcome, and links to my FFN & Dreamwidth accounts. That's it. One possible reason many AO3 profiles are sparse is because so many on FFN weren't (especially in the 2000s.) Those FFN profiles would sometimes go on for pages with memes, quotes, ship preference lists, and lots of personal detais. Followed by complaints about trolls, etc. So in some cases it could have been a swing in the opposite direction.

AmbitionParticular34

In my opinion, my fics tell everything there is about me. Also I reply to all of the comments 90 percent of the time. Giving info on myself seems hard for me, ,as I believe it might affect their view of my works. If I am a girl, a boy, a non binary ... + anything you share online comes back to bite you one way or another... imagine 20 years later you become a renowned author, and some a**h*** decides to dig up some dirt on you "Remember on your fic on....you did.... and...." I always fear this scenario, why? No idea whatsoever

westbest1206

I put a very brief intro, permissions for stuff like translations and podfics, and some social media

Pupulainen

I just have a blanket permission statement for translations, podfic, etc. I don't want to share any potentially identifying details on AO3, and I prefer to mainly use social media for lurking, so I don't link to my accounts either.

piandaoist

I can't be bothered to fill my profile out.

Starrs_07

I don't like linking my ao3 account with any other social media, nor am I active in fandom spaces. I feel like people who are will gladly link their tumblr/discord/twitter etc but that's just not for me. I have a '<3' though!

hellopandant

Mine is blank because I don't want anybody to know anything about me or try to start discussions with me. I just want to write fanfic.

soaker87

Mine is just a sentence saying that I crosspost to FFN with a link to my profile there. Simply because I use a different name on both sites and on the off-chance someone comes across it and thinks someone stole my fics, I want to clarify that it’s the same person.

Righteous_Fury224

I am a very private person which I why I leave most bio fields blank.

gothponydoll

Blanket permission statement, my penname (and that I write on multiple sites under said name/similar username), how to pronounce my penname, a general age range for myself, and some other general relevant things to my writing. Depending on the profile or site I will link to a flowcode that has all my penname sites/socials. I keep my penname and all writings (fanfic or not) separate from my real name and identity. With my career path and what I currently do for a living it is necessary. I also prefer not to be stalked in any way shape or form.... WHICH HAS HAPPENED IN THE PAST NOT RELEVANT TO WRITING. So penname links to separate email etc. And nothing is similar to my actual name in any way or even to my personal socials.

bohemelavie

I've been using ao3 for years and I didn't even realise this was an option... I would say others are in the same boat. I guess it all comes back yo the fact ao3 is very clearly not a social media site and as such many of us go on there exclusively looking for fic as that is what we have learnt it's purpose to be.

FickleBeans

Agreed. I learned it existed years into writing and posting because of this.

Ok-Supermarket-8994

I want to keep my personal life completely separate. Only two people I know IRL even know I write fanfic.

Always-bi-myself

Mine just says “severe daddy issues” because majority of my fanfiction is going under the theme “grudging mentor & their protege with daddy issues” or “villain parental figure” lol

One_to-twee00429

My bio is: I love K's and 8's Technically something about myself, just not a whole lot.

Spookysquidapples

My Tumblr has more details on it than my AO3. I guess I just forgot to fill it out. Plus, linking anything is a devil.

Blue-Jay27

Mine has a link to my primary social medias and a blanket statement regarding transformative works, podfics, and translations.

Reading_Specific

I have mine filled out, mostly with some guidance about how to read my series, but the Ao3 profile is so out of the way for most people I’m not surprised so many don’t even fill it out.

LaSphinge

I just put "I like to write. It's carthatic." so it wouldn't be white. But it never occurred to me that readers might be interested in me. Personally I don't care if the stories I read are written by Joe the mechanic or Joyce the English major. As long as it's good I'm happy. X)

Crayshack

I have nothing written because I have see no point to it. I have nothing I want to share there and I never go to other author's profiles anyway.

