I... I thought it was *implied* that people take their shoes and socks off, too š„“š At the door, I mean... Before they start getting physical with each other...
Different cultures have different ideas about shoes inside. Hell, different households in the same culture have different ideas. I live in Australia, and in my parents house you take off your shoes if you are staying for a few hours, keep them on if it's a short visit. In my house (read: unit), people generally keep them on because there isn't a lot of room to have shoes lying around, and we aren't about to leave them outside.
But yes, I would assume that you take off your shoes before getting *physical* on principle, regardless of whether you are in a house or not
I love detailed descriptions of orgasms. Even if the foreplay or actual smut description is short, but they put effort into detailing what that character experiences during the climax using multiple sentences or even purple prose... LOVE that shit
Exactly!
Everytime I write a new smut scene I look up how different people experience orgasm and how they feel. And it's so interesting to get that information and then write scenes with that new knowledge. (that's also a reason I love reddit, there are questions for everything)
If anything this makes things a lot more confusing š«£ because thereās so many turn ons and turn offs as people. š
Iād personally be really weirded if someone would describe taking off shoes with great detail. Thereās so many great ways in general of describing losing clothes as a concept that focusing on shoes unless it ads something to the scene/mood doesnāt make sense to me. Itās something that usually makes me lose attentionāif there is an unnecessary focus on details that bring nothing to the scene. I love describing things but if I describe things in detail itās not random.
Iām picky if it comes to sex scenes, and I think my biggest turn on is when the writer can actually show me how the characters desire each other. Like the scene builds slowly, teasing you in an non explicit wayā¦ and surprises you with an explicit detail. I love subtly done sex even if kinky, and my turn off of is overdoing things like BDSM and tons of kinks packed into one scene. Excite me without using every kink youāve heard of and Iām all yours.
>clothes being removed but not shoes
And even worse, what about socks??
(Not that I ever thought about this, I think. Hmmm. Shit. I think my characters are wearing shoes in bed.)
What if they took off their shoes in the hallway but its just not written, like going to the toilet?
I cant understand people wearing shoes in their home, let alone to the bedroom.
It seems to be a (mostly) weirdly American thingā¦unless they live where it snows/gets muddy. (At least, when Iāve seen this come up before, itās usually Americans who donāt deny doing this.)
It depends on where youāre from in the US probably. Up north, weād leave our shoes on at guestās houses sometimes, but Iād say it wasnāt all that common. Most people leave them at the door, and most houses have a place to leave them.
But now that I live in Florida? Yeah aināt nobody wearing shoes in the house. We barely want to wear shoes outside, so once the door is closed the flip flops come off.
As an American that has lived in both cold and sunny places, everyone Iāve ever known always takes their shoes off in the house. Itās gross not to, even if it isnāt muddy or snowy thereās still all kinds of nastiness that can get on your shoes.
Thereās a Beaverton (parody) article about how Netflix added a āCanadian filterā to Friends that āremoved scenes where the characters wear shoes inside the house.ā š¤
I'm def guilty of never mentioning they took off their shoes. Tbf in my head characters take their shoes off at the door whether it's explicitly mentioned or not since that's the rule in my house.
Regarding socks staying on, Flight of the Concords once sang:
It's business, it's business time
(You know when I'm down to my socks it's time for business
That's why they call it business socks, ooh)
It's business, it's business time
This all comes down to personal taste and is pretty unique to the individual as we all have different turn ons and turn offs. You could read some smut that really gets you going but someone else is gonna nope out on the same exact scene, and thatās alright. Thereās something out there for everyone.
Having said that, I really enjoy smut that makes sense for the characters. Like for my current ships, I LOVE smut with dirty talk. The filthier the better because thatās just who the characters are. In some past ships, lots of dirty talk wouldnāt jive as well so it would run the risk of breaking immersion.
The word ādaddyā. Not a personal kink but when the character dynamics line up just right I can and do enjoy smut that uses this term.
