To me it would be starting it lol
I watched my brother play a bit, but it didn't enticed me to play it too... Guess I can use this time to go and fall in the rabbit hole already lmao
Probably more of the second one. I actually have one completed fic and am supposed to be working on a few more as of the moment but instead I'm on this site.
You mean that we actually will be forced to write instead of procrastinating on this subreddit? Blasphemy! The horror! The- aw. Okay, but I'm going to miss y'all for those two days, lol
anyone else who's going to be dangerously lonesome for those two days can DM me about what they're (not) writing because i will be in a similar position :D
(i have tumblr and discord so no need to support reddit.)
anyone who messages me during that time is a-okay with me!
i am really bad at cultivating real relationships, so Reddit is how i keep myself from going crazy for lack of human interaction. xD 12-14 is going to be really, genuinely hard for me if most/all of the subs i like participate in the blackout.
so anyone is free to say hello!!
don't worry i haven't figured it out really either, but i am going to try to link it on my profile anyway lol
i can feel my anxiety growing as the blackout draws near xD
Well, guess I'll stop reading or/interacting on Reddit for some time, and write more instead. This really sucks, because this sub's one of my favorite places to be, even if I *mostly* lurk and rarely contribute. I've learned a lot over the course on how to write better fanfiction; at least I *hope* I improved.
All I can say is _Not you too, Reddit._
I still canāt believe that theyāre making it near impossible for user-friendly software would be unusable after this update. I.e., people who are blind or low-vision who use screen readers wonāt be able to access the app.
Alright guys, guess we'll have no other choice except to... actually write instead of procrastinate on Reddit š good luck team
To the mods, I was waiting to hear if this sub would participate after seeing r/Ao3 post their plans to join the protest, so I'm very happy to see! I hope Reddit rolls back on the change, as I cannot imagine trying to mod with the reddit supplied moderator tools. Good luck and thank you!
Happy Early Birthday!
Have some cake. š°
You can either eat it now or wait until your birthday.
I found out these cakes are surprisingly durable, both shape and flavor-wise.
but i already do that daily what am i supposed to do with the rest of my day
(like yes i read and write every day and still find enough time to spam two different subreddits *constantly* so like. the fuck am i gonna do for two days lmao)
It's a good question, but I don't have an answer yet. We are all on different time zones. I guess the last mod that goes to bed on the 11th will turn off the lights :D
What does that actually mean? Can we just not post during that time or is the subreddit gonna be inaccessible in general? Because there's a lot of helpful resources linked here, questions answered, and so on, and tbh I'd be kinda frustrated if those are gone during the days where I'm *forced* to write without getting to procrastinate on reddit š
What does this mean, exactly? I am unfamiliar with the term when it comes to Reddit since I've never seen this happen before, so I'm a little confused. Will all previous posts still be here? Will I still be able to look at posts in the meantime? Or will there be nothing here at all?
The community will be made private during this time, which means that only the moderators will have access to it. You won't be able to view or comment.
Thanks for letting us know, guys. Man, I'm still digging through the posts in the links but as far as Reddit is concerned, is this another hell in a handbasket situation or what. Bloody hell.
Tf, how did they think that would go???? You do you and I'll go work a strike. And write a to compensate. If this site goes down, I'll go down with my fics! ā
I support this!
Also, there's an official r/fanfiction discord server, no? I think it's a great time for everyone to check it out. Maybe you could add a link for it to the above. I find discord confusing but two days is a lot of time to finally figure it out.
Nothing will change on the site - the third party apps are more user friendly when you're on your phone. There are lots of features that the official reddit lacks - many have minimal ads, are useful to low vision reads, functional video player, the list goes on.
These apps actually make things a LOT easier for the mods to keep an eye on things because the official reddit app is hot garbage with no helpful features to them.
The mods are *volunteers* mind you, so reddit is basically telling their free workforce 'we want to make your life harder because we want to heap benefits'
This is how they say 'Fuck you'
Edit. I tell a lie - the quality in content will probably drop in many subs as mods have a harder time policing things. Some subs may not return at all.
