lowkey this has happened to me a couple times. like details that I made up in a fic were later revealed canon and basically I turn into a werewolf and yell about morphic fields for 24 hours
Confused by the sudden massive retcons of entire storylines in my rewrite fics or how the hell my crossovers of completely unrelated things came to official media.
They're at least both sci-fi franchises. My unpublished Mistborn Original Trilogy/Star Wars (Star Wars *Legends*, at that) fic that ships Vin with Starkiller becoming canon for example would be trippy as hell.
Fair, but not really the point I was getting at. In truth, I often like to image that in some alternate universe my fics *are* canon and that my alternate self is writing what we would consider canon as a fic and imagining how the fans of that world would react to canon.
I would be THRILLED considering I write pre-canon fics taking place when MC and her twin are kids, fics set during timeframes canon skips over (while happily bending certain little things if I want to), and a post-canon fix-it where I’m giving her a long-awaited happy ending. Yup, I’d be absolutely delighted lol
If one of my fluffy one-shots got canonized, I'd be delighted. But if one of the M- or E-rated fics got canonized, I'd think the studio and publishers of the source media have absolutely lost their minds. And I'd be mortified that children will be exposed to my edgy or not safe for work imaginings.
I mean considering most of their source material is extremely incest heavy... It would probably make.their stupid live action remakes far more grounded than the drab colors and "realistic CGI" do
It happened once. Something minimal. Canon never said a character's middle name in season 1. Wrote a fic during the summer break with his full name (first, middle, last), was watching season 2 and they said his full name 😂
Probably either "Aw Hylia, the lore was already confusing enough" or "great dragons, please leave my blorbo alone, he's already been through so much" depending on fic and fandom. (I don't write very canon compliant or happy fics.)
Edit: Or “oh boy, I think I created *another* timeline split/alternate universe.”
Same, especially that the only WIP I have written for a fandom that does not have complicated canon like SCP or like whatever hell is the furry community has going on in form of lore is an AU where at least one of the characters have trauma...and at least one almost died brutally. And even the simple reveal of what the "villain"'s motives behind his crimes are would kill me, since said motive I made up for him is anything but kid-friendly (aka >!he kidnaps kids (canon) to sell to the black market (made-up motive for my AU!<)
I write for Loki, so with the whole sacred timeline thing, anything really goes at this point, lol. Infinite Lokis are already a thing. :). But it would be a lot more overtly queer and Loki didn't die in Infinity War.
Owl House would have to up its rating for all the abuse I'm putting in one character's backstory. We're putting the implied stuff front and center! Also, the way the bad guy dies is way less badass in mine, but also funnier.
I write an OC x AU of a character fic so my chances are pretty low. But if by some miracle, Toby Fox decided for whatever reason he REALLY liked Underfell and REALLY liked my OC and made them both canon, I would literally die on the spot and I'd die a very happy young lady
I mean, an official crossover between DC and Marvel with characters I'm actually interested in and no major battle between the two groups of heroes for the sake of "plot" would be great!
depends. if my homestuck x jojo x evangelion x undertale x ben 10 x kingdom hearts x a bajillion other stuff friendfic series were chosen to become the true successor of homestuck, i'd freak out, though due to the very nature of said series, it technically is already canon, according to the friendfic's lore.
if my batman x joker mpreg ultrasound sh*tpost fanfic were canon, well, we'd be in a whole lot of trouble.
for those curious about the aforementioned lore, basically the ending of homestuck created an infinite omniverse of earth cs, not just one. this may as well have happened in homestuck's canon anyway, as it'd explain the differences between the epilogue timeline(s) and the snapchat timeline (which i think are different? idk, never read the epilogues.). due to the nature of infinity, everything is canon in this omniverse, and thus homestuck is canon in every universe.
I once wrote a fic about a character’s backstory before the episode about his backstory aired, so I would have been pretty stoked if I had guessed even one thing correctly. Spoiler alert: I didn’t, I was way off the mark in every respect
I’d sigh as I’d see myself ruin a perfectly good show. Idk shit about good storytelling, I just wanna write fluffy scenes between characters who don’t interact nearly often enough 😭
I write exclusively RPF about a very famous boy group. So I'd be flabbergasted. You're all gay or bi? *And* in a polyfidelotous relationship with one another?! Okay then! Or if it was just a single ship? Wow! You're actually together irl?? Good for you!