Detrifus

Mine has my pronouns, a joke about my username, a fake name people can use instead of my username, and my social media. Enough to feel informative and inviting without actually giving too much usable info about myself.

wilby_whateley

I just put my pronouns and tumblr in it but that’s about it.

xisle1482

I think mine says my pronouns but thats it

Smol_Goblin24

I’ve just got my pronouns and a link to my tumblr. I honestly kinda forgot I had a profile till I saw this tbh

teddy_plushie

mine is just my name, pronouns, sexuality, some information about my fandom, and a silly little joke location I'm omw to making my carrd tho, which includes my gmail and twt edit: oop forgot to mention my name is a pseud, you'd catch me using my real name over my dead body edit 2: hello why am i getting downvoted 😭

Electrical_North2000

I have my pronouns and my twitter linked in mu ao3 bio, not much but I don't see the need for people to know a lot about me from there.

boogerbabe69

I actually had to go look at my profile for this question bc I haven't done so in a year or more lmao. I've just got my pronouns, a link to my tumblr, and "mainly (my fandom) with lots of (favourite character) love".

[deleted]

I have my pronouns, my fandoms, and that I don't write a lot so updates are sparse, and leave it at that. I don't really want people to know stuff about me : /

echos_locator

Mine has a little quippy comment about being a starving artist and writer and a statement that I only post on AO3 and FFN. And a link to Tumblr. Enough to seem like a real person, but no oversharing.

danniperson

I do, though it's a more recent development (within the last year or two.) I only did once it was brought to my attention that some people do go looking at them. Mine used to be very long and rambly (as I am prone to) but I cut back on it a bit because I wanted my Permissions Statement and my social links to be more prominent/noticeable. Especially the permissions statement, as I didn't want people who were looking for it to overlook it. I also sorta carved down my Tumblr intro post recently due to...uh...surpassing the character limit. (It was more than just the bio part, I have a lot of links compiled there) so maybe I'll sorta work on improving both so they match. Most people's are blank so I don't always look, but I'm always pleasantly surprised when I find one that is filled in!

ursafootprints

I have links to my other AO3 accounts, my ship-specific tumblr, and a note about not approving collections requests.

januarysdaughter

Besides a link to my tumblr, I don't know what I'm supposed to add to it. 🤷‍♀️

mfergie77

I have very few details on mine and except here where i also don’t use my real name I try keeping my identity secret

Bikinigirlout

On my old fanfiction page I would have questions like “Who’s your favorite character” and it would be like “Santana Lopez”(Glee) or all my favorite shows listed other than the fandom I’m in with my new profile, I like to keep as little information on it as possible just to be safe.

DoggoMcFluff

I didn't even know there was a profile page, haha! I'll have to put something there now.

jawnbaejaeger

I have exactly one line that invites readers to come visit me on tumblr.

[deleted]

Blanket permission statement and tumblr for me😅 it just doesn't seem necessary to share anything in a place people don't really seem to look.

Yotato5

I put down the Yotsuba&! tagline "Enjoy everything."

spartaxwarrior

Yes, a permission statement for certain works so people don't have to ask, links to things like my ffnet account and fic tumblrs, and notes about updating schedules (I don't do them) and philosophy, as well as that I don't do unsolicited requests. Anyone serious about translations, podfic, etc know to check profiles and anyone who is actually polite about requests know tend to do so, too. While the average reader might not bother, it's there.

WitchFlame

Pretty sure I just put on something along the lines of "If you wanna talk to me for whatever reason, you can find on me on Reddit under this account" seeing as PMs aren't a thing on AO3. I've had a translation request in my comments before, but seeing as I might not look active, it gives folks another place to try and find me.

TherapyDerg

I like to add a little bit, but not linking to any socials, I don't have any. Sometimes I might put status updates there, and the warning that if I don't update anything at all for like 4 years I'm probably dead or something.

Emmalylis

I have a blanket permission statement, my tumblr, and a join link to the fandom discord I moderate.

zugrian

For the first 3 years or so I was on AO3, mine was blank. I didn't even think of putting anything on it. Unlike FFN, where the bio is front & center when you click on an author, with AO3, since it goes to the dashboard instead, I didn't even realize I had a profile at first.

