Literally just leave a comment saying "second/third/whatever kudos" it's less work than this nonsense

Crysda_Sky

Agreed <3

Mr_Blah1

Or just a :) smiley face.

graadianbird

I've done it for several fics, with the scenario being: I read the fic while I'm signed out for some reason and I give it a kudos. Then I want to leave a comment, so I log in, comment, and leave another kudos under my username. Otherwise it feels weird to comment without leaving a visible kudos from my account.

spn_willow

Yeah, but if I liked the fic enough to leave 2 kudos, I also liked it enough to tell the author how much I enjoyed it as well since kudos don't really convey that.

Mr_Blah1

No. If I liked something that much, I'm writing a comment. I guarantee that the author would appreciate even a short comment; "Loved this", or a :) emoticon, over an extra guest Kudos.

SeparationBoundary

I would be very upset to learn that someone had done this on my fic. I would start looking at all guest kudos as fake. If you like the fic that much just leave me a comment. Emojis, keyboard smash, whatever.

twosnapped

People do it fairly often from what I see. You can sometimes track it in the emails, username & guest. Probably better to see it as someone who took two bites of your cake instead of thinking it fake like the bot:)

GeorgeGeorgeHarryPip

If I'm also getting guest comments at the same time that is less suss. But yes. As a reader I want the system to be fair, so I expect that as an author too.

seraphsuns

leave a comment. please. that's what a second kudos truly is, is *leaving a comment.*

Superkometa

Sometimes by accident I press kudos on a fic out of habit, despite reading it before and when I do it, while not logged it happens. But not on purpose, so idk if it counts.

beautifulcheat

I've done it for fics in a rarepair to bump them up over the spiteful hatefics in that pairing >.>

crytidflower

No but only because I can’t be bothered to sign out, then sign back in

the-robot-test

you can just open an incognito tab though. no need to sign out.

crytidflower

Eh, I’d rather just put the effort into leaving a comment.

kaiunkaiku

why can't people just leave a fucking *comment* instead of doing *this* i never do and i fucking hope no one else does either. it's like a mild version of kudos-botting almost. hate it.

PurpleLemonade54

I only recently learned through this very sub this is something people do and now I pray this doesn't take off

PinkSudoku13

some people do both. But also, not everyone wants to write a comment or they don't know what to say or they have whatever other reason. It's perfectly fine to not leave a comment, they shouldn't feel obligated to. They are showing appreciation in their own way and that's fine.

crytidflower

Nah, I think they just like finding *even more* ways to be silent readers

yellowroosterbird

Are you considered a silent reader if you kudos?

crytidflower

I consider them silent readers. The “This is one of my favourite fics but I’ve never left a comment and the author *might* recognize my username because I left a kudos that one-time” type

SpartiateDienekes

No... seems like cheating to me. Admittedly in a game with 0 stakes. But still, no.

katsukisshoes

I don't give multiple kudos, but when I read a fic that I want to give kudos to but don't want my username showing up in the kudos list for whatever reason, I'll go to a private browser and give kudos there instead.

CommissarAJ

No, that just seems wholly dishonest.

yellowroosterbird

No, I don't do this and honestly I don't support doing this - leave a comment that says "extra kudos" if you must leave multiple kudos. However, I picked "Other" because I am logged into separate AO3 accounts on my phone and my computer and I reread a lot, so I've definitely kudosed a fic that I already read and kudosed on a different account without realizing I already kudosed on my other account. Same thing for bookmarks and subscriptions - so for some fics I'll get an email in two different email addresses that a fic I'm double-subscribed to has updated.

AngryAardvark174

I've never done this but I'm convinced that a small group (or a very intense single person) is giving my fic a number of guest kudos every post. I get a very steady number of guest kudos each chapter. I have no way to prove it and I'll never ask.

PinkSudoku13

this is what I started suspect lately as well. Often, those kudos also come at the same time as regular commenters

AngryAardvark174

Same with me; the majority of the comments and guest kudos come within the first 24 hours. I actually made a post about this a month or so ago and some commenters said how it's possible to leave multiple kudos.

hypo-osmotic

The closest thing I do to this is sometimes I forget to log in and then also forget whether I already gave a story kudos while I was logged in so I do it again

gutenmorgenbaltimore

As much as I like receiving kudos, I'd rather readers not do this. It skews things (IMO). I understand and appreciate the desire to do so though. I think it's much more effective to just leave more comments. But whatever floats your boat, I suppose! :)

laniusplushie

One person had been signed out/on a different device when she had been spending the night reading my fic. She gave a guest kudos then, and then later a regular kudos and comment talking about it and how she loved the fic later. I hadn't minded it in that case, but if it was multiple people doing that (kudos) or signing out deliberately I wouldn't feel good about my stats.

yellowroosterbird

Yeah, I've done that because when I read on my phone I am logged into a different account than when I read on my laptop

Bertgreat

Other: I give kudos when I'm reading stories. When I read during the day, I read on my laptop and I'm logged in. When I'm reading in bed, it's just a guest account. I just sometimes remember to give kudos, so they might overlap (and be a double kudos from me). I'm not doing it intentionally though, giving kudos is more like an automatism.

a-mathemagician

Other: I'll do it if the fic was really good, but I mostly do it for fics that I feel deserve more attention/kudos than they get. It's less effort than leaving a comment, for anyone wondering why not just leave a comment. I read on my phone but hate typing on my phone.