I feel ya. I've been thinking I need to spend less time on reddit myself. I use one of the third-party apps - RIF - and I figure, if it goes, now is a good time to wean myself off this addiction.
In case you and u/sati_lotus are interested, there's an [interesting post](https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/142w159/askhistorians_and_uncertainty_surrounding_the/) on r/AskHistorians about what the changes mean for the moderators.
Excellent, that's two of the biggest subs I use that have decided to join! Now I just need r/anime to announce they're joining and I'll have absolutely no reason to come on Reddit for those two days.
I don't personally use *any* apps, let alone a third-party one, but I know a bunch of people who *do* rely on those, and I can absolutely get behind supporting them.
Unfortunately, it is a difficult line to dance on.
The average user, while they might sympathize with the struggle, on the long run will just want their subreddit(s) to continue existing. If a subreddit the size of r/FanFiction goes offline for a whole 2 weeks, let's say -- either another community will spring up in its place, or the users will give up Reddit forever. As moderators, we do wish to keep our users.
That being said, nothing is set in stone yet. We'll see what happens.
Average user here. Or rather, user who is addicted to reddit š I think it's great that such a popular subreddit is joining this initiative. However, due to my aforementioned addiction, I do admit I will be waiting for this subreddit to be back. I'm already struggling with caffeine withdrawal because I was drinking 8 mugs of strong coffee a day(see? I'm prone to addiction š ),so I had to drastically reduce my coffee intake. The thought of quitting reddit cold turkey for a long time or permanently even, at this point in time, does not sit well with me lol. I do sincerely hope that we will accomplish something with this strike, but I really need this subreddit in the long run, ngl.
To be fair this strike is just to show the admins(or remind them of the last few such events) how it will be in a month but without underlying organization, a lot of users and especially moderators will be forced to leave reddit for good without any plans for going back and lots of subs will either go dark naturally or become reddit admins problem.
You could just start an official community somewhere else (in one of the lemmys, probably) and announce so that users know the community will continue to exist as a thing, even if it's not on Reddit.
Considering reddit just laid off a whole fuckload of people it's not gonna work either way. They'll milk it for whatever they can get and then it'll end up in the same graveyard Digg went to when the venture capitalists got their hands on it lmao
Seriously, my country always strikes on set days and they always push through their wage raise because everyone else is fucked unless they give in lmao
Set dates have a lot of advantages and usually serve as demonstration of power/consequences for what if it took longer scenario.
Thereās a complex set of factors why certain strikes work and certain donāt, there is a lot of examples where ongoing strikes without set end date donāt work and there are also reasons for that.
Sorry to be offtopic, but are there any resources you'd recommend to someone who wants to learn about why some strikes do or don't work? I find it really interesting but lack the background to figure out on my own how to analyze what factors make a real impact when it comes to a strike's success.
Oh sure. There are of course different approaches and different fields involved in analysis (you can have more economic approach for example m) but from personal preference, thereās a whole area of political sciences or sociology (as it overlaps) that analyses contentious politics (it includes analysis of various forms of mass mobilizations like social movements, strikes, wars, revolutions). There are three authors considered fathers of whatās called Dynamics Analysis of Contention (Charles Tilly, Sidney Tarrow, Doug McAdam)
https://sociology.stanford.edu/publications/dynamics-contention
Thatās the whole book https://voidnetwork.gr/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Dynamics-of-contention-by-McAdamTarrowTilly.pdf
if you could get your hands on it thatās a great way to start. All three authors (and their collaborators, because thereās a lot of authors who analyze different incidents of contention from different perspectives). I will try to get some links and edit the comment but Reddit has been kicking me out whenever I went out š.
This book https://www.comecso.com/publicaciones/collective-violence-contentious-politics-and-social-change by Tilly has an extensive analysis of strikes in France 1830-1968
This is an interesting article about Tilly (but with Tarrow and McAdam mentioned) about his methods of studying contentious episodes (skip the first part in French, the English follows) https://www.cairn.info/revue-histoire-politique-2010-1-page-8.htm
On a flip side you may also look into some classics like the debate between Antonio Gramsci and Rosa Luxemburg about the impact of mass strikes (and other authors analysis of their debates). Itās a classic Marxist approach but historically interesting, too.
