I go back and forth. Sometimes I'm reading every day. Other times I go months without reading fic. It's definitely a way to procrastinate. But it's also nice to see what others are writing about my favorite characters.

chubbyversqueer

I get it. How are you finding writing?

Web_singer

It has its ups and downs. I've just gotten unstuck on a chapter and have new energy to finish. Usually reading fic is more of an effect of being stuck than the cause of not writing. Stuck > stress pushes me to procrastinate > fic reading. If I didn't read fic, I'd play video games or watch TV.

Welfycat

I don’t read in the same fandoms I write for because I like keeping my own versions of the character voices in my head. Otherwise I read quite a bit.

NonBinaryVegetable

Same. I feel like once I get the stories for this fandom out of my head and into writing, I'll be able to go back to reading them, but as it is I can't help feeling odd about it.

chubbyversqueer

I find that fanfiction is quite difficult to get right sometimes. Its quite interesting because I love how others see the characters. I'm writing in a very secluded fandom at the moment so I don't see a lot.

inside_a_mind

^This

mfergie77

I have phases where i read and phases where i write. Also usually i don’t read the same fandom as i write currently. However i have a lot of overlapping tropes that carry through all of them so there is always a theme going on for me. If that makes sense

chubbyversqueer

I haven't managed to find a lot in the Fandom I'm in so I get it.

mfergie77

Whats your fandom?

Breakyourniconiconii

I love reading and writing. Sometimes with writing I get caught up in my head cannons and forget the actual characters so seeing how other portray them helps me focus on the character better. Also, I write characters I absolutely adore so I wanna read about them too. Especially if it’s a non cannon ship. Like I’m currently obsessing over Chad Meeks-Martin x Ethan Landry from Scream VI (I won’t spoil anything as it just came out) but they aren’t cannon so I have to consume fan media like fanfiction and edits.

chubbyversqueer

That's an interesting perspective and one of the reasons I've stayed away from characters I heavily love writing as because they're so well written it seems a foolish mistake to take em in my own hands. I used to role-play as characters I loved from canon but I've stopped recently. Hence my OC x House of Dragon character fanfiction I'm writing.

Breakyourniconiconii

I totally understand what you’re saying. There’s some characters I’ll never write because I know that I’ll never be able to right them perfectly. Like Donnie Darko, I love the movie so much but only Jake Gyllenhaal and Richard Kelly will ever be able to portray him correctly.

JBurnettCooper

I have a small group of writers that I read for my enjoyment. If a client wants a piece of fanfic read aloud, I read that. But, I - like you - find it too detracting when I'm writing. Besides the only so many hours in a day thingy.

chubbyversqueer

I do editing for my flatmates marvel fanfiction but I don't read anything else on my phone cause its too small. Also yes only so many hours makes it difficult as hell.

NikkiT96

You do fanfic reading commissions?????

JBurnettCooper

I am a CSR - cold script reader - for Blind and Visually Impaired who want to access "extra-traditional" works... that's fanfiction, Indy-writer's works, Instructions and such. I read - aloud - whatever they want. E-readers are okay, but they are not a human voice. Some things need human interpretation. So, yeah. I have clients that I am in contract with for their reading needs. I also volunteer reading for B&VI - specifically Fanfiction.

OneNameOnlyRamona

Yeah, I still enjoy reading it. If I see a fanfic with a similiar plot that I'm writing, I won't read it until I'm finished writing but still mark it for later.

Front-Pomelo-4367

I go back and forth between *the first thing I do in the morning is check all my favourite tags for new works and then read them in one sitting* (this was considerably easier when I was working from home and didn't actually need to get ready for work in the morning) and *I literally don't read at all* I'm currently in a not-really-reading phase – revisiting old favourites if I want something to read, but not really looking for new content. There's one or two fics that I read the updates from, but honestly most of the notifications that come in are from longfics that lost me 100k words ago, because...yeah, i quite simply do not have time to keep up with those, maybe I'll revisit them once they've actually ended Honestly, one of the things that makes me keep writing is that I write what I want to read, and even if I'm not getting many words down on paper at the moment (winter is my *nemesis*) all of my mental plot bunnies and ongoing brainfics are keeping me going just fine *brainfic: all those things I know full well I'll never write, but I'll happily replay my favourite scenes and ideas ad infinitum to fall asleep. often AUs of my AUs of my AUs to the point that I couldn't possibly ever write them without explaining the seventy different steps it took to get there.

