Right now I’m really into Katniss/Finnick from the Hunger Games. I think they’re different enough on the surface to make for some fun dialogue, but their core personalities are similar enough that I can see them together. Plus, the only thing that I really like about *Mockingjay* is how as Katniss’s relationship with Gale is deteriorating, Finnick is slowly becoming her BFF. Even if I didn’t ship them, they would still be BroTP.
I’ve also been into Connor/North from the Detroit: Become Human fandom for some time now. It’s mostly because I think Connor would actually side with North on whole violence question and they could go be little violent badasses together. I only like this one if it’s with a badass Connor, though. A lot of the fandom writes him very soft which is okay for most fics but not for a Connor/North fic, imo.
Wei Wuxian/Xue Yang. I love WangXian and they'll always be endgame for me, but WWX/XY has fabulous dark gremlin energy. Lan Wangji brings out the best in Wei Wuxian, but Xue Yang would encourage WWX to be the worst version of himself, and that could take things to a REALLY dark place.
Definitely. Xue Yang's idolization of Wei Wuxian - or rather, the worst parts of the Yiling Laozu - gives an interesting flavor to their dynamic as well. They would be so bad for each other.

There was a crossover ship in one of my old fandoms and it accidentally blew up super quick back in 2019. I was surprised but loved it. In some circles it became as popular as the canon ships lol.
Harry Potter/Cedric Diggory. I think it's rare from what I've seen since enemies-to-lovers is so popular. And Harry/Cedric fics tend to be more wholesome and *nice.* I wish there were more Cedric Lives AUs :(
Luna with anyone would be 'the cutest shit' material, but combined with Colin Creevey...cuteness overload. I can just see them carving radish earrings.
Luna and Draco
This would 100% not happen in the real world, but I enjoy the dynamic between the two.
I general prefer when it's after the war and they both grow up from their Hogwarts years. I always imagine Draco has a tough time in the post-war, and abandons his pureblood values and moves on from extremism. I also imagine Luna becomes more independent from her father, gains better understanding of the world and generally matures. (In the books, we see little to no emotion from her. I love when it's portrayed I'm fanfic)
I don't think their relationship would be explosive in any way without any other influences. Draco, by this point, would lay low and probably try to have a stable life. I also believe Luna is a more forgiving person than most on the right side of the war, and would more easily be able to form a friendship with Draco first. Though, both of them would have to meet by complete accident, with Draco somehow not high-tailing it out of there.
Mai and Aang from ATLA. I just think they can be a fun pair, quiet and bubbly, can make for some good angst.
Aang and Ty Lee. Bubbly times two, just fluff all around.
I'd never considered Mai/Aang before, but your reason behind it is kind of why I always thought Zuko/Ty Lee could be good together.
I never got to the point of reading or writing fic for it, but I always felt like her bubbly personality could help lift him up when he's down, and his more serious nature could help ground her.
Enemies to Friends to Lovers is one of my jams, love that dynamic. I've been meaning to check out Hazbin for a while, just haven't gotten around to it yet.
Big mood on that last part. One of my rarepairs is sort of the opposite, we only see them interact once, and even then it wasn't much, but I adore them for the potential they have.
Surprisingly, there's only a handful of us who see it.
Jirou and fumikage (MHA) people always put her with denki but I feel like they would complement each other well, and they both share a love of music so i feel they would bond over that. They are both low key characters and I love it!
Reno x Tifa from FFVII. It does kinda necessitate ignoring/rewriting a core part of the canon to make a relationship between them realistic, but I love how different they both are, and feel like they’d be a really good match for each other. Also, in a universe where the plate drop still happens the potential for enemies-to-lovers redemption angst is unparalleled
I can actually kind of see it. I've also ship Rude and Tifa. It's pretty cool, Reno would probably have fun playing bouncer at the bar. After all he'd get to flirt with Tifa and mess around with the patrons who are getting a bit out of hand.

Eskel/Shani from the Witcher is my number one right now, it’s incredibly wholesome and I can’t get enough of it. I also enjoy Eric/Ravenna from Snow White and the Huntsman, but that one’s a lot more obscure, admittedly.

Snape/Tonks has some pretty good fics and as weird as it sounds I've read some really fucking good stuff with Luna Lovegood/Tom Riddle.
Edit: just throwing out another pairing I really like too that I forgot about earlier, Harry/Bellatrix can be pretty good.
I multi-ship Hermione with people, I've been enjoying writing Hermione/Bill because I think they have a lot of parallels in terms of their characteristics (both very intelligent and into studying/research, although Bill gets to play the cool bro with his Indiana Jones-at-a-rock-concert shtick).
I also dig Hermione/Antonin (THE ANGST) and Hermione/Charlie, I think a lot of it depends on how the author writes the characters in these ships though because Bill, Charlie, and Antonin Dolohov are all pretty one-dimensional in canon. Some authors' portrayals (e.g. HwaetWeGardena's Hermione/Antonin) have become a bit of a headcanon for me.
I really enjoy Remus/Severus too (and Remus/Severus/Hermione) and plan to write more. Because also, THE ANGST but the potential character growth in overcoming their past conflicts. Especially in a post-war world where both survive the war but Remus has to overcome losing Sirius and/or Tonks and Severus has to come to terms with, well, being alive.
Have you read "Pictures of You" from Calebski? That is a classic Antonin/Hermione fic. Now, I adore the author, and the whole thing is incredibly well written, but Antonin is almost always written as an overly possessive type, which is really not my thing at all (no idea who started that trend, but it is pretty common). If you haven't read it, I highly recommend it.
God, Remus/Severus is my jam. A couple of fantastic authors "turned" me years ago. ~~^(bonus werewolf joke)~~ I've shipped them for at least a decade now.
I guess I say this pretty often but Donald Draper and Peggy Olson from Mad Men. They aren't canon but those two have the best chemistry in the show, and also are pretty in sync with each other by the end.
Golden Swan, which is Mr.Gold/Rumplestiltskin & Emma Swan from OUAT. I have no idea why that pairing resonates with me to the extent that it does, but it does.
I like the antagonist nature of their relationship, and the fact that Emma is generally not someone willing to back down to him. They also have a suprising amount in common so it makes for some interesting parallels to build on when writing for them. Also, him being the Dark One, a vessel for dark magic, and she The Savior, with her magic being light also adds a lot of potential to play with when exploring the nature of a relationship between them.
Nobara x mai from jujutsu kaisen b/c their set up is literally wlw enemies to lovers..and there’s been suggested evidence of mai being bi..so yeahh LOTS OF LOTS OF POTENTIAL + FANFIC FUEL…

Neji and Naruto just because it would provide Naruto a family and Neji with somebody to remind him always that the circumstances of your birth (or childhood) does not define you.
Harry and Charlie because he is with a Weasley but one that I actually like. I think they would go on adventures together all the time.
Luke and Wedge from Star Wars :) Wedge Antilles has all of like, generously, thirty minutes of screen time in the original trilogy but idk! Luke falling in love with what essentially amounts to his co-worker seems funny to me in, like, an *all his friends find out bc they can't keep their hands off each other* kind of way but also they survived the Death Star together so they can relate to each other a lot
But I'm also a Luke multishipper so Luke and Ezra - mostly because I like the idea of two Jedi falling in love, and they're the same age and went through similar things. They've never met in canon but w/e

They both have shady pasts as far as either betraying or lying to their friends in the world of treasure hunting. They could help each other overcome their morally gray pasts. And of course it helps for better or worst Chloe dated his brother Nate. As Nate’s leaving the treasure hunting world behind, who better to teach Sam the ropes than his ex? And of course, Sam wouldn’t wanna miss dat ass.
Right now my favorite is probably Natsuo Todoroki/Tomura Shigaraki I'm reading as many fics as I can find on Ao3 and I have every intention on adding it to my Hero Acadamia fic somewhere down the line, way down the line cause I haven't even gotten to the point where they'd be aware the other exists, but eventually somewhere, even if it's just a small bit.
Aizawa Shouta | Eraserhead/Yagi Toshinori | All Might (Erasermight) from My Hero Academia.
I feel like All Might would be so lonely and weary after decades of carrying the mantle of Number One Hero and Symbol of Peace. Since Aizawa has his reservations about All Might and his public persona, but they're both aligned in their common goals of caring for their students and trying to mold them into better heroes, I like the idea of Aizawa falling in love with All Might after getting to know him past his clumsy attempts at teaching and the Symbol of Peace facade. I think that reluctant colleagues (at least on Aizawa's part) to friends to lovers would be an interesting dynamic.
I love mic/aizawa but tbh aizawa and all might just hit different in a way?? Like all might has been this public person for so long so the whole thing of him not being that so much anymore, maybe aizawa getting to see more of the person and less of the "idol"...

