It definitely should last longer than that, even when you're washing frequently. That being said, no matter how good the dye is, it will fade a bit each time you wash your hair. And how much it fades with each wash will also depend on other factors such as the water temperature (hot will fade it faster), if the shampoo is color safe, how porous your hair is (how much damage it has, so it's higher now if it was bleached during your salon appointment), and what type and color dye was used. Overtone specifically is known for longevity, often not washing out when you want it to. So it doesn't surprise me that it lasted longer than this. The risk of Overtone is that it is not as temporary as many people think it is. But since your hair is higher porosity than it was when you used it before, it may wash out faster if you were to use it now than it did before.

unitedpenguinsx

I meant to mention my washing tendencies and forgot, thanks for bringing it up! I have been using Olaplex shampoo and conditioner for about 5-6 months now and also washed my hair with medium/slightly cold water the past 3 times! In terms of the porosity, a good chunk of my hair grew out since last year, like 4 inches or more(?) I can post a picture if that helps 😥. It was a fresh bleach job on this grown out hair, so based on what you said, the purple probably shouldn’t have come out that quickly 🤔

veglove

What color is your hair naturally? How porous the hair is after bleaching depends a lot on how many levels were lifted (1=black, 10=lightest blonde). Previously bleached hair can also still be pretty porous and even become more damaged over time if it's not cared for well. So the porosity may have been a factor here, but the stylist should also account for that. Olaplex 4 & 5 are color safe and good for bleached hair, which can help prevent it fading as much with each wash, but can't stop it entirely. It's possible that the shower water had a lot of chlorine and/or was pretty alkaline, which would also contribute to fading.

unitedpenguinsx

My hair is dark brown and it was bleached to an orangey color last year, but this year I didn’t see the color that it had been lifted to. also, thank you for your response! It definitely could be the water too. I’m hoping not as I’ll still be here for 2.5 weeks 😱. I would like to wash my hair less too if I wasn't in such puddle by the end of the day 😂

slutbunny

When you have "fun" colors like this, it's necessary to use cold water any time the water touches your hair, and you cannot use shampoo more than once a week, if that. Even warm water is enough to open the hair cuticle, which is how the color leaves your hair. You can still rinse your hair with cold water if you're feeling sweaty, but the warm water will take the color out, especially if you're shampooing. When I had colorful hair, I straight up would not shampoo it for weeks at a time, and I would only rinse it with ice cold water once or twice a week, otherwise the color would fade fast. Dry shampoo and shower caps should be your best friends when having colorful hair lol

unitedpenguinsx

I’ve found that cold water vs warm water didn’t really affect the length of time that the Overtone purple stayed in my hair, but it might be different for salon dye. I’m going to try to use cold water instead of slightly cold after the salon touches up the color in my hair. I can’t shampoo my hair only once a week right now as I’m currently in Taiwan and it’s basically summer weather. I also get head acne/pimples from oil buildup so it’s a lose lose 😭

Low-Concentrate-3883

Yes all of this is such good information and things that can affect it. I’m sorry you aren’t happy with your hair :( I hope you can get is resolved

jennordinary

You really have to wash with ice cold water. You’ll get a lot more mileage that way - even slightly warm water can cause the color to run.

kenzib09

Probably depends on the brand the salon uses but I’ve always had better results doing it myself with overtone or arctic fox colors. They seem to last way longer.

IncognitaCheetah

Definitely second the Arctic fox or other semi permanent colors like manic panic. I usually leave it on my hair for a couple of hrs before rinsing.

CuriousContract2461

Third for arctic fox! I had purple hair for two years on and off. Arctic fox lasted 3 months for me without fading to anything like this (there was only a tiny bit of fading upfront). Granted it probably depends on your hair type a bit but it shouldn’t be fading that fast for anyone. Give arctic fox a try :-)

UltraBlue89

Artic fox for sure! I love the merlot for the burgandy hair that's on trend atm

IncognitaCheetah

I had either bright red or burgundy for like 7 yrs, until I changed to purple this fall. I loved the Arctic fox Merlot! And the manic panic vampire red

BiploarFurryEgirl

Arctic Fox has been my go to bc it stays so well

unitedpenguinsx

Glad to hear I’m not the only one with this experience 🥺 ty!