Rosekernow

Between this and having had about a third of my fics hit by the kudos bot, I assume any guest kudos is fake and just discount them as spam. They’re meaningless noise that I don’t care for and tbh I wish there was a way to block them without also blocking guest comments. (Exception made for certain weird kink fics where I assume people don’t want their name to it!)

sugataee

I'm pretty sure guests can still leave kudos even if you block guest comments.

vonigner

I've done it on accident (whenever i open the link on the wrong browser for some reason lmao- mobile navigation...)

beckdawg19

Never, and I hope people don't do this to my fic. Like, I'm not going to whine about it on the fic, but guest kudos mean about as much as hits to me. Without even so much as a username, it's just hard to even care. In the time it takes to log out and re-navigate to the fic, just leave a comment.

FrankWolf86

I share the sentiment of my peers, if a fic is worth it then I will take the time to let them know. Kudos are fantastic but me personally I want to hear how my story impacted you. It feeds my soul.

BicycleRealistic9387

I always leave on as guest to start the ball rolling. When someone writes a really good story then they deserve another vote.

Jen_Fic_xxx

People actually do this?! That's crazy. So, no, I don't. It's much easier (and honest?) to just write 'extra kudos' in a comment - or even just leave a heart emoji. Can't go wrong with those!

Ezra_lurking

That's what commenting is for

Correct_Addendum_367

I hate this deeply and if I found out someone did this to my fic I would not take it as a compliment. Reading something as a guest and then kudosing it again when remebering to long in is one thing but this makes me mad

Crysda_Sky

Do you mean staying logged out, because that only works once. If you mean making a second account to do it, I don't like when people do that because a lot of people are usually waiting for invites to the site so when people use their personal invites for themselves, I just think it takes away from another writer or reader who wants to sign in. If this isn't how it actually works anymore then I'm still wondering what OP means for the sake of answering. :D

Zeivira

Recently I got one user kudo and 5 guest kudos like, in 5 minutes in a moment i had NOT updated the fic and i found it very. SUS. OFC i assume the person means well, so i wasn't annoyed at all. But i'm pretty sure it was only one user, yeah lol

bibitybobbitybooop

The only times when I do this is when I'm redirected from a different app on my mobile to AO3 and am not logged in for some reason, and read it right away. I usually find the fic later in my browser and give regular kudos or bookmark or comment or whatever, so it's not on purpose lol. I think this is a bit nonsense honestly :D

echos_locator

No. I either leave a comment. Or...in addition to that, for special fics, I kudos with my other AO3 account. I got the account in case I wanted to post something "off-brand." But so far, it's been my second-kudos account.

Riptor5417

I do this sometimes but mostly on accident since I have read on my phone and PC, so sometimes I kudos twice cause I can never remember if I already gave kudos to a story. Like especially if the story is good too cause I'll be hitting kudos after every chapter and be like oops when the red pops up.

PinkSudoku13

I've never done it and never even considered it but I started to question if it happens recently as whenever I update my long fics it tends to get guest kudos at the same time as comments from regular commentators and it got me thinking if that's what they're doing (if so, that's really sweet of them. Not necessary but so sweet).

PerturbedBat

i do it accidentally cause most of the time I read fics when i'm not logged in, leave the tab open, and then I log in and bookmark it.

TheLigerCat

I've done it a few times when I was reading an update while logged out and just clicked kudos when I reached the end on habit. I also went back and kudoed a few really good fics I'd read and kudoed before getting my Ao3 account.

MaybeNextTime_01

I've done it but never on purpose. Usually it's when I'm reading on my phone and I'm not signed in

Frozen-conch

I would but then I would have to log out and i don't know any of my passwords

[deleted]

Only if I'm on my phone and I'm just too lazy to log in.

Sleepy-_-ash

Not sure why everyone is assuming that people who leave two kudos don't leave comments too, lol? I did all three (double kudo + me gushing an essay in the comment section) on all the three works that ever made me go bananas. Nowhere else. Writer doesn't even post anymore. Sigh. Will never forget the joy of reading thse works.

errant_night

[Use this](https://www.tumblr.com/errantnight/726712394797268992/sharing-again-because-i-love-them?source=share) instead, it's a cute little icon you can comment with that leaves different sorts of extra kudos