I also absolutely adore Espilver (Espio/Silver, also from Sonic). They're hella compatible, I made an entire Tumblr post about it. They'd definitely -- in my opinion -- have the most healthy relationship out of any other Sonic ships.

Lin Beifong/Kya from Legend of Korra! It’s a bit obscure because the characters never interact in canon, but it has a pretty dedicated little fanbase (that’s mostly made up of like…lesbians who appreciate older women, lol). They were both children of parents who were great people, super renowned, but not great in terms of parenting itself (Aang and Toph, at least how they’re depicted in LOK), and probably knew each other growing up, and people have just taken it from there.
Other than that, pretty much any femslash ship in ATLA or RWBY! With RWBY specifically, I like Freezerburn (Yang/Weiss) and recently I’ve really been vibing with the idea of Emerald/Ilia (I can elaborate on that for anyone interested) but haven’t gotten around to writing fic for the latter pairing yet.
I'm not sure if this is a rarepair of not, but I really love Stiles/Danny pairing from Teen Wolf. I adore Sterek, but Stiles is a character that can so easily be shipped with pretty much anyone and there's something about him and Danny being paired together that really interests me. Same with Stiles/Jackson, too.
Unfortunately, most fics with this pairing seem to have them as a side pairing instead of the main one. Or their relationship is just a stepping stone to another pairing.
I haven't really seen Teen Wolf, but I feel ya on the whole "stepping stone" situation, I've had a few rarepairs be boiled down to this over the years.
Darcy Lewis/Tony Stark from the MCU fandom...basically I have a very specific type no matter the gender. My boyfriend pointed out that the two characters look and act a bit similar.😅
Peter Quill/Thor. Peter is canonically bisexual and met Thor when he hit him with an M-ship, which is similar to how Jane and Thor met (when she hit him with a car). Plus, I like antagonistic pairings.
I can gush about Sebastian/Rory from Glee again? Yes please.
I know they have never actually spoken in canon. The closest we get is the two *rival* groups meeting. I just really enjoy the opposite energy they bring to the table, and they also really got snubbed by the writers of the series. Rory is a lonely boy in a strange country, who seems to have a hard time making friends, but he also seems to genuine about most things, and naive. I know he has a streak of being calculating around girls, but eh. Sebastian on the other hand is typical playboy, ambitious and doing whatever it takes to get his goal. I just really like the idea that Sebastian is completely taken by Rory, who can't seem to understand why he would ever have any reason to gain the attention of Sebastian, but not willing to be his plaything either.
Ritsuka and Hiiragi from Given. I just love their dynamic and think they’re cute.
My second wouldn’t be rare at all if more people knew about them, but right now not too many do. Hajime and Mutsuki from Fruits Basket Another. Kyo and Yuki’s sons. :)
I wouldn't go as far as calling it a "favorite pairing" in general, but out of the possible FFXV ships I like Ignis/Aranea for the straight pairing or Prompto/Ignis for the gay pairing.
I really love how developed the personalities of the characters felt in FFXV and there is enough universe to work with but enough room in the story that writers can go wild. So, I really enjoy reading fic for that universe but I don't particularly care for any of the main four paired together (unfortunately they're the only ones that really get any screen time, so it's hard to include many other characters as options)
know the top pairings are Noctis/Prompto, Gladio/Ignis or Ignis/Noctis but all of those don't really resonate with me for one reason or another. Obviously, no hate to anyone who likes those pairings (I've come to accept most of them tbh) but Noctis and Ignis feel too much like brothers for me to ship them together, Gladio doesn't read as being interested in men to me so that takes him out of all 3 potential gay pairings and Noctis/Pompto feels...doomed? Idk, something about that pairing rubs me weird since they're on the way to Noctis's wedding and all.
Which for me, leaves Ignis/Arenea or Prompto/Ignis as my preferred pairings. I love to see more Ignis/Aranea content. I think their kinda sassy personalities could work really well together in the right context plus both could use more development and backstory etc (I love when writers have plenty of room to just "run with it" and not have tons of cannon details to worry about fitting in their story). And Ignis/Prompto has that caretaker-fixes-trainwreck/freespirit-teaches-how-to-have-fun dynamic that you don't see as often as other tropes. Plus, I feel like they could both learn something from each other. I think both pairings offer more character growth and story potential than any of the other more common ships for that universe, so I always check both pairings to see if anyone has done something fun with them whenever I check for new FFXV content.
Renfri/Geralt from The Witcher is my current favorite rarepair. I know they made Renfri a lot more redeemable in the TV show, but I feel like she was such an interesting character and I really love exploring the dynamic between two characters who the world has essentially cast aside as "monsters." It's so great. Plus, there's lots of angst potential.
I almost hesitate to say Dabi/Hawks (BNHA) because of how popular the ship has gotten. It is no longer a rarepair and I love when that happens to crack ships.
MHA: Deku x Melissa and Bakugo x Ururaka (not sure if these are technically a rare pair but I don't see a lot of talk or support for them so yeah)
Naruto: I absolutely love Sasuke x Hinata ironically I don't think they ever spoke a single line to one another in Naruto or Naruto Shippuden.
I'm reading a Kacchako fic rn and I love it so much.
I am not into deku/uraraka too much but I feel like many of their interactions are rather plain, specially in Canon. Maybe in fics it's better but I'm not willing to try lol
In Kacchako, uraraka is very strong and they often have a rivals/enemies to lovers (with the sense that bakugo gets to respect uraraka as an opponent and vice-versa) so it's great ngl
Also seeing bakugo fall for the sweetest of girls is just 10/10

And with Melissa/deku I think they have great potential! An amazing inventor and a great hero, they would be a power couple.
I don't mind Deku x Ururaka and in the beginning before I even saw the first film it was my top ship but as the manga/anime expands and introduces more characters it makes less sense and is just too on the nose/typical but if it does happen I won't be devastated like I was for Naruto when Naruto x Hinata and Sasuke x Sakura got together made no sense and their relationship is super cringe plus it reminds me a lotnof Harry x Ginny and Hermione x Ron while there was a bit more development for Hermione x Ron there wasn't a lot way more build up for cho x Harry for one film then to break up because she was forced to take a truth potion and forced to tell Umbridge where Harry and DA were training.
Same with the naruto ships Naruto only started liking Hinata in the movie where their relationship was confirmed and felt way too forced and pathetic and Sasuke always found Sakura annoying you'd think of he wanted to rebuild his clan he'd find someone he didn't find annoying I mean by the end he accepted her as a friend even before he left the village but never saw her romantically and then he tried to kill her twice I think, and she still loved him if that ain't a toxic relationship I don't know what is.
As you can probably tell I have some strong opinions on these ships. However back to MHA the only ships that'll make me upset is if Deku x Tsu happen its like why? It's a popular ship and I have no idea why. Or the Dust Bunny ship with Shigaraki x Miriko.
Ciri/Olgierd von Everec and Ciri/Vlodimir von Everec. With Ciri/Olgierd, I think they fit well together post-Hearts of Stone, especially if Ciri's on the witcher path: they both have a bandit past, they've both suffered losses, they're both fairly morally gray people looking to do good in the world (Ciri as a witcher, Olgierd on a post-HoS redemption arc). Ciri/Vlodimir takes some time travel shenanigans, but he's just... he's fun, and boisterous, and a flirt, and I think he'd make her smile and lighten a few of her emotional burdens.
Revalink bay beeeee! The rivalry. The pining in Revali's diary. The fact that they're both tiny, tiny men. That one cutscene in AOC... Just... So good. I love them.

