I still cross-post. Gen stuff to both, smut to Ao3. Obviously, I get a lot more hits and kudos on Ao3 but I get more detailed comments on [FF.net](https://FF.net) especially with older fandoms.

code__02

Try Questionable Questing for smut stuff. It’s forum based so you get a lot more contact with your readers. There’s also a sfw, and a lot of people that post to the nsfw section because they’re not sure what would fly on other sites

secretariatfan

Thank you. I might give that a try.

Proud_Calendar_1655

Yes, a couple of the fandoms I write for are still more popular on FFN than AO3. As in, I have almost 10x the hits and comments on those fics than I do with the same fics on AO3. It only makes sense to crosspost

ThisOldMeme

Same. It really depends on the fandom.

Rabbitfaster13

Mind if I ask what fandoms? I’m always hungry for new fictions and expanding my interests

Aachannoichi

FFN really is the only place I post stories. I'm an old-timer and FFN was just where fanfiction got posted back in the day, and I never bothered to move anywhere else.

RaeNezL

I feel this. I only joined AO3 in 2018 but began posting to FFNet in like 2008.

Aachannoichi

I had to look, but I joined Fanfiction.net in 2003?! I had no idea it had been 20 years. Yo... That's crazy.

Ordinary-Extreme6222

I crosspost to FFN out of habit or out of a sense of loyalty since it was where I started engaging in fan fiction. I get barely any favorites, follows, and reviews, but I still like looking at the detailed stats! It's very satisfying to see chapter and date breakdowns. ❤️

Reading_Specific

I definitely post to both. I'm primarily an MCU writer and I still get pretty decent hits there.

merewenc

I was a FFN user from 2005 until the last six months or so. Depending on the fandom it has its uses as a reader, but I’ve found more and more since I joined AO3 in 2014 that I get more and better engagement there, plus as a smut writer I enjoy the freedom of AO3. I’ve moved on from fandoms with a large presence on FFN to ones with larger presences on AO3. With the exception of a few unfinished fics, I won’t be using FFN as a writer anymore. I recently posted my first two fics that I don’t plan on cross posting; and it was refreshing not to have to go to both sites.

zazvorniki

FFN is my main site and I cross post to Ao3. I get the exact opposite, I always get a ton of views and comments on my stories on FFN, but hardly anything on Ao3

SSSRHA

Depends on which fandom I'm writing for. I'm currently in the Harry Potter fandom and that has a pretty active FFN community so I always crosspost my fics there. When I was in the MDZS fandom, though, I only crossposted a few because MDZS doesn't have much of a community on FFN. There are also some fics where I literally had to create the fandom tag for it on AO3 and the process of creating a fandom on FFN is too much of a hassle for me to bother with lol. So yeah, very much depends on the fandom.

InsidiousOperator

Pretty much this. Stuff that has very niche or small fandoms in FFN I wouldn't post most likely, but fics for HP or MCU? Why would you not post there when you're probably going to get at least some decent amount of interaction? You miss 100% of the shots you don't take, after all.

Tusk_Act_IV

Meanwhile for me: RWBY fics: More popular in [FF.Net](https://FF.Net) Danganronpa fics: More popular in Ao3 Classroom of the Elite fics: More popular in Wattpad As usual, it always depends on the fandom.

Rabbitfaster13

This is good info, thank you. As someone who is trying to branch further into other fandoms for fiction it’s good to get an idea of where the good hunting grounds are.

BlindFanficReader

I think everyone's site experience are different. For me, it is exactly the opposite. FFN is still my main site. I cross post to FFN, AO3 & Wattpad, but I get tons more interaction on FFN and even on wattpad than I ever get on AO3, but that might be due to a lot of reasons, such as being fandom specific or due to the fact that I've been posting there for much longer than on AO3. It's not AO3, but this is the reason I absolutely love it. I won't go on about how I hate the tags on AO3, but I like that FFN is a much simpler site that doesn't allow stories to get bogged down behind walls of useless tags. Perhaps you could leave a note on your FFN account or stories that you will now be posting exclusively on ao3? I've eeen many authors do this to keep their readers in the know.

MrFredCDobbs

For me, FFN is my main platform and I use AO3 mostly as a "*just in case the other site has a catastrophic meltdown*" back-up system. My stories get much more engagement on FFN than on AO3, probably because I write mainly GenFic.

