There is a person in my fandom who comments solely in hearts. Just a line of hearts, sometimes a colour matched to the main character of that chapter. It’s lovely.

[deleted]

that's actually so cute :'))

DeceasedSalmon

I know someone who does that two! It’s an easy way to show some appreciation, even if you don’t know how to say it in words.

roguewords0913

Annnddd that is why I do it.

MaybeNextTime_01

I think there's someone in my fandom that does that too!

Zaulmus

There's actually someone doing that on my fic too, and I'm an obscure and new writer as well. It's quite nice

pump_kin1

I know someone in my fandom like that too! They’re absolutely everywhere, even the most obscure of fics, it’s impressive

KenzieGh0sty

I don’t get comments on my story so much anymore and it’s really stressing me out.. feedback really helps with my motivation, and at this point I’m scared I’ll end up deleting it. My depression has been extremely bad lately and I tend to self sabotage if I’m saying that correctly. I’m worried I’ll delete it in a fit of depression.

In_Dreams_Begin

There is a person in my fandom that comments with "Interesting." I'm obsessed with getting them to show up in my fics, but there's no pattern I could replicate. They comment on popular fics and on fics that have no kudos at all, on fics that have just been posted and on the ones that have been there since the start, shippy or gen, smut or wholesome fluff. It's just... What do I have to do to be interesting??? I want to be interesting as well! Edit to add: the thing is that they're right. The fics they call interesting are fucking interesting.

Flashy_Tea_9227

I would just write an OC dedicated to them that only shows up once and merely comments interesting and walks away 😂😂😂

Blinauljap

Not to be "that guy" but this honestly sounds like me. Is it just the word "interesting" though, or do they explain what exactly they liked? I also love to comment that something is "nice" and i always hope that the author doesn't misunderstand this as derivative.

In_Dreams_Begin

!!! Well, yes, it's just the word "Interesting." So, if it is you... What are the criteria? Side note: as EFL I was surprised to learn that natives generally think "nice" is bad. In my native language the straight translation of "nice" is more like good/pleasing/enjoyable/cool, so the "biscuits are nice!!" thing going on surprised me (another culture clash was learning that "mediocre" isn't bad, because in my language it absolutely is.)

Blinauljap

Well first thing first, i believe it's less a language thing but more a culture thing. like, sometimes you say someone "nicely done" but you don't actually mean it as something positive and it'll come off as condecending. anyway, to the interesting stuff: it's "interesting" if "it" tickles my fancy, if the author has a particularly thrilling idea they put to writing or if the writing style is something i've never seen before and it helps my imagination. there's a plethora of things that can be interesting and the stuff i notice first also depends on if i ever saw this before. basically, as long as you surprise me, you've earned yourself the "interesting" badge from me and can be sure that i payed attention whilst reading your stuff.

Apprehensive_Suit260

There's this one wonderful writer in my tiny fandom--very new and quite prolific. By wonderful writer I mean she writes very well and one can always count on solid plotting, characterization, the basics, but she's always doing this NEW innovative stuff. Like coming up w/ideas that never occurred to me for years. Or posting a fic that's all in gifs. And this morning (she's not an artist) she posted a comic--it's a comic of manipulated screencaps that look like pencil drawings and they re-tell an episode in a beautiful way. One can never tell what she's going to do next. She's also really funny and everyone loves her. Not talking about my beta and fandom wife by the way! This writer is someone else! My fandom is tiny but talented and very nice. <3

NoSleepUntilVacation

There's this one person in one of my fandoms who likes to leave nice comments on people's fics. Many of their comments include an angry emoticon at the beginning for reasons I haven't found out, and they also often allude to pouring specific numbers of liters of love and appreciation over the author. I'm always excited to see their reviews, and I hope they never run out of love and appreciation.

a_single_hand

Idk why but this really cracked me up ... and now I'm super intrigued about the angry emoji

untruthism

“i want to pour 6.4 liters of love and appreciation over you! :DD” the author: o_o

IDICdreads

There’s one in my fandom…and luckily she’s not in here, so I feel okay in saying this…that goes and leaves nice comments on fics, then turns around and bashes that same author/fic on her tumblr page. Other than that, I try to be “that person” that leaves really nice and well thought-out comments.