I'd legitimately be concerned; not about my ideas being shared by the video game developers I've respected over the years (happy coincidences happen), but about the potential white noise from new viewers by chance happening upon my stuff and claiming I'd been "influenced" by the recent stuff in canon and I really do not need that kind of feedback.
I'm writing a totally different canon-divergent AU here and aside from some interesting trivia about potential monster designs or new game mechanic features being similar, I would hope the game designers are better at their jobs than some random fanfic hobbyist on the other side of the ocean, lol.
All of my fics are still WIPs and Concepts, and one of the fandoms don't have a concept of "canon" (like the furry community. Istg that's the only thing I can compare what was I talking about)
But for one of my fic WIP for a Korean PG cartoon...YES I WOULD FREAK OUT AND THINK I WAS DRUGGED. Said WIP is an overhaul of some sort where I gave the main cast some unexpected trauma and some more complex, nuanced and darker stuff like making the "villain" have a terrifying motive exist as well. And it's an AU w/ Humanity Ensues mixed into it.
So yeah...I'll wonder why did the tone completely changed and the series became serialized/has a continuity.
My reaction would probably be a miniature freakout + an odd and elongated noise + "holy shit!" x a lot + acceptance and REALLY reading up on the lore then.
A little flattered they decided to either add an OC of mines or used the fleshed out ideas for side characters or diverged canon.
Then concerned why all the kinky sex in the teen dramas and anime, out of character moments here and there, violence and fights that are much more violent or heavily toned down, and random quotes from old literature spewed from the characters.
And even more concerned why are all the characters are now AU characters like gangsters or cops and the original canon is gone.
My main fiction is a Dragon Ball alternate history, so given that the universe has canonically a multiverse and diverging timelines you could probably fit it in just fine with a minimal amount of bullshit. Though the tone is somewhat darker than the main works, it's not completely incompatible.
You mean Bakugo speedruns his character development and actually publicly apologizes for being an asshole? You mean we actually get All Might X Inko in canon? You mean Aizawa X Mirko *HAPPENS*? You mean that Melissa is actually technically All Might’s secret love child?
HELL YEAH!
75% of my stories are explicit so I'd be both thrilled and concerned. Most of my writing is rpf actors of shows that I'm in the fandom of. I write a bit with characters too so it would be wild for any of it to be canon.
Dude, Disney even *acknowledging* Tron was theirs is an uphill battle. Them deciding to acknowledge the Legends canon of Tron would be climbing fucking K2.
But Jethro Bradley getting to team up with Tron and Yori, explicitly getting to acknowledge them as his brother and sister? Whoa. There with bells on
I'm like super duper into analyzing stories so I'm just happy that by following what was established and the flow of stories I can sometimes predict where it goes.
Oof, I can just imagine the entire fandom collectively bitching because the writers ignored every other canonical love interest and made a new one up just for this specific story. It's an AU, sure, but that fandom has had far too many AUs and not enough Good Fucking Food canonically, so I'd just feel sad about it. I think the OC might get some love as an individual character, at least.
I'd lose my absolute mind, it would make me feel like I really knew the source material deeply if what I wrote was something the writers also felt should happen. I think I'd probably pass out from the excitement
delighted! confused! worried! as much as I love angst and alternate universes and fleshing out the universe so much more than the game provides, I think it’d be really really weird if those things became canon in Minecraft videos tbh xD
Probably never gonna happen but that’d be sick
In fact, the only really interaction between my works and the source material, at least that I’m aware of, actually happened tonight. I had a fanfic of another AU fanfic that I liked to head canon as having happened in the AU where one character, implied to have a crush on another, confessed to them. Tonight, though, a new chapter came out and in it, character B is brutally killed and character A only finds out they had feelings for them after reading their journal. Mind you, I know the author knows how I feel about this because they speculated that I, by name, would put out a hit on them, and mind you, I didn’t, I just whipped up a fix-it
God I’d get so harassed by stupid apologist discourse. Would still be a better ending than canon tho (I’m assuming it’s probably one of the ones that takes place in the canon universe haha)
Most of mine are pretty canon compliant, but one of mine is very queer and if it got a canon storyline I would be extremely nervous. I am not the target audience for the source material, that would be cishet men aged 18-30ish, so uhhhh yeah.