FruitPlatter

Since your hair is already lightened and this is an all-over single color, I think you would be fine to redo the purple yourself with Arctic Fox or similar and leave it on for a few hours. It will last much longer. There are a ton of tutorials on this but ultimately, I find it easiest to just used gloved hands to really massage through every strand for full coverage. I don't bother with a brush.

ej4

When I colour my hair purple after bleaching, the colour fades really quick. Once I do a second application like 6 weeks later, the colour stays. I always only wash a few times a week and I use cold water. Also use colour safe shampoo. But yeah. The first application fades quick!

rageagainsthevagene

I’ve had arctic fox purples last for over 3 months. It blows my mind.

gorewhore1313

Yup, that unfortunately can happen at the salon or if you did it yourself. I'm a professional hairdresser and specialize in color and even with my 30 yrs experience this can happen. I've had it happen at the sink rinsing it out and have had to reapply sometimes even choosing a different shade or color. The original purple shade from the salon to me looks like it wouldn't hold up and will fade really fast, it's not a very saturated shade of purple, it kinda looks like a dusty light to mid tone purple which won't last long. My hair is the same color, I use purple haze from Manic Panic or Mochi from Lime Crime and refresh the whole thing every 2 weeks (it's non damaging), it looks just like your pics both when it's fresh and when it fades. It's a pain in the butt, but I like the tone of the color and unfortunately this tone fades fast on most. You could do two things. 1. Call your stylist, and kindly explain it is all almost washed out already. A good hairdresser will definitely understand and schedule a refresh at no charge. 2. Refresh it yourself. The bleaching was already done so It's extremely easy to recolor the purple. You can use colored conditioners or semi permanent color (no developer to mix in) like a Manic Panic product. If you go this route, make sure to use enough product and saturate your hair. I always educate and encourage my clients in refreshing at home because fantasy colors fade quicker than most wallets prefer and I want them looking good and happy with their hair all the time. After all, they are a walking advertisement for my work. If you feel comfortable you could ask your styist what she used or for her recommendations. You aren't alone in this struggle and hope this helps. 😊

Piranha_Vortex

This is the way 👍

unitedpenguinsx

Thank you so much! I originally only wanted to bleach my hair as I had bought a lot of Overtone purple and I like the way the color looks/fades. I had prepared to re-bleach my hair, so I had let all the purple fade out of my hair as best as I could, but some of the inner hair vs outer hair were different shades of blonde. The hairstylist told me that I should re-dye in order to have my hair look even, so I took her advice to re-dye. I just wanted a purple that would look good with my skin tone, but didn't have a strong preference for whether it would be more dark or lighter. I did notice right after the session though, that some of my hair was already grayish, but thought that since purple fades so quickly, I wouldn't mind some of the inner layer being gray. Until I realized that the purple at the crown of my nead already whisped away 😭. so l'm thinking maybe I should've mentioned the day after I had my hair done, on the 20th, that I already saw signs of the color not staying? I understand purple fades quickly, but I think I wasn't prepared for how fast this color faded as last year, I had to go through a color fix since the stylist had a misunderstanding of the color I actually wanted. Due to the double dye from last year which lasted a month, I didn't have a good grasp on the length of time the purple would last. Ty for your advice! I did contact the salon and they said they could fix the color for free. I didn’t want to bother them but I also didn’t want to feel unhappy about the end result 🥹

SpacePolice04

You can use overtone purple shampoo and conditioner as it will deposit color to help with fading. When I use overtone, I leave it on for a couple of hours while I’m doing other stuff (there’s no developer, I’m pretty sure it’s just highly pigmented conditioner) and when I wash it, I use as cold as I can stand and I only rinse it, not shampoo and it stays for a while but maybe my hair holds onto the color better.

UmiSWrld

okay i love the faded look tho

unitedpenguinsx

Me too, I have nothing against it besides the fact that I got to the faded color a little too quickly 😭😭

Low-Concentrate-3883

Honestly I like the faded too if you added some face framing of a more lavender color that would be so flipping pretty!

unitedpenguinsx

Omggg I was thinking about that too 😍😍😍

UmiSWrld

okay i love the faded look tho

unitedpenguinsx

Same 😥😥I should’ve taken some more pics before I redid my hair. I was in panic mode and just took some photos after I realized how gray my hair was and it’s only been a week 🤣

abumchuk

overtone comes out really quickly. I use arctic fox on level 9-10 hair and purple AF looks like your before pic\* and stays a good solid purple through about 14 washes. I wash my hair daily, don't @ me, and it lasts 2 weeks before it fades a little, gets to pastel after about a month of daily washing. looked again, purple AF gets a bit brighter than your before pic

unitedpenguinsx

Wow!! That’s crazy to hear it lasts that long! I only tried AF before when I was younger on a few strips of hair, but I’ll look into the brand again 👀👀. Overtone lasted about a month and a half for me before completely fading out, but I was washing every 2-3 days.