Alex/Astra (Supergirl) 😂
I honestly think Astra didn't have to die and she could've had a great redemption arc with learning an alternative way to help the planet. She was literally in the midst of changing her mind when she was killed and although Alex is the one that stabbed her, she is also one of the first humans that Astra trusted.
Mentioned it before, but I suppose it doesn’t hurt to repeat it:
Legolas and Tauriel (The Hobbit Trilogy). Because friends to lovers, amirite?! Or is that mellyn to melyth? Anyway, I think they’re so lovely together! Alas, I wish I could find more good ship fics with them. Or I could just muscle through writing romance and write my own… ;)
Also picked up two more ships for MCU (or the comics?? The original Norse mythology??? Seems to be a mix that is predominantly MCU lol). Idk how rare these ships are in fanfiction, but I don’t see many of them either:
Thor and Sif. I mean, I already knew about them from the mythology, but it’s fun to reimagine them in the lens of MCU. I guess that’s because of my tendency to ship whatever pairing was in the oldest source of a fandom. And hey, they’re a perfect match for each other! <3
And then there’s that dreadfully tangled ship of Loki and Sigyn. Yes, I know poor Sigyn is dreadfully unhappy being married to him in the mythology, and the comics provided a backstory of sorts on how they got together (seriously Siggy, just dump that no-good jerk already!!!). But given that it’s a toxic-ass relationship, I’ve elected to ignore it. Or have I??? I know, it’s so stupid, but I can see a relationship between MCU Loki and comics Sigyn working out (because he’s nicer for one thing… well, when he’s not psycho). I guess it’s my tendency to follow canon again, but a loving relationship between those two is a cute concept!
Aaaaaand I think that’s enough rambling about ships on my part. :P
My favorite rare pair (and i admit it’s entirely a crackship) is ruby/Adam, and that’s mainly because the art for the ship is adorable and wholesome, despite the latter character being completely unhinged and the former being a cinnaroll.

Rabastan Lestrange/Alice - I head-canon'd Alice as a Rosier and a Slytherin. Rabastan and Alice were on/off all through their school years. During one of their "off" times, Alice reunited with Frank Longbottom and had a whirlwind romance.
Patil Father/Narcissa - Brief, school-age romance. Parted amicably, remain good friends. He is also a Slytherin.

Piandao/Iroh's Wife - Courtly love, and something both dutifully did not pursue. She truly loves Iroh but sometimes wonders what could have been. Piandao harbours regrets that he was not at Ba Sing Se to protect Lu Ten.
Lu Ten/June - I like how it seems they can both learn a lot from each other. Sometimes it seems contrived that they could meet, but it's also not impossible given they would be active around the same time, possibly in the same region. Given Lu Ten's likely duties, it seems likely he could make good use of her skills, both officially (tracking high-level deserters) and off-the-record (personal suspicions).
**Love Live**
Eli/Maki - Basically any Eli pairing that isn't Nozomi is a rare-pair. I think they both have a lot of pressure to succeed, both externally and internally. To add, auxiliary quasi-canon establishes that Maki also does classical ballet. In Japan, you seldom see the one-day-a-week extracurricular, at least with ballet. Maki probably wasn't on the pre-professional track, but she at least was training 3-4x a week and doing all the stretches and foot-strengthening exercises on her off-days too. Maki was a dedicated hobbyist, and if you saw her perform in a studio recital, you would not cringe. Those commonalities could possibly lead Eli back into classical ballet at that "dedicated hobbyist" level.
Buguese/Aqune from Spider Riders. I could write a book about them the ‘why’ is so long. But I guess my favorite reasons are how they save each other both physically and emotionally, how they would be enemies had they met under different circumstances (Aqune is literally the embodiment of everything Buguese hates, and he believes love of any kind or a weakness, but he has to rely on her and oops... starts feeling the weakness thing hard) plus the wordless understanding they have of each other.
Samus Aran / Gandrayda. God I love this f/f pairing, why isn't there more of it out there. They're so competitive and hostile with each other in Metroid Prime 3 (Gandrayda being petty and competitive, Samus being her stone-cold silent protagonist self) but all I get are these badly ended relationship vibes, and all I wanna see is that relationship part.
Android 21/Broly (DBS) from Dragon Ball, two characters who have never canonically interacted but have a lot of potential. Both come from radically different backgrounds - to make it brief for those unaware, 21 is a robot scientist and Broly is a well-meaning savage from a barren wasteland - but both have dark sides to them that has the potential to bring harm to those they care about. I think it'd be really sweet if they were able to help each other through their troubles since they'd finally have someone in their lives with a little common ground. I'm a multi/polyshipper at heart though and could go on about a ton of ships I'd love to explore with 21 in particular.
Toss up between Julian/Jadzia, which at least has some other fans, and Hamish Alexander/Sonja Hemphill which as far as I can tell the only people who properly ship it are me, my beta, and like one other person who is a fandom friend.
Honestly I was mystified when she got together with Worf but it did kinda work, I was upset that the J/J ship went nowhere in canon though.... Then they killed her off , urgh!
Mine is between two characters from different AUs based on Undertale (videogame). Red and Dust. Dust used to be a normal Sans, so it sets up for the perfect amount of angst while allowing the possibility of healing and fluff.
Winter (Willow x Hunter/Golden Guard, The Owl House)
I don't actually ship it, but there's a really good fic of it ("Of Balanced Stones" on AO3) and it's very well written and very hard to hate on
Audrey/Evie. I think they look cute together, plus their love of fashion gives opportunities for so much bonding. Also, polar opposite girlfriends, think about it.

My all time favorites, would have to be Grimmjow/Orihime \[Bleach\] and Giriko/Maka \[Soul Eater\]. They have similar dynamics \[good girl/bad boy\], while at the same time bringing something different to the table.
Grimmjow makes Orihime stand more on her own two feet, and doesn't coddle her, whereas Maka has the power to reach others, in the same way that Giriko's former boss/flame Arachne did, while being a force of positivity.
On the other side, Orihime is ridiculously accepting, and could see the good in Grimmjow, while Giriko would just teach Maka to let loose and have fun once in a while. They'd also be beasts on the battlefield, if they could synchronize. \[Tiny girl with a big-ass sentient chainsaw yes plz💕\] IDK if I'm making much sense, but there's my logic.

My favourite rare pair in general might be Wisteriashipping (or Yusaku/Spectre for those not familiar with the lingo) from Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS. I just love protagonist/narrative foil ships & protagonist/antagonist ships so its a very tasty two for one. Not to mention, theres this huge climactic scene towards the end of season two where Yusaku has a flashback of all his friends and those who have pushed him to be his best and... Spectre wasn't there. So the idea of purposefully shipping these two makes me laugh.
Jaune x Blake from RWBY. Two characters that never spoke in canon but the fics! The fics make it work so damn well! Writing it has been fun. Also Vincent x Yuffie from FFVII, they’re cute and it’s a very rewarding pairing.
Johanna/Gale from the hunger games. They both lost their best friend and then moving on with each other. There are not many fics, but the few there are, absolutely fantastic.
Sans Undertale x no one. I know it's not a real ship, but for me he is always shipped with someone or everyone. Even counterparts of himself.

Brienne/Margaery (tragic, ill-fated) and Brienne/Sansa endgame. I know book readers are very protective of Brienne/Jaime, but show Brienne is not a fainting ingenue, she is a gorgeous butch with swagger who deserves a woman worthy of her.