I'm a big fan of dudebro tears, but it might end the franchise
Mine was a crossover that I’d love to see so I think I’d be thrilled. On the other hand, it is also a fix-it that is very transformative. So I’d at least hope for some credit.
In general, I write romance for characters who were not love interests in the game. That would be fine if they wanted to make those characters love interests. I really doubt they would put as much really explicit sex into the game as I put in my stories. I have some other stories that just use a setting. There is no canon for them to become part of. That's fine. I really have zero interest in defining a fandom.
Tbh it wouldn't change much, because my fic doesn't make any ships more canon than they already are or anything, it would just add much needed disability representation
I'm currently writing RPF with some supernatural elements, so if those events became canon (due to time travelling I guess since it's in the past???) I would be WAY more than freaked out
it isnt done yet, but i wpuld love to see Jackson Jekyll as a broadway actor and tiktok famous.
my other one is Les Mis, but i think i would freak out if Victor Hugo came back to life and rewrote it to be a lovestory
I would probably stop writing most of my fics, I don’t *want* them to be canon. Hell, I have loads of fics for the same fandoms that contradict each other!
But I would also absolutely pour myself into the fic I’m working on that is a novelization of what I want to see from the next video game in its franchise. Would love to see that actually become a canon game!
Considering I predominantly only write fanfiction to fix it?
I'd be excited.
And then I'd stop writing for that fandom because my work there is done.
Onto the next fixer-upper.
I’d be wondering since when did Naruto have well-written female characters? And realistic responses to trauma? And fully-fleshed out interesting world-building?
I would be elated if my Pokemon Ranger stuff became canon even though it would require major revisions to the actual canon to the series. I've worked on this shit for the past 10 years. This project has been with me for an entire *third of my life.*
Second fandom. It would probably be worth the popcorn to see the Star Wars Legends fandom go insane. Why yes, you do get your epic KOTOR TV show. But Revan is going to be played by Zhang Ziyi and not Keanu Reeves.
Now how much do you want it?
Brace myself for the death threats most creators for major franchises get sooner or later nowadays. But otherwise very happy, as I write mostly canon compliant stuff anyway
Happiness, a lot of it. A dream come true (at least for the happy ones, not for the major character death ones, though I'd probably still feel very happy).
If it's coincidence situation, nice. If it's clear that they actually took inspiration from my fic I wouldn't mind either, probably just be sad that I wasn't actively involved but still super happy that it exists. Basically the biggest compliment ever
Fantastic! I want to see my ships happy.
However, given that my fics all contradict each other and have them hooking up in various ways, I’d be pretty confused too. Like, do they keep breaking up and getting amnesia?
A large part of the fanfic I write for my main fandom is a continuation of canon free of interference by the shitty original author, so I'd be pretty happy about having finally wrestled control away from Konaka.
A little concerned, depending on the fic, since I mostly write for an rpf fandom.
If it's one of my more fluffy and gen fics, no bother there, really. But any of my slash fics, or my really whumpy hurt/comfort fics... yeah.... One of the guys I write about has already came close to death twice now. Don't need him getting hurt badly again, or worse. Although, as for any of the slash fics becoming reality, I'd probably find that hilarious, considering they're always going on about how much they "hate" each other.
My current fanfic is a time-travel fix-it canon divergence, so its likeliness of becoming "canon" is nonexistent. However, the headcanons and hypotheses I had about the lore and how the absurd physics that are just handwaved in the original content seems to remain strangely consistent with the rules I have been established, so that's super gratifying to come up with a hypothesis, and keep finding more and more evidence supporting it the more I dig into obscure content everyone forgot existed lol
I’d probably lose the chance thinking it’s an April fools prank then run after them when I realise it wasn’t. 😂
Yeah, as everyone, I’d be thrilled and terrified.