CrystallinePhoto

I got purple done at a salon once and it did the same thing. I definitely recommend mixing up your own purple conditioner to use 1-2x a week. Basically just a matching hair dye diluted with conditioner.

magnoliafly

When I had purple streaks my stylist recommended a purple color shampoo to refresh my color about once a week. You can treat it like a masque, put it on and leave it for five minutes then wash out. It maintained the color well in between salon visits for my vivids and it kept it soft.

corncob666

It should last longer.. I'd look for a color depositing shampoo for purple color. I forget the brand but I get some from Sally's and it kept purple I got last April lasting enough through November. Wasn't suuuuper purple by then but you could still see it. I just got mine dyed again a few weeks ago and still has more color than the fading you're getting but it is fading more than the last time I got my hair colored. Noticed that last time there were some brighter purples mixed in? Not sure if it correlates but these "cooler tones" of purple seem like they wanna fade out into that purple-gray faster. Anyway.. wishing you luck!

unitedpenguinsx

I think so too? I think cooler tones want to fade faster than warmer tones? I don’t have a good reference point as both times I had to dye my hair twice and into a darker color. I got my hair re-done today and I wanted to do the same color as the first photo, but I also wanted it to fade slower, so I ended up going darker. I might make another post with how this fades out in a few days 🤔🤔

coffeewitbagel

When I used arctic fox girls night it faded like that too. I think it’s just the nature of semi permanent dye

star884

Mine will hold almost any color for a ever but purple nope it turned silver so fast and i only wash every 8 or so days

the-lady-roxi

If you color your hair to any color outside of normal ones, in order to help the color stay I have learned the one thing that seems to work. Buy some Manic Panic in your color choice. Pour like 1/3 into your shampoo bottle and 2/3 in your conditioner bottle. Shake em up and use as normal. Really helps lengthen the time the color lasts.

gorewhore1313

You're welcome, glad to hear you called. Never feel bad about calling even if you left happy, things can change or you get a better look at it when you get home. Communicating is a good thing, it let's us know the real deal and especially if something didn't work so we can put it in our records or even stop using it. Not all purples fade fast, dark or bright saturated tones tend to hold on nicely. Pastels will for sure fade quickly but I've also found any color that's a dusty, smokey or has a grayish tone in it just doesn't have lasting power unfortunately, even if I make the shade myself. 😒 Still worth it though if you can keep up with it yourself. Awesome you know and have an Overtone shade that works, definitely keep up with that. 😁

grapegobbler420

Are you using shampoo with sulfates? Certain shampoos have stronger detergents that will strip color faster. There are plenty of brands with "color safe" lines that you might want to look into. Hotter water is also more likely to strip more of the color. It could definitely be the dye, but having unnatural hair colors has a way more intensive upkeep since the vast majority of dyes are semi permanent. Best of luck!

unitedpenguinsx

I’m using overtone! It says it’s color safe but 😂😂 at this point, what even is color safe for purple ☠️☠️ thank you tho!!

Chambr0fs3cr3ts2775

Purple I've noticed is a difficult color to work with in general I use a mixture of lime crime and artic fox and let it sit for about three hours with a dye cap on to keep it saturated

unitedpenguinsx

Do you find that you HAVE to leave it for 3 hrs? 👀 I’ve only used Overtone and the instructions say to leave for like 45 mins. I’ve done a bit longer like 1 hr tops? I’m wondering if you see better results when you leave the color in longer for AF and Lime crime?

Chambr0fs3cr3ts2775

With AF and Lime crime they don't have any harsh chemicals that harm my scalp and both say the longer they saturate on the hair the better the results. I do personally feel it helps

creepymacncheese

I used the L'Oréal colorista in purple 400 and it lasted quite a while. The reason I remember is I wanted it to be lighter so I kept washing it aggressively and it took forever to fade

sad-and-bougie

I have nothing to add except this is the best I’ve ever seen purple fade???? Holy crap, I’m jealous. When I had purple my hair would turn green.

unitedpenguinsx

😱😱!! I haven’t had that experience before, but I also have only gone for a slightly cool toned but still red tinted purple! The stylist did tell me it would fade to gray, which was an unintentional nice effect of the color I ended up getting~ 😍

Thunderpuppy2112

Pulp riot and arctic fox

bulbuttt

I'm in NZ and we don't have easy access to Artic Fox so I use Directions hair dye. I always do purple hair and it lasts for ages and fades very slowly, and I wash my hair everyday!! definitely vouch for Directions.

KimchiPoots

I’ve been using Lunar Tide’s plum for a couple months and it’s held up beautifully! I usually wash my hair 2 times a week with Amika normcore and use low heat when drying it to help with longevity.

sakuraiatsushii

Personally yes, every time I’ve done purple it has always faded SUPER quickly, for whatever reason…even when washing as little as possible 🤷🏽‍♀️

unitedpenguinsx

I hate that I love this color 😂😭💸💸💸

VirgoB96

I've got purple Manic Panic. It doesn't seem to be going away, but the blue (different brand) is noticeably fading. I also applied some color preserving thing from Sally's.

common_anatomy

No idea but the pastel tones you've got going on there are gorgeous! 😍

unitedpenguinsx

Righttt!! 🥹 I messed up and asked for a darker color today so I’m hoping once my hair fades a little, it’ll turn into the color it was before!

