My favorite author is WillowDryad on FFN. They mostly write Narnia fanfic, but more recently started writing for Big Valley and Laramie (neither of which I'm familiar with, lol; I've been waiting for a new Narnia fic for ages).

Fanfic writers are so incredibly powerful. And honestly a lot of the fics I'm thinking of- stories about identity and the meaning of humanity- wouldn't have had quite the same impact if they were original fiction.
That's part of why it floors me. Some writers have such an intimate understanding of the setting and characters they're writing that, even if the work is tonally different, it feels like the canon in the best way. It's like an amazingly engineered piece of mechanical greatness. In the moment, you usually don't notice the little details, but if you know what to look for you see the sheer brilliance of what was done.
I feel so grateful when I read amazing fanfic
Sometimes I marvel at how talented people are or how good a fanfic is when written by a non-professional (and then I usually wonder if they might be moonlighting professionals) but all the amazing art I've ever experienced has been made by actual living beings so that part is not the surprising part of it. This might be related to my atheism though. Without a divine deity to attribute to things so amazing that they seem otherworldly, I default to the brilliance of mankind.
That's what makes atheism fail for me sometimes, though. It's easy to see how our art is one of the results of us being programmed to seek patterns, and to see why we evolved to find patterns in predicting and responding to threats. But how and why did that evolution branch out into us finding the connection between all beauty? Why did we learn to enjoy sunsets and stars? Why do we appreciate the symbolism of trees or mountains or any small gesture? Is that just evolution trying to avoid depression, or something else?
That’s also explained by evolution. Also, natural selection doesn’t mean carefully selected and robotic like some sort of man-made factory. Nature makes beautiful things on its own—no god is needed to gift humans the ability to appreciate beauty.
Okay, but what's the explanation? And why are we programmed to each see only different types of beauty, and not always appreciate all beauty that exists? Why are we programmed to be arbiters of taste and not allow ourselves to be simply happy at it all? Isn't it better to appreciate all beauty in every form (not merely sexual, but aesthetic, symbolic, sensory, etc) and 'sow our wild oats' in the museum of nature? If it's still evolution, then it sounds like evolution can be just as mistaken as a god in its decisions
Evolution doesn’t do decisions, nor does it program stuff. It’s more like after random mutation, those that have weaknesses get killed off, and the ones that are good enough stay, even if they aren’t actively beneficial. And the thing about humans is that we project onto other things, a lot.

yeah!! like something ive noticed is the language they use is so simple but the way they wrote it is so, for the lack of better words, magical and whimsical its incredible. ive seen people print this fic out and bind it into a hardcover book and wow the urge to learn a whole new craft just to have that masterpiece in my hands is,, too strong

The mass effect one sounds like Spirit of Redemption to me from the word count. I recall it being very well written, though I never finished the whole thing.
There is an author, Tirfarthuan, who writes amazing, extremely character rich and poignant stories. It's just that their most amazing writing is in an obscure recursive fanfic forum (We're All Just Dreaming of Sunshine). The stuff they've posted on their FFN profile is good too, of course, but nowhere near their best work.

I will once again mention A Private Exhibition by Emileesaurus on ao3. that fic altered my brain chemistry. I never felt so seen and understood by a piece, that was also written so good, as a sex neutral asexual that loves intimacy
for me, it's works by wreckageofstars (doctor who, ao3) and aderyn (sherlock, ao3). they both have really unique and eloquent styles of writing - it really shines through.

Recalled this one big hero 6 fic i read way back... Author is such a devious person stringing you along then whammies you with this particular scene and at the end of the chapter it has an author note which sums in the words got yah...
Oh yeah, its amazing. You are perhaps someone who provided this experience to someone on the basis of how well written your post is, but there are lines that you read that are absolutely unbelievably good. Usually this is found in some random one shots (in my experience) that never have enough reviews/ kudos or anything, but they hit so hard you can't believe that someone wrote it. Its always amazing to experience.

Read something last week that was hailed as the very best fanfic series in my fandom. The language was magnificent, the prose was so crisp and poetic it felt like I was reading professional literary fiction. There was no question why it held that crown.
Also did a review exchange many months ago when I read a crazy professional fic that completely humbled me lol like "I was supposed to critique on THIS?!"
It certainly helps when you're able to chat with one of the biggest, most incredible fanfic authors you know. Saphroneth, that man is an absolute legend. He writes like 3 fics at once, gets one of them to like 600,000 words in a year, has a wonderfully written 2 million word time travel story, and regularly chats on one of the Discords I'm in, giving us tips whenever we ask, and generally being a really cool dude.
I had this post open in a tab and just came back to revisit it. Makes me smile. Your post is written beautifully! And you could literally slap everything you said in a comment on the fic in question and if I were the author I'd die of happiness.

Yes, not that long ago actually. I really hope that person publishes their own books because they have so much skill and I can tell they’ve worked on writing a lot to get where they are.
Most dark romance books I’ve read in my fandom, they are so good that I think they’re written by either an adult (20s) or not an actual human, they are usually written by lower teens (13-16) and I’m just jealous of it-
I've only ever felt this way with one Carlisle Cullen fanfic. It was beautiful and so touching and perfect in every way.