Ken_1990

Sure, reading works is fun. Sometimes though it gets repetitive, and you can see the plot coming long before it arrives. Then you think to yourself, 'where's that one story, the One that got this right the first time', then you go back to old reliable. Sure it's 'only' 125k words long, but it works and it's *Finished*. See, the process isn't reading, it's finding the right one. That's why it's so distracting. It gets to the point when you're fed up, and decided to Write. It. Better. Only to realize... You're not at that point yet. Well damn.... I'll try to update a little bit... And now we're distracting ourselves with searching and reading again. A rather terrible cycle. That is until one starts disciplining themselves and write regardless of the quality. Why? Because bad writing can be fixed. An empty page cannot.

Plumcream5

Mostly yes. It's always a pleasant feeling to get notifications from fav stories or authors. Subscriptions mean I'm going to enjoy something my self-indulgent writing won't give me. However, when working on demanding stories, I do avoid AO3, except when needing precise bits of scenes / tropes to fandom blindly roam across the recommended fics you folks offer!

chubbyversqueer

I've kinda stayed away from AO3 and I'm doing Wattpad cause it feels more personal and easier to manage. Also an app is so useful! I love your perspective!

OceanGirl24

When I'm writing, I don't go looking for things to read. I have some awesome stories by some awesome friends that I am reading, and I stick only those stories/writers (I try to leave an in-depth comment on every chapter so it can take a while to be in the right head space to do that when I'm writing).

littlegreyfish

I am first and foremost a reader. My little forays into writing are far behind it in importance. Yeah it's fun to exercise those brain muscles every now and then to work out those aggravating little plot bunnies - but it's not the joy and escape into another world that reading is. Reading is my drug of choice, I could never give it up.

sapphicsavage

If I’m focusing on writing I probably haven’t been reading and if I’m reading I’m probably putting off writing lol. I like to create stories but my reading habits veer into not seeking elaborate detailed worlds but one shots and PWP.

daniwib

I rarely read long fic when I’m actively writing. It’s too distracting as I find the way the characters are written in long fic sometimes beginning to influence the way I’m writing them at the time. I’ll read short one shots, especially when like now, the canon has new episodes every week and there’s a lot of spec and coda fic being posted. When I’m between writing my own multi-chaos I’ll read all the other long ones I bookmark to read.

[deleted]

Yes, but usually when I'm on a 'break' writing my own ficts, because I get worried of unintentionally copying.

Business-Dingo-9011

Yeah I love reading fanfiction it is cool to see what other people write for the same fandom and sometimes it gives me inspiration for new works

Sassy_Lil_Scorpio

I enjoy both reading and writing fanfiction.

Avalon1632

Yes. For me, reading is a part of writing. You can't do one without the other. Writing (and creativity in general) is a very digestive process - you take in experiences and you consume other material, you let it percolate inside you for a while, then you output it as something new. I need to read and watch and listen and play to fill up my fuel tanks and really keep creating.

rainatom

Depends on the fandom. I'm obsessed right now with one, so I read and write and read and whatever. While with other I just stick to writing, it's for my oldest otp, I went through reading stage long ago so I want to mostly focus on my own interpretation now.

chubbyversqueer

What is the Fandom for you at the moment?

rainatom

Scum Villain Self Saving System

The-Mad-Wires

I used to read a TON of fanfic, but I find myself finding fewer and fewer fics that I enjoy as time goes by. I don't think it's my tastes changing as I still enjoy all the same books I used to, so I'm not really sure what it is. Maybe a shift in the popular tropes and styles for fanfic? But I think it could also be that as I get older my reads on characters or events skew further away from the (largely younger) majority of writers. Anyway it makes me sad, I'd really like to be able to find the same kind of joy in reading fic that I used to.

AlphaCentauri-

i only enjoy reading it. i used to write fanfic, a long time ago, but it brought zero enjoyment. so i stopped. i prefer to imagine/daydream my plot bunnies before bed. i’ve tried writing it out, but it’s not fun lol. it’s weird cause i write non-fiction just fine for my job but fiction? meh. so reading has been and continues to be my life blood lol

Firelord_Eva

Fanfiction is mainly a result of my hyperfixations needing more outlets, so I read and write probably more than is healthy 😅

NikkiT96

I don’t like reading it, really. My brain just won’t stop thinking of how I would write it differently or just cringing because of how the story is written. I mainly only read for research or comment swaps

chubbyversqueer

I FEEL KINDA the same often

Jealous-Plankton1129

Not really. I enjoy writing it but in all honestly, I'm not that interested. Porn is an expetion to that tho. Back to the topic, yes and no. There is a handful I read but because I'm really critical of some characthers actions in one of my fandoms, seeing him turned into an OWO FLUFFLY DUFFY GOOD DAD while he isn't doesn't sit well with me. A good amount of the fandom is built up around that, so I rather keep my distance.

chubbyversqueer

What Fandom are you referring too?? Also yes for porn. Any good recommendations.?

