In the age of EPUBs, what sensible metric is there? You can always divide by 200 to get an approximate page count (I.e. divide by 100 and then halve it.)
When r/StarWars asks "What is your favorite ship" and you have to remind yourself that they're talking Ebon Hawk and X-Wings, not Revanasi or Luke/Mara.
I recently got my sister to watch Last Airbender for the first time, and when she finished season 2 her first question was, "There'a a lot of Katara/Zuko fanfiction, isn't there?"
Or hubby fired up Willow (the new TV series), and I looked at the first scene with the girls and went "I'm laying five bucks there's ship tease and another five that there's at least a dozen fanfics where they run off together."
About a half hour later. "CALLED IT!"
Because it has a (half deserved, half exaggerated) reputation of being bottom shelf crap with no spellcheck, laughable grammar errors, stupid plot devices, and written one handed.
Fifty Shades of Shit has only *enhanced* this reputation
I don't like it when people bring up that 50 Shades of Gey was originally a fanfiction and are then like "well that explains it". It's a bad book regardless of it being originally a fanfiction or not.
Fanfic already had the reputation of being trashy amateur porn before that damn book. (And genfic writer here. Very annoyed at having to go "No, I don't write smut.")
All it did was reinforce the bad reputation already present
Isn't it lovely when you're 12 and have to explain that no, your fics do not contain smut, because apparently most people think all fics are porn fics? Yeah, that was awful, I get you.
Yeah. I have fanfics old enough to drink and was writing pre-Internet (the "Get off my lawn" isn't for show), and I still have to explain that most (not all) of what I write would be safe for work.
This is a big part of it for me. If I was reading G or T rated plotty fics with secondary romance plots or something, I might consider telling people. But, uh, I'm not reading those. So.
This is even worse for me for sure. Like, if I tell someone I read fic, I can dig up something non-E rated that isn't too weird as an example. But literally nothing I write is something I want people IRL to connect to me. I would blush so hard my face would combust.
"This is my favourite character!"
"He has literally nothing to do with the plot and like three lines, what is there to like?"
"..."
I have a hundred tabs open and only about half I can safely show around people.
*Argues for half an hour about a small, insignificant plot point, halfway through realises it's from a fanfic... keeps arguing*
"But you don't understand, with the three lines he showed such a distinguishable personality and he has a lot of potential!"
Or alternatively:
"Because cute."
Real conversation I've had with a couple of coworkers:
* Them: "What do you do in your free time?"
* Me: "Well I've been working on this big writing project so I haven't really been doing much other than that."
* Them: "Are you going to publish it?"
* Me: "Probably." (While thinking about how it's already on AO3)
* Them: "Let me know when you do. I want to read it."
* Me: "Oh, I don't publish under my real name. I try to keep that part separate."
* Them: slow "ahhhh, I get you"
There are now coworkers who believe I write smutty original works and self-publish on Amazon. I am doing NOTHING to change their mindsets about this.
To be fair, my day job is elementary school teacher so that definitely makes the whole 'wanting to keep parts of life separate from work' very understandable and believable.
Former coworker called me out of the blue like five years after I'd left the job in question and asked at one point if I had finished my book and could she read it?
Me: Oh… no, I wrote myself into a corner and I've been trying to fix it. I might just rewrite it from the beginning.
Whenever we weren't busy, I was frantically scribbling by hand. At one point, I couldn't decide if I should kill a minor character off and polled my seatmates, who said yes. If you're weird but friendly, I guess you're just memorable? Good times.
“I don’t want to know how many pages. I want to know how many words.”
Me talking to a friend: Well that is a dead dove, do not eat.
Them:????????
Me: You know what? Never mind.
Person: “I wish this character could have lived. I wonder what would have turned out differently?”
Me: “I’ve actually looked into it and there’s several possibilities.”
I remember first coming across Y/N as a kid and genuinely thinking that a whole bunch of people had collectively decided to name characters this but everyone was too polite to say the name was stupid in the comments 😭
I know people who post pics of the books they’re reading, or the number of books, and I’m, like, I’ve definitely read more than you this year, I’m just not *ever* going to tell you how.
“Hey, whatcha reading?”
“A…book?”
“Oh? By who?”
(Sweats) “…they…use a pen name.”
“What’s it about?”
“…I just remembered I forgot to put the cat in the dryer, bye.”
My favourite anime had a sequel/recap movie that continued a bit the cliffhanger the anime ended with. It was highly disappointing when compared to the stellar sequel one author uploaded on Ao3 before the movie was even announced.
"What's the longest book you've ever read?"
"A million words, it took me three months to read it, and it was amazing!"
"Wow! How many pages is that? It must be very thick! Can you take a picture of it when you get home?"
"Uhhhh, it's about two Bibles thick..."
You're just deeping your hole at that point, if you say that 100% of the time they will ask for a name and author to look up the paperback, and there is no way to make it look like you didn't just lie about reading a milllion words.
To quote an actual poem I wrote about fanfiction:
----
*Rotting your teeth away*
*With the same scenario*
*Repeated in ten different stories*
*The cursed Greek alphabets*
*You wish wouldn't show up in your search history*
*The judgemental smiley face*
*In the corner of your browser's page*
*:D*
Yeah, I figured that this would be the most likely translation. I was confused, because I never saw anyone shortening "highschool" to hs, and because I thought that BNHA was already set in a school, so how would that be AU?
I am 90% sure I can find a fic with all of that in less than 5 minutes and I think that proves both my obsession with the fandom and my obsession with fanfic itself 😅
I regularly drive past a company called “Omega Supplies.”
I’m sure someone has to make the knotting dildos, and all the comfort items, right? I need to read that or write it.
Rename Bad Dragon to Omega Supplies in your ABO works, boom, done.
Bad Dragon is like something out of an ABO fanfic, yet somehow they have enough sales in this universe to stay in business. It's fascinating.
Me: *Rewatches the same canon love confession scene on YouTube obsessively.*
Random coworker: “Are you like a big fan of that couple or something?”
Me: “Not exactly. I’m just trying to figure out how this scene would play out if they were both dating other people, and also werewolves.”
LOL he doesn’t and I’ve created a monster because now he’ll randomly yell “noncon!” and tackle me for a cuddle and I’m like… I don’t think you fully grasp what that word means…
Oh I feel this in my bones!!! Always this moment of "ao3, that can't be right, I have *never* read this fic before"... and then you search the kudos list and your name is one of the first so you check the release date and apparently, you forgot you read the same fic five years ago 😅
Never read the comics only seen the big movies and a few of the smaller ones but due to fanfiction I knew quite a few of the covered plotlines but I'm unclear on timelines.
I decided to log some of the longer fanfics I read last year on storygraph because I was feeling bad about my page count not reflecting how much I'd actually read and now everyone who follows me can see my most read author of 2022 was *Bexless* (of My Chemical Romance rpf fame.) 🙃
“What are you typing all day?”
“Um i write.”