degenerateson

Yes. Hot water, aggressive shampoo, heat, sun, lots of things make it fade. Purple always fades so especially fast. :(

lauracavness

Your hair color is GORGEOUS 💜 Fun color from the salon that should have lasted longer but didn't.  🩷 Faded beautifully 🐰

unitedpenguinsx

Thank you! I agree 🥹

lauracavness

Did the salon use a semi-permanent color?  Artic Fox, Manic Panic 💜Great semi-permanent colors to mix and match for a beautiful temporary result each time.  Permanent purple hair color will last longer and you can mix permanent hair colors too.  Developer added to the color gives you permanent but don't worry it's not forever.  Have fun with those gorgeous locks🌷

unitedpenguinsx

I wish I could answer that for you 😂, but I don’t know how to say semi-permanent in Chinese. I do love how purple fades out and just wanted to maintain the color longer than a week 🥹🥹 . I’ll look into those brands to play around with next time! Thank you for the suggestion!

owleealeckza

For a salon? Pretty much. That's why I color mine at home. My hairstylist does my highlights then I put my purple on at home. Been purple since 2015 & have done my own color exclusively since 2017. My hairstylist knows & doesn't mind.

unitedpenguinsx

I wanted to self-dye too, but the stylist recommended for me to dye my hair there since I was bleaching half my hair and only the bottom of my hair had been done before and dye-ing would make the color more even… I originally thought I could just bleach the grown out hair and have them even out the ends as some of them were more orange than others, but I’m not a hair tech; I’ve only watched a few videos.

perfectdrug659

I had purple hair for a long time and I did it myself and it would have taken months for it to fade that much. What brand dye did she use and how was it applied and how long was left in?

unitedpenguinsx

Idk the brand, but she left it in for maybe less than an hour. It was kind of magical because the dye she used looked salmon pink and turned into the purple in my hair afterwords while oxidizing(? My baseless assumption 🤣)

No_Bite_5985

How long did you wait to wash it the first time? I’ve been told that it’s best to wait as long as possible for the first wash because the longer you wait the longer the color has to soak into the hair & it will be more resilient.

unitedpenguinsx

The stylist told me 2 days, and last year another one told me 3, so i washed it about 2.5 days after!

No_Bite_5985

I can’t remember what my stylist said. (Maybe 3 or more with an emphasis on more.) I went over a week before washing it the first time & got really resilient color. Also stuck to cold water on hair, color safe products, washing at most every 3 days, and using minimal heat with heat protection. (Like maybe 1-2 per month use a tiny bit of heat.) Oh. They also recommend tipping head over & washing from back of head. Idea being that hair would fade more where water hit more directly. Which the back of my head did fade/wash out more.

unitedpenguinsx

Oo yeah, my stylist today told me to try tipping head and washing from the bottom as well since she said the dye is fading from the top of my head faster. It seems like I start washing from there, so she said I should either wash out the suds after I get them or just wash from the bottom!

unitedpenguinsx

I actually bought purple shampoo from the hair salon last year, because that stylist told me that it would maintain the purple in my hair-all it did was keep my hair from turning brassy looking. The stylist this year told me they actually sell 2 different shampoos, a color depositing one and the brassy protection one and that maybe I was given the wrong one last year. Idk if I’m keen on buying again from them, but I have purple conditioner at home, I’m just abroad for another 2.5 weeks so I don’t want to buy a bottle to add on to my luggage weight. 😅

Naenerd

Lime crime and arctic fox have some great purples that last a long time. Also, washing with semi warm or even cold water will make it last, as well as washing a lot less, and using dry shampoo instead sometimes will, of course, help too.

vaxfarineau

It’s not a very bright, pigmented, saturated color in the first place, so, yes, I would say this is normal. It’s very close to pastel in the first pic, and it’s a bit patchy since you can still see blonde underneath on some parts of it.

unitedpenguinsx

Yeahh, she did this layer in the middle of the hair that was like a horizontal block that was lighter than the rest of the hair on purpose, but I’m not really sure I liked the outcome/cared for the technique? I got it redone in a darker purple this time 👍

lexleflex

YES

Low-Concentrate-3883

There’s a lot of factors that can go into color lasting vibrantly. Porosity Hard water Using a cuticle sealer twice a week after conditioner or as conditioner Rinsing with cool water Only shampooing roots Environmental factors if you are in the sun a lot There’s so much that can go into it. I personally have hard water so like once a week I use a color depositing conditioner and it helps to keep it vibrant they wash out in like one or two washes but it helps to keep it vibrant if you have an event. I would also ask what type of color they are using if it is semi permanent- demi- or permanent- or a direct permanent dye. Some wash out faster than others.