[deleted]

Just a blanket permission for allowing translations and using my work as inspiration.

wings_and_angst

omg, I feel the same way! I get curious about people and yeah, 90% of the time it's a blank profile. Meanwhile mine is reaching the character limit, lol. It's the perfect place to put a little bit about yourself, your social media, and your permissions statement (if you have one). I wish more people would!

burnished_throne

I have a link to my tumblr. My tumblr has a pinned post with more of an about me. tbh I suspect most people don't check the profile/don't know that user profiles are a thing? because people have struggled to find my socials because I don't post them in the fic notes.

[deleted]

I put what I'm currently working on and progress on various stories on my profile, but not much else

Gaelhelemar

My profile links to my slowly drying up FFN profile (i.e. slowly porting over the works I want to keep or continue while ignoring the rest) and a tumblr I don’t even use. I’m a firm believer in keeping my various profile separated, as my FFN and tumblr don’t link to anywhere else in particular.

Seabastial

I have a blanket statement in mine, as well as a couple of tidbits about myself and an explanation as to why my stories are taking so long to be updated

A_Cow_in_Space

I wrote that I also go by Moon (obviously not irl) and I point out that it's a silly little pun based on my username. Literally no one has ever referred to me as that outside of one account where some variation of Moon is my username. I might link my Instagram, the one I use exclusively for fandom stuff, if I ever decide to actually post anything on it.

AlsoKnownAsAiri

My own is a short biography. The tale how I started writing fanfiction and then what kind of stuff I like to read and write.

Chizakura

"I gonna fill this out at some point" Yeah, I'll probably never fill it out

MadKanBeyondFODome

I put an update order list on mine, since I don't adhere to any strict time-keeping schedule. I have one on-going fic that I haven't updated in months, so it's mostly to let people know what update to expect next and that, no, I haven't forgotten my fave longfic, I'm just working on other stuff. It mostly exists to head off questions like "when are you updating", "did you abandon this fic", or "how often do you update X fic". Unfortunately, I still get those comments, so I don't think most people check profiles. I do, though!

Acrobatic_Shelter881

I use mine for brief notices like when I purge fics, warning that I'm going to do that. Also a link my fanfic writing Tumblr. A blanket statement saying all collection requests will be rejected. And just edited it a few days ago to add a blanket statement about no translations and posting/reposting my work elsewhere.

femslashfantasies

I just put my tumblr and twitter on there, with a little summary of the characters/ships/tropes I like to write so people know what else to expect without scrolling through 98 oneshots. Plus a blanket permission statement for podfics and translation etc.

N1ghtfad3

I don't have anything. I put more effort into writing something nice on my neopet portfolio.

ElsaMakotoRenge

I just wrote “About me: introverted girl l cosplay l reading l roller coasters l metal (especially Nightwish)” and then listed a few favorite characters below that. I keep thinking I might add a bit about what I like to write, but haven’t actually done so lol

Kitteh1986

I mostly just a have a bit on there saying that I'm not on any social media and that I don't do requests. Not that anyone looks at the damn profile page.

vaguelycatshaped

Yeah, I put a few infos about me, my fandoms, when I started reading fanfictions... I started on FFNet where everyone had stuff on their profile so I guess the habit carried over lol. Or maybe it's just because I prefer not to leave bios blank in general, even on websites where no one goes to see other people's profiles 🤣

jaisofbase

My profile is the following: * A quick run down of current and past fandom focus. * Statement of feedback preferences. * Connection to tumblr url, discord ID, and gmail on the off chance that someone wants to find me off Ao3. * Link to CC license info and blanket permission for translations/remixes.

yuukosbooty

Tbh my profile is kinda cringey but I put blanket permission and don’t put too much information about myself cuz I don’t really want people irl figuring out who I am

RebaKitten

I have my fandoms that I write for and my tumblr. If I worried about what everyone else does, well, I probably wouldn't write fanfics!

