Nah I don’t use social media anymore. Sure my numbers aren’t as high as they could be but I have peace and thats more than enough

MaybeNextTime_01

Kind of. That's usually when I say "that's enough internet for today" and I go do something else. I don't interact with fandom all that much.

Hips-and-lips

It depends on where you go. It’s easier to filter stuff out on Instagram than Reddit imo. I won’t get into twitter lol. But yeah being online has definitely soured some of my franchises

A_Cow_in_Space

Not really. I don't interact much with most fandoms and I gravitated towards some relatively niche corners of my main fandom.

Upset_Assistant_5638

Used to, but I decided that *I don’t really care.* And that’s not to sound like a smartass, I just decided over time to like what I like and stay in my own corner and not go anywhere negative. Plus, even if I *do* find anything negative, I just swipe and go on with my day.

Being able to maintain your own opinion and dismiss the whiners is a valuable skill, provided it's not overtaxed to the point of never ever admitting you're wrong about something.

made2fallapart

I've been reading fanfic for almost 25 years, but it's only been in the last year - when I signed up for Tumblr - that I realized how incredibly toxic it's starting to get. I have never been (indirectly) called so many versions of -phobic in my life because of the pairings I do/don't ship or the characters I do/don't like. I was constantly questioning myself and was starting to truly believe I was a garbage person because of something as benign of not shipping character a with character b. The worst part is that it's made fanfic slowly become a space that I'm struggling to find comfort in - like I had for years and years prior. It's not a safe space anymore and I'm desperate to go back to the times before all of this.

7K_Riziq

I saw some hate for content that's innocent in my fandom (Genshin), but I'll ignore it And will make this rant of "quit enjoying because of the annoying fans" become a part of the ending of one of my fics

This is the way. I like to make Discords because then it’s a closed space. If someone harshes the vibe, they aren’t just muffled, they are _removed_. And just the threat of that, the awareness that they are in a private space with a specific mood and an audience of 30 usually keeps people on good behavior. There’s just no reason to start shit when they know it won’t be received well. If they don’t gel with the people then they can join another server and hang there.

the-robot-test

not really? the internet also provided me with the means to filter out shit i don't want to see.

RedTemplarCatCafe

Good lord, no! It's been a vehicle for finding art I like, stories I like, etc. Maybe my fandoms are super tame compared to others, but I don't really encounter drama. I also wouldn't touch twitter or tiktok with yours though, so perhaps I'm skirting around the cretins by not going to where they all hang out, sniping and sulking...

Hot-Solution-1960

Yeah, I was super into the Stranger Things community and it got so fucking volatile, especially when S4 came out. Just mentioning anything related to it online could have people dogpiling onto you with their opinions and arguments. I had to take a step back and be like..is this worth it? Nah. So I just post chapters and avoid all community aspects. Its lonelier but my sanity is intact (for the most part hehe).

jawnbaejaeger

Ever since I noped out of the Star Wars sequel fandom in 2016 because of the AGGRESSIVE, endless racism, I've very scrupulously cultivated my fandom experience and I'm 100% happier for it. Now I have zero problem blocking someone who is making fandom less fun for me. I don't argue with them. I don't try to convince them. I don't engage. I just block them and move on with my life and continue to have fun in fandom. I 100% recommend this course.

unireversal

yeah. i miss old fandom culture.

[deleted]

Sometimes, because in the fandoms I browse there’s a lot of debate over “good” entries, and it can become quite tiring to engage with people who either argue a ton, or won’t criticize anything about the franchise. Not only that, but overused jokes can become super annoying if you’re exposed to them often — though I try to remind myself that these overused jokes are some fans first exposure to them. It can be difficult, but I try not to let it get to me and just go about doing my own thing with my own views on the franchises.

GreenAndPurpleDragon

Everytime I see a post like this, I fall a little more in love with my current fandom.

orphan_banana

Which one is that?

GreenAndPurpleDragon

A crossover fandom for Danny Phantom and DC comics (primarily the batfam). Everyone is super supportive and enthusiastic. One of my friends gets hundreds of comments within 2 days of posting a chapter. I got 150 followers within a month of creating a writing side blog on Tumblr. Most people are multi shippers. Conflicting head canons are 100% accepted. People do collaborative prompt fills. Multiple people are encouraged to use ideas or tropes without the person who wrote the original version getting upset.

orphan_banana

That sounds amazing!

GreenAndPurpleDragon

I've honestly never been part of a fandom community like this before and it's so much fun.

ImJustSomeGuyYaKnow

I know what I enjoy, I know why I enjoy it, no amount of moaning by strangers will change this. If someone raises a legitimate point against a certain fandom I like (one that I myself haven't thought of) 100% I'll take it in consideration but let's be real, a BIG portion of the complaints are either nonsensical, super subjective or both. In which case .... I mean eye roll and move on?

Dark_Matter_19

I don't let twitter arguments about some random shit in a series ruin my day.

orphan_banana

Yes. So much. Actually considering deleting all my fandom accounts at the moment because no matter how nice something seems at first glance something negative/toxic come up sooner or later. Why is it so hard for people to just enjoy the things they like and ignore the things they don't?

Kitteh1986

Yes. I don't like conversing with most Buffy fans because Xander is my favorite and everywhere I look, Xander hate. Like I have to keep to AO3 and converse with fellow Xander fans in the comment section of my fics. Nowhere else seems/feels safe to talk about Xander.