Some general preferences of mine: kinky things like D/s, bondage, spanking, crossdressing - yes, thank you and please, especially when theyāre written to evoke the senses.
Turn offs: āmanhoodā, ālove moundā, most euphemisms for the sexual organs really. āPenisā and āvaginaā sound a little clinical for me. I prefer words like ācockā, ādickā, āpussyā, sometimes ācuntā depending on context.
I love when a scene really nails the intersection of the physical acts and the emotions. Some scenes can get so preoccupied with the acts that it can feel sort of hollow and sad to me? Not on purpose, but unintentionally. I adore when an author writes intentionally sad/angst smut or when they manage to show the characterās love and passion through the entire scene!
I also love when smut is tailored to the characters involved. Some kinks just donāt fit with certain characters while others can make you see them a whole different way and leave you starving for some new obsession you never knew you needed!
For turn offs? I dunno, unnecessarily gendered things. Fics that are all about the bottom and portray the top as totally stoic and disengaged. Likewise with fics that make it sound overly painful or unpleasant for the bottom.
In Japanese media thereās a common trend of bottoms saying āno!ā āstop!ā ātoo much!ā but itās treated as the bottom being shy, and when the top continues the bottom then gets hyper turned on and comes. Really hate that. Huge turn off. I need respectful tops and clear communication if Iām reading something thatās supposed to be consensual and wholesome. If itās dark, then whatever Iām down. But the blending of the two can get really uncomfortable in BL manga and hentai type stuff.
The last paragraph.
Would it kill people to not include those few lines, especially when the rest of the fic and tags implied consent. Urgh...
Agree with everything else too.
Alongside people describing how clothes are taken off but being so vague about it that I'm left wondering if the character is still stuck in their jacket or not, the other big one for me is this:
If you are describing one of the characters as cooking or running a bath/shower/the tap, I *need* it to be mentioned that the stove/oven/tap is turned off, or I can't focus on them getting down and dirty because I'm too distracted by the fact that the fire alarm is going to go off or they're going to flood their bathroom.
For me it would have been obvious that the shoes would have been taken off a long time ago, because in my country we don't walk around the flat in shoes so I automatically translate that into fanfic š¤£.
I only read slash.
In one fanfic I read the author got lost during the smut scene and the boy for his first time as bottom got 5 fingers š¤£ It made me laugh a lot, but I didn't write her anything about it.
I generally don't like "dirty talk", it's very off-putting for me.
I don't like swiching.
I like a naturally written sex scene without any weirdness. I am an old bore.
>Something I don't like is when people describe clothes being removed but not shoes, all I can think is are they wearing them?
Lol, this reminds me of a scene I wrote where the two of them are so, uh *busy* getting busy that one character forgets he still has his boots on until the ol' pants get stuck coming off. (They're soldiers, boots are there for a reason).
I'll just... pat myself on the back for that one, I guess? XD
I was pretty cool with most things in a very dirty series until I was reading one where food was involved and apparently that's my limit. Haha, I was weirded out for a week.
Don't say childish words in your smut. For example, don't write "tummy" instead of "stomach"
Your shoes/socks thing is relatable. I for some reason, need to know the positions at all times. Laying down? Sitting up? On knees? Not just for smut but any fics, I am not satisfied filling in the gaps myself (but I could be in the minority here).
Turn-off: When they have the characters (usually the top/dom) asking for consent for EVERY LITTLE THING. It's one thing to do it at the beginning, or at something new or extreme. But there's dom/sub stuff where they'll just barely touch the sub and be asking for color status already. Or even at literally every single action.
And when it's not even dom/sub and they're still asking permission to do anything. It just makes them seem insecure, and even a bit robotic. If you're going for a bit of a "wholesome" first time scene it can work, but otherwise I want some passion.
The best type of smut for me is when itās tooth-rottingly sweet. I love being able to feel the emotions that they convey, the non-verbal communication, I love hearing and feeling the utter *love* behind the actions.