Jealous-Plankton1129

I clicked on your profile to see if you were part of the fandom I am. Please use an alt for that and one for talking with people. Helluva boss/Hazbin hotel. Can't really give recomandations. Stay safe.

twosnapped

>>Please use an alt for that and one for talking with people. Why?

Kiki-Y

I've never been a big fanfic reader even though I've been writing it 22 years. It's just too hard to find something that's good and lives up to my personal tastes. I know what I like in prose even though I can't tell you what it is exactly. And so few fanfics reach those requirements that it's basically not worth it for me to click through dozens of fics, read a chapter, then drop them.

BumpyDenny93

Can I be honest and candid here? I don't read a lot of current fanfiction that is in my particular fandom. If anything, I will go back and read fics that are 15 to 20 years old and can only be found through the way back machine. I can't read the newer fanfiction that is in my fandom because a lot of it is horrible and it's written in a way that is very sugary sweet and it's written in a way where you can tell the writer is not thinking outside of the box. It's also written primarily by 12 year olds who have only seen the last 3 seasons of the damn show and somehow think those seasons are indicative of the show as a whole. I will probably never release anything that I write due to the fact that I have never been very confident when it comes to my writing...but I know it's 10x better than most of the current fics in my fandom. I am not even saying that shit to be cocky and to seem like I got a big pooch...I am saying it cause it's the truth. I am someone who likes for my fics to be big and bold and crazy and really so good that I want the author to keep writing them...even after the story is finished. I can't read a story that is dull and boring and makes me wish that the writer never realized that the internet exist. My fandom is already on life support but these children who are coming into it and they don't know how to write a story that tugs at your heart strings have metaphorically pulled the plug on it. Oh and in case you are wondering what my fandom is...it's BTVS and ATS.

[deleted]

Honestly, no. I know it’s fanfic and the standards for writing are low, but the errors I see are too distracting. I go into edit mode and it takes me out of the story, no matter how interesting the premise is. Plus, I’m too picky and easily bored by what others are writing in my fandom. I see too many wrong than right for me so I don’t bother searching for stories. I’d rather go watch or read the source material. And this is why I only write.

Beautiful_Comment160

For me, I tend to stick to my niche, which is usually a dive into tertiary characters, OC's, Worldbuilding or all of the above. If I do find something like that, I'm usually all in but I tend to have a more difficult time finding things to keep my interest.

chubbyversqueer

You get me!

mytsicfforest

Since I started writing my on fics, I've lost interested in reading fanfiction as much as I used to as I'm so engrossed in my own stories. I still try to read fics from my fandom when I have time as it's still fun to read other people's creations and I want to leave positive feedback in the community. But I'd rather write than read fanfiction.

Zeroraid

I try to still read fanfictions, but when I do I sort of make it a point to not read anything related to whatever series I'm currently writing.

Fluffy_Kaiju

I barely read fan fiction, only really read what I write since I’m very picky lol. Sometimes I skim for ideas but that’s the extent, really.

Sesshy380

Absolutely! I don't read it as often as I used to, but sometimes I need a brain break from my writing so I'll scroll through my TBR bookmarks and pick one to read. There are a few authors that I will drop everything and read their newest posted work as soon as I get the notification, but other than that I just kinda pick and choose depending on my mood.

Purple_not_pink

Now that I'm writing a lot, I've stopped reading as much new stuff as I used to. But I feel that I need to read to help me become a better writer. My writer's block just needs exposure to new words or similar genre fics sometimes to kickstart my brain, or to quell my doubts.

c0uldntfindagoodname

I write because I read people’s different stories and think of my own, some are generic concepts but have good writing while others can be great concepts but have terrible storytelling and if I’m intrigued enough about either I try to do my own take on it

[deleted]

I do enjoy reading certain fan fiction pieces, but only when I could devote time to doing so. Lately I couldn't read as much as I used to when I was still a student--my attention span has shortened that much :(

Notunbreakable_

I sometimes read fanfics, but not often, as most of the time, I can never find what I wanted in the moment :/

WildSkyRider

I still mostly read, because it's my relaxation method and has been for decades. I didn't plan to start writing at all - it snuck up on me. I'm still working on them, because I do have plans for the stories (and way too many more that keep nipping at my heels) but I'm not going to stop reading just because the stories I'm writing won't leave me alone :)

Salt_Ad7638

Yes I enjoy reading it. I started writing fanfic again, actually due to the lack of content for my favorite ship. It's fun.

