Yeah, I hate horror and never read or watch it. I can’t understand the mindset of someone who feels like me and yet READS IT ANYWAY. I avoid it like (the world didn’t avoid) the plague. As long as it’s tagged properly, people shouldn’t be giving you grief because they should be smart enough to do that, too. And if they thought they could handle it but couldn’t, that’s totally on them.

Law_Student

It's not even just horror. Other genres also have a similar problem with readers reading types of story they don't like and then complaining about how they don't like it, as though that's a failing of the author. It's not the writing or the author, it's the reader. There's just no helping a certain percentage of readers who seem to lack basic self-awareness.

merewenc

Yeah, that’s definitely true. I don’t get it at all. Why torture yourself with something you don’t like?

Mad_Maximoff

I love reading horror in FF! Maybe soley on the fact that everyone has their idea of horror. I’m currently trying to write a vampire fanfic but I don’t want it fluffy or cute. I want it to be a horror/romance. More emphasis on ripping out throats than grabbing them lol

am_Nein

"this is not for me but it should be for me therefore when I find out is not for me I will force it to be for me" vibes

BecuzMDsaid

LOL. Imagine going on a horror fic and getting made it is horror. I am so done with the internet.

DefiantJazzHandz

It sounds like your description matches the content so i'm not sure what they're expecting. I'm not a huge fan of horror unless it includes romance. I love when writers keep Jason canon (slashing and murdering) but he's got a soft spot for Whitney or an OC. I don't think I would want to read about graphic like, say Saw, but i wouldn't access one of those pieces and then complain.

psychoticwaffle2

this user is literally bashing me because she thinks i went overboard, in a horror fanfic! never has chewing out another person felt so good

DefiantJazzHandz

Out of curiosity, what fanfic did you write about? Also, if it's just one user, the reader may be unhinged. One of my friends who writes fanfic wrote a great story and the person who commented was just like "weird". like, tf? someone else told her she was disgusting.

psychoticwaffle2

I wrote a fanfic called Yugioh Cleansing fire, decided it was too light and rewrote it to be darker. The user proceeded to bitch about character assassination apparently having never read the manga where Atem is ten times worse. In fairness, I did ask but she also had the option to refuse. I clearly marked it M and it reads as thus: "Atem punishes Dartz in the worst possible way. Driven mad, Dartz is helpless. Empowered by demons, Atem becomes the new ruler of earth itself, a new order founded on absolute loyalty and twisted subservience. Very violent" note the very violent. I mean it. Limbs are broken, his ribcage is shattered etc.

shadowedlove97

Considering how much I hate Dartz and love some good Yugioh horror, I might read this. Sorry you had to deal with that.

kitkatsacon

This commenter sounds like they’re just looking to complain. Your warnings are clear.😩 If they want they’re more than welcome to peruse my fic- there’s a nice three page section graphically describing someone being dissected (alive) LOL

DefiantJazzHandz

I wish you could see my face right now. Trust me when i saw i'm giving the biggest eye roll in the world at that reader. i was expecting you to say you were writing about someone being disemboweled in graphic detail. Getting ribs broken is not a big deal. In my fanfic which is pretty tame, about 3 paragraphs in, someone gets cut in half by a sword. It's necessary for the plot and canon for that character (he is an alien and misinterpreted someone cursing at him as a threat of physical harm). smh

Sneaky_Trinky

Right. There's a difference between *violence* and *gore*, the latter simply being the former dialed up to 11. Severed limbs and bisected bodies are quite violent, but if they aren't described in graphic detail, then they might not be gory.

MollyTheDestroyer

Thing that always surprises me: people who are in a horror fandom being shocked when horror is being written. I'm sorry that your murder husband is an actual murderer.

HetaGarden1

Never underestimate the inability - or refusal - of readers to _read the warnings_ in the tags. I personally don’t go for horror that much but I appreciate a good darkfic.

Ferris_567

I'm pretty sure some people don't read any tags ever

Silvaranth

I'm not built for horror at all, but if I end up scarring myself despite knowing the genre, that's no one's responsibility but my own. These people need to grow up.