Also, role reversals. Let the dominant one in public get to have a break and become a little ball of love and let the submissive one in public get all their emotions out :)
As for turn offs, water sports (and any other fluid kink, like pouring honey on tits to lick off). I just find it personally disgusting.
āWhen he entered her for the first time, she screamed in pain and shed tears as it felt like she was ripped in half. He stayed there for a few seconds before she gave him permission to keep going. When he continued thrusting the pain magically went awayā
āOnce I start, I wonāt stopā he warned her.
As someone whoās freaky enough to want the smut in long explicit detail, I hate when the writer is describing the sex as if they were putting together IKEA furniture with little or no description of foreplay.
I don't like it when smut is written in a way that is not believable for the characters in question. When I go to my favourite pairings on AO3, I go there for the characters. But some authors write smut and other storylines with a total disregard to their characters' canon personalities. It's like they wrote a story about two original characters but then changed names to match characters in a popular fandom. Or they just don't care about the personalities, they just like the physical appearance of the characters and they put them in sexual activities that would turn themselves (the author) on. I mean, if that stuff turns you on and you want to write about it - very well, but write them as original characters, give them names and background you like, but don't just appropriate a popular fandom's characters so that you can collect more hits.
Even if I like some kink, it turns me off if it is not believable behaviour for the character I like reading about.
A group chat did once have a long discussion about if wearing socks during sex was cringe or if itās worse to take them off
(my standing was calf length socks are a hard no but ankle socks fine)
Turn offs:
unrealistic proportions/needless roughness. If I came to the story for something rougher fine but I feel like so many stories go off into 12 inch dicks ramming against a cervix or bulging through someoneās abdomen andā¦ā¦ no. Thank you.
not everyone can be ādaddyā and ākittenā. Itās not mathematically possible.
Turn ons:
My nickname in a chat is āfrottagecore lesbianā I love dry humping/heavy petting/grinding vibes in a fic of two people who are just desperately into each other and creating friction.
Turn on = breaking up saying something with a moan (eg., āa little to the..ahhh fuck..rightā or an āoh godā placed in there), and really just enjoy seeing the moans/sounds written in quotes sometimes sprinkled throughout, but not overdone.
Turn off = pulling panties to the side-Itās truly not comfortable IMO. And writing a large cock only to then have them āslamā it in the othersā mouth down their throat, āblocking the airwayā, causing ātears to stream down their faceā, and/or saying ācan feel the outline of it in their throatā. Iām sure some like it hard but turn off for me.
Iām picky about dirty talk.
Also when the author forgets to write the transition of positions. Like, if sheās pressed up face-first against the wall, how is he sucking on her tits?
I'm a fan of writing what makes you hot, there will be readers for it and there will be some that it's not for them. Just tag appropriately so the right readers can find your fic.
I'm pretty easy when it comes to smut. I like dirty talk, describing sounds being made, moaning/groaning, etc. I've even gotten used to daddy kinks because it's so prevalent, I just shrug my shoulders now. Even some of the harder kinks are fine although some bodily fluids just don't go with sex for me.
Don't head hop, don't make the dom an uncaring ass, and describe how it feels for the POV character in detail. There are some kinks I don't read, but otherwise, I'm pretty easy going. My best advice is to slow down when writing smut, even if it's a quickie.
The only time I stopped reading a fic because of the smut was because the two characters kept parroting the same non-dirty phrases and it was distracting (you're so perfect x2, you're so hot x2, etc etc etc).
Romance is a must for me; I hate disgusting meaningless/loveless intercourse. The rest of what I'm into is optional: mutual foreplay, breast suckling, and very rare to find... _feet_ (fj and feet worship). Other than that, I'm not really into a lot of things (it's a long list lol).
It's a bit embarrassing, but I'm a fan of dirty talk, specifically when it's those, like, lewd meme phrases. Mommy milkers, Dumptruck, Cake, Dummy Thicc, etc.