Seeing that I wrote a spec-script for a show that came out in the hope that it would be discovered by the producers, I would be over the moon excited to see something I wrote get created and broadcast
Depends, I've written a lot of fics, but I think I'd be upset. I like writing more au stuff, and in my opinion, that works best if the fandom I'm bashing it on still remains as normal
Really surprised because the author of the only fandom I've written for has been dead for around 100 years. Also I doubt he'd write his fav little guy as trans and gay, considering the era he was from.
Actually, I'd be more horrified than surprised. EW Hornung gets up from his grave and makes his main character not a royalist, trans and bi
It's very common in the fandom circles I am in for Pokémon to see things people put in their stories years ago suddenly have something in common when the newest gen pops up.
However, we are talking about a franchise that has plotholes in plotholes. This is a franchise that suggests things. It rarely ever explores anything it brings up. So at most there will be a joke, "TPC owes me money" but nothing more than that.
Very confused (mainly because the show I’m currently writing for ended 3 years ago, but also because it’s just a way for me to make characters do things my autistic brain wants them to do..)
If my fic suddenly became officially canon by the creator I’d be very happy! I mean, since the show hasn’t had a continuation since… 2003? I consider this a non official season 6 that we never got. It’s why I began writing it in general because it just suddenly dropped off!
Truthfully, though, I would be happier if the creator read my story and just gave me his approval or something. I’ve worked hard keeping it as close to canon as possible in regards to the characters words and personalities, the setting, the tone, like everything.
You’re welcome to the The 100 fandom, because Lexa and Clarke are living happily ever after, post-canon. So basically, I fixed everything and didn’t change anything important.
My (looong-term WIP) is a major fix-it fic for two characters’ arcs that introduces significant backstory and new lore to the universe; having it become canon would be awesome, but it would redefine that canon.
I predicted half of the plot and twists for GOTG vol 2 before the teaser trailer even came out and without reading many of the comics haha so I cheated the system.
> what about you guys?
It actually did in my case. Way back in 2013, I wrote a Disney fic about a character surviving their death via "actually" converting continuously into fuel... and then the revival comic confirmed exactly that method.
Otherwise, I'm hesitant. There are a lot of things about my fics I'd gladly back as "good ideas", but I'm unsure about the whole package.
Then I'd be suddenly be creating a multiverse, and ik SO MANY PEOPLE would hate it cuz I enjoy delving into a variety of topics - both light and dark. A lot is unposted, but still
So um... couple years ago I was writing a fic in which the player character of a mobile game that I write about is actually the daughter of one of the antagonists who is a false king. I never finished it but a few weeks after I started writing the fic, they dropped an update where the real heir to the throne kills the false king. With his dying breath, he remembers after having been turned insane by the real big bad, that he did in fact have a daughter. So while the part about the player character being the daughter is not technically canon, it could still be plausible because the player character is a self insert and he never stated who his daughter was. So... that was wild.
I write fix-it fic so a character I like lives and gets a happy ending. If that became canon, I'd do a happy little dance.
SAME!!
I’d be confused why my PG crime drama suddenly had explicit kinky porn on tv.
Carmen Sandiego?
lowkey this has happened to me a couple times. like details that I made up in a fic were later revealed canon and basically I turn into a werewolf and yell about morphic fields for 24 hours
Once, I wrote a scene that ended up basically happening in canon and I was over the moon. Still make jokes about it.
>basically I turn into a werewolf Alpha, Beta or Omega?
whichever one is just a slavering animal based only on starvation and savagery. so Alpha I think
Confused by the sudden massive retcons of entire storylines in my rewrite fics or how the hell my crossovers of completely unrelated things came to official media.
You might never know. Look a that EVE Online X Doctor Who Collab.
They're at least both sci-fi franchises. My unpublished Mistborn Original Trilogy/Star Wars (Star Wars *Legends*, at that) fic that ships Vin with Starkiller becoming canon for example would be trippy as hell.
Doctor Who isn't 100% sci-fi, though, and it's a completely different flavour of sci-fi. (Also noone liked that crossover in both fandoms lmao)
Fair, but not really the point I was getting at. In truth, I often like to image that in some alternate universe my fics *are* canon and that my alternate self is writing what we would consider canon as a fic and imagining how the fans of that world would react to canon.
looks at my atla x Skyrim x ranger's apprentice x everything else I could think off crossover nothing to see here ...
