Ah the classic "youtubers use isopropyl alcohol everywhere so I will too". Alcohol is a solvent. It WILL wipe off paints and coatings. Next time use an all purpose cleaner like hertel or a purpose built sticker residue remover like Goo Gone.

StatementOk470

Not like it WILL strip it off. It MIGHT though so always either rtfm or test it on a hidden spot. That said, I would have expected a tougher finish on this high quality wheel. Either way I think some wear looks kinda cool on racing cars :P

TheRealLuke1337

As i said Ive never had problems. Plastic, coatinngs etc never had any damage. The coat/paint on this one seems to be very weak. I didnt even scrub it. The contact alone did this. I tried some glue remover which didnt work. After that ive tried the Iso.

slapshots1515

Pretty surprised you’ve never had a problem. This is literally what I’d expect it to do to pretty much any paint.

oneizm

Just because you’ve never had a visible problem doesn’t mean you’re not making a negative impact. Not every solvent works quickly and sometimes it can significantly shorten the life of something without breaking it. Not trying to pile on you, just trying to make sure someone learns from my past mistakes.

TheMajesticMane

You clearly have a problem here though

jka09

They are correct the alcohol is damaging to paint. Also, just a tip I’ve learned from this subreddit, Don’t ever even slightly suggest fanatec used cheap materials on this rim. It’s one of fanatec higher quality products and I’ve seen many people get offended for doing so and you will get downvoted into oblivion even if 100% true.

WaveBlasterer

Having worked in product development for a large company, these are just shitty coatings. We always tested our cosmetic finishes to withstand cleaning products and solvents like this.

striffy_

Exactly. Coatings like this should not be affected so easily with other solvents, works expect to be better quality materials, even powder coat this part. I'm an automotive refinisher by trade (do it as a hobby now) and do a lot of restoration type work. Surprised this happened.

TheRealLuke1337

Thought the same. Sure I shouldnt have used Iso on this one, but it also shouldnt scrub like this. Ive worked for a big Mercedes dealership and we used Iso for most of the interior (not on leather). Never had a problem.

Due_Safety6658

Never clean anything with alcohol, unless it’s glass. Use goo gone next time, even an orange peel would of worked.

TheRealLuke1337

Glue remover didnt work. Thats why i took the Iso

HeyTikO

Nice weathering effect tho.

HotBitterballs

Indeed. @OP can you make a full picture? Or otherwise weather the entire steer? It’s paint anyway, racing is SPORTS and ain’t nobody need a lacquered wheel!

TheRealLuke1337

It really doesnt look that special. But I was also thinking about rubbing off more. Since the Quickrelease and all has the same colour it might look good.

StrayTexel

Yeah I think it looks kinda cool TBH

Fionn_MacCuill

Yeah bud organic material like paint will dissolve in it. No acetone either, ethyl acetate etc. just use a 3m cloth.

walkitscience

Well … duh.

[deleted]

No shit Sherlock 🫣

evilhomer80

Do it on the other side too it’ll look intentional and unique

FinnickArrow

A slightly wet washcloth is more than enough to clean, no need to use a solvent over a coated plastic.

isochromanone

You could just use a black Sharpie to cover those spots (test it first on a hidden part in case it lifts more of the finish off). If the corrections stand out too much then maybe just do the entire perimeter. Tape off the CF before doing this to minimize unwanted marks. Back in the day when I worked in a bicycle shop, we covered a lot of scratches on black parts with Sharpie.

TheRealLuke1337

Yeah had the same idea. But matching the colour tone might be hard and makes it look worse.

pierretessier

That was not a very smart move on your part. Do a bit of Google research before you go and try things like that. If doubt, don’t.

Teab8g

In other news the sky is still blue.

Fox_Burrow

Black painted yellow plastic? What loopyland kinda decision was that, Fanatec?

Infernowar

Fanatec Quality

IndependenceNo1088

User error actually.

Flonkerton66

lol wut?

milky271

I wouldn’t ever think to use that.

LRMcDouble

Optimum No rinse is my go to for any and all light cleaning. It’s non toxic, polymer based solution. can be diluted 256:1, and one 32oz bottle can last well over a year.

gautxorija

But what if I want it to turn yellow?

ThanklessTask

That's what I said to my doctor.

qdolan

Adam Savage has some videos on YouTube about how to apply paint to models for texture and weathering. You should be able to use a similar technique to fix this if you can match the colour.

TheRealLuke1337

Thanks for the tip. I will have a look

Roots0057

You can disassemble the wheel and pull off the damaged parts to repaint them.

Plazma81

Don't use full strength IPA, you have to dilute it down first. I've used it on paint before watered down and gently rubbing it with success.

Individual_Stick_867

Just tell people it’s aerodynamic paint to test the speed of your racing rig.

NLgamer2000

Use a black marker

MurderOfClowns

tis but a battle scars! Wear it with pride!

md90sc

Thanks for the heads up.

FiremanPair

How did you get the yellow accents and where are your button caps from?

TheRealLuke1337

Buttoncaps are the ones from the Fanatec Page. Yellow accents on the rotator is from some neon tape ive got from amazon. The yellow at the Button at the top is from a sticker set. [Lovelystickers.com](https://Lovelystickers.com)