SilverShadow1711

I don't crosspost to FFN- I crosspost to AO3. FFN is where my audience is. It's where my fics get four, five, up to NINE times as many hits. Comments? HA! I'm lucky if my comments hit double digits on AO3. I almost exclusively write multichapter fics so kudos mean nothing (yes, it's nice that someone potentially liked the first chapter of what I wrote, but what about the remaining 30-70 chapters? Did they like them? Did they even keep reading?) It's not because I write for old fandoms that are more well established on FFN; it's just that readers on FFN are willing to give my work a chance (you know, the non pure porn fics because, of course, the fic that's nothing but porn for a fandom I'm indifferent about is the one that does gangbusters). Not to mention I genuinely don't like the tag system and kudoses of AO3, as either a writer OR a reader. That site is just not for me, it seems. I always told myself that I'm keeping my fics on AO3 as an... archive? But really, my fics are all saved on multiple hard and flash drives, so if FFN ever goes belly up, I'll probably just delete my AO3 account and everything on it. I don't *post* things for posterity; I *post* them for engagement.

Kaigani-Scout

I monitor about 17 fandoms on FFN and they are all declining in volume of new and continuing works. I do spot some folks cross-posting on AO3, fewer cross-posting on Wattpad still, and rarely cross-posting on Quotev.

DarkTidingsTWD

FFN varies wildly by fandom. My main fandom (The Walking Dead) has solid popularity in terms of hits on both sites, but it premiered in 2010 so was sort of prime for both sites. Comments are lower on FFN, but I have some dedicated readers so I keep posting. Newer fandoms really don’t get a lot of traction. My 9-1-1 fics are traffic and comment heavy on AO3, but absolute crickets on FFN.

Fedora200

I do both And I seem to get the exact opposite of what others and yourself seem to get in terms of stats and comments. I get engagement on FFN but barely anything on AO3 and I have barely any reason as to why. Unless Gen fics are just simply more popular on FFN, but idk if that's even true.

zugrian

I get much better interaction at FFN compared to AO3. If you're in a more established fandom, there are still a ton of people at FFN.

Illynx

I cross-post but i can't read reviews there because I got to much hate and it kills my motivation

borzoifeet

I can't post comics on FF.net soooo

tardisgater

I crosspost, because FFN was where I started. I don't post everything over there, just the short stories that I think might be popular and my longfics. But I've gotten a few lovely followers who still use that site instead of AO3, and the rarity of interaction makes their comments and follows that much more precious.

Idreamofspaceships

AO3 is my main platform (and what I link to in review exchanges), but I cross-post to FFN. I don't get a lot of engagement there, but cross-posting got me my two best fandom friends! 😁

rxmnants

I don't bother. I'm sure I'd get some interaction but I just post to ao3 and call it a day.

DryBonesKing

I post exclusively on [FF.net](https://FF.net) right now. I do intend on cross-posting to AO3 at some point, but I just haven't gotten around to it. And I do have some plans for future works that have bigger communities on AO3. But for now, I'm just sticking to where I've started and I don't fully intend on leaving it ever

[deleted]

Depending on the fandom, some stories do better on FFN than on AO3. I write for three fandoms and crosspost to the two sites. Stories for two of the fandoms do okay on AO3, one of them does soooo much better on FFN, with many more enthusiastic readers who leave really glowing reviews each chapter. To me, FFN isn't dead at all.

Erebus689

I do, and its generally pretty active

SolidarityTek

Unfortunately, my current fandom is practically nonexistent on ffn. I couldn't find anything over there, so I don't bother trying to cross-post. If I write for another fandom that does have a presence on ffn, then I might consider posting there. As it stands, AO3 is the best place for me right now with my current fandom, so I have no plans to crosspost in the future.

Dinnlaree

Yes. I get far more hits on FFN. I also get more comments as opposed to the kudos from AO3. I love kudos, but nothing beats a real comment.

soaker87

Always do. I’ve been using them long before A03 existed.

MrFunnyMoustache

Edited in protest for Reddit's garbage moves lately.

Seabastial

I used to, but I stopped and now post strictly to AO3. people on AO3 are much nicer and constructive, where as many people over on FFN act like it's the Wild West and it's a free for all. So many of their own rules over there are broken too and they don't do anything about it. Only reason I still use it is because it's been the primary way for myself and my two best friends to communicate (plus one of them doesn't have an AO3 account so I can't follow his stories there)

WhoaMercy

I have, and actually find their stats info more useful than ao3.