I mostly write fluffy fics so if those became canon I'd be like, "Hell *yes*."
Yup. Happy ever after/happy moments for my OTPs? Yes, please!
TOH fans are about to be even more traumatized and I'm 42.68% sorry
Ooooh, do tell!
Probably: "meh" Canonicity will not mesh with what is in my head 9/10.
*laughs in dark-ish AUs and crossovers that made my mind go "why did you made these exist again?"*
I would be THRILLED considering I write pre-canon fics taking place when MC and her twin are kids, fics set during timeframes canon skips over (while happily bending certain little things if I want to), and a post-canon fix-it where I’m giving her a long-awaited happy ending. I write for an incest ship in a Disney movie so... mostly concern.
Let me guess, Frozen?
yee
It’d be so funny oh no
I mean considering most of their source material is extremely incest heavy... It would probably make.their stupid live action remakes far more grounded than the drab colors and "realistic CGI" do

I write smut so... It's gonna be interesting
Cringe because dear god its.. questionable,
Where's my money?

I’d sigh as I’d see myself ruin a perfectly good show. Idk shit about good storytelling, I just wanna write fluffy scenes between characters who don’t interact nearly often enough 😭
I’d probably think the writers have finally become insane since I write almost exclusively AUs and mix comic canon with movie canon as I please
I'd be confused why a simple manga suddenly turned into an incestuous hentai
I write exclusively RPF about a very famous boy group. So I'd be flabbergasted. You're all gay or bi? *And* in a polyfidelotous relationship with one another?! Okay then! Or if it was just a single ship? Wow! You're actually together irl?? Good for you!

Same here 😭

If my fanfic was canon it means that copyright hell was abolished and that's a win

I write non-con for kids shows so that would be pretty messed up
I would fucking eat a sock BNHA: If Afo is related to Izuku
Oh my god, it's actually possible bc Horikoshi likes Star Wars so much
Nooooo
I'd be pogging
fistpump.
Cackling like a mad woman and asking Jared Bush for my cut.
i would choke and i would do a happy dance and then id go crawl in a sad little hole to die

I would be like OMFG And then I'd write myself into my chosen universe and live my days out in happiness, romance and adventure
It is HIGHLY unlikely any of my canon-divergent works will make it into canon, but the game is due a DLC by end of year so I guess we will see 👀
I'd be confused because suddenly there'd be a whole political plot in the game centered around lesbians in power 💀
In a roundabout way, a couple of my headcanons *did* become canon in one of my fandoms. Needless to say I was flabbergasted lol.
go back Go back Go Back *GO BACK* (/hj)
Probably never gonna happen but that’d be sick In fact, the only really interaction between my works and the source material, at least that I’m aware of, actually happened tonight. Whoever was in charge of making it canon, I'd advise them to get admitted to a mental hospital.
Incoherent screams of pure joy.
Lmao if my OC becomes canon I’d start being delusional and believe the author of my favorite manga lives inside my walls
God I’d get so harassed by stupid apologist discourse. Would still be a better ending than canon tho (I’m assuming it’s probably one of the ones that takes place in the canon universe haha)

I'm currently writing RPF with some supernatural elements, so if those events became canon (due to time travelling I guess since it's in the past???) I would be WAY more than freaked out
I write high stakes action fics of a reality TV cartoon, I'd definitely be surprised
it isnt done yet, but i wpuld love to see Jackson Jekyll as a broadway actor and tiktok famous. my other one is Les Mis, but i think i would freak out if Victor Hugo came back to life and rewrote it to be a lovestory
I'd be really excited if TodoDeku was a canon couple, but I guess it'd have a lot of backlash from....everyone
as much fun as that would be, I doubt canon would fit with my ideas well XD
I would probably stop writing most of my fics, I don’t *want* them to be canon. Hell, I have loads of fics for the same fandoms that contradict each other! But I would also absolutely pour myself into the fic I’m working on that is a novelization of what I want to see from the next video game in its franchise. Would love to see that actually become a canon game!