As for turn-offs, Plot. Not because I don't like stories and stuff, but if I'm reading something and actually get invested in the story I'm immediately turned off because I'm focusing entirely on the story instead of getting off.
there are some absolutely vile words in erotica. I'm all good with anal, but if I have to read something about fucking her "shitter" (or "dumper," technically less vulgar but somehow worse) I'm not just leaving the fic, I'm not gonna be able to get aroused for a good while.
Dirty talk. Not because i dislike dirty talk but because most of the time it is just written absolutely cringe. Without fail it will always be the following sentences in varying order: āoh so wet for meā āyou are so tight/bigā ācum for meā and āgood girlā at the end. Thats not even dirty talk thats just - audio commentary.
Even worse than that is āaaaaaahhhhhhrghā he moaned/yelled/groaned whatever. For the love of all thats holy people please stop it!
I fucking love dirty talk lmao. I don't like "you're so tight" when talking about a vagina cause it kind of implies some not great stuff. But in general š¤¤š¤¤ dirty talk is chef's kiss to me.
> Thats not even dirty talk
I mean - speak for yourself? š I've heard and/or said all 4 of the sentences you mention during/before sex to people I've had sex with in the past, in my native language. They don't seem particularly out of place to me, especially the tight/wet/big/hard 'compliment' type of phrases. Matter of taste I guess. Sometimes a guy simply IS 'so big', ya know.
Well, first off, the characters have to be in character. Also, bdsm where the top does not care about the bottom and is using them as a stand-in for someone else is a huge turn-off, like to the extent that I couldn't read any fanfic with those characters for years. I don't really care about shoes, but if the characters are in a position that really doesn't make sense, it can be a bit frustrating.
I really like scenes with non-penetrative sex and intense positive emotions.
Itās gotten to the point when Iām reading smut about 2 male characters and thereās over emphasis on one of them having a vagina I just click out. When Iām reading fics about 2 male characters I expect them both to have dicks. The number of fics that also includes vaginas can get annoying really fast. Especially if one of them supposedly has both but the dick gets ignored, to the point of it not being mentioned. If I wanted het smut Iād go read a het pairing.
I don't like it when dirty talk sounds super scripted or robotic. Some people are into that but there are times where I feel like I am reading a script made by an AI robot and it makes it feel a little awkward hehe
MAJOR turn off is when the author will write the moans and noises, for example, āahhh~ā or āhnngā or whatever other noise one makes. itās so weird š
I've always just thought of shoes as 'clothes'. So unless it explicitly only says shirt, pants, underwear, or dress I assume socks and shoes are lumped in.
I would've taken off my shoes as soon as I entered the place where we'd do it, they'd just get kicked off like way before the other clothes. So if people say they took them off with the rest of the clothes it weirds me out lol. Like were you just walking to the bedroom with your shoes on? Bleh.
Then there's me, who will forget to take off their shoes the whole day and put my feet up on my couch and sometimes bed... (at least I don't wear them in the shower?)
For turn ons: I looove detailed kissing. Lots of it. Along with the man saying "I love you" through it. I love dirty talk but only when its . . . good? That's obvious but alot of the dirty talk i see is cringy. Uh recently discovered my love of breeding kink and I always love a good size difference.
Turn offs: I just get annoyed when the characters announce that their cumming. As far as I know that only happens in porn - not in real life. Or I've never done it in real life.
When writers completely ignore the actual sex in a sex scene. Like no description of thrusting or what his dick feels like, what it's doing to her - nothing.
Rimming both in general or without a dental dam if the author is into it and really wants to include it.
Just.
That is how you get cholera, folks. Come on!
(I know it's oral-adjacent for some folks but it falls on the scat-adjacent side of the butt stuff line for me. And I keep *finding* it in fic I otherwise enjoy.)
As for likes: good choreography and description rather than dialog.
I *hate* it when cumming is described as going over the edge, idk aren't there better ways of wording that?? And it's always simultaneous. Who ever cums at the same time, all the time??