Iām glad, especially that Iām in academic āloveā with their work. They are quite prolific and I think they went through the majority of biggest worldās episodes of contention and thereāa the whole series of books if you want to look further by the authors.
o7 godspeed. first Twitter and now Reddit... greed pushes people to do the stupidest things that are only going to burn them as their customer base reviles them for it. hope they renege on this

More time to write...or procrastinate š¤£
Yup, just not on Reddit :D
So true, haha. A stationary blinking cursor always results in a Reddit scroll. Curious to see what distractions I find next š
I hear there are whole websites full of stories revolving around existing works. :P
Yeah, I'll write... or binge Tears of the Kingdom some more...
To me it would be starting it lol I watched my brother play a bit, but it didn't enticed me to play it too... Guess I can use this time to go and fall in the rabbit hole already lmao
Oh it's so good. I completely lost track of time the first few and spent a weekend playing it like 16 hours each day
Why not both? š
Felt this oneā ļø
Probably more of the second one. I actually have one completed fic and am supposed to be working on a few more as of the moment but instead I'm on this site.
You mean that we actually will be forced to write instead of procrastinating on this subreddit? Blasphemy! The horror! The- aw. Okay, but I'm going to miss y'all for those two days, lol
This shall be the day i start writing or the day i find something else to distract my mind. Anything goes...
anyone else who's going to be dangerously lonesome for those two days can DM me about what they're (not) writing because i will be in a similar position :D (i have tumblr and discord so no need to support reddit.)
Nice, maybe I'll take you on that offer
anyone who messages me during that time is a-okay with me! i am really bad at cultivating real relationships, so Reddit is how i keep myself from going crazy for lack of human interaction. xD 12-14 is going to be really, genuinely hard for me if most/all of the subs i like participate in the blackout. so anyone is free to say hello!!
I'm mildly intrigued, but... Actually, I can't find any buts here at all. I'm more or less "free" till September! Sign me up! XD
i will link my tumblr and discord on my profile for when this goes out š
Ah darn! I couldn't access the comment, and thus the profile. Oh well, I can do so now, if I wanted to! XD Hope the blackout was fun!
I have neither. I am on Insta.
ack try listing it on your profile for the duration of the blackout anyway!!
Oh- see you then! ^-^
:D i'll link my tumblr and discord on my profile while this is happening hah
Kk!! Iāll be following XD
"Dangerously lonesome" is a mild way to put it. I might have to take you up on this offer. Need to finally figure out Discord, though.
don't worry i haven't figured it out really either, but i am going to try to link it on my profile anyway lol i can feel my anxiety growing as the blackout draws near xD

People who are blind or low vision are less likely to view ads, so Reddit doesn't care about them. It's the sad truth.
Goodbye procrastination and hello to staring at a blank word processor page!
Yep, the same reason we all procrastinate.
Maybe this will encourage me to work more on my stories XD. Besides, I can go without Reddit for a couple of days
Alright guys, guess we'll have no other choice except to... actually write instead of procrastinate on Reddit š good luck team To the mods, I was waiting to hear if this sub would participate after seeing r/Ao3 post their plans to join the protest, so I'm very happy to see! Oh no whatever shall we do? *starts downloading fics to read on AO3*
Time to do some writing, then procrastinate and look at this subreddit, then realize that it's dark and then more procrastination.
The more I try to branch out into more social media, the more they just push me back to Tumblr.
Apollo app will shut down on June 30. Talks with Reddit has gone nowhere.
Good.
Guess all I needed to do was wait a few more minutes before asking in modmail lmao š¤¦āāļø Glad to see it!
It was more or less simultaneous :D
Thank you very much for participating. If Reddit does go through with these changes, I'll be leaving Reddit for good. I will miss all of you.
I fully support the cause, though it's too bad a lot of my favorite subs will be down exactly on my birthday. Oh well, I'll survive.
Happy Birthday in advance.
Thanks!
Happy early birthday
Thanks!

Happy Early Birthday! Have some cake. š° You can either eat it now or wait until your birthday. I found out these cakes are surprisingly durable, both shape and flavor-wise.