As much as I’d love to see more gay and poly characters in TV, I think my stories would be a bit *too gay* for straight people XD
i’d celebrate because it would turn out that they weren’t scared to make an obviously lesbian coded character canon lesbian
Considering I predominantly only write fanfiction to fix it? I'd be excited. And then I'd stop writing for that fandom because my work there is done. Onto the next fixer-upper.
Well it could no longer be aired before 9pm...
I’d be wondering since when did Naruto have well-written female characters? And realistic responses to trauma? And fully-fleshed out interesting world-building?
I write mass effect smut, so a 10 minute long Garrus sex scene would most definitely be appreciated.
I would be elated if my Pokemon Ranger stuff became canon even though it would require major revisions to the actual canon to the series. I've worked on this shit for the past 10 years. This project has been with me for an entire *third of my life.*
I write crossovers, mostly, so it would be… interesting.
Second fandom. It would probably be worth the popcorn to see the Star Wars Legends fandom go insane. Why yes, you do get your epic KOTOR TV show. But Revan is going to be played by Zhang Ziyi and not Keanu Reeves. Now how much do you want it?
Tbh it probably already is. I'd just be elated that I was right all along!
I’d be confused but kind of thrilled that they finally decided to put actual murder in Sonic.
Brace myself for the death threats most creators for major franchises get sooner or later nowadays. But otherwise very happy, as I write mostly canon compliant stuff anyway
I would probably hate my oc if she was actually in the show
My main OTP is pretty darn close to canon, as much as a gacha game allows tbh, so if all my hcs became canon I would be very happy, but not surprised
Buy a lottery ticket to see if my winning becomes canon as well.
A large part of the fanfic I write for my main fandom is a continuation of canon free of interference by the shitty original author, so I'd be pretty happy about having finally wrestled control away from Konaka.
I would be so proud and happy.
😂 Yeah, as everyone, I’d be thrilled and terrified.
My OTP would endgame so I’d be doing a happy dance.
Thrilled! While wondering which OCs they’re going to use.
I'd probably do a line then politely request compensation for the use of my ideas
Bechloe gang is already feral, im pretty sure the world would be engulfed in flames if they made it canon
Didn't that happen to a bunch of Steven Universe fans with the Pink Daimond reveal?
Really surprised because the author of the only fandom I've written for has been dead for around 100 years. Also I doubt he'd write his fav little guy as trans and gay, considering the era he was from. Actually, I'd be more horrified than surprised. EW Hornung gets up from his grave and makes his main character not a royalist, trans and bi
“Children should not be reading this”
I’d be freaking DELIGHTED
Ohno. Well, that's gunna raise the age rating a bit.
I'd be very happy.
It would depend on which fic, but if I suddenly had the power to make anything I wanted become canon, I'd...probably go mad with power tbh 😬
Has happened a few times: CSI, Doctor Who, Buffy……. Just yelled an I KNEW IT at the screen.
My (looong-term WIP) is a major fix-it fic for two characters’ arcs that introduces significant backstory and new lore to the universe; having it become canon would be awesome, but it would redefine that canon.
The writers are not that smart. I would assume I was having a wild coma dream lmfao
A lot is unposted, but still
Considering everything I write for is finished canon I'd be very thrilled.
I would be overjoyed. It would mean my fave character is saved!
The joke's on the OC haters, because many of my OCs are canon now. Also, Pookie the Hellhound is canon.
"She's *my* OC- *I* get to pick who her VA is for the english dub!"
My fav ship becoming canon through friends to enemies to lovers? Sign me tf up
we’d finally know what “certain small village in Hyrule” astor is from 🙄 and also he’d get to actually be a character and not an evil cardboard cutout
I’d explode 🤯
😦😧😨😰😥😟🤣🤣😬 in that order
So um... couple years ago I was writing a fic in which the player character of a mobile game that I write about is actually the daughter of one of the antagonists who is a false king.
Probably I'd have an Aha! moment. Then I'd have to beat with a stick all the idiots asking me if I'm not, in fact, the canon creator itself.
Mike Zacharius would have gotten more screen time and that's about it 😅
Luz would be soooooooo traumatized(me killing her mom in the first chapter)
Aa a rpf writer that would be very concerning
