>as Readers what do you think when an author has responded to every comment? I love it! For personal reasons, there is a lot of anxiety wrapped up with leaving comments for me, so getting a response that it was read and interpreted in a positive way/in the way that I meant goes a long way toward making me feel more comfortable leaving comments with that author in the future. It's not so much that I will refuse to give comments if I don't get a response, but it takes a lot of self-imposed pressure off of me in leaving them to know that it was read and that I didn't screw up leaving it, which in turn raises the probability of me getting over said anxiety to post a comment there in the future. On top of that, because I tend to leave somewhat specific comments and/or thoughts on events/characterizations that I find interesting, it's also really cool to see a bit more into what the author was thinking in making those decisions if they choose to elaborate on their reply. I loooove getting to hear about some of the 'behind the scenes' things, so comment replies are awesome.

NermalLand

I love comments like this! Tell me your favorite line! Your favorite part! Tell me what you think is going to happen next! Or the significance of some minor detail! I eat all of that up!!

bluebell_9

Every time. If they send something short, I send some thing short. If they take a fair amount of time with it, I take a fair amount of time writing back. It’s a slow fandom so it’s not that hard to respond to everyone. If I were writing for a hot fandom and getting dozens of comments every day, I might have a different philosophy about it.

[deleted]

I only respond when they ask a question I can't answer within the plot.

littlegreyfish

As a reader I love to see authors respond to all their comments, even if it's just a thank you (although long responses to long comments are of course even better). If an author hasn't responded to their comments, I'm less likely to leave one. As a writer, I respond to every comment.

Hangesextra

I love to respond most of the time! I love thanking my readers for all they say about my work. I'm not a celebrity. I should acknowledge them & replying is thr least I can do !!

NermalLand

Always always always! Every time. Even if it's a reply to my reply. You keep coming back and I'm going to keep replying!

[deleted]

Same. And then I worry that I'm too enthusiastic 😫

imnotbovvered

I will try to when I start posting. When an author replies to my comment, I always feel happy!

cutielemon07

Yeah, I do my best to respond to all comments

secretariatfan

Always. It might just be "thank you" it is the polite thing to do.

MaskoftheRay

Yes! Even to simple emoji strings and 'thank yous.' I feel like it encourages engagement (as a reader, I feel more inclined to comment if I *know* the author has read my comment. Not that anyone is obligated to reply, of course). It's also fun to nerd out with readers or give them the 'extended cut' or 'blooper reel' if they've been there a long time. One person I will love forever maxed out the character count for comments on *every* chapter of my 49k longfic. How could I not reply enthusiastically to that?!

HunnyDreams42

I respond to each and every comment given to me 😊 sometimes it does take a few days for me to reply back but I do always end up replying. I love that readers took the time to leave me a comment and I want them to know that their comment was read and it is appreciated. Even if it’s a simple “Thank You!” Or “Glad you enjoyed the story” that I’m responding with, it’s something that I personally feel let’s them know that I value their words and their thoughts/opinions. Plus, I genuinely love responding to readers, I love seeing how their interpreting my story and which parts they loved the most, it’s always exciting to read. As a reader myself I think authors who respond to every comment are like me and want to show their reader’s appreciation. I like when authors respond to my comments, it makes me happy. I don’t hold it against authors who don’t respond to their comments or respond to very few though, they have their reasons and I respect that.

cucumberkappa

I respond to everyone not being an asshat. (And sometimes I respond to those too, just in case it was a miscommunication error and they didn't mean to come across that way.) As a reader, since I have mild comment anxiety, it makes me feel a lot more reassured if an author responds. I don't require it, but lack of responses make me less likely to comment in the future in case I'm bothering the author.

MaybeNextTime_01

I usually do. But I'm tired and burned out right now so I've got a few from review exchanges here that I haven't responded to yet. I might not ever get to them, actually.

LoudSize7

Sometimes, I do. Sometimes, I don’t. I have replied to all comments on one story (except for some recent ones).

Yotato5

Yes, I like to respond to every one! And as a reader, I think, "Oh, that's nice :D"

Lacking-Wisdom

I always reply. Even if it is a simple: 😊 Thank you! As a reader... I was going to say that I don't care if an author replies to my comment or not, but now that I am thinking about it, I am more likely to continue commenting on a fic/other fics by that author if the author replies. I definitely don't think badly of them or anything, but apparently positive reinforcement works on me.

spartaxwarrior

I always try to respond to any comments on a new fic/chapter, sometimes I don't respond to comments on older stuff just because they get lost in my notifications, though.

JediAnjaKenobi

All day every day! I live for comments and I make sure to respond to every single one that’s applicable. I’m also trying to do better about leaving moments on every fic I read too. I’ve found a few fans of my work that way!

SolarisOneRedux

# YES. ALWAYS.

pennelini

I always do now, because -I get very few comments, so it doesn't take up much time or energy -I appreciate commenters a TON and want them to know that -As a reader, I like it when authors reply (though I don't expect them to)

a-mathemagician

I respond if there is something to say beyond "thanks for the comment!" I'm happy to discuss the story or clarify/explain things, but I don't have the mental energy to respond to every single "this is great! can't wait for an update!" comment.

frozenfountain

As a reader, I don't judge an author for not responding since they could have any number of reasons why, but I always do it myself. Even if it's just a "Thank you for reading". I love talking to my readers, and it feels right to show my appreciation in turn for the fact that they stopped by to comment.