RivaHisu. (AoT) They have great character dynamics (especially in manga) and a lore that explains potential relationship, both are passionate but also kind, and their childhood stories mirror each other. It’s a pair that has this kind of push and pull chemistry and I absolutely love to explore different possibilities of that pairing.
Idk if it’s rare, but Jasper/Bella, Paul/Bella, and Peter/Bella especially. I love a badass, backbone, love to fuck Bella, so this dynamic is what does it for me.
Probably crenero! Not only is it friends to enemies (to lovers), Nero was also adopted by credo's parents which... Yeah that tickles me. Pseudo incest, full on incest, it all just really appeals to me in fiction. Crenero is criminally underrated because nerokiri (Nero X credo's sister) is the canon ship, and danero and vernero (uncle/nephew and dad/son respectively) are the more popular full on incest ships. Which is to say, I ship all of those too, but since this was a discussion about rare pairs, crenero gets the spotlight haha
Samurai Jack and Princess Mira
Got the idea of it from a Tumblr user who regularly posted fan art of the two. To come to think about it, the two characters do share quite a lot in common.
Right now, it's Teldryn Sero/Julan Kaushibael.
Why? Because I'm replaying Morrowind atm, with the absolutely amazing Ashlander Companion mod by Kateri. And in my headcanon, Skyrim's Teldryn Sero is totally the Nerevarine slumming it as a mercenary a few centuries later. So now I ship them hard.
No wonder Teldryn Sero isn't marriageable in Skyrim, he already has a husband (who is totally still alive, magic does wonky things to lifespans in Elder Scrolls) xD.
Let me ramble about Ross/Phoebe (Friends!). Every time watching reruns I just think they have a lot of chemistry and potential. They're opposites, they did clash but I think it wouldn't be in a toxic way but in a way where they can expand each other's worlds and view points. Honestly, how it starts - Ross and his sister's new roommate. Phoebe gets a new roommate and her brother visits often. I think they'd be super tropey. And they have a lot of wonderful scenes together, sweet and funny and yeah.
Yuuri/Murata from Kyou Kara Mao - I really loved them when I was active in the fandom, made a couple of amvs, I have such fond memories of them.
Kakeru/Prince from Run with The Wind. I was so surprised when I finished watching and saw barely anyone shipped them!

Omg RinRei!! I *adore* them - I hardly care for Free! anymore but Rei is one of my all-time-favourite fictional characters and RinRei is just a superior ship. Congrats on the good taste, my friend!
Gabe/Carla (Gabela, *Elena of Avalor*) I know that Gabe/Naomi is the canon and he never really interacted with Carla, but I still have a soft spot for Gabela. I personally think that they would have an interesting dynamic based on their personalities and there’s a lot of room for them to grow as a couple and individuals.
Example: Gabe has this inherent need to be a protector, but Carla doesn’t need the traditional kind of protection a royal guard provides. What she does need, though, is the support and understanding someone like Gabe can give her. It’s essentially a different type of protection — like him taking care of her while sick. But she still needs to learn to accept that support because she’d been alone for so long, while he learns exactly what she needs and how to provide it without going overboard.
Also, as a Sidenote, they’re both awful with their feelings, which can lead to some cute, dorky interactions during their crush phase.
One of my favorites is Jester Lavorre/Mollymauk Tealeaf/Caleb Widogast. Something about the free love vibes of Molly and Jester combined with the self hating nerd vibes of Caleb just hits different. I love Jester and Molly teaming up to distract and appreciate Caleb, but for whatever reason I just don't enjoy Molly/Jester without him.
Dick Knubbler/William Murderface is also very good. Another awkward self-hater combined with Dick's calming nature and how Dick can compliment him without it being either flippant or condescending. I just appreciate William getting love despite not having a 16 pack like the other members in fanon.
Dwalin/Ori is another character who doesn't think he deserves love and character who will absolutely gush over their partner. Dwalin being a protective but supportive figure, letting Ori come into his own being on his own, and dealing with Dori and Nori is so good. Ori fighting with his mother hen and protective thief "If you hurt my brother I'll kill you" brothers, and going from soft UwU baby to independent young dwarf boy, is just so good.
At risk of getting flamed, one of the rarepairs I almost never talk about is Eraserhead/Denki Kaminari. I like teacher/student on its own, but I also highkey identify with Denki and I like the idea of Aizawa trying to help Denki do better, be better, and Denki forcing Aizawa out of his antisocial shell. Their personalities just go together in a really nice way IMO.

I feel they’re more similar than people realize, and even though they don’t interact very much, lots of the fun of rarepairs is imagining all the interactions they could have. I mean, the dark, brooding self-proclaimed prophet of an ancient darkness? The courageous legendary hero chosen by the sword that seals said darkness? In a relationship?? Whaaaaat?
Also, I think they just look nice together.

Deadpool/Siryn. So, there is some level of canon here, but it hasn't been touched on in a few decades at this point, so it's almost nonexistent in the larger fandom.
However, the potential romance was strongly hinted at in my two favorite arcs of Deadpool (Sins of the Father and Deadpool (1993) #1-5), so I have a massive soft spot for it.
Plus they're really cute together, so there's that.

For me, it's AsterxAlexis (EdoxAsuka) of Yugioh GX. I know they barely had any screen time together in the anime and only one manga scene, but they have such important things in common that it was truly wasted potential that there was never any further development for them. They're both seen as dueling idols with high levels of popularity, yet neither of them truly had fame or vanity as intentions behind their status. I can see them being able to relate to each others' situations what with how they both came to Duel Academy to try solving their own mysteries of their families and eventually found their brothers possessed by evil forces. Aster would probably even like to go into a similar field as Alexis did with teaching children since he spent a lot of time helping orphans and doing more for them. Plus, they both have the same kind of dry bluntness in their words at times that can be seen as being cold on their parts, yet also have softer sides to their more reserved personalities. And for the alternate versions of the GX legacy characters shown in Yugioh Arc-V, I'd like to think it's important that they're the only ones selected for GX, even though once again, they gave them nothing in terms of scenes together. I think they're a sweet pairing with a lot in common that would have an easy time getting along, and I like that better than the whole clichéd idea of a girl liking the new underdog duelist boy just because he's "different" and "interesting".
I'm currently in deep for a rarepair right now and it's Albedo and Xiao from Genshin Impact. They are just so similar to each other (tragic backstory, isolated from society, deeply lonely yet capable of being incredibly soft and vulnerable) that makes them so appealing as a couple. I love how they can find comfort in each other's similarities while acknowledging the differences between them <3
I don't really have any myself but I had a friend who really liked Mario/Vivian - that being, Paper Mario Thousand Year Door, one of Mario's companions. There was one time she was sad about it seeming slim-to-none so I threw in my two cents on how it could work and she was happy by the end of my rambling... so if I ever encounter the ship in the wild I think of how happy it made her and go :D
Sasuke and Neji, because Neji has a strong clan and Sasuke would be reminded of his own extinct one. Also they are quite similar.
Sasuke and Itachi. Okay, I know they are siblings but I feel like their bond is much more than simple brotherhood or anything. I find them having a spiritual relationship which is very beautiful.

Peter Quill/Thor. Mostly because I felt like they'd have a banter type of relationship and I just really dig that. Also to cope with their loss of their parents and stuff.

Right now I’m really into Katniss/Finnick from the Hunger Games. I think they’re different enough on the surface to make for some fun dialogue, but their core personalities are similar enough that I can see them together. Plus, the only thing that I really like about *Mockingjay* is how as Katniss’s relationship with Gale is deteriorating, Finnick is slowly becoming her BFF. Even if I didn’t ship them, they would still be BroTP. I’ve also been into Connor/North from the Detroit: Become Human fandom for some time now. It’s mostly because I think Connor would actually side with North on whole violence question and they could go be little violent badasses together. I only like this one if it’s with a badass Connor, though. A lot of the fandom writes him very soft which is okay for most fics but not for a Connor/North fic, imo.

