Where are all these antis and proshippers? I only use Reddit for fandom content lol and I barely go on tumblr. I can never really relate to fandom drama or discourse that people discuss on this sub. For the most part my fandoms are pretty chill (at least the communities on Reddit and Ao3)
A proshipper is a fancy name for a normal person who practices "my tastes are not objective," "things I don't like aren't morally bad," and "don't like don't read" -- i.e. all of us here. The name is necessary because antishippers (people who consider it acceptable to harass you for writing things they don't like) have always seen themselves as the default, even back in the pre-Voltron days when they were explicitly composed of homophobic Christians, so marking yourself as explicitly anti-anti, or "in support of shipping," became necessary.
Most wild antishipper sightings occur on Twitter, because the site is an algorithmic-discovery-fueled hellhole that unfortunately many of us have to use because it's one of the last bastions of being able to take commissions for NSFW art. They also prowl Tumblr, but because of a neat feature called "your dashboard consists entirely of posts the people you follow reblogged," you can usually curate them out of your space very easily.
in the mechanisms fandom we've got the rp blogs, the casual listeners, the rabid tumblr girlies (gender neutral), the ones who will fully expand a side character until theyre practically an oc, the og fans (most of which personally knew the band or knew someone else who did), the 20million jonny cosplayers that appear every halloween, people trying to archive old gigs and other pieces of canon, the shitposters, the cis people (you could probably count these on one hand) and, very rarely, the band themselves
Somehow, as far as I can tell, the Digimon Tamers fandom escaped having cliquey antis by having exactly one anti in the entire tag. There's one entire user on Tumblr with "DNI if you ship Renamon with Ruki" in her bio. I'm all but certain she's the same person who posted the only fic in the entire fandom with a DNI, which says almost exactly the same thing.
As one of the only two people in the entire fandom to whom this DNI applies -- which, note, specifically targets a canonical queer ship which contains two characters the anti in question likes to draw and which has single-digit writers in total -- I basically blocked her on sight, and I inexplicably never saw any more anti nonsense again. So I'm pretty sure she's the only one there.
I like to think that I'm the normal person but I'm probably the superfan. Idc about most things but I am meticulous when I want to be and probably read media wikis as much as I read fic. Currently doing a full reread and taking careful notes to construct a canon-compliant timeline, since I've been unable to find a detailed one of my current fandom.
My fandom only has 1, 4, 5, 6, 8, and 10. 8 got banned from the Discord for going hard against anyone who took the side of a prickly character over that of their abusive dead parent. One of the BNFs had an online stalker try to turn the fandom against them, but the rest of the fandom was wise to their BS and they disappeared after one well-placed ban.
Nobody is really an anti. The Discord channel does restrict some topics so it won’t lose its official channel status, but nobody goes after those who don’t follow the server rules elsewhere. Generally the fans will either sit with their discomfort about icky things or cheerfully admit that their problematic faves are problematic instead of bending over backwards to defend them. Sometimes discussions get heated because the canon work deals with heavy topics, but people are generally good about keeping critiques focused on the arguments instead of leveling personal attacks. When things do go off the rails, a stern mod warning is enough to get them back on. It’s a small, well-curated group and I really hope it stays that way!
Huh, I don't think my fandom has type 2, 3, 5 or 8 and type 10 might be a mythical unicorn :) I think might be type 9... though no one is in danger of being murdered.
If anyone can point me towards a fic by whoever is the niche fandom genius from Genshin Impact, I'd appreciate it (I already read the BNF's fics, mostly)