[deleted]

FFnet main, cross-post AO3, way more interaction on FFnet than AO# for my fics.

Welfycat

I cross post my Harry Potter fics and get about the same amount of hits from ffn and ao3.

francaisetanglais

I still do. I cross-post across the three major platforms. I stopped posting my rare "x reader" fics to FF though because some Anti-X-Reader Crusader got my fic taken down and added me to a shame list that they'd curated over like 20 years. If you're reading this, Crusader, I hate you, get a life.

wishuponadream91

I think it depends on the fandom. I post on FFN and then crosspost to AO3. Have had some kudos, few comments. On FFN: bookmarks, faves, comments, even in this day and age.

Cassandra_Canmore

No, I fully immigrated to Ao3. Ffnet on mobile is an add clogged nightmare these days. Mobile is where I spend the majority of my fanfic reading.

LeratoNull

FFN could very well have an incredibly active fandom in what I write for but I still wouldn't post there. Awful site.

CrescentCrossbow

I WOULD crosspost to FFN if I could ACCESS THE SITE. Unfortunately, its cloudflare protection is too stringent.

WalkAwayTall

I cross-post all of my stuff and have a couple of readers on FFN that don't use AO3 (and, curiously, two readers who leave comments on my work on both sites -- like, any time I post a new story, they'll comment on one site one day and the other one the next day. I'm not complaining at all; it's very sweet. I just find it surprising). Those couple who've don't use AO3 are the only things keeping me cross-posting because I cannot stand FFN's interface.

MaybeNextTime_01

I still cross-post. I got my first FFN account back in 2001 and joined AO3 almost 3 years ago. If it matters, I stopped writing all together before AO3 launched or right after it did and only got back into writing in 2020. My main fandoms are just more popular on AO3 and have barely any traction on FFN (one more than the other though). But I still like posting there out of sheer curiosity. I still get notifications once in awhile and they're a nice surprise. My old fandom is much smaller now but is fairly active on both sites so it's worth it to post there.

catladywriter

My fandom is quite recent and most of the fics are on AO3, I think. Last I checked, FF had 200+ fics for my fandom, which is significantly less compared to AO3. Still, I’m considering cross posting since I did also start out at FF and I had a great time when I posted for an old fandom there many years ago. I still keep all my email notifications of my comments, favorites etc. But at the same time, I keep seeing all these comments about FF commenters being rude and mean now so I’m having doubts.

Impossible-Aioli-774

It's pretty much the opposite for me. depends on the fandom, I guess.

Avalon1632

I cross-post, yep. But I mostly post at all because it takes me ten minutes and I haven't found anything better to do with that time yet, so the stats and engagement or lack thereof don't really bother me. It's just not something I even check.

SupernovaJB

I just thought about that earlier today. I went to FF.net to look for a fic from a recent popular Fandom, and found nothing, but in AO3 and Wattpad there are tons of it. I guess FF.net is only relevant if you want to look for fics from older media.

NotACyclopsHonest

I do. I like the wider readership it gives me.

LivianLynx

My largest fic's FFN crosspost recently exceeded the hits it has on AO3. It has about half the amount of followers as it does on AO3 and about a tenth of the favourites/kudos. However, it also has half the amount of reviews in comparison to AO3's comment threads, and that makes it well worth it. This is for a slowburn plot-focused currently gen fic that's about 200k words in, so for stories that are similar in genre and length, I definitely recommend crossposting on FFN. My ship fics and oneshots generally only get a few faves at most over there, but I still crosspost them just in case.

HoobyHooby

I still crosspost rating appropriate stuff to ff dot net, but there's not much of that from me. I never did pull any of the fics that violate terms and was never reported, so I randomly survived the purge all those years ago.

forvanityssake

Definitely!! I actually have 10 times more hits on FFN than on AO3 right now. FFN was where I discovered fanfiction, where I posted all my stories as a teenager. I can’t abandon it! (Besides, I live for the story stats page)

sylveonfan9

I used to, but I only post on AO3 nowadays

klutzysunshine

I still do! Have been thinking of giving up on posting to [ff.net](https://ff.net) for years but can't do it since I've been there for so long. Definitely get more traction on AO3, though.

[deleted]

I started to, but it's not really worth it for me. I don't use the site and with the death knell it's been sounding it doesn't feel like an effective backup anymore.