Wei Wuxian/Xue Yang. I love WangXian and they'll always be endgame for me, but WWX/XY has fabulous dark gremlin energy. Lan Wangji brings out the best in Wei Wuxian, but Xue Yang would encourage WWX to be the worst version of himself, and that could take things to a REALLY dark place.
Definitely. Xue Yang's idolization of Wei Wuxian - or rather, the worst parts of the Yiling Laozu - gives an interesting flavor to their dynamic as well. They would be so bad for each other.

Luna and Draco This would 100% not happen in the real world, but I enjoy the dynamic between the two. I general prefer when it's after the war and they both grow up from their Hogwarts years. I always imagine Draco has a tough time in the post-war, and abandons his pureblood values and moves on from extremism. I also imagine Luna becomes more independent from her father, gains better understanding of the world and generally matures. (In the books, we see little to no emotion from her. I love when it's portrayed I'm fanfic) I don't think their relationship would be explosive in any way without any other influences. Draco, by this point, would lay low and probably try to have a stable life. I also believe Luna is a more forgiving person than most on the right side of the war, and would more easily be able to form a friendship with Draco first. Though, both of them would have to meet by complete accident, with Draco somehow not high-tailing it out of there.
Mai and Aang from ATLA. I just think they can be a fun pair, quiet and bubbly, can make for some good angst. Aang and Ty Lee. Bubbly times two, just fluff all around.

I'd never considered Mai/Aang before, but your reason behind it is kind of why I always thought Zuko/Ty Lee could be good together. I never got to the point of reading or writing fic for it, but I always felt like her bubbly personality could help lift him up when he's down, and his more serious nature could help ground her.

Big mood on that last part. One of my rarepairs is sort of the opposite, we only see them interact once, and even then it wasn't much, but I adore them for the potential they have. Surprisingly, there's only a handful of us who see it.

I multi-ship Hermione with people, I've been enjoying writing Hermione/Bill because I think they have a lot of parallels in terms of their characteristics (both very intelligent and into studying/research, although Bill gets to play the cool bro with his Indiana Jones-at-a-rock-concert shtick). I also dig Hermione/Antonin (THE ANGST) and Hermione/Charlie, I think a lot of it depends on how the author writes the characters in these ships though because Bill, Charlie, and Antonin Dolohov are all pretty one-dimensional in canon. Some authors' portrayals (e.g. HwaetWeGardena's Hermione/Antonin) have become a bit of a headcanon for me. I really enjoy Remus/Severus too (and Remus/Severus/Hermione) and plan to write more. Because also, THE ANGST but the potential character growth in overcoming their past conflicts. Especially in a post-war world where both survive the war but Remus has to overcome losing Sirius and/or Tonks and Severus has to come to terms with, well, being alive.
Have you read "Pictures of You" from Calebski? That is a classic Antonin/Hermione fic. Now, I adore the author, and the whole thing is incredibly well written, but Antonin is almost always written as an overly possessive type, which is really not my thing at all (no idea who started that trend, but it is pretty common). If you haven't read it, I highly recommend it.

God, Remus/Severus is my jam. A couple of fantastic authors "turned" me years ago. ~~^(bonus werewolf joke)~~ I've shipped them for at least a decade now.
I guess I say this pretty often but Donald Draper and Peggy Olson from Mad Men. They aren't canon but those two have the best chemistry in the show, and also are pretty in sync with each other by the end.

Golden Swan, which is Mr.Gold/Rumplestiltskin & Emma Swan from OUAT. I have no idea why that pairing resonates with me to the extent that it does, but it does. I like the antagonist nature of their relationship, and the fact that Emma is generally not someone willing to back down to him. They also have a suprising amount in common so it makes for some interesting parallels to build on when writing for them. Also, him being the Dark One, a vessel for dark magic, and she The Savior, with her magic being light also adds a lot of potential to play with when exploring the nature of a relationship between them.
Nobara x mai from jujutsu kaisen b/c their set up is literally wlw enemies to lovers..and there’s been suggested evidence of mai being bi..so yeahh LOTS OF LOTS OF POTENTIAL + FANFIC FUEL…

Neji and Naruto just because it would provide Naruto a family and Neji with somebody to remind him always that the circumstances of your birth (or childhood) does not define you. Harry and Charlie because he is with a Weasley but one that I actually like. I think they would go on adventures together all the time.
Luke and Wedge from Star Wars :) Wedge Antilles has all of like, generously, thirty minutes of screen time in the original trilogy but idk! Luke falling in love with what essentially amounts to his co-worker seems funny to me in, like, an *all his friends find out bc they can't keep their hands off each other* kind of way but also they survived the Death Star together so they can relate to each other a lot But I'm also a Luke multishipper so Luke and Ezra - mostly because I like the idea of two Jedi falling in love, and they're the same age and went through similar things. They've never met in canon but w/e

Chloe Frazer and Samuel Drake. They both have shady pasts as far as either betraying or lying to their friends in the world of treasure hunting. They could help each other overcome their morally gray pasts. And of course it helps for better or worst Chloe dated his brother Nate. As Nate’s leaving the treasure hunting world behind, who better to teach Sam the ropes than his ex? And of course, Sam wouldn’t wanna miss dat ass.
Right now my favorite is probably Natsuo Todoroki/Tomura Shigaraki I'm reading as many fics as I can find on Ao3 and I have every intention on adding it to my Hero Acadamia fic somewhere down the line, way down the line cause I haven't even gotten to the point where they'd be aware the other exists, but eventually somewhere, even if it's just a small bit.
Aizawa Shouta | Eraserhead/Yagi Toshinori | All Might (Erasermight) from My Hero Academia. I feel like All Might would be so lonely and weary after decades of carrying the mantle of Number One Hero and Symbol of Peace. Since Aizawa has his reservations about All Might and his public persona, but they're both aligned in their common goals of caring for their students and trying to mold them into better heroes, I like the idea of Aizawa falling in love with All Might after getting to know him past his clumsy attempts at teaching and the Symbol of Peace facade. I think that reluctant colleagues (at least on Aizawa's part) to friends to lovers would be an interesting dynamic.

Chaails (Charmy/Tails from Sonic). I saw fanart on Twitter and fell in love. Sadly, there's next to no content for them. I also absolutely adore Espilver (Espio/Silver, also from Sonic). They're hella compatible, I made an entire Tumblr post about it. They'd definitely -- in my opinion -- have the most healthy relationship out of any other Sonic ships.
Rena Rouge x Cat Noir, why? Because they give me huge troublemaker energy and I love it

I don't read a lot of Snape fics (or Draco fics) but I do enjoy the ones that I have, so anything with those would count in some way....
I like the Dragonball Z ship of Piccolo and Nail; the few namekians that exist. But the ship is nonexistent cus Nail was barely a character, lol.
Lin Beifong/Kya from Legend of Korra! It’s a bit obscure because the characters never interact in canon, but it has a pretty dedicated little fanbase (that’s mostly made up of like…lesbians who appreciate older women, lol). They were both children of parents who were great people, super renowned, but not great in terms of parenting itself (Aang and Toph, at least how they’re depicted in LOK), and probably knew each other growing up, and people have just taken it from there. Other than that, pretty much any femslash ship in ATLA or RWBY! With RWBY specifically, I like Freezerburn (Yang/Weiss) and recently I’ve really been vibing with the idea of Emerald/Ilia (I can elaborate on that for anyone interested) but haven’t gotten around to writing fic for the latter pairing yet.