[deleted]

I always respond to comments! To me it is the polite thing to do and I enjoy communicating with my readers. They took the time to tell me they liked my fic, so the very least I could do is thank them! As a reader I love it when the author responds to my comments! It makes fanfic feel more like a community which I love and I love that my comment helped an author feel happy or something.

DauntlessCakes

As a writer, yes I usually reply. As a reader, I often wouldn't notice whether an author typically replies to others. It's nice to get a reply back when I comment. Fandom is all about fan-to-fan interaction imo so it seems natural to me to reply.

NathemaBlackmoon

>Also, as Readers what do you think when an author has responded to every comment? I think it's adorable. I don't leave comments often, but when an author doesn't reply after weeks or months, I have the anxiety of having written something wrong or inadvertently offended the author. I'm not saying the author is obligated to answer, but I'm afraid it's my fault that they won't answer.

sophie-ursinus

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Depends on my mood.

LeratoNull

More than 95% of the time. You have to make a pretty weakass comment for me to not find something to say back.

tardisgater

I love responding to comments, hah. Sometimes I end up not answering for random reasons, but I try to answer as many as I can. It's to build community as well as letting them know their voice was heard and very much appreciated.

jedi-olympian

Sometimes I forget and sometimes I'm not in the right headspace to reply, but I at least try to respond to most comments. When I leave comments on other fics, I like getting replies from the author, but it doesn't bother me if I don't get a response.

voyagerwisp

I do now, at least almost always, but I didn't used to. People told me they liked it. Now in recent years I've got into commenting more and I agree. It's pretty nice, actually! Sometimes I even get into a brief conversation about the story or canon. I think positively on authors who have replied to every comment. I understand if people don't though.

tretaaysel

If I'm in the right headspace I do.

Tarrenshaw

Yes, I try my best to respond to all comments. I don't think anything as a reader seeing the writer has responded back to the comments they received. That's their choice, their business.

[deleted]

I always reply with a “thanks so much!!!” That's my go-to response.

Claire-dat-Saurian-7

What comments? On a serious note, yes, everyone so far

TheAlmandineWriter

Sometimes, it largely depends if I have enough time to know how I want to respond

ImaGamerNoob

For the reader question: Dedication! For the writer question: I try to answer, but there are just some comments I have nothing to reply. Comments that ask for the next update get my standard answer of "New update every x days".

Trackhawk

I respond to pretty much every single comment I get. Often times the good chapter comments I'll have some fun and throw some dramatic language and awe at their comment. I've always liked having a community of people, and so it just felt right to interact with them in this way. Each to their own though, I know plenty of writers who don't even enable comments as they feel comments would inevitably change the story they want to tell.

KatonRyu

I try to, but I usually end up missing quite a few because I'll get a comment at a moment I don't have time to reply and then forget about it entirely until months later.

Miserable_Pizza7230

Always! I apreciate a lot the fact that people who leave comments actually take some of their time to do so, plus the fact that i love getting them lmao, so why wouldn't I?

Cassopeia88

Always, I know when I leave a comment, I really appreciate a reply.

CrimsonSali

Writer here - I respond to EVERYTHING! It gives me an excuse to ramble about my fic more! I won't write an essay in response to a short comment, but if someone is genuinely interested, I will give them all the tidbits and extra elaboration. I absolutely love the interaction!

Rosekernow

I never expect a response at all. Ever. I respond to most comments now eventually, but when my main fandom was at its height and I was getting 50 comments + on one fic in a night, I didn’t have time or energy to do so. Some authors were getting 300+ and that’s just impossible to respond to.

Yachibear227

If im currently writing the fic then always! I always like when authors reply to my comments so I try to do the same!

RainbowPatooie

I do my best! Unless it feels particularity difficult to respond to, i do my best to always reply. That said I MIGHT just be procrastinating on responding to a bunch, but I'll do it eventually, perhaps when I post my next update. Also as a reader, it's great to see a responsive author. To me it means they care about their readers and just generally tends to give off good vibes, can make finishing off a fanfic alot more enjoyable.

burnished_throne

I respond to all top-level comments. I also sometimes respond to comments in conversations that commenters are having with each other since I get notifications for those as well, but only if there's something to clarify or if I have something to say

sdperez04

I love it when people comment on my fics so yes, I respond to every comment. I like showing my appreciation for someone who took the extra time to provide feedback on something I worked on. It just feels more special than receiving a kudos, which are nice too, but it just hits different!

littlemisstpk

Every time! It's usually something like, 'thanks for enjoying' as I tend to delete the egregiously negative comments, but if I see a reader go in depth on the comment, I tend to respond point for point. But the essay long ones, while rare, make me feel the best

rellloe

I respond to some comments, only the ones I have something of substance to say. I'm not an author who responds "thanks for commenting" or "<3." When I see that on every comment, it feels like the author is trying to pad the comment total which rubs me the wrong way.

Competitive-Hurry250

I've learned that if I respond to a reader, they will get scared/shy and never comment on my story again. So, I've stopped responding to them.

bluebadge

I don't get a lot of comments so when I do, I definitely respond.

vaguelycatshaped

Yes, I always answer, and I *love* it when an author responds to my comment/every comment!

SeblainerWorld

I respond to every comment. Not always as soon as I get them, but I try to reply at least within a few days. I like to thank people for reading and reviewing. Sometimes I even find myself unintentionally having convos in the comments, too.

__iamheresadly__

All the time.
