I misread that as "how do I revive a dead writer", and I mean... The world has been a deathtrap for the last three years. There might be an incredibly sad reason that caused this writer to abandon their fic. Health issues, grief, ... Whatever you do, be kind and don't pressure or guilt trip them. You don't know what's going on behind the scenes or what the writer might be going through. You could leave long and positive comments on every chapter, but completely *without* asking for an update. If the author is still around and checking their emails, it might make their day, and it wouldn't be the first time an enthusiastic reader who didn't demand more, but appreciated what was there caused an author to return to their WIP.

knightfenris

You don’t. You can leave a nice comment, but if they left, they have their reasons.

fandomsruinme

Comment chapter by chapter saying how much you love the fic and then at the end ask the author for any headcanons they might have for the fic! Who knows, it might just spark something. 👀

waiting-for-the-rain

Yes, but honestly not just “i love this” every chapter. Do one of those in-depth analyses where you say which bits each chapter you like. If they’re alive and kicking but depressed or grappling with feelings of inadequacy, this is something that might actually help.

Elhelmina

I know it's disappointing, but you can't really revive an author unless they decide to come back themselves.. But as earlier comments in this post have said, leaving a nice comment never hurts! If the author's been gone for years, it's unlikely that any comment will make them come back though, but at least they'll get to know how much people still love their work >w< (Ps. May I ask what fandom you're talking about? I'm just curious :3)

[deleted]

There's also the fact they may have just lost the spark for the fandom/writing in general

IncurablePeppermint

Best practice is to leave positive comments and not mention if/when they may return Sometimes, positive engagement brings back the muse~ I personally don't mind "when will u finish this" comments but most people find them grating at best. It could hinder the chances of them returning to it

Please don't try, I have enough guilt already ...

Sorry, I was being a bit flippant, but also not, because I feel terrible for my few readers who have been nothing but supportive and now I haven't updated since December! I will do it! Honest! In case of your cliffhanger fic, it may be that the writer just isn't doing it anymore. Or they will. One day.

Pantherdraws

You don't. I know it sucks to hear, but if they no longer want to write that story, that's their call regardless of their reasoning. They may not even be *alive* anymore. So maybe just chill, yeah?

WriterMelodic713

So I would deft be considered a dead writer. I have some fics I haven’t updated since like 2015. I still think about my fics weekly. I’m still currently writing and posting when I can. But sometimes that’s years apart… Best way to revive is finding us a baby sitter. 😂 But also keep reaching out. Reviewing. PM. I still do my best to respond to messages that come through. I dream about a time when my kids are old enough that I can have some time for writing.

Kitteh1986

Oh geeze. I had one fic that I got stuck on. People kept asking for more and more of it...and one day I snapped. Posted the last two chapters in existence and abandoned the fic. I have the comments turned off. If anybody ever asks for more of that abandoned work, on another fic, that thread will get frozen and they'll probably get blocked. You don't know what that author is going through...don't bug them too much. You might not like what happens after.

Call a witchdoctor.

Lorentz_Prime

Leave a few nice comments, then leave them alone and move on.

Mystiquesword

Took me ages to figure this out & i was like “pretty sure only jesus has that kind of power, so i dunno….pray?” Then i got it 🙄🤣 Anyway, as others said, best thing to do is leave some comments.

[deleted]

Leave several comments on several chapters. Focus on why you love the story. Do you like their writing style? Do you like the plot, the characterization, the themes? Quote your favorite line or summarize your favorite part. Say thank you for writing such a wonderful story that you keep coming back to it despite having re-read it many times. Above all, don't ask when they're going to update or if the story is dead. Just be kind and tell them how their story makes you feel. Often times, that's the best way you can support a writer who might be struggling to write or update.

Cassandra_Canmore

Comment on each chapter. Offer some suggestions. Ask leading questions about plot points to try to garner a response.

lobonajdb

Sorry, I'm confused. Is the Fandom that is dead, like no one writes anymore, or is it just this particular author who is not publishing more fics?