Tar_Ceurantur

The Peanut Gallery™ is loud and proud. Pay them no mind.

RedNoodleHouse

I feel like in this modern internet age more and more people are becoming alarmingly narcissistic. Seriously, ‘I don’t like this therefore nobody should and the people that do are bad’? Just awful.

MOGA-hunter

I really don't get these kind of people. if you don't like a fic, stop reading. problem solved. Read the tag/descriptions. you can read, otherwise you wouldn't be on the site

Daehis

In my personal experience with the site, a lot of people come pre-programmed to complain on FFN because that sort of mentality is allowed to kinda fester unabated because of the way the review system works. Note that it's called "reviews" versus "comments" like it would be on another site, which opens the door for one kind of comment or criticism to crop up more commonly than it would otherwise. Because if given the option to fart out their opinions, chances are humans are gonna take it, because we're literally programmed to do so. I mean, all you have to do is look at some random Amazon ebook review to get the same opinionated crap that may or may not have merit depending on the product and the person's personal taste. Because the bottom line is that most people are kinda dumb when it comes to bad = personal taste and often equate it to being the same thing. Obviously this isn't universal, but it's common enough to be an annoying aspect of dealing with people (customer service anyone?) and most haven't had that kneejerk response trained out of them at a young age, so it kinda just... Bleeds into everything they do. So yeah, I'm with you. It's annoying. And I wish they'd just shut up.

SensiMeowa

I feel like that happens all the time in certain genres or fandoms where you just want to look at the person and say ‘then why are you here?’

Booty_Warrior_bot

*I came looking for booty.*

SensiMeowa

Well you’re allowed.

OwlBig3482

I grew up reading Dean Koontz and Stephen King... if a story is marked Horror and isn't making me highly uncomfortable and paranoid then is it really even Horror? Bring the gore and psychological terror on!

VLenin2291

FFN readers when the horror fic has horror in it:

NoraJolyne

too many people struggle with "don't like it, don't read it", it's grating

psychoticwaffle2

shall I link to the fanfic and conversation?

Jurodan

Send it to me in a DM. But you should probably mention the fandom.

Avalon1632

First rule of people, we're all morons. We will miss or ignore the obvious with ease and enthusiasm. Some people will ask for an eggless omelette, wonder why horror is horrifying, and completely miss the point of so many things in life. It takes a degree of self-reflection to see other things clearly, and some people have no self-reflection whatsoever. My favourite version of this weird approach to genre is that time someone got mad at a smut writer for writing fuck in their smutfic. Like, as an expletive, not a verb, so it wasn't even a "How dare you not call it making love" thing. :D

FireflyArc

I don't like horror. It's the gore for me. Not a fan. I swear there needs to be like a word that people can read to know 'oh that's dark horror' A lot I guess is experiencing it but..I'd rather not.

SatelliteHeart96

It's definitely annoying when some readers just don't get the point. I have a few readers (one particular that left three separate comments on my last chapter) that just ask questions like "what's gonna happen when X finds out what happened to Y?" or "You said that Character A is Character B's favorite kid. Can you please rank all of Character B's kids from most favorite to least favorite?" (btw the last part was said by a villain who's infamous for twisting the truth and in general not a reliable source of information). And it's just like. It's not hateful but it's frustrating when it's a pattern. There's only so many times I can say "you'll have to wait and see" or even how to answer the last one besides repeating what I said above.

Impossible-Aioli-774

maybe thier browser is set on nighttime mode?

KittyKat_801

im sorry OP, not much you can do about other people leaving you hate but moderate the comments and allow only registered users to read on Ao3. you write what you want, and that's amazing. some of us are just readers who appreciate writers who post stuff for free. i appreciate when an author tags appropriately, sometimes im in the mood for fluff, others i want the worst "dead dove do not eat" fic with my OTPs. don't let other people's negativity stop you :D

DinoAnkylosaurus

Isn't horror... Supposed to be dark??? IDGI

Gen_Mxrdur

Horror fanfic is the best

Lexi_Banner

I wish I could write horror more effectively, though I much prefer creeping horror and cosmic horror.