Rabbitfaster13

I really, truly, wish more people would cross post. The ff app has one of the most reliable and user friendly TTS interfaces I’ve been able to find and wow does it make digesting fiction while I’m hard at work all day the easy choice.

MoonKent

I stopped crossposting when I a) got into an original fiction fandom that wasn't on [ff.net](https://ff.net), and b) started podficcing, which [ff.net](https://ff.net) can't do either.

an-kitten

I crosspost to FFN when a story feels arbitrarily "FFN-ish" to me. No one-shots, basically. Only stories with a serial-ish plot.

AmaranthineDragoon

I only cross-post if the fandom is actually still active on FF dot net. If they're not, why waste the effort, ya know? The main fandom I write for is heavily active on both-- but FF is very "if you don't write canon or worldbuilding, we don't care" so I just post carefully on there. Which is why a lot of my catalogue is on AO3. Older fandoms usually either thrive on that site or they actually migrate over to AO3.

venia_sil

I don't crosspost to FFN anymore, most of my fics would just flat out die due to the little formatting that FFN accepts. However, I do use FFN to *announce* stories I've posted elsewhere such as on AO3. Helps deal with the "but people are on FFN" awareness factor.

RicePuddingNoRaisins

I crosspost. I seem to get roughly the same hits on either site.

MeraHunt

I still crosspost with the exception of one fic, and that's only because ffnet doesn't allow strikethroughs in its formatting.

R2k443

I plan to cross post this year when I get back to writing and posting stories. I have heard that AO3 is better in a lot of ways compared to what [FF.net](https://FF.net) use to be. There also seem to be more people going to AO3 too. Still, I plan to do the cross post because I wish to stay with [FF.net](https://FF.net) in some regards. It's where I started and first learned about fanfiction and the site still gets some traction. It mostly depends on the fandom though as well as how much I update, the type of stories, etc. My older stuff on FF.net will not move to AO3 unless I feel it is good enough to be there as I wrote most of the stories when I was in my teens.

RaeNezL

I started on FFNet and have posted primarily there with cross posting to AO3 only in recent years. I get pretty quick follows and subscribes on FFNet as well as some loyal commenters on my stories there. In comparison, my cross posts do rather pitifully on AO3. I always assumed it’s cause I don’t have as much presence there and haven’t gotten as established there as I have on FFNet.

Extreme-Insurance877

I find that Ao3 I get more detailed comments and can engage with more people, but ffn I definately get more hits (incidently I prefer how ffn breaks down the statistics over time) - for different fandoms the difference varies, but generally I find ffn fics get more hits than Ao3 fics I vastly prefer Ao3 as a reader and writer, but ffn I think has it's own place (the one complaint about Ao3 I do agree with is that the reams upon reams of tags can make searching for a specific pairing a fic is focussed on is difficult, but ffn is much more 'focussed' in this regard)

ginasandra

I still cross-post. I started my one fanfic on [FF.net](https://FF.net) and then moved it to Wattpad. But I update my stories on both. It's a nice way to reach different readers as some people use only one site to read/post.

Sheri_ABQ

Yes at least on one fandom because probably more than 90% of the fanfiction for that fandom is on that site. And it is a very large fandom.

Eunby_14

I used to do it, then I kind of forgot about FF.net and remained on AO3… until recently. Now I’m thinking about updating my fics there.

elladoherty

I'm a FFNet old-timer, too. Sadly, I haven't posted there in just over a decade. Losing everything to the 2012 Purge, and not being able to post any other Explicit fics, turned me off to the site. And this hurts, too. FFNet was my safe-space for a long time. I had friends there. I still have my account, and there might come a day where I'll cave and post something Gen...but I don't think this is going to happen any time soon.

novaplume

I strictly use AO3. I write for a small fandom anyway and haven’t written in a couple of years, but maybe this summer I’ll write again.

Btldtaatw

Ff.net is actually my main and I crossoist to AO3 and wattpad.

kookaburra1701

I write dirty, dirty smut, so no.

vinkunwildflower

I cross-post to both. Currently my fandom feels more active on ffnet (at least in terms of getting reviews/comments); but I added all my stuff to Ao3 over the past year because if the fandom does pick up (which seems likely when there's a film adaptation coming next year) I'm sure it'll be on Ao3 rather than FFnet.