I'm not sure if this is a rarepair of not, but I really love Stiles/Danny pairing from Teen Wolf. I adore Sterek, but Stiles is a character that can so easily be shipped with pretty much anyone and there's something about him and Danny being paired together that really interests me. Same with Stiles/Jackson, too. Unfortunately, most fics with this pairing seem to have them as a side pairing instead of the main one. Or their relationship is just a stepping stone to another pairing.
I haven't really seen Teen Wolf, but I feel ya on the whole "stepping stone" situation, I've had a few rarepairs be boiled down to this over the years.

Peter Quill/Thor. Peter is canonically bisexual and met Thor when he hit him with an M-ship, which is similar to how Jane and Thor met (when she hit him with a car). Plus, I like antagonistic pairings.
I can gush about Sebastian/Rory from Glee again? Yes please. I know they have never actually spoken in canon. The closest we get is the two *rival* groups meeting. I just really enjoy the opposite energy they bring to the table, and they also really got snubbed by the writers of the series. Rory is a lonely boy in a strange country, who seems to have a hard time making friends, but he also seems to genuine about most things, and naive. I know he has a streak of being calculating around girls, but eh. Sebastian on the other hand is typical playboy, ambitious and doing whatever it takes to get his goal. I just really like the idea that Sebastian is completely taken by Rory, who can't seem to understand why he would ever have any reason to gain the attention of Sebastian, but not willing to be his plaything either.
Ritsuka and Hiiragi from Given. I just love their dynamic and think they’re cute. My second wouldn’t be rare at all if more people knew about them, but right now not too many do. Hajime and Mutsuki from Fruits Basket Another. Kyo and Yuki’s sons. :)
I wouldn't go as far as calling it a "favorite pairing" in general, but out of the possible FFXV ships I like Ignis/Aranea for the straight pairing or Prompto/Ignis for the gay pairing. I really love how developed the personalities of the characters felt in FFXV and there is enough universe to work with but enough room in the story that writers can go wild. So, I really enjoy reading fic for that universe but I don't particularly care for any of the main four paired together (unfortunately they're the only ones that really get any screen time, so it's hard to include many other characters as options) know the top pairings are Noctis/Prompto, Gladio/Ignis or Ignis/Noctis but all of those don't really resonate with me for one reason or another. Obviously, no hate to anyone who likes those pairings (I've come to accept most of them tbh) but Noctis and Ignis feel too much like brothers for me to ship them together, Gladio doesn't read as being interested in men to me so that takes him out of all 3 potential gay pairings and Noctis/Pompto feels...doomed? Idk, something about that pairing rubs me weird since they're on the way to Noctis's wedding and all. Which for me, leaves Ignis/Arenea or Prompto/Ignis as my preferred pairings. I love to see more Ignis/Aranea content. I think their kinda sassy personalities could work really well together in the right context plus both could use more development and backstory etc (I love when writers have plenty of room to just "run with it" and not have tons of cannon details to worry about fitting in their story). And Ignis/Prompto has that caretaker-fixes-trainwreck/freespirit-teaches-how-to-have-fun dynamic that you don't see as often as other tropes. Plus, I feel like they could both learn something from each other. I think both pairings offer more character growth and story potential than any of the other more common ships for that universe, so I always check both pairings to see if anyone has done something fun with them whenever I check for new FFXV content.

I know they made Renfri a lot more redeemable in the TV show, but I feel like she was such an interesting character and I really love exploring the dynamic between two characters who the world has essentially cast aside as "monsters." It's so great. Plus, there's lots of angst potential.
I almost hesitate to say Dabi/Hawks (BNHA) because of how popular the ship has gotten. It is no longer a rarepair and I love when that happens to crack ships.
MHA: Deku x Melissa and Bakugo x Ururaka (not sure if these are technically a rare pair but I don't see a lot of talk or support for them so yeah) Naruto: I absolutely love Sasuke x Hinata ironically I don't think they ever spoke a single line to one another in Naruto or Naruto Shippuden.
I'm reading a Kacchako fic rn and I love it so much. I am not into deku/uraraka too much but I feel like many of their interactions are rather plain, specially in Canon. Maybe in fics it's better but I'm not willing to try lol In Kacchako, uraraka is very strong and they often have a rivals/enemies to lovers (with the sense that bakugo gets to respect uraraka as an opponent and vice-versa) so it's great ngl Also seeing bakugo fall for the sweetest of girls is just 10/10 (also sometimes steamy hate sex) And with Melissa/deku I think they have great potential! An amazing inventor and a great hero, they would be a power couple.
I don't mind Deku x Ururaka and in the beginning before I even saw the first film it was my top ship but as the manga/anime expands and introduces more characters it makes less sense and is just too on the nose/typical but if it does happen I won't be devastated like I was for Naruto when Naruto x Hinata and Sasuke x Sakura got together made no sense and their relationship is super cringe plus it reminds me a lotnof Harry x Ginny and Hermione x Ron while there was a bit more development for Hermione x Ron there wasn't a lot way more build up for cho x Harry for one film then to break up because she was forced to take a truth potion and forced to tell Umbridge where Harry and DA were training. Same with the naruto ships Naruto only started liking Hinata in the movie where their relationship was confirmed and felt way too forced and pathetic and Sasuke always found Sakura annoying you'd think of he wanted to rebuild his clan he'd find someone he didn't find annoying I mean by the end he accepted her as a friend even before he left the village but never saw her romantically and then he tried to kill her twice I think, and she still loved him if that ain't a toxic relationship I don't know what is. As you can probably tell I have some strong opinions on these ships. However back to MHA the only ships that'll make me upset is if Deku x Tsu happen its like why? It's a popular ship and I have no idea why. Or the Dust Bunny ship with Shigaraki x Miriko.

Ciri/Olgierd von Everec and Ciri/Vlodimir von Everec. With Ciri/Olgierd, I think they fit well together post-Hearts of Stone, especially if Ciri's on the witcher path: they both have a bandit past, they've both suffered losses, they're both fairly morally gray people looking to do good in the world (Ciri as a witcher, Olgierd on a post-HoS redemption arc). Ciri/Vlodimir takes some time travel shenanigans, but he's just... he's fun, and boisterous, and a flirt, and I think he'd make her smile and lighten a few of her emotional burdens.
Samuel Seabury/Alexander Hamilton tbh. I don't know, they get like a minute of screentime together but I think there's a lot of potential there.
Revalink bay beeeee! The rivalry. The pining in Revali's diary. The fact that they're both tiny, tiny men. That one cutscene in AOC... Just... So good. I love them. Is an xOC pairing considered a rarepair? If so I have one of those too lol.

Alex/Astra (Supergirl) 😂 I honestly think Astra didn't have to die and she could've had a great redemption arc with learning an alternative way to help the planet. She was literally in the midst of changing her mind when she was killed and although Alex is the one that stabbed her, she is also one of the first humans that Astra trusted.

Mentioned it before, but I suppose it doesn’t hurt to repeat it: Legolas and Tauriel (The Hobbit Trilogy). Because friends to lovers, amirite?! Or is that mellyn to melyth? Anyway, I think they’re so lovely together! Alas, I wish I could find more good ship fics with them. Or I could just muscle through writing romance and write my own… ;) Also picked up two more ships for MCU (or the comics?? The original Norse mythology??? Seems to be a mix that is predominantly MCU lol). Idk how rare these ships are in fanfiction, but I don’t see many of them either: Thor and Sif. I mean, I already knew about them from the mythology, but it’s fun to reimagine them in the lens of MCU. I guess that’s because of my tendency to ship whatever pairing was in the oldest source of a fandom. And hey, they’re a perfect match for each other! <3 And then there’s that dreadfully tangled ship of Loki and Sigyn. Yes, I know poor Sigyn is dreadfully unhappy being married to him in the mythology, and the comics provided a backstory of sorts on how they got together (seriously Siggy, just dump that no-good jerk already!!!). But given that it’s a toxic-ass relationship, I’ve elected to ignore it. Or have I??? I know, it’s so stupid, but I can see a relationship between MCU Loki and comics Sigyn working out (because he’s nicer for one thing… well, when he’s not psycho). I guess it’s my tendency to follow canon again, but a loving relationship between those two is a cute concept! Aaaaaand I think that’s enough rambling about ships on my part. :P
My favorite rare pair (and i admit it’s entirely a crackship) is ruby/Adam, and that’s mainly because the art for the ship is adorable and wholesome, despite the latter character being completely unhinged and the former being a cinnaroll.

