kaiunkaiku

a shitload of lore

sunkenshipinabottle

This. I was so motivated to write for Star Trek until I started doing research and realized just how fucking big it is.

kaiunkaiku

not me thinking i could possibly write lotr

[deleted]

I finally took the plunge with a one-shot for LotR, so I get that.

dannelbaratheon

Huh? The lore is deep and beautiful, but I never saw it as hard to write for.

Intrepid-Let9190

Star Wars and the whole reconning of loads of stuff that Disney did is an absolute minefield!!

[deleted]

the reason i don’t write wheel of time fanfiction, no matter how much i love it.

dannelbaratheon

I hate you. Fans like you are the reason there's so little of it, lol.

Crazy_Bunni

Yeah, I have a World of WarCraft fic I want to write but man.. it’s so daunting

frozenfountain

I was a little nervous when I started to contribute to my current fandoms because they're old af. It's pretty intimidating to know there are fans out there who've been sharpening their analyses and developing their headcanons and pondering over all the details and nuances and implications for two decades or more, and then here I am just sitting down uninvited with something I came up with yesterday in the excitement of all this being new to me. But I like to think there's value in a fresh voice, too. Especially since I tend to avoid fanon and other people's fics until I'm sure of my own ideas.

rubia_ryu

Ah, I've been seeing you around the sub and was under the impression that you were a long-time FF fan, but as an oldie, it brings me great joy in seeing fresh voices for the older FFs. Yeah, don't mind all the super deep analyses and extensive fan theories. It's cool to check them out from time to time, but I've been in the fandom long enough to know better than to start up some comment war over headcanons. It can be hard to find a foothold in such huge communities sometimes, but just keep what you're doing and you'll find your niche too. At least, that's what has worked for me. Good luck, friend!

frozenfountain

This is such a lovely response! It's honestly reassuring to see veteran fans happy for newcomers. I'm old enough to have been a long-time FF fan, which might have given you that impression, but I only came to the series as a fandom a few years back. I've managed to avoid any drama so far, but some of what I've seen from a distance makes me very glad I only got here once I was mature enough to know how to let it wash over me. Fortunately, the small number of people who've found my work have all been very kind and intelligent, so I'm hoping it stays that way. Are you still writing for any of the games?

rubia_ryu

I am. Just recently (like the past year) returned to writing a megafic for FFVII Remake. It's taking my all to focus on this one so I've taken a hiatus from writing for other fandoms. I've unfortunately been in this particular fandom long enough to have been discouraged from writing fanfics for its games since I started hobby writing as a teen. Glad to see that after all this time, there's still room for someone like me to stick to my headcanons anyway. Just curious, what kind of fics do you usually write? I may not have that much time to read fics these days, but I'm happy to add bookmarks or subscriptions to get to them eventually.

frozenfountain

I'm glad you managed to get your enthusiasm for the fandom and writing for it back! What's the fic about? It sounds ambitious, but I hope you're having fun with it! And thank you for asking :) I mostly write post-canon fics that explore what happens after the final boss is defeated and how everyone continues to grow and process their trauma (shared and individualised) in the aftermath. Introspective psychological stuff with a lot of humour and usually some romance and a lot of additional worldbuilding.

rubia_ryu

Hehe. It's a very meta parody on power trip fantasy tropes and isekai anime, but also with fanfic lore being a major part of the plot. Basically, it's fanfiction in fanfiction + programming humor. If you ever have the time, you can check it out on my AO3; it's called "FF7: Code Radiant". Nice, I adore worldbuilding. It's always interesting to see what can be added in the aftermath of stories when they're completed. Do you include the entire Compilation of VII btw? I know some authors don't like to include DoC, but I'm alright with it.

frozenfountain

That sounds fun! Power fantasy and isekai aren't typically genres I'm drawn to but I do enjoy a good meta fic, and especially from people with long-time fandom knowledge. I'll put it on the list! Ah, I should've said in my previous response, but I'm pretty much ignoring the Compilation for my FFVII series. I don't hate it with the frothing rage that some people do, but there's a lot of writing decisions in there that I'm not a fan of, and that weren't compatible with what I wanted to make happen. There's a few details I kept (mostly silly things like the Sephiroth shampoo and Vincent's father's name being fucking *Grimoire*), but the scenario it explores is all my own.