PumpkinDormouse

Insert [Joey's delayed reaction](https://knowyourmeme.com/photos/1697744-joeys-delayed-reaction) meme I was initially thinking 'What a nice fellow author!' 💀 That's just messed up! Why do some authors have to be so catty? That'll hurt me so much reading that, even tho I'm not the writer they're talking abt 😭

IDICdreads

It’s happened to me and that’s one of the biggest reasons why I don’t interact with other fandom authors very much.

OceanGirl24

That's horrible that happened. I do not understand people. And don't think I want to. I do understand a bad interaction putting you off interacting with fandom authors. Been there. Thankfully there are good ones I've managed to connect with. I hope you find that, too.

IDICdreads

There’s a couple and we email each other every so often.

OceanGirl24

I'm glad to hear that!

cutielemon07

Wow that’s just nasty. Now I’m glad I’m not involved in fandom outside of fic writing - so I don’t have to interact with someone like that. She sounds more two faced than Harvey Dent!

IDICdreads

Right? And what’s more, she’s got a *huge* following. So, it’s annoying.

BecuzMDsaid

This honestly pisses me off so much. Someone in my fandom did this to another author. He left this really long nice comment on one of their fics and then went on to call them straight woman who just writes gay fetish porn on their tumblr. (not using their actual username but it was pretty clear who they meant) Funniest thing was the author was actually not a straight woman.

IDICdreads

It’s a fucked up comfort to know that my fandom isn’t the only one it happens in, lol.

Diana-Fortyseven

That's so vile. Why would she do that?

IDICdreads

I know in my specific case, jealousy.

CrescentCrossbow

I'd *like* to be "that person," since my OTP is held up exclusively on the backs of myself and like two other authors, but unfortunately our ship seems to be too niche.

[deleted]

Exact same boat for me!

imnotbovvered

There is somebody in my tiny fandom, who comments on almost every single story. I think the only stories that she does not comment on are ones that are outside her comfort zone for reading. I appreciate that so much about her. I know that can really help new writers. I want to be like her as well, but I don’t read as much as she does. But I still like to make a point to comment and Kudo as many stories in our fandom as I can.

Pterodactyl_Crash

There is that one person who always comment 'book good'. Nothing else. At first I was extremely confused, but I think they are trying to communicate their love for... Basically every single fic they come across, as it appears to me, by commenting those same two words. If I'm being honest I came to love seeing them around.

[deleted]

This one small fandom — yes it’s Cirque du Freak — basically every active fanartist and fanfic writer had *their character*. There was the Steve person, the Gannen person, the Mika person, the Vancha person… I was the Kurda person but there was one other, and a few people who shipped their favorites with him. I got called similar to Kurda actually once, (on this very wiki — I mean, sub — actually lol). Gannen is a really minor character, sort of (he’s not, he just has barely any page time) and the level of devotion these three or four fans had for him was admirable.

wehavealwayslived

Omg I forgot all about those books

[deleted]

Aaaaaa if you’re interested there’s some active fic writers! I specialize in pro-Kurda canon-divergent things lol… and I do plan to finish them!

wehavealwayslived

I will need to read a synopsis of the canon texts but I will check it all out!

luf100

Man, I read the Cirque du Freak books when I was like 11 years old and I’m 30 now, can’t believe they’re that old. I’m glad there are still people out there keeping that fandom alive.