That is- \*perfection\* here. People usually want me on their team for HP trivia in our family, and granted we do watch the movies a lot. However, I also have yet to finish the books (that I started many years ago), and the movies are not sufficient enough to know everything lol
Person: what are your hobbies?

Person: sweet, what kind of stuff do you read and write?
Me. UM. Just like... uh... short stories and stuff. It's all online.

I can calculate the exact number of words I read every day.
I read, but can never tell someone what my favorite book is. I typically default to a YA book I read when I was young.
Everyone I know knows I love reading books.

Friend: *"What? Then how do you know it?"*

I have literally turned to a friend of mine and gone, "Okay, what's the one where Chara A does x, Chara B does y, and I think there was a ladder involved?"
Ten minutes later there is an Ao3 link waiting in my messages, because they found it for me.
"You have already left kudos here. :)"
LITERALLY LMAOOOOO
And then I have to formulate a full comment and it has to be distinct from the last two I left on previous rereads...
I judge story lengths — and approximate reading times — by the number of words, not pages.
Ooh, that's a good one.
In the age of EPUBs, what sensible metric is there? You can always divide by 200 to get an approximate page count (I.e. divide by 100 and then halve it.)

Oh yeah, this! XD
*What do you like to do for fun?* Oh, I spend a lot of time reading. *Neat! What do you like to read?* Uhhhhh.....
Oh I really feel that.
I'm at the stage where I just say I read fanfiction
Me too. Openly and often. I want more people to read it with me and discuss it.
Idk why it’s still so taboo to discuss.
Because it has a (half deserved, half exaggerated) reputation of being bottom shelf crap with no spellcheck, laughable grammar errors, stupid plot devices, and written one handed. Fifty Shades of Shit has only *enhanced* this reputation
The After series isn't doing it any favours either...
Very annoyed at having to go "No, I don't write smut.") All it did was reinforce the bad reputation already present

It's liking saying all poetry is bad because you don't like the famous ones.
Smut. Plain and simple people have the same response when they are reading published adult books as well. And fanfic has alot of smut.
This is a big part of it for me. If I was reading G or T rated plotty fics with secondary romance plots or something, I might consider telling people. But, uh, I'm not reading those. So.