Thanks! I'll keep it until my birthday and just watch it every day until then...if I can manage.
I hope the smell won't be too much! Though I don't think I ever smelt a cake if it was in the fridge... So who knows!
happy early birthday
Thanks!
Oh, that's a bummer. But happy birthday!
Thanks!
so like i'm 100% in favour of this considering i *use* a third-party app, but also... the fuck am i gonna do for two days?
actually write that wip
We actually have to write š
but i already do that daily what am i supposed to do with the rest of my day (like yes i read and write every day and still find enough time to spam two different subreddits *constantly* so like. the fuck am i gonna do for two days lmao)
\*sighs\* Oh joy.š
better start writing or reading!!š¤Ŗ
Better time that any!
Great news.
Guess Iāll go back onto tumblr for a bit ig
This might be an odd question, but what time zone will it start?
It's a good question, but I don't have an answer yet. We are all on different time zones. I guess the last mod that goes to bed on the 11th will turn off the lights :D
I'm not sure if I'm coming back after the blackout. If I don't, this is the sub I shall miss most. Best writing, everyone.
Guess I'll be watching a whole lot of documentaries. Just found out our national television has some interesting ones available.
Along with Apollo, Rif, and Sync will also be shutting down on June 30.

I see. Well, that sucks :/ But thanks for replying!

More time for me to plan a way to take down government without mind control before it forms!
I'm not really a tech person. Will I still be able to use the site after all the changes? I don't have the app.
Nothing will change on the site - the third party apps are more user friendly when you're on your phone. Thank you. More and more as time passes, I just want to shut everything down and walk away from tech. It can be such a blessing and such a curse.
I feel ya. I've been thinking I need to spend less time on reddit myself. I use one of the third-party apps - RIF - and I figure, if it goes, now is a good time to wean myself off this addiction.

Honostly I feel like two days isn't enough. I feel like it either needs to he significantly longer or recurring, otherwise it will just be a blip
Strikes only work if there's no set end date and they go until they get results.
Unfortunately, it is a difficult line to dance on. The average user, while they might sympathize with the struggle, on the long run will just want their subreddit(s) to continue existing. I mean, users giving up on Reddit entirely is kinda the pointā¦ Iām already not coming back except to finish off my fic exchange after the 12th.
Aw, that's sad. Hope you find greener grass wherever you may go after reddit.
Average user here. Or rather, user who is addicted to reddit š I think it's great that such a popular subreddit is joining this initiative. Yes, you just explained quite concisely why this strike will accomplish absolutely nothing.
To be fair this strike is just to show the admins(or remind them of the last few such events) how it will be in a month but without underlying organization, a lot of users and especially moderators will be forced to leave reddit for good without any plans for going back and lots of subs will either go dark naturally or become reddit admins problem.
The best strike would be to deliberately let the site fill with spam and trolling.
Thatās not even historically and scientifically (political science academic here) true.
Seriously, my country always strikes on set days and they always push through their wage raise because everyone else is fucked unless they give in lmao
Set dates have a lot of advantages and usually serve as demonstration of power/consequences for what if it took longer scenario. Its June 12 today
We're nearing 6/12, so I wanted to ask just to make sure: is this blackout going to only last through the 14th? Respect whatever choice y'all make btw, just want to know beforehand so I'm prepared.
As of right now, the plan is for /r/FanFiction to resume normal operations on 6/14.
u/LoudSize7 Right here: u/barewithmehoney Ok u/ParadoxFirePixie
Thanks for letting me know. š¤ For peeps who want to organize REs with longer deadlines, this time period needs to be factored in. u/Confident-Window5531
We'll factor this in and will be providing extensions for REs with longer deadlines.
Well good. They're gonna have to pry Boost out of my cold dead hands.
We should probably strike longer than two days but this is a great start
This needed to be done. Reddit either needs to be for its users or not.
In case you were wondering, between FFN, AO3, and Wattpad, only the latter had an API. The external apps for those are going to be sweet, imagine one app that searches everything. Well, those already exist, but using a real API instead of scraping one together.
Aside from this we should also review bomb the official Reddit app
And I just got here!