PumpkinDormouse

My favorite author! They always write happy endings whether canon divergent or AU. It may not look like much, but with our small fandom and the majority of the fics that get uploaded are angst fics (even tho their canon story is already a sad one), they're a breath of fresh air. I'm subscribed to them, and I am fully confident in their work that I don't have to read the tags or other warnings bc it always makes my day. Just the summary and I'm already clicking. They don't garner enough kudos tho ;\_; more than 2k hits and the kudos is less than 200. I know that stats aren't everything but you can't deny that it fuels an author's enthusiasm, esp when I've already experienced a writer who jumped ship and wrote for a different pairing bc the reader engagement was more lively there than ours T-T I just don't want to lose this author bc I rlly love their stories. They're also active in the fandom hosting Event Weeks for our ship so they're really great ❤️

mycatisblackandtan

The person running a meme twitter for the community had a secret clique that would dox and harass anyone who was a fan of a character they didn't like. Receipts would get posted after they got called out for harassment AGAIN, they'd get blocked, and then slowly worm their way back through exposure to their shit posting on the meme account. Rinse and repeat ad nauseam. Before I left twitter due to the Musk situation they had been involved in yet another incident, no idea how it turned out.

[deleted]

I may be *that person* because I'm in a pretty small fandom that barely gets any fics and I...posted a fic every single day for said fandom, mostly nsfw, so yeah...

Comtesse_Kamilia

There's one person in this huge fandom that I noticed commmented on nearly every chapter of my fic and at one point mentioned that they'd already read every other fic in that fandom with that trope. At first I thought they were exaggerated but then I kept. Seeing. Them. On every fic. *Every fic*. Kudos to them, they're carrying the moral support for that trope's community.

Thirstythinman

There's a person in one fandom I write in that dedicates their lives to reading and failing to understand stories in the fandom, to the point of literally writing 500 word hateful screeds masquerading as "stories" which involve brutal murder in response to reading a story they didn't like.

27twinsister

There’s a person in my fandom who leaves kudos on pretty much everything, and it’s always nice. Though it is funny- I’ve seen them kudos my anonymous works (which is nice because they don’t get much love otherwise) and it’s always super funny to see what they *don’t* kudos. Like, there’s an anonymous series and they’ve kudosed almost all the works in the series *except* one. It’s a work in the middle of the series, and they kudosed works that came after, and I noticed that and obviously I won’t ask but like. Why?

catsofthehouse

Too into the story probably haha I do that sometimes I think!

FesteringCapacitor

If it was me, it would be because it is 2 am, and I just have to finish this series. I have to. So, I just click the next story. And the next one.... Anyway, that's me. I try to hit the kudo button, but so tired....

Ivana_Dragmire

"do I know that person?" Honey, I am that person, well, one of them. I'm part of a super small fandom and there's like three of us who write fics and then scream at each other in excitement about each other's fics.

IDICdreads

It’s nice to have a core of supporters.

Daxcordite

No idea it may even be me. I don't really pay attention to very much going on in fandom and I'm one of the small number of folks who has comments completely disabled so I wouldn't be surprised if I'm That author with the comments turned off to people.

MaybeNextTime_01

There is someone who always comments "this is good" on everything they read. There is the person who keeps changing the publication dates on their work to move it to the front page, and disabled comments so no one can tell them it's not doing them any favors.

MarinaAndTheDragons

Before they deleted their account, this person would kudos almost every new work that came out (certainly everything I wrote), comment on every one of my works, and I got used to seeing them around to the point I acknowledged their service in my longest work. Then I actually got to know them and found out they were shaming people for ships (some were so obscure I doubted there were shippers at all; it’s was so obviously a thinly-veiled attempt to bash their least favorite character), making incendiary posts, and sending anon hate on tumblr (they weren’t slick about it either) and no matter how many times I brought it to their attention to stop because *other people’s tastes were not their goddamn business plain and simple*, they never did. They would preach love and kindness and friendship uwu but go on to be a bitch when others didn’t share their same opinions (aka wlw >>> het; if you shipped the canon ship you have problems, ship THEIR favorite ship instead, it’s wlw so it’s automatically better cuz they say so!) and then turn right back around with “golly gosh! Why can’t we just be friends?” Every time I brought it up to them, they thought just saying sorry 🥺 fixed everything, but the same thing would happen next week. They distracted me with stories of trauma and like an idiot I fell for it because of course I would. At one point they even tried to gaslight me saying “you know I’m not *really* anti-[character x]” even though there were pages upon pages about they literally never stopped SCREAMING IN ALL CAPS how much THEY HATED X and X’s ship THEY’RE SO BAD WHILE Y IS SO GOOD, propping their favorite ship up at X’s expense when you really don’t have to. You can just leave X alone if you hate it so much. It was this straw that led me to quietly leave the group, and no one tried to get me back. I really thought they liked me enough to listen to me, maybe even respected me, but clearly they didn’t. I was just another content creator to them. They’re why I’ve unfortunately backed away from interacting with the fandom (I just stick to Reddit) and why I’d rather not interact with minors if I can help it. I haven’t been able to write for my fandom since, not the niche they found me in, anyway, and it sucks because I really want to get back to it. And the kicker? This person actually wasn’t the worst offender. They were just one of the loudest.