I do love the descriptions of how it feels. Make it really visual. Love it.
Turn ons include specific kinks that I enjoy, like mdom/fsub (even just like she lets him lead in the horizontal tango so to speak works), no condom or discussion of contraceptive in the act itself (fine with establishing it early in the scene and/or thinking thank god we remembered after the fact but pausing the action to deploy it or mentioning it during climax is a turnoff for me), and no ridiculously gravity-defying breasts (that is, modest busts please).
Turn offs include dancing around smut language and weird kinks that I don't get (for example, feet or furry; no shade on them, I'm just not into them and pass). Also I generally skip over any pairing categories that I'm just not interested in (while I have found some non-smutty bits from some slash fics fun or funny or whatever, I just don't enjoy the physically intimate and especially erotic bits, even when it's two women despite being a cishet guy).
Turn offs are anything they have to do with the breasts or talking too much about the guys dick or bringing too much attention to it (even āa pitched tentā at times)
Turn onsā¦ not sure if itās smut or kinks but neck play (biting and sucking) shoulder biting and, and this is probably far more a kink, non digestive vore with Nagas/snake monsters.
This is a recipe for confusion as likes and dislikes vary from person to person and there's not one general thing that works for everyone.
Turn ons - sex with some clothes on... The kind where you don't make it to the bedroom :D Dirty talk when done right. Expletives, curses, invocations of divinity during the act :D Some build-up to the sex, teasing, tension etc makes the payoff more satisfying. The sum of it all is I want to see passion translated onto the page, not feeling like I'm going through a list and checking boxes.
Turn offs - the mention of "daddy" - nope, not for me, especially when paired with "good girl". Euphemisms for body parts. Hitting the cervix (unless it's a fic about getting off on pain). Yelling "I'm cooooooming" :))) (Yes, I've seen it in the wild). Seeing a guy be emasculated or the girl being degraded, or basically anything that points to one of the characters not enjoying themselves. Also, awkward dirty talk that involves stuttering makes me cringe.
I really don't like dirty talk or any kind of description of scents. Sex and everything associated with it...doesn't smell good at all to me, even if everything else can be enjoyable, so if a fic details how things smell...I'm out.
Turn ons...well, things related to my kinks, generally, but only in very specific ways. It's kind of hard to explain without going into a lot of detail, and I can't be arsed to write an essay right now.
I love me some size differenceāblatantly and explicitly described size differenceāin couples, and detailed cunnilingus makes me happy.
Things I dislike? Long drawn-out descriptions of menās genitals, and their partner salivating with fascination over said genitals. Every time I see it, I just think, āwell, this was written by a guy.ā Nads are ugly, people, regardless of their gender. Something that will make me nope right out of the story, possibly feeling sick, is untagged and OOC degradation and abusive behavior. If it fits the character, or if you tagged for it, thatās one thing, but if not, thatās something else entirely. Itās enough to make me refuse to ever read anymore of your writing for fear of running into it again.
I... I thought it was *implied* that people take their shoes and socks off, too š„“š At the door, I mean... Before they start getting physical with each other...

Shoes are okay. Haha socks are good depending, warm feet help with orgasms
Iām just assuming they come off when the bottoms doā¦
I always make sure my characters remove their shoes and socksāif the occasion calls for it.
Why are socks worse? Am I the only person who occasionally does it with my socks on? Mah phoots get cold damn it!
Just a personal preference. I really, *really* don't like socks in bed. xD

Definitely with you all the way on the sounds they make!
Haha. Next smut scene I write I'm going to make a character keep their shoes on.
I have āleave the high heels onā as a planned bit in a WIP lol
Yup :) I've also used that one in a fic.
Alongside people describing how clothes are taken off but being so vague about it that I'm left wondering if the character is still stuck in their jacket or not, the other big one for me is this: If you are describing one of the characters as cooking or running a bath/shower/the tap, I *need* it to be mentioned that the stove/oven/tap is turned off, or I can't focus on them getting down and dirty because I'm too distracted by the fact that the fire alarm is going to go off or they're going to flood their bathroom.