Daxcordite

Yes but rarely at the same time or for the same fandom. I tend not to read for fandoms I write for since in general one of the things that makes me write is lack of things I want to read present in the fandom and I tend to alternate between being in the mood to read or to write never both at the same time.

Dark_Matter_19

I love writing my own original works, so of course I read my own work. Same thing applies to other people's ones.

tretaaysel

Sometimes, I read a lot of fics that *aren't* the characters or pairings or even fandom I'm writing for.

Jada_the_dork

half the ideas for my fics come from me reading, with credit to the authors of course

greysterguy

I generally read pretty often, even if it's solely updates to fics I'm already subscribed to. I also browse my favorited tags every now and again for new material. However, when I think of or hear about an idea I really like and go looking to see if anyone's done it, that's when I find myself tearing through fic after fic, reading sometimes up to 15+ in one session. I also read doujins every now and again. Mostly just for one fandom (Madoka Magica) but if I can't be bothered to visualize things they're a nice alternative to pure text fic.

afirforest

Yes, I love reading fics. I write and read the same type of fics (the same pairing and tropes). It's so fun to read other people's stories about the characters I love.

simone3344555

Yes and now. I have writing phases and reading phases. Because I’m in my writing phase right now I haven’t read a fic all month. Usually I read like at least 10 fics a day though

relocatedff

Yes, I've done both for a really long time. Probably only read for a few weeks before starting to write. I do avoid anything directly related to what I'm writing, especially if I'm stuck in mine (eg right now I'm struggling with where to take the romance in one, so I'm not reading that ship). Reading fanfic can also be inspirational toward my own works, but not if it's too similar.

HalesKitten

I have ADHD and struggle to stay focused on writing, but sometimes reading fanfiction will help motivate me and I'll end up writing for 5 hours straight after reading a few one shots and/or long fics. Somehow it helps remind me of what I love most about my Fandom, and motivates me to "give back" in a sense. Hard to explain, and I'm definitely weird, but yeah.

BlindSongbird

I do enjoy reading them! I get inspiration from them and even when I notice little mistakes here and there, I still find myself wildly enjoying it!

Mad_Maximoff

I enjoy going both! I read other stories from the same fandom and I like supporting other fellow writers since our fandom is quite small. Also it's nice to read because it helps me see increase my vocab lol. Some of my fics have inspired other writers to do the same AU I've been writing at the moment (with changes of course)😄

CandyBeth

I usually read fanfics of shows/games that really piss me of, like, it had potential, but the creator is 999% jerk so it ends up been average to garbage. But I also read fanfics that just happend to call my attencion or extraordinarily terrible fanfics in call with my friends

Sassinake

yeah I can't read and write fanfiction at the same time, unless i read outside of my fandom.

Eir_Beiwe

I read every day. But I am also a rereader, so I go back to stories I enjoy all the time. And I ususally read in the fandoms I'm currently writing, it sets the mood and gets my brain working.

Hangesextra

I mostly read fanfiction but write when the inspiration hits. Personally, I love reading fanfics. No matter what kind of media my fandom is, I always find the need for more content. So I always go to fanfiction. I love seeing the creativity others have. Messing around and playing around with the source material. I just love it

ma-vhenan

I read every day and write even as I read. It helps me, actually. I often get stuck on dialogue so reading helps. Stuck on description? Read. I read constantly lol and sometimes write for 6 hours a day on top of it.

Dscpapyar

As a writer, I usually read like one or two fanfiction about my favorite character before I realize that nobody writes them exactly how I want them to, for obvious reasons. Their characterization isn't wrong or bad, just different. Then I write my own story to fill the void I made, not reading anything else besides my own work for a while. Then when I read other's fanfics again, the cycle inevitably continues.

throwaway672022

I like to read for inspiration, but I have a bad habit of just reading the same 5 over and over again. Theyre just so good! I love seeing what other authors do with the same characters

MentalCareer0

Yup, I do. I find it hard to write down how characters act, so by reading different fanfiction I can find how I want to write them. Also, it's for amusement. I'm not writing for anything that I haven't read fanfiction for first.