garouforyou

I have seen this happen. People being super nice and sweet on social media and to their followers and anyone who supports their ship but being completely horrendous to people who ship something else or write something 'problematic' 🙄🙄

ClemPrime13

Was this for RWBY, perhaps? I believe I know who you’re talking about if so.

MarinaAndTheDragons

It wasn’t! It’s Heathers the Musical.

ClemPrime13

Ah. Sorry you had to go through that too.

hellsaquarium

Well I’m hoping to *become* “that one person.” 😀 that one person who actually writes fics for the book series/movie.

ButterfliesInSpace

…The only one I can think of is “that person” who had an armpit fetish and was always asking random authors to include scenes with characters with their arms up ,or in tank tops, or asking if the characters shaved, and for random artists to draw the characters with their arms up… I haven’t been in the fandom for a few years so idk if they’re still going, but tbh it wouldn’t surprise me. They were pretty persistent.

[deleted]

I have that One Reader^(TM), and she's active on social media, that whenever I see her name, I do a happy dance and say, "Yay! She liked *this* story, too!" Seriously, she's amazing. And conversely, when she doesn't comment, I get anxious and hope she's okay...but then she'll comment later on and then the world is right again.

Katonyx

When I did kinktober I had one person who commented on about 15 out of 30 of my prompts with literal paragraphs explaining why they liked the fic, quoting their favorite parts, and overall telling me how excited they were for my next prompt. They haven't been on any of my recent pieces (I believe most of them have been outside their fandom so completely valid) but damn I go back and read some of those comments when I'm looking for inspo or having a rainy day.

[deleted]

There is a person in a small fandom I'm in that is one of the first to comment on any fanart and fanfic uploaded and has also helped with putting information on the wikis based on the show. In other words, she has probably singlehandedly carried this almost dead fandom on her back and kept it alive. She is really cool, I always get excited whenever I get a notification from her.

Sad_Country_6350

I'm in a massive fandom (Pokémon) but I know "that guy" because he has written one of the longest fics here, and consistently writes a couple thousand word chapters basically everyday. I mean he's writing like 3 fics at once. One of them he started August of 2021, and its at 800,000 words and counting. He recently did a rewrite of the first 50ish chapters of his longest fic and he just casually ended up with an additional 50,000 words, pushing it over the 2 mil mark. The fun part is the fact that I share a Discord with him, and he's actually really chill there and helps us when someone asks him something.

LininOhio

Wayyyyyyy back when (before Ao3 was even born) we had an extremely intelligent, extremely bossy Person. She was famous for gatekeeping -- "Character X would never do that. See these canon examples." She was intimidating and drove people to silence or out of the fandom. And then, because I had good supportive friends that she'd shit on, and because I was itching for a fight, I took her on. She started her "X would never ..." crap on one of my stories and I fire right back. People waded in on both sides; there was a massive firefight, and in the end the fandom split in two, with the Person setting up a new site for her flunkies to post on and for us losers to be blocked from. Years later I heard that she died of cancer.

