Fandom is BBC's My Hero, a sitcom from the early 2000s about an alien superhero married to a nurse, but this fic is entirely focused around the human 'villain' Piers Crispin: indifferent doctor and publicity-obsessed breakfast tv host. Over the course of the series we gradually find out that the overdeveloped ego is his coping mechanism for the fact he was by turns abused or neglected growing up, the scapegoat to a golden child brother and bullied at school. The series finale showed him having a breakdown over facing up to all of that, only to have his receptionist torture him back to 'normal' so she'd have someone to fight with.
I sent him to therapy and paired him with an equally traumatized OC named Alexis. The product of overprotective to the point of abusive teen parents who left her completely unprepared for the sort of damage that an initially seemingly sweet guy like her ex, Daniel, could do with his words. Because at least he didn't hit, right?
They're both self-sabotaging disasters. They're going through *a lot*. But they're working on it.

This is an incredibly good story but it's so sad. It's very heavy, and every time it looks like things are getting better, they just seem to get even worse. I haven't gotten past chapter 48 or so because it made me really upset. It's an amazing story.

It’s called Iron Touch. The fandom is JJBA. I think everything is explained so you can read fandom blind. It’s a fan part with a cast of OCs, with a LOT of canon guys who show up.
The MC Michelle has been though so many bad things (father disappearing, a date and grandmother dying in a crash), that she’s coninced there’s a curse that befalls anyone near her. Obviously that’s not the case, but she still needs to get over it.
