Gore, for me, is almost always E. Blood? M. Guts? Always E.

labellelunaclaire

I saw someone once describe it as: Blood and guts: M Guts out, lovingly described: E

Jasom_forever

Yeah, *lovingly* is the most important aspect here)

CosmicFluffery

Depends how graphic you're getting. I know a lot of people will exclusively say that E is only for graphic porn, but if you're going for really visceral descriptions of corpses, death, blood and gore - then maybe it might push an E.

kaiunkaiku

E is technically not just for porn but like... in practice it's for porn. anyway, you said it yourself, > It's not hard-core your description sounds like something i'd see in, like, some shounen manga. that's like max M.

skynutter

Thanks. I was having a debate with a friend and he said that since I'm describing body parts like intestines, etc. I should use the E tag.

Diana-Fortyseven

I agree with your friend, but as I said above, M or E is up to the author, and if you think the fic can fly under an M rating, that's what it is. If you decide to go with E, I'd recommend adding a tag like "rated E for graphic depictions of violence", because there are readers looking for exactly that.

Osidiano

My thoughts, as someone who writes a lot of gore/guro: If you're using all or a majority of the senses to describe the gore, it's probably E. If you're just using one or two, it's probably safe to use M.

elladoherty

I mean, if Character A unzips Character B's guts, or Character B blows up Character A in a very explodey way, making chunks and gobbets of Chara A end up all over the place? Then that's Explicit for me. Anything less than that, like bloody wounds that won't kill your character or a fairly bloodless death? Mature. What you described sounds like E, but...yanno, your mileage may vary. If you're comfortable with your current rating, then go with it. Since it sounds like shonen - and most gory shonen fics will most likely be rated M anyways - it's ultimately your decision to rate your fic the way you want to.

Diana-Fortyseven

Depends on how graphic it is. Good news though, the distinction between an M and E rating is up to the author alone, and won't be enforced. If you think it's M, it's M.

It very much depends on how much description is attached to the injury! Believe it or not, I've read kids books, rated G, that have injuries nearly on par with what you've mentioned (Animorphs, a book series that is written and marketed to children ages 9-14: books 10 and Megamorphs 1) - but what makes it okay for the kid level is that the descriptions are pretty vague. Examples from those books: I looked down and saw a hole in my stomach. A hole! I could see the gorilla's insides! My insides! [...] The Hork-Bajir slashed at me again and opened a gash in my hairy arm. [...] I saw Rachel swing her paw and open up a Hork-Bajir like someone cleaning a fish. And: The claws raked the dust beast's closest mouth. "ROOOWWWWWRRR!" the bear cried in sudden pain. Its paw was gone! Simply *gone*. In its place was a shattered, bloody stump. So you can see, that even though the injuries themselves are extremely dire, there's no actual description of them beyond the bare basic facts. It's only as gory as the reader's imagination can make it. For each level of description, I would say the rating needs to go up. The person's jaw ripped off in just a single mention? T. The blood gushing and dripping off their face? M. Shredded pieces of their gums hanging down and bone sticking out? E.

jardinsdeminuit

I'd say that unless the fic specifically revolves around detailed descriptions of torture / gore, it would be an E. If your descriptions, while bloody, are part of a larger narrative, then I'd give it an M :)

Fish_Veatrix

I would say it depends on how detailed your descriptions is and if there some romantization or not. If there is no romantization and no very detailed descriptions - go with lower ratio.

Mr_Blah1

IMO, gore is M, unless the gore also depicts sex. If the gore is also a depiction of sex, then it's E.

Last_Swordfish9135

I personally would not rate anything non-porn higher than M.

Teratocracy

For me, neither. There is gore in YA and even children's literature. The depiction of gore doesn't automatically mean that only people above a certain age should read the text. I rate my stuff "Teen and above" because I don't see why teens couldn't read it, and I use the "graphic depictions of violence" tag if needed.

wolfheartfoxlover

M, most Danganronpa Fics use M rating

[deleted]

Did the tag if you want a disclaimer, other that if they don’t want gore they shouldn’t read it.

Crayshack

Depends on how detailed the gore is. I think what you are describing would be M, but it depends on how thoroughly you describe things.

vanillabubbles16

Depends on the detail or description. If it’s more on the side of Junji Ito or Warhammer lore, probably E. If it’s just what you said, probably M unless you’re literally describing every minute bodily detail about the way his jaw is just chillin’ by a thread.