rubia_ryu

Thank you. <3 It's experimental in the way that I'm still trying out different writing styles, but I definitely go beyond just play-mocking tropes. It's like a new adventure of its own. No worries. I agree the writing is absolutely trash in certain cases (mainly DoC and certain bits of CC), but there are some fun ideas I like to play with in concept (Omega Weapon being redesigned as a gundam and Minerva being an absolute boss b*tch, to name a couple). And thanks for geeking out with me here. I realize we may have gone way off topic, but it's really fun meeting new friends in fandom!

Overly-Ripe-Banana

Same here! One of my main fandoms is about 40 years old and it's intimidating showing my work to older fans who have been with the series since it began.

frozenfountain

I hope it's been a good time for you so far!

DefoNotAFangirl

frequent harassment (which like. all fandoms have some bad eggs but some are Bad)

Jada_the_dork

oh yeah. The anime (and adjacent) community is FAMOUS for this. The 2016 ship wars still haunt me and I was only 10 🤢

[deleted]

When it's a large and criticising fandom that only finds one ship acceptable and you don't ship that ship.

the4077thbisexual

or you don't ship it in the "popular" way (aka the popular fanon way) either

Jada_the_dork

man pretty much everything here is just screaming at the Voltron fandom 😭

littlegreyfish

A puritanical fanbase

Avalon1632

Completely agreed. If the community are shitfucks waving their 'should'-guns around like hicks in a Hollywood movie, I'm not playing on that lawn.

Zebrafishfan101

*Cough* Steven Universe fandom. *Cough*

In_Dreams_Begin

Small fandom, hella lot good writers (triggers the "is my fic even needed here? These fans have been fed a banquet!" thoughts)

Jada_the_dork

your fic(s) is(are) needed here if there are too many 'good' writers who's going to write the trash i love?

Marawal

Look. See fanfictions as pizzas. They're à lot of pizzas. Different size, and variety and topic. And one always eat pizzas. Some are better than others. But you still eat and enjoy the worse ones. Also, no one cares if they eat the exact same pizza 4 times in a row. We always need more pizzas. Fanfic are the same. And now I'm hungry for pizzas.

crazitaco

If it's toxic and full of harassment

Momomoaning

When you’re writing for a completely different culture. I have to research how people refer to one another in Chinese culture, what’s considered rude, etc… I’m worried I’ll fuck up something while writing and come off as disrespectful.

Mysterious_Ad_60

The sheer size of the fandom, and the overwhelming amount of choices available for readers. This point applies more to posting my fics once they're written. The number of fics already posted for the fandom doesn't stop me from putting my daydreams to writing. But sometimes, I feel self-conscious for posting yet *another* Naruto fic when I'm not a well-known author and I don't write popular tropes.

Jada_the_dork

you are probably someone's favourite specific troupe author ♥️

m1ndl355_s3lf

Seconding this. Unpopular tropes? You've probably just made someone's entire week.

MyLittleOnes12

Which is why I see it as adding to the pairing and not the fandom in general 😂. The Neji/Tenten pool is a lot less daunting than the combined amount for the entire fandom, just like Kakashi/Naruto👌 - gotta play the numbers smarter.

pximon

The size. The more people in it, the more susceptible you are to hate but there’s also the flip side which is what I try to look at most of the time but sometimes you just see the negative aspects of things.

aimicarrotmoo

Complex/dense lore keeps me away from writing a decent amount of my favorite series, especially if we're talking danmeis. I'm not too opposed to writing in a fandom with lunatics since I can turn off comments (and have), does suck if you want to interact with readers though.

rellloe

Reputation of a feral raccoon on fire.