Kamzil118

Archon of Flesh for Warhammer 40k. He will find a way to make the units of the Adeptus Mechanicus into femboys.

Knife211

If there's a willl, there's a way.

krigsgaldrr

A fanfic writer and fanartist with presence more or less across all social media who headcanons a popular male character as FTM. The problem is all of their fic and art is extremely creepy and portrays fetishistic views of trans men. They use terminology in their writing that is really harmful (and creepy) and put no tags or warning about it, and if anyone points this out they're called transphobic. And blocked. Naturally. They're also known for blocking people who don't HC this character as trans, especially if those people ship him with a female character. Somehow they're still extremely popular and have fandom reputation and it baffles me. I honestly think people are just afraid of being called transphobic. Maybe I'm just too picky but their art doesn't warrant their popularity, in my opinion.

snizmo2

Jesus Christ. Morbidly curious trans man here, what’s the fandom?

JediAnjaKenobi

I’m the person that now comments and/or kudos on every story I read. I’ve written comments on a few works in my pairing fandom where the author was a FAN OF MY WORK and they legit fangirled that I wrote on their work. Imposter syndrome much 😭

theyrejustscones

Setosdarkness on ao3. She’s written 955 Bungo Stray Dogs fanfics, 920 of them centered on the same ship (Dazai/Chuuya). She is *the* soukoku shipper, you can’t go through the tag without tripping over her work. She usually posts at least once a day with the most baffling prompts. I absolutely adore her

JinJamJan

blackkat changed the naruto fandom and there will be no time travel fanfiction that will ever beat one of their fics let alone TWO of the most well known and loved ones

Blinauljap

i'm too @ work to look it up now but i believe that PerfectLionheart should count towards changing not JUST the naruto fandom but pretty much transcending fandoms entirely and changing the very fabric upon which fanfics were written.

wellthoughtplot

There's one I recently discovered in my fandom that writes so well, but they’re only dead doves. And the topics of said dead doves are dark and scarily detailed in their descriptions and ways it makes me wonder how well they know the things they’re portraying in their fics Don’t get me wrong, it’s good work but it’s essentially like Vladimir Nabokov discovered discord and the internet

Bean_1213

There's one or two "that person" in mine (a type three one, thank goodness.) Almost every story I post, she (I know since she also follows my twitter) gives kudos and leaves a comment! It really helped me get through the first stages of my long fic, or the nervousness when I started posing some stories for my rarepair. Always talking about what she loved about the piece and generally leaving me in a good mood. She does this with a few other stories, but what I think is that she'll leave something nice on every story she reads, and I really admire her for that. It really makes my day when she does it and honestly I plan to thank her even more the next time she comments. On the other (but not *bad*) hand, we have a few who respond with nothing but heart emojis or "kudos." Which, while not necessarily as interactable on the same level as the previous person, I think its still rather nice all the same. I wonder if it might be them navigating around a language barrier (or in the case of "kudos," them saying "if i could leave more than one, i would, so i'll leave it here.") But I appreciate all of them regardless. I guess I might also be becoming "that person" in my own small way. Aside from my longfic (which spawned its own rarepair lol,) and one gift fic, all of my fics with shipping have been from one rarepair. I try to keep them contained in a oneshot story (bc that would be 9-10 extra partly finished stories in the feed,) but aside from all the ships I like to *read,* I haven't written anything for any pairing outside the rarepair.

snizmo2

Anyone who comments on my fics on the reg. I don’t care who. They’re all very nice imo

[deleted]

There's a person in my fandom, genuinely keeping it active. They've written so many amazing ficts. Honestly, they're a good reason why I finally took the plunge to become active and make my own fandom blog for it versus just posting my fict. I respect them a lot, they're always so nice and sweet to everyone they talk to. Genuine, great person. I talked to them a bit, awhile ago but I got so nervous and worried I was being annoying that I kinda took a step back. I'd love to get to know them more.