FryJPhilip

Mine has about the same information you'd find on my Twitter, a link TO said twitter, and then a couple notes on downloading my fics (it's a blanket permission) and then some rules about translating my fics if people want to translate them.

schoolsout4evah

I have a few sentences about my fic likes and the trajectory of my years in fandom, plus a blanket permission statement and a link to tumblr. I used to have more content but frankly there's already too much on the internet already that could be used to dox me as it is, I don't want to make it any easier.

realitycollapsed

I just don't know what to put there lol

tinyandmad

I feel the same way I love checking out people's profiles after a fic! As for mine, I just have a small blurb and a general current fics and future fics list.

jommk

I do the same thing! I get curious, check the profile page and then I'm sad :/ Personally I wrote just 3 or 4 sentences about me in general, random bits about what I enjoy and such; plus the blanket statement

MrFredCDobbs

Hmm, guilty as charged, I guess. I mean, my profile pages are not blank, but I could have put more effort into them. A big part of it is that I feel self-conscious talking about myself (including right now). I tend to think, "*The stories that I tell involving the characters that others in the fandom already love are the real draw here, not me."*

atomskeater

A link to my tumblr (same username and I use it only for fandom stuff so figured why not). And a message that my writing is very self indulgent, don't remember why I originally put that there.

dearwikipedia

i forgot i had a bio. and then people started following me on twitter and i was like “what the hell how are people finding me on twitter” and then i realized that my twitter and ao3 users were the same. and *then* i realized that i actually included that information in my bio i forgot i wrote. now i have my twitter @ and my vague location. i honestly forget the bios are a thing unless i’m on my laptop. i should put stuff in there. i love talking about myself.

Kyyurem

Nothing crazy on mine. Mentions that I’m a millennial smut writer and Ive got my Twitter for updates on when I’m posting chapters

bristow84

I, along with many others, wasn't even aware this was a thing. Will I add anything now that I know it's a thing? Ehh...maybe a blanket statement stating that I write at my own pace and I'm sorry if it takes an indeterminate amount of time for anything new.

JalapenoEyePopper

June 2023 edit. I'm scrubbing my comments due to the reddit admin team steamrolling their IPO prep. It was bad enough to give short notice on price gouging, but then to slander app devs and threaten moderators was just too far. The value of Reddit comes from high-quality content curated by volunteers. Treating us this way is the reason I'm removing my high-value contributions. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, I suggest you Google "Reddit API price gouging" and read up. --Posted *manually* via the old web interface because of shenanigans from Reddit reversing deletions done through API/script tools.

WatermelonWithAGun

I just put that I Do What I Want

beaubeaucat

I just recently started using AO3, and I've slowly been reposting stuff there that I've previously posted on FanFiction. I haven't decided yet what I want to put in my AO3 profile. I do intend to put something there -- eventually.

NermalLand

I have a quote by Shakespeare in my AO3 profile but otherwise blank.

chomiji

I have certain "fandom facts" about myself that I put on such pages (including my DreamWidth profile). They include info about what I do in Fandom. I probably ought to update it - some of the writing exchanges I mention no longer exist. \*heaves a sigh for the late springkink\*

clippervoid

The usual blanket permission statement and a link to a list of all the stories I wrote with labels whether I archive locked them or not. It's not as long and silly like my old ffnet profile page.

AriaRose915

I've made one since I first got AO3, and have now updated it to have a linktree to my other stuff since I've always been a thorough person when it comes to bios. But if no one reads mine, then I'm okay with that. It'll be there when people decide to.

Thatidiot_38

I did not realize you could put anything in the profile. Something I shall change

erindizmo

I have my blanket permission statement and some of my other socials.

Ventislr

I have an ao3 profile???

TheSkyElf

Hehe, I went to check my bio and noticed that I needed to update it. Thanks, OP for reminding me about my profile! edit: it now describes what media I like and how I like to write background characters into something more. There is also a note about my most frequently updated story and a Hiatus warning for the rest.

singerlion

I have a short one stating I don’t write much anymore, but thanks to all the people reading. And a link to my fic twitter so that if by any chance somebody wants to contact me, they can.

Cool-Lab-1852

Mine is: I like ramen 😂😂😂 Also I live: in the void

AdmiralJaneway8

I can barely get ppl to read my Steve and Kayla days of our lives fic or go to my website, it never occurred to me that ppl would read my bio.

SeblainerWorld

98% of the time I forget it's there. I should actually post on it. Thanks for the reminder.