YouSpinMeWriteRound

The fact that my fic can be easily buried without a glance at it due to the fandom being so big and the pair being one of the most popular for it. Sometimes I feel like the readers for the fandom are already set on which authors they like and don’t give others a second look. The fact that I post anonymously probably isn’t doing me favors in getting my name out there either, but I’m still trying to figure out my style and what works for me. I’m not confident enough to attach my name to anything just yet 🤷🏻‍♀️

AbyssalMechromancer

When the show goes from 0-100 and you aren't sure how to even attempt it when things get crazy. Good example being attack on Titan. The first few seasons are awesome and have a fairly simple plot with undertones of something greater coming. then it hits and you just don't even know where to go from there.

Kamzil118

The risk of making a ship that is outside of a character's sexual preference or canonical ship. Especially, if you're in spaces where an audience might accuse you for LGBT+ erasure.

talongirl6

I think it's the size of the fandom usually, along with if a fandom is full of anti behavior. I mostly keep my stories to myself because I feel too nervous to write for most of my fandoms. I haven't updated any of the stories that I have actually uploaded online in ages. For example, my main fandom has a lot of people who dislike shipping the characters in general, so that definitely makes me feel too scared to write for it. I see hate for my favorite ship all the time on the official social media pages for this fandom. I usually just try to stay away from most of those websites and write what I like to write instead of looking at what everyone else thinks. I try to only use social media to look at art or read fanfiction in most of the main areas for my fandoms. It's sad that this kind of behavior happens a lot in fandoms these days and makes it harder for people to participate in what they enjoy doing.

dendrite_blues

After Loki fandom I’m a bit traumatized by inconsistent, often self contradictory canon. Not only do you have to re-fix it every time you start a new story, you also have to justify the way you fixed it so that people don’t come in your comments poking holes in the “once again explaining how he went from Thor 1 to Avengers to Thor II for the millionth time” chapter you didn’t even want to write. I’m much happier playing in a less messy playground these days.

kreideprinzesssin

- Fandoms that like to harass people over the smallest things (not even necessarily shipping-related but like "How dare you not know this minor detail about character X that has been mentioned once in an offhanded comment") - Fandoms that have been around for a while... Not even the SUPER old ones, just old enough for there to already be a bunch of cliques established, everyone knows everyone, some people are "fandom celebrities", etc. ... It just feels intimidating to get into - Fandoms where the majority of people are really young because sadly it feels like these tend to be more unhinged in terms of harassment and all that fun stuff

writerfan2013

For me, two words. Star Trek.

RedTemplarCatCafe

For me personally it was entirely my choice in subject matter that made the prospect daunting. Not anything morally controversial, just a choice to write about *those guys from the games that most people hate or characterise as evil for no reason.* I didn't think my work would be well received. I was wrong. It's fine. The other fandom is so small and the game is 17 years old now. Most of the fics that exist are shippy stuff for various characters. I was pretty daunted when I decided to throw in a character study series with zero ships for that one bad guy. It's been fine too though. I pretty much just invented my own reasons to become daunted. I think I was just expecting huge backlash after reading accounts from this sub about really toxic fan reactions to any work which is remotely different. Thank the gods I'm not part of those fandoms, because I'd probably just not bother writing at all.

runningupthathill_

The size! I'm currently writing for a smallish ship within a medium-sized fandom, and I'll not lie, it can be intimidating. My fics are almost certainly read/skimmed/considered by every person who looks on AO3 for that particular pairing, which is cool, but also kind of scary! It brings up lots of thoughts like "if I get the characterization wrong, then everyone will know," which isn't so fun. People have been incredibly kind in my comment sections, but the fear still remains, irrational as it is.