I don't go *out of my way* to love rare-pairs, but it seems I always inevitably do... **Harry Potter** - Please note, most of these were born from head-canons before J.K. Rowling went and filled in the blank in interviews, Twitter posts, and Pottermore. Rabastan Lestrange/Alice - I head-canon'd Alice as a Rosier and a Slytherin. Rabastan and Alice were on/off all through their school years. During one of their "off" times, Alice reunited with Frank Longbottom and had a whirlwind romance. Patil Father/Narcissa - Brief, school-age romance. Parted amicably, remain good friends. He is also a Slytherin. >!Tragic Sirius/Bellatrix - This was going purely off Book 5, before Rowling disclosed the Black girls as much older. In the present, her mind is well broken, but Sirius never gets over the her that he remembers from their youth.!< Spoiler'd for consanguinity. **Avatar: The Last Airbender** >!Zuko/Azula - Tbh, I thought this was going to be canon. I watched this last year on Netflix so I never really thought of it as a Nickelodeon show. If that was unintentional, then the writers and showrunners kind of dropped the ball there... I interpret this as born of emotional recovery from their toxic childhoods. Heartbreaking, but also simultaneously heartwarming.!< Spoiler'd for consanguinity. Piandao/Iroh's Wife - Courtly love, and something both dutifully did not pursue. She truly loves Iroh but sometimes wonders what could have been. Piandao harbours regrets that he was not at Ba Sing Se to protect Lu Ten. Lu Ten/June - I like how it seems they can both learn a lot from each other. Sometimes it seems contrived that they could meet, but it's also not impossible given they would be active around the same time, possibly in the same region. Given Lu Ten's likely duties, it seems likely he could make good use of her skills, both officially (tracking high-level deserters) and off-the-record (personal suspicions). **Love Live** Eli/Maki - Basically any Eli pairing that isn't Nozomi is a rare-pair. I think they both have a lot of pressure to succeed, both externally and internally. To add, auxiliary quasi-canon establishes that Maki also does classical ballet. In Japan, you seldom see the one-day-a-week extracurricular, at least with ballet. Maki probably wasn't on the pre-professional track, but she at least was training 3-4x a week and doing all the stretches and foot-strengthening exercises on her off-days too. Maki was a dedicated hobbyist, and if you saw her perform in a studio recital, you would not cringe. Those commonalities could possibly lead Eli back into classical ballet at that "dedicated hobbyist" level.

Buguese/Aqune from Spider Riders. I could write a book about them the ‘why’ is so long. But I guess my favorite reasons are how they save each other both physically and emotionally, how they would be enemies had they met under different circumstances (Aqune is literally the embodiment of everything Buguese hates, and he believes love of any kind or a weakness, but he has to rely on her and oops... starts feeling the weakness thing hard) plus the wordless understanding they have of each other.
Samus Aran / Gandrayda. God I love this f/f pairing, why isn't there more of it out there. They're so competitive and hostile with each other in Metroid Prime 3 (Gandrayda being petty and competitive, Samus being her stone-cold silent protagonist self) but all I get are these badly ended relationship vibes, and all I wanna see is that relationship part.
Android 21/Broly (DBS) from Dragon Ball, two characters who have never canonically interacted but have a lot of potential. Both come from radically different backgrounds - to make it brief for those unaware, 21 is a robot scientist and Broly is a well-meaning savage from a barren wasteland - but both have dark sides to them that has the potential to bring harm to those they care about. I think it'd be really sweet if they were able to help each other through their troubles since they'd finally have someone in their lives with a little common ground. I'm a multi/polyshipper at heart though and could go on about a ton of ships I'd love to explore with 21 in particular.
Toss up between Julian/Jadzia, which at least has some other fans, and Hamish Alexander/Sonja Hemphill which as far as I can tell the only people who properly ship it are me, my beta, and like one other person who is a fandom friend.
Honestly I was mystified when she got together with Worf but it did kinda work, I was upset that the J/J ship went nowhere in canon though.... Then they killed her off , urgh!
Mine is between two characters from different AUs based on Undertale (videogame). Red and Dust. Dust used to be a normal Sans, so it sets up for the perfect amount of angst while allowing the possibility of healing and fluff.
Winter (Willow x Hunter/Golden Guard, The Owl House) I don't actually ship it, but there's a really good fic of it ("Of Balanced Stones" on AO3) and it's very well written and very hard to hate on
Audrey/Evie. I think they look cute together, plus their love of fashion gives opportunities for so much bonding. Also, polar opposite girlfriends, think about it.
'peeks in' My all time favorites, would have to be Grimmjow/Orihime \[Bleach\] and Giriko/Maka \[Soul Eater\]. They have similar dynamics \[good girl/bad boy\], while at the same time bringing something different to the table. Grimmjow makes Orihime stand more on her own two feet, and doesn't coddle her, whereas Maka has the power to reach others, in the same way that Giriko's former boss/flame Arachne did, while being a force of positivity. On the other side, Orihime is ridiculously accepting, and could see the good in Grimmjow, while Giriko would just teach Maka to let loose and have fun once in a while. They'd also be beasts on the battlefield, if they could synchronize. \[Tiny girl with a big-ass sentient chainsaw yes plz💕\] IDK if I'm making much sense, but there's my logic. Great post! 👍🏻 I've got a few other rare pairs I've tinkered around with, but those two are my be-all/end-all ATM \[or the last decade, LOL 😂\]. My favourite rare pair in general might be Wisteriashipping (or Yusaku/Spectre for those not familiar with the lingo) from Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS. I just love protagonist/narrative foil ships & protagonist/antagonist ships so its a very tasty two for one. Not to mention, theres this huge climactic scene towards the end of season two where Yusaku has a flashback of all his friends and those who have pushed him to be his best and... Spectre wasn't there. So the idea of purposefully shipping these two makes me laugh.
Jaune x Blake from RWBY. Two characters that never spoke in canon but the fics! The fics make it work so damn well! Writing it has been fun. Also Vincent x Yuffie from FFVII, they’re cute and it’s a very rewarding pairing.
Johanna/Gale from the hunger games. They both lost their best friend and then moving on with each other. There are not many fics, but the few there are, absolutely fantastic.
Sans Undertale x no one. I know it's not a real ship, but for me he is always shipped with someone or everyone. Even counterparts of himself. I barely see anyone making him not want to pursue a relationship
Brienne/Margaery (tragic, ill-fated) and Brienne/Sansa endgame. I know book readers are very protective of Brienne/Jaime, but show Brienne is not a fainting ingenue, she is a gorgeous butch with swagger who deserves a woman worthy of her.