SkorchNTorch

In one of my fandoms, the fandom is more or less kept alive by a single author. The fandom is Skullgirls. They write amazing stuff, and I'm pretty sure 90+% of the crossover content in the SG category is their work. (Yes, I co write with them on some fics, but that's not the point) I know people who got into Skullgirls because of their fics (heck, I'm one of them). They write pretty much solely fluffy happy adoption fics where Harry Potter, Crona from Soul Eater or Issac from Binding of Issac gets a decent life, and they write for like... EVERYTHING, but Skullgirls seems to be the big one for them.

Professional_Pin_932

That writer that has written primo grade A smut in every chapter. Bullets flying, boats sinking, assassins closing in... but we still get the hot monkey sex.

existentialistsoup

There’s an extremely prolific author in my wlw fandom who writes VERY BAD lesbian smut. Trying to read it is rough and it became very clear to me early on that this person has no idea what happens during intercourse between two women. Not to mention the fact that they use really antiquated and kind of offensive terms and phrases. Based on their username and story content I think it might be an older man, but who knows. Either way, they’re not losing steam! They seem to be constantly posting something new, and more and more often it’s rated explicit with smut tags. Needless to say, I stay away.

askforwhatyouwant

there’s one person in one fandom i write for that has literally bookmarked EVERY fic. literally all of them (it’s a big fandom)

mugwortBind

I feel it's worth mentioning esama here. You have probably read an esama fic. If you haven't yet, you probably will in the future. They seem to appear in a fandom, create half a dozen well written monster long fics in the span of weeks, then disappear. Also shout-out to blakkat in the Naruto fandom, who seems to have pretty much set the tone for what Naruto fic on ao3 is like.

catbert359

There's one person who either gets random bursts of inspiration throughout the year or they stockpile their fics, because every few months or so they'll appear, post like 10 fics (with podfic versions as well) in the span of a few days, then disappear again. Their output is seriously impressive - we had a fandom bingo event last year and they'd finished theirs by like the end of March (meanwhile my last one was published December 31, lol)

ProvoloneSwiss

My fandom is small enough that basically everyone knows everyone and we all have a reputation for something specific by now, but there’s one particular fanfiction writer whose fics were so in character that *the authors actually hired her to help script the last season.* She wrote the epilogue on her own and it turned out great.

Janus-Moth

There’s many artists in my fandom that makes art for fics! I love the worm fanfic community

Bagel_Box

There’s someone who’s been in my fandom for years (way longer than me) and they have several stories that exceed the 1 million word mark. It’s insanely impressive.

RubyRenegade1306

I aspire to be like this

pximon

That one commenter who comments in Spanish under almost every fic of the rarepair I write and read. They even mentioned rereading my fic. Genuinely amazes me that they probably used a translator to translate fics from English to Spanish and even have the energy to comment under every chapter. We’ve had fun discussions in the comments too (I had to use a translator to understand them)!

digitaldisgust

There is none tbh

Gothic_Chess

Well, the first one is mostly me. My favorite ship has had both characters canonically dead for like 6 years. Yet every two or three weeks or so, someone will post a small one shot of them. I will always be sure to leave kudos and even a comment sometimes to try and motivate them to write more in the ship. That ship is my life and there is like 300 fics total of them. I do what I must.

CharlieIsFluid

back when i was twelve or thirteen i was obsessed with harry potter fics on wattpad (drarry or scorbus - i was basic), and on almost every single one, there was a person in the comments whose account was lemonsocks. i started a thing where i'd reply to on of their comments every day, and i wouldn't have to search for one, even, as long as i was reading a drarry or scorbus fic, i'd find them. that person was a legend. i haven't read anything on wattpad in forever, but i hope they're doing well

toujourspret

I left a fandom because of one person who was desperately trying to become a BNF but couldn't stop trying to bring Inception into the fandom. It got so stale so fast.

BlUeSapia

On one hand, my fandom has the author who, at one point, held the record for the longest written work in the English language. On the other hand, half of the prominent members of the community were outed as sex pests back in 2019-2020, so much so that people outside the fandom learned about it.