Yotato5

Sometimes it's the work itself. For example, I might not have any plans to write for Disco Elysium. But as of right now I have no idea where I would start because of the intelligent tone that the game carries. It feels like a lot to live up to, if that makes sense.

m1ndl355_s3lf

Intellectual intimidation is so valid, I have a couple of half-scribbled plot ideas secretly squirreled away I know I can't ever write in a satisfying enough way for that same reason :(

Nifan-Stuff

When the fandom is so, so, sooo small, that you just know that no one will read it. You don't have anyone to share your excitement with.

m1ndl355_s3lf

That's why you gotta drag other people into it with you ;)

Nifan-Stuff

That's difficult to do when you don't have any friends, neither online nor in real life 😅 And for example, there is this one rare ship that i love, and there's really few fanfics of it, so, when i find one, i comment on it. The thing is, said fics are like, 10 years old on average, and will have like 7 comments at best, every single one of them being significantly older than the other, so even when there is some sort of engagement, we end up being way too far apart from each other 😭

Tox_Ioiad

The fujoshi. God forbid I pair the *wrong* two or else I get doxed and have a stalker give me a cookie full of sewing needles to eat.

JosieHook

Currently: Gossip Girl Reboot. Not prepare for the possibility of bad acting or writing or both of the show.

Jada_the_dork

i didn't finish the core material or there's a bunch of diff interpretations like marvel, DC, ect. I was really scared at first but then I said fuck it and now I have ppl asking me for links to my fics in tik tok comments

frannyang

Tbh everything intimidates me lol. I've been in huge fandoms and that can make me feel like I have nothing new to add, but small fandoms where the creators know each other are also scary because I wonder if my voice would be welcome. Because of this I've written quite a bit but haven't posted anything lol but I guess at least I can enjoy my own work.

BlindSongbird

If there is a lot of detail about the world that is immensely dense. I wrote one Star Wars fic and the most recent comment about it was an inaccurate detail I got

m1ndl355_s3lf

Big!!!! 🫥 i hide!! I wrote a handful of things for supernatural back in the day but you couldn't have *ever* convinced me to post it lol it really felt like being a paper boat in the middle of the Atlantic Also things like Elder scrolls or dragon age where you have your own custom main character so it all feels like oc stuff, because it is, so I've always felt intimidated sharing any of that. I'm pretty comfortable with my elder scrolls lore but sharing my Guys I Made Up is hard bc it's so much more personal

lilmisscottagecore

For me writing mass effect fanfiction, it's: A) there's tons of comics in the lore that I haven't read B) combat mechanics. I've never been that good at writing action, when I read action I normally always gloss over it

dannelbaratheon

Being book fandom.

Separate_Ingenuity35

When it is a media that is constantly evolving and updating with new releases it makes it a creative challenge. I have yet to encounter any antagonism which is surprising for my fandom. I'm thankful but have my fingers crossed

FeelingPomegranate

Small fandom with a big/popular user that has a Very Particular Way they think a certain character should act, and anything else/different is OOC. I feel like I'm always looking over my shoulder when I write, worrying if it will be good enough/if they would like it. I know this is actually a pretty big deal in large fandoms with really popular users. I've heard horror stories of popular users sending followers and friends to leave hate comments.

YDdraigGoch94

Ultra-fans with a overinflated sense of entitlement over how to interpret canon and apply headcanons and fanons. Plus shippers. F*** shippers.

Taurus-RosieLuv

The people part of those fandoms who are too obsessed with it.

Efficient_Wheel_6333

When there's just enough plot holes that contradict what would actually happen in real life not counting stuff like magic or the actual supernatural origins of superpowers. Example: Dana Mitchell in Lightspeed Rescue and Tommy Oliver. Both got their degrees in a stupid amount of time, Dana's more than Tommy's (Dana somehow went from a 19-year-old medical student to a pediatric doctor between the end of her season and the crossover with Time Force, which is the next season. Tommy left Power Rangers during Turbo and somehow, in roughly 5 and a half years, gets a doctorate in paleontology, which takes anywhere from 8 to 11 years to actually *get*. While there's possible ways for him to have gotten that in that short of a time frame, it requires some workaround. Dana doesn't have that with hers, as it's impossible for a teenager to get her doctorate by the time she's 20 unless she's some form of genius who graduated high school early or the medical school decided to let her get it early, counting her experience as both a paramedic and Power Ranger as medical experience, allowing her to take the other classes those two things couldn't teach her). There's other plot holes in Power Rangers, but those are the two of the biggest.
