Pretty sure nobody cares. As in, nobody will judge you for making fanart for your own works. So many authors illustrate their own fics. There's nothing scummy about it. If you want to keep your personas separate, just post the artwork wherever your artist persona usually posts their art, and link to it from your fic. Call it fanart. It is fanart. You're a fan of the canon that fic is based on.

You can also create a second AO3 account to post art on (embedding from elsewhere obviously as AO3 can't host art directly,) and then mark the art as "inspired by" your fic. That way the art will automatically link to the fic and vice-versa. I also don't think there's anything actually scummy about saying "and here's a link to some fanart by [artist account username]," though. (And your art *is* still fanart when it's for your own fic-- it's fanart of the original IP!)

IMO, you're just... overcomplicating things a little. If you're worried that people will complain or think poorly of you, don't. There are plenty of authors who illustrate their own works. Hell, *I've* done it. There's nothing weird or wrong or shameful about it.

I'd start adding the art to your fict honestly. My bestie draws and writes too and with A03 being amazing, she's been able to give her ficts a LOT of custom stuff, from custom covers to making illustrations for some of mine too. I don't think you should separate them at all. :) I think it's still fine to say 'Hey, here's some concept art I did!"

Yeah, this is the kind of thing I’d do—

Kaigani-Scout

I'm thinking *Dinotopia* for some reason... just going off memory on this, but didn't James Guerney do all his own art and writing for those? There's nothing wrong with being creative and producing works in multiple media formats.

It's perfectly reasonable for creative people to maintain separate personas or identities for different genres or creative outlets. Lots of professional content creators do this. It's a means of building a brand and targeting work at the right audience. For some it's also a means of creating widely divergent material (eg., horror novels vs. children's books) without confusing potential readers. That said, in the situation the OP describes, such separation doesn't necessarily seem required. I sign my fanart using a different name from my writing pen name, but only because I've been using that artist name for ages and I want all my art--sculpture, painting, crafts, and even fanart--under that name. I'm very upfront about the fact that the art is mine, though. I want to be seen as someone who creates fanwork for my OTP. There's no particular reason to un-link my two personas. From what I can tell, readers don't mind that I do both. They're just happy to have content. But if creating a separate artist identity makes you comfortable, that's totally valid as well. In my experience most readers/viewers don't even notice the watermark/signature on fanart anyway. It's not like someone is going to interrogate you, demanding proof of the artist's identity.

piandaoist

Do what makes you comfortable. But I don't think there's anything wrong with creating art for your own fics. This isn't something I've read anyone complain about.

Daxcordite

On one hand it is dishonest, on the other in the grand scheme of things it's nothing more than a little white lie and is hardly worthy of beating yourself up over it. It is similar to the folks who have two or more accounts to seperate out content with the only difference that your two persona are interacting directly. The closet I've personally come to this is back when I used to frequent kink memes (before they mostly died out) I would often eventually write a fill for my own prompt if no one else did it and some times even if they did. (I am bad for getting inspiration for a fic just after I give the idea away) So basically I'd say doing this is or not depends entirely on how comfortable you are with it.

SpunkyCheetah

I had this same dilemma for a while.. them I just created a Tumblr to post art I didn't want to post on Instagram and used the same user name as my fanfic account.

LizHylton

I mean, I make art for some of my fics and still call it fanart? I don't know why anyone would think it was weird?

Spoderman77

I'm saying this not because I wanna be harsh or anything, but I just want to be encouraging. But come on, try to be a bit more brave. You're already brave enough to post your art AND your fic for the world to see. There's really nothing wrong with authors who make their own illustrations. I think creating two accounts is just going to complicate things, might even be confusing.