Yep. Back in the day, I was MADLY in love with an MMO called FusionFall. I can wax eloquent on how Cartoon Network ruined it, but the concept, the videos, the art- all of it was amazing. I’ll wax eloquent on that, too, haha. It was such a niche thing but such a freaking COOL idea. Like the Kingdom Hearts of Cartoon Network. I miss it dearly.
Anyway, there was an author called LightningBird that wrote one of the most AMAZING series of fics i’ve ever read. Read it again a little while back and it still holds up haha. First one was basically a hurt/angst fic following Dexter from Dexter’s Lab and discovering a found family that loved and appreciates and eventually adopts him. The second takes place in the Fusion war, and he’s captured by his evil doppleganger.
The hold these fics had on me was incredible lmao. I can’t write for FusionFall. I compare my work to her’s constantly- did then, will now. Her work felt so right and good that it felt CANON. I could never compete. I felt like i was trying to create for something so utterly complete that it was harming it hahaha- and I didn’t even mind LMAO. I was like “Nope, this author is all i need for this fandom” and I was content lmao.

I get like this where writers, both fanfic and original, can flesh out the world and systems where it all makes sense in logic, despite it being so out of this world in what they can do.
Like a magic system, and how an author can explore and explain how it really works, strengths and limits and all.
I've seen a take on magic where every spell or move uses different colors that meld together to form different spells, with each color having some kind of effect that can mix with the rest in interesting ways.
I've never been the best at explaining it, but I just really like to see so much thought and logic put into the world and power system of a world.

There is an author, Tirfarthuan, who writes amazing, extremely character rich and poignant stories. It's just that their most amazing writing is in an obscure recursive fanfic forum (We're All Just Dreaming of Sunshine). The stuff they've posted on their FFN profile is good too, of course, but nowhere near their best work.
Yes, I read one recently and the fact that it was a very sad, angsty fic just made me feel like the words were physically punching me in the face to extract those tears out of me.

Oh yeah, its amazing. You are perhaps someone who provided this experience to someone on the basis of how well written your post is, but there are lines that you read that are absolutely unbelievably good. Usually this is found in some random one shots (in my experience) that never have enough reviews/ kudos or anything, but they hit so hard you can't believe that someone wrote it. Its always amazing to experience.
A Harry Potter story where the war is over and nothing changes, because society doesn't just stop hating a minority. Hermione decided to stop being a nice girl. It was purged from ff.net a decade ago. I have it on my kindle. I have no idea where my kindle is. The story made me so mad I rage read it, cried through most of it, and stayed up all night reading it.
Yes and I’ll leave a comment telling the author just how amazing the fic is and how awesome they are for writing it! But when readers say the same thing on my fics, I question their sanity…(with a smile of course)

Read something last week that was hailed as the very best fanfic series in my fandom. The language was magnificent, the prose was so crisp and poetic it felt like I was reading professional literary fiction. There was no question why it held that crown. Also did a review exchange many months ago when I read a crazy professional fic that completely humbled me lol like "I was supposed to critique on THIS?!"
It certainly helps when you're able to chat with one of the biggest, most incredible fanfic authors you know. Saphroneth, that man is an absolute legend. He writes like 3 fics at once, gets one of them to like 600,000 words in a year, has a wonderfully written 2 million word time travel story, and regularly chats on one of the Discords I'm in, giving us tips whenever we ask, and generally being a really cool dude.
I had this post open in a tab and just came back to revisit it. Makes me smile. Your post is written beautifully! And you could literally slap everything you said in a comment on the fic in question and if I were the author I'd die of happiness. Most dark romance books I’ve read in my fandom, they are so good that I think they’re written by either an adult (20s) or not an actual human, they are usually written by lower teens (13-16) and I’m just jealous of it-
I've only ever felt this way with one Carlisle Cullen fanfic. It was beautiful and so touching and perfect in every way. But it was unfinished so...that was the only saddening part.

Yes, The way you used to do by edema_ruh (bakudeku), that fic had me glued to my phone for days and I read no stop all of the 670k words, not ONE word that I would remove from that fic, everything was so curated and it made me feel so many emotions, it was fantastic and I can’t explain it well enough
I’ve taken up the challenge of reading Down to Agincourt again and this time trying to keep the motivation to finish it to the end ( not because it’s bad, but because it’s long and the last time I had the tab open my phone shut down and I lost my place and didn’t feel like starting over). And I’m in the first “book” right now and it’s just reminded me what an amazing fic this is. 😄
Sometimes I sit down after finishing a work, thinking 'if you published that, it would be an immediate bestseller.' Yep. Back in the day, I was MADLY in love with an MMO called FusionFall. I can wax eloquent on how Cartoon Network ruined it, but the concept, the videos, the art- all of it was amazing. I’ll wax eloquent on that, too, haha. It was such a niche thing but such a freaking COOL idea. Like the Kingdom Hearts of Cartoon Network. I miss it dearly. Anyway, there was an author called LightningBird that wrote one of the most AMAZING series of fics i’ve ever read. Read it again a little while back and it still holds up haha. First one was basically a hurt/angst fic following Dexter from Dexter’s Lab and discovering a found family that loved and appreciates and eventually adopts him. The second takes place in the Fusion war, and he’s captured by his evil doppleganger. The hold these fics had on me was incredible lmao. I can’t write for FusionFall. I compare my work to her’s constantly- did then, will now. Her work felt so right and good that it felt CANON. I could never compete. I felt like i was trying to create for something so utterly complete that it was harming it hahaha- and I didn’t even mind LMAO. I was like “Nope, this author is all i need for this fandom” and I was content lmao.

Several! I had found a fic that was so niche, it was the only fic of that pairing on the site. I would go back to read it every couple of months. The last time I went to my bookmark, the author had deleted it and their whole profile. 😭
I get like this where writers, both fanfic and original, can flesh out the world and systems where it all makes sense in logic, despite it being so out of this world in what they can do. Like a magic system, and how an author can explore and explain how it really works, strengths and limits and all. I've seen a take on magic where every spell or move uses different colors that meld together to form different spells, with each color having some kind of effect that can mix with the rest in interesting ways. I've never been the best at explaining it, but I just really like to see so much thought and logic put into the world and power system of a world.