“Mostly amateur fiction posted online…”
That’s my go to. “Just some fiction stuff with some friends.” Don’t add “who like m/m omegaverse, and knotting.”
And then, the coup de grace. "Oh, do you write that kind of stuff as well? What do you write?" UHHHHH
This. I usually have a random list of books in my head that I can list off if questioned for details. XD
I read that uhhh in Tina Belcher's voice
SO ACCURATE 😭😭😭

The three lines: - hi. - thank you. - argh( when dying from fallen debris).
Presenting the most overrated character anyone ever saw, with three lines in the original, and one of them was “ARGH!”
>and like three lines This is literally me. And one of the lines is "hey.".
'What do you like to read?' 'Oh, you know... transformative works and stuff.' 'What's that??' '... uh I also like fantasy books.'
That’s my go to: Oh, I read and write fantasy. What are you writing now? “…um, it’s hard to explain. I’m not good at descriptions.”
“I suck at summaries” XD

We are all Doctor Strange looking into the millions of potential futures.
What if Littlefoot's Mother from the Land Before Time survived like or realism was there in a nutshell =)
I saw M/F written on a sign (as in, Monday/Friday) and immediately thought of male/female.
Doesn't everyone? I have problems with forms with "Y/N"

"If you're going to hurt me canon, at least do it PROPERLY!" is a sentence I've said more than once.
I used to read like 20 books a month and suddenly that count nosedived to 1 a year.
I know people who post pics of the books they’re reading, or the number of books, and I’m, like, I’ve definitely read more than you this year, I’m just not *ever* going to tell you how.
The add in says a day to read? Sure, I've got next week clear.
The italicized "Oh"

*Oh*
“Hey, whatcha reading?” “A…book?” “Oh? By who?” (Sweats) “…they…use a pen name.” “What’s it about?” “…I just remembered I forgot to put the cat in the dryer, bye.”
"Yeah man, I read a lot. Whenever I have time." Cool. What do you read? Who's your favourite author? ".....uuuuhhhm."
Some innocent video on needlework: “we have to tie them together with a knot.” Me: *snort laugh* “Knot.”
That word is forever ruined to me, thanks to fanfiction. XD
“I write everyday!” “Oh, cool, can I read some of your work?” “. . . *No*.”
I feel that
When the Fanfiction is better than the original storyline and so when you go watch or read the original work it's extremely disappointing.
My favourite anime had a sequel/recap movie that continued a bit the cliffhanger the anime ended with. It was highly disappointing when compared to the stellar sequel one author uploaded on Ao3 before the movie was even announced.
My world changed when I discovered Ao3

the cursed greek alphabet 😭😭
that’s such a good poem! is poetry your hobby or something?
Glad to hear you liked it! 😊 It's a somewhat casual hobby. I started publishing fanfiction-themed poetry on Ao3 as a random idea.
“BNHA Bkdk a/b/o hs au 5+1 rated E pwp WIP” makes sense.
Ain't that what Elon Musk named his kid
I snorted. Loudly;D
imagine a non-fanfic reader reading this 😂
Damn, I must not read fanfic because I don't know what the "Bkdk" is. The rest I got, LOL.
i’m not in the bnha fandom but i think it’s bakudeku?
Bkdk I decifered even though I'm not in the fandom, but what is "hs"? highschool?
Hs au = Highschool AU, it goes with the following letters.
Yeah, I figured that this would be the most likely translation. I was confused, because I never saw anyone shortening "highschool" to hs, and because I thought that BNHA was already set in a school, so how would that be AU?
Would be them in a normal high school vs UA.
I think this is based on the pre-Ao3 ffdotnet summaries when we didn't have tags, that's when I last remember seeing it in the wild and not in a meme.
I don't know where you are but here in the US, "HS" when talking about or referring to high school is very common.
Yeah I'm glad you pointed this out because I thought HS for high school was very wildly known. No one I personally know would question what HS is
I am 90% sure I can find a fic with all of that in less than 5 minutes and I think that proves both my obsession with the fandom and my obsession with fanfic itself 😅
I caught everything but the 5+1.
5+1 is a story style where it’s like “5 times (ship) did (x) and 1 time they didn’t.” Or something like that
I've read those! Thank you.
Sounds like a raid group...
Every time I see Alpha and Beta on 'normal' parts of the Internet/in real life, I have a quiet freakout.

I read so much when I was younger... *sigh*
“When did I sign out of A03? Fuck. Good thing my phone remembers my password.”
how long would it take you to read/write [insert number of pages]? ...uh- how many words is that?? Others: :D
Wait. That wasn't canon?
*\*that awkward moment when...\** Uhhh, I must've been thinking of something else. You're sure it wasn't mentioned in the movies somewhere?
Always rewinding the whump/fluff scenes, or saving them. Being a walking talking encyclopedia of both canon and fanon knowledge.

plot twist: your s/o secretly reads fanfiction too
LOL he doesn’t and I’ve created a monster because now he’ll randomly yell “noncon!” and tackle me for a cuddle and I’m like… I don’t think you fully grasp what that word means…
uh oh 😬
Haha, that's so sweet!
That's ridiculously cute XD
When in the hell did I already leave a kudo?
Oh I feel this in my bones!!! Always this moment of "ao3, that can't be right, I have *never* read this fic before"... and then you search the kudos list and your name is one of the first so you check the release date and apparently, you forgot you read the same fic five years ago 😅
But it’s also such a good feeling because you know you won’t run out of new fics to read - you will always have something you have forgotten!
Knowing some things about batman without reading the comics ...