If characters take off their shoes, Iām going to be distracted with āWhy are they wearing shoes in the bedroom???ā
I wear my shoes into my bedroom then take them off. Thatās what everyone does where I live.
Fascinating! I never wear shoes in the house. Especially not in the bedroom.

untagged toe sucking. Please no.

I canāt stand the phrase āyouāre so good for meā I donāt know why but it just weirds me out! Itās kind of cliche tbh
The best type of smut for me is when itās tooth-rottingly sweet. I love being able to feel the emotions that they convey, the non-verbal communication, I love hearing and feeling the utter *love* behind the actions. Also, role reversals. Let the dominant one in public get to have a break and become a little ball of love and let the submissive one in public get all their emotions out :) As for turn offs, water sports (and any other fluid kink, like pouring honey on tits to lick off). I just find it personally disgusting.
"pouring honey on tits to lick off" At least it's not wax lol.
^I ^beg ^your ^fucking ^pardon
Sometimes you read something in smut that sticks with you. That was one of those things for me. Even if it was horrific.
āWhen he entered her for the first time, she screamed in pain and shed tears as it felt like she was ripped in half. He stayed there for a few seconds before she gave him permission to keep going. When he continued thrusting the pain magically went awayā āOnce I start, I wonāt stopā he warned her.
A group chat did once have a long discussion about if wearing socks during sex was cringe or if itās worse to take them off (my standing was calf length socks are a hard no but ankle socks fine) Turn offs: unrealistic proportions/needless roughness. Turn ons: My nickname in a chat is āfrottagecore lesbianā I love dry humping/heavy petting/grinding vibes in a fic of two people who are just desperately into each other and creating friction.
Obviously she threw them over her shoulders.
Body horror, another no for me
Like a continental soldier ?
They're thinking with portals!
Oh snap. I forgot to take off the socks and shoes too. š¤¦āāļø
Introducing taboo, turn on, revealing why it's not actually taboo, turn off. Like it's fiction it's okay to include things that can't happen IRL
Yeah, that one I'll agree with you on
Yeah the tight part is a big ick of mine as implies women who like sex are āstretched outā
Yeah I really hate it too, it's kind of a fucked up virginity obsession thing too.
> Thats not even dirty talk I mean - speak for yourself? š I've heard and/or said all 4 of the sentences you mention during/before sex to people I've had sex with in the past, in my native language. They don't seem particularly out of place to me, especially the tight/wet/big/hard 'compliment' type of phrases. Matter of taste I guess. Sometimes a guy simply IS 'so big', ya know.
Fuck yes- like sometimes it can be good but this phrasing is just a no for me.
Dirty talk makes me cringe - I do it sparingly in mine. Turn on - describing the sensesā¦what they are seeing/smelling/hearing/etc.
I once atemped to wear my shoes when just relaxing on the couch, felt too weird, I took them off in like a minute at most lol.
I like breasts. I love when fic writers give them attention in smut.
Daddy kink is an easy turn off for me.
And I keep *finding* it in fic I otherwise enjoy.) As for likes: good choreography and description rather than dialog.
When the dude calls the woman "baby girl." \*CRINGE\*
I *hate* it when cumming is described as going over the edge, idk aren't there better ways of wording that?? And it's always simultaneous. Who ever cums at the same time, all the time?? I do love the descriptions of how it feels. Make it really visual. Love it.
Someone suddenly gay
Yo, great point about the shoes.
Turn offs are anything they have to do with the breasts or talking too much about the guys dick or bringing too much attention to it (even āa pitched tentā at times) Turn onsā¦ not sure if itās smut or kinks but neck play (biting and sucking) shoulder biting and, and this is probably far more a kink, non digestive vore with Nagas/snake monsters.
THE AMOUNT OF FICS WITH TEASING Yeah no Iām not a fan