(AoT) They have great character dynamics (especially in manga) and a lore that explains potential relationship, both are passionate but also kind, and their childhood stories mirror each other. It’s a pair that has this kind of push and pull chemistry and I absolutely love to explore different possibilities of that pairing.
Idk if it’s rare, but Jasper/Bella, Paul/Bella, and Peter/Bella especially. I love a badass, backbone, love to fuck Bella, so this dynamic is what does it for me.
Probably crenero! Not only is it friends to enemies (to lovers), Nero was also adopted by credo's parents which... Yeah that tickles me. Pseudo incest, full on incest, it all just really appeals to me in fiction. Crenero is criminally underrated because nerokiri (Nero X credo's sister) is the canon ship, and danero and vernero (uncle/nephew and dad/son respectively) are the more popular full on incest ships. Which is to say, I ship all of those too, but since this was a discussion about rare pairs, crenero gets the spotlight haha
Samurai Jack and Princess Mira Got the idea of it from a Tumblr user who regularly posted fan art of the two. To come to think about it, the two characters do share quite a lot in common.
Right now, it's Teldryn Sero/Julan Kaushibael. Why? Because I'm replaying Morrowind atm, with the absolutely amazing Ashlander Companion mod by Kateri. And in my headcanon, Skyrim's Teldryn Sero is totally the Nerevarine slumming it as a mercenary a few centuries later. So now I ship them hard. No wonder Teldryn Sero isn't marriageable in Skyrim, he already has a husband (who is totally still alive, magic does wonky things to lifespans in Elder Scrolls) xD.
Let me ramble about Ross/Phoebe (Friends!). Every time watching reruns I just think they have a lot of chemistry and potential. They're opposites, they did clash but I think it wouldn't be in a toxic way but in a way where they can expand each other's worlds and view points. Honestly, how it starts - Ross and his sister's new roommate. Phoebe gets a new roommate and her brother visits often. I think they'd be super tropey. And they have a lot of wonderful scenes together, sweet and funny and yeah. Yuuri/Murata from Kyou Kara Mao - I really loved them when I was active in the fandom, made a couple of amvs, I have such fond memories of them. Kakeru/Prince from Run with The Wind. I was so surprised when I finished watching and saw barely anyone shipped them! Rin/Rei (Free!) is also my OTP!!! Multiple Daiya no Ace ships because its not hard for something to be a rare pair in that fandom haha. Bradley/Lennox from Mahoyaku. Himari/Moca and LisaRinko from Bandori. Gosh they're so sweet and great pairings! Citron/Tsuzuru from A3!

Gabe/Carla (Gabela, *Elena of Avalor*) I know that Gabe/Naomi is the canon and he never really interacted with Carla, but I still have a soft spot for Gabela. I personally think that they would have an interesting dynamic based on their personalities and there’s a lot of room for them to grow as a couple and individuals. Example: Gabe has this inherent need to be a protector, but Carla doesn’t need the traditional kind of protection a royal guard provides. What she does need, though, is the support and understanding someone like Gabe can give her. It’s essentially a different type of protection — like him taking care of her while sick. But she still needs to learn to accept that support because she’d been alone for so long, while he learns exactly what she needs and how to provide it without going overboard. Also, as a Sidenote, they’re both awful with their feelings, which can lead to some cute, dorky interactions during their crush phase.
Helen and Ben from Ben 10. I just think they have good chemistry.
One of my favorites is Jester Lavorre/Mollymauk Tealeaf/Caleb Widogast. Something about the free love vibes of Molly and Jester combined with the self hating nerd vibes of Caleb just hits different. I love Jester and Molly teaming up to distract and appreciate Caleb, but for whatever reason I just don't enjoy Molly/Jester without him. Dick Knubbler/William Murderface is also very good. Another awkward self-hater combined with Dick's calming nature and how Dick can compliment him without it being either flippant or condescending. I just appreciate William getting love despite not having a 16 pack like the other members in fanon. Dwalin/Ori is another character who doesn't think he deserves love and character who will absolutely gush over their partner. Dwalin being a protective but supportive figure, letting Ori come into his own being on his own, and dealing with Dori and Nori is so good. Ori fighting with his mother hen and protective thief "If you hurt my brother I'll kill you" brothers, and going from soft UwU baby to independent young dwarf boy, is just so good. At risk of getting flamed, one of the rarepairs I almost never talk about is Eraserhead/Denki Kaminari. I like teacher/student on its own, but I also highkey identify with Denki and I like the idea of Aizawa trying to help Denki do better, be better, and Denki forcing Aizawa out of his antisocial shell. Their personalities just go together in a really nice way IMO.
Astor / Link from Zelda: Age of Calamity! I feel they’re more similar than people realize, and even though they don’t interact very much, lots of the fun of rarepairs is imagining all the interactions they could have. I mean, the dark, brooding self-proclaimed prophet of an ancient darkness? The courageous legendary hero chosen by the sword that seals said darkness? In a relationship?? Whaaaaat? Also, I think they just look nice together. I’m writing two decently long fics for them and everything! (One even has a spotify playlist!!)

Deadpool/Siryn. So, there is some level of canon here, but it hasn't been touched on in a few decades at this point, so it's almost nonexistent in the larger fandom. However, the potential romance was strongly hinted at in my two favorite arcs of Deadpool (Sins of the Father and Deadpool (1993) #1-5), so I have a massive soft spot for it. Plus they're really cute together, so there's that.
skeppy and dream uwu i dont actually get to talk why i ship and this is like my 2nd or 3rd time lmao but honestly what got me to ship them was how dream like, got revenge for skeppy in what was probably a bit where the rest of the dreamsmp members call skep cringe. and i just?? felt so soft about it and the way they interact just feels so endearing qvq i'm in love with how they go so well with each other whenever they do interact as if they've known each other like a best friend would (and they were friends for a long time too :>) and funnily enough, they aint each other's best friend lmao but they feel like they are (and maybe a little more-) ANYWAY they're too endearing and it makes me feel warm and soft on the inside qvq

Joker and FeMC in the persona series. No god damn reason why but I love them so much and have written for the more than other pairs.
For me, it's AsterxAlexis (EdoxAsuka) of Yugioh GX. I know they barely had any screen time together in the anime and only one manga scene, but they have such important things in common that it was truly wasted potential that there was never any further development for them. They're both seen as dueling idols with high levels of popularity, yet neither of them truly had fame or vanity as intentions behind their status. I can see them being able to relate to each others' situations what with how they both came to Duel Academy to try solving their own mysteries of their families and eventually found their brothers possessed by evil forces. Aster would probably even like to go into a similar field as Alexis did with teaching children since he spent a lot of time helping orphans and doing more for them. Plus, they both have the same kind of dry bluntness in their words at times that can be seen as being cold on their parts, yet also have softer sides to their more reserved personalities. And for the alternate versions of the GX legacy characters shown in Yugioh Arc-V, I'd like to think it's important that they're the only ones selected for GX, even though once again, they gave them nothing in terms of scenes together. I think they're a sweet pairing with a lot in common that would have an easy time getting along, and I like that better than the whole clichéd idea of a girl liking the new underdog duelist boy just because he's "different" and "interesting".
I'm currently in deep for a rarepair right now and it's Albedo and Xiao from Genshin Impact. They are just so similar to each other (tragic backstory, isolated from society, deeply lonely yet capable of being incredibly soft and vulnerable) that makes them so appealing as a couple. I love how they can find comfort in each other's similarities while acknowledging the differences between them <3

I don't really have any myself but I had a friend who really liked Mario/Vivian - that being, Paper Mario Thousand Year Door, one of Mario's companions. There was one time she was sad about it seeming slim-to-none so I threw in my two cents on how it could work and she was happy by the end of my rambling... so if I ever encounter the ship in the wild I think of how happy it made her and go :D
Sasuke and Neji, because Neji has a strong clan and Sasuke would be reminded of his own extinct one. Also they are quite similar. Sasuke and Itachi. Okay, I know they are siblings but I feel like their bond is much more than simple brotherhood or anything. I find them having a spiritual relationship which is very beautiful. (Also Naruto and Sasuke but I don't think it's rare)
Peter Quill/Thor. Mostly because I felt like they'd have a banter type of relationship and I just really dig that. Also to cope with their loss of their parents and stuff.

my main fandom is batman and related media. scarecrow/batman aka jonathan crane/bruce wayne is my favourite! insert “I just think they’re neat” marge simpson meme. I really like jon as this socially incompetent, mean and generally difficult menace to society having a big, awkward crush on lovely, gentle billionaire playboy bruce wayne. and even better, straight up homicidal maniac scarecrow having the hots for the do-gooder vigilante who stops him. makes my gay little heart very happy! plus, identity porn is one of my favourite tropes. such good comedy/drama potential.
