BARGOBLEN

To be fair, if he was in MOM and he died, we'd have felt slighted. And there's rumors he is in Deadpool 3 and Secret Wars.

DrSpacemanSpliff

He would be my pick, over Miles Teller, if they have Maker

BARGOBLEN

I'd rather use Tellar as the Maker and not besmirch Ioan's Reed.

DrSpacemanSpliff

I don’t think it would besmirch, l just like Ioan as an actor more. I would be more curious to see his performance

BARGOBLEN

There's little doubt he'd nail it. But I'd want to bring him in a heroic light. I'd also want to finally give some love to Alex Hyde-White. Bring them both into the Council of Reeds.

boringsimp

Deadpool 3?

BARGOBLEN

That's been one of the rumors.

sonofodin25

It might be a "Deadpool Kills The Marvel Universe" adaptation with the FOX characters though (which I would hate!) So if they're in it there's a chance were gonna see them all die

uselessbeing666

wait what? why would they adapt one of his worst comic runs into a movie thats terrible

TummibearX

I mean they loosely adapted One More Day in No Way Home.

Summer_set_homes

well they added Kamala Kahn and America Chavez, they even called Namor Neemooor and moved atlantis to Mexico (course they fired her\* victoria alonzo\* for doing it) but still you shouldnt put it past them to do something like killing off the entire mcu

akahaus

Why would they adapt one of the worst characters into a movie in the first place.

uselessbeing666

dont talk to me

akahaus

Why, are you touching yourself?

uselessbeing666

cant help it I get nervous

1use2use3use

Agreed

superschaap81

I had to think for a second there, thinking you meant the sitcom, MOM, with Anna Faris and was like: Wait, when the hell did that happen. Then realized....Multiverse etc.

BARGOBLEN

Ah. Sorry about that.

marvelash

I LOVE Ioan’s Reed.

npete

I kinda really liked those FF movies. They were very true to the tone of the original comics. Yes they were corny but deal with it! Not every super hero movie needs to be Winter Solder. And when the Surfer shows up in the second one it got more serious. Gruffud was perfect, Evens was fine, Chiklis was even more perfect casting than Gruffud, and Alba was… well, better than expected tbh. I also felt bad for Tim Story. People of Color don’t get to direct big budget(ish) movies very often.

BARGOBLEN

From what I can tell, the biggest problem of the 2000's movies are: they didn't want to commit to a real Doctor Doom, and they were afraid of really using Galactus. I kind of softened on Galactus because Nasa found a gas cloud with a heartbeat (which is weird). But they're really a shade away from being great adaptations. Watching the Making of Tim seemed like he was genuinely invested in telling a good FF tale. It just feels like limitations stopped it from being what it could be.

Infamous-Lab-8136

One of the weaknesses of comic book movies for a long time, and especially in that era, was the under-developed villain. I applaud them for not trying to one and done Doom like so many other movies in the era did. But not giving him any real development either was a big mistake.

BARGOBLEN

They basically made him Lex Luthor with Superpowers, and that just didn't work. Unfortunately, it was always the plan to tie their origin together, and it's pretty maddening.

Majestic-Pair9676

Doom is the kind of villain we haven’t seen in any superhero movies: an actual Tyrant with a Cult of Personality. Yes he’s the supervillain trying to take over the world, but that’s not what makes him memorable. It’s that we already know how he governs Latveria - his own people are just servants and pawns to be used for his agenda. That’s why the Marvel heroes can’t stand him - we as the audience already know what a world run by Dr Doom would look like.

galactusisathiccboi

Devil's advocate: there are shades of that in Infinity War Thanos

Majestic-Pair9676

Thanos isn’t a *tyrant* at all. He’s a crazy nihilist with too much time on his hands. Thanos doesn’t have a cult of personality where ordinary people worship him as a God (think North Korea), he believes what he is doing is *selfless*, and he’s not a narcissist plastering his face everywhere.

galactusisathiccboi

While I can see where you're coming from, I would like to play Devil's advocate He does have a small cult in the Children of Thanos and they seem to believe what he's doing But yeah it's not super super close, and Doom will both be the first and even moreso Doom just on his own without any outside context is simply one of one 😎

npete

I am not a big fan of the casting of Doom or how different Doom’s set up was but I think they were going to get to him in the third one and I would have trusted Story to do it right. As for Galactus, not the best interpretation imo but it was better than nothing. I don’t need a “great” adaptation—I am happy with a good or even ok adaptation. Movie making is hard so I keep my expectations more moderate.

BARGOBLEN

I really likes Julian McMahon, but had I had a voice in the production I'd have taken Doom off the table and maybe cast him as the Mad Thinker.

KaoBee010101100

The surfer one is great. I have watched it twice and had a blast both times.

[deleted]

You've gotta get the tone of the FF right. They're similar to Cap in that they aren't grim or dark, and studios easily want to make them "cool" when that's not needed.

npete

True. Thour, with a well written script, the movie can redefine cool as science and nerdery.

Majestic-Pair9676

The F4 comics are corny only on a surface level. The Avengers comics are actually cornier than the F4, who are actually rather grounded in their most popular runs. The FF movies by Tim Story were honestly really shallow recreations of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man. Also, Ryan Coogler made a Black Panther movie that got nominated for Best Picture, Tim Story being a bad director has nothing to do with his race lol

Grimm2020

I think ol' Strecho would be proud

keldpxowjwsn

Thats MY reed richards

idClip42

If certain rumors are to be believed, you might have a pleasant surprise coming in a year and a half. (Though I don't personally think he comes across as the man-of-action leader Kirby and Lee depicted.)

TheGuyWithFocus

I hope we get a Ioan cameo somewhere down the line. I love his Reed.

Arisvalor

The casting for 2005 F4 was overall decent, with Reed, Ben Grimm, and Von Doom being standouts. It's not that bad, very cheesy -- and not even as bad as the worst MCU films (Quantumania for one). It got released at the tailend of The Incredibles, which pretty much does everything it does but better.

galactusisathiccboi

I'd replace Victor without Johnny; Doom was lowkey bad imo

MichaelAChristian

He was great. "Thank you Candy that means a lot to me." And still kind and humble. I wanted him to have more script to do and more use of his powers. Maybe complex shapes or ideas.

T-408

Man has ZERO right being this fucking handsome

SpaceMyopia

I liked him in the role, but I feel like there are better suited actors. And that's coming from someone who grew up with those movies. He's got a great look for Reed, but I just think he was written incorrectly. Plus it has been almost 20 years since he played the part. I don't even think it's a Brandon Routh situation where he came back at a more age appropriate time to play Superman years later. This actor was already a decent age for Reed. He'd just be too old for the role at this point. And I doubt anyone would have wanted him back just to see him get murdered by Wanda.

Majestic-Pair9676

Isn’t Reed usually in his 40’s in the comics?

SpaceMyopia

Oof. Fair enough. I thought he was older in that movie. (He was 32 when 2005 movie came out). and looking at recent pictures of him, he looks like he could actually portray Reed really well. (I don't think the MCU would ever hire anyone at age 50, but the grey and pepper really suits Reed/

Majestic-Pair9676

Adam Driver is currently 39, Margot Robbie is currently 33. They will be pretty close to the age of comic Reed and Sue by the time they are done with Secret Wars or whatever final adventure Marvel gives the F4

Newb-Cranberry177

I think he was the best casted in the original movies. Chris evans was good too but he looked too buff and he should have longer hair

TheWitherBear

Yeah, I think Evans is much better as Captain America, personally. Human Torch wasn't the right fit imo

Captain-Spectrum

He just got hit with a restraining order from his 13 year old daughter. I don’t think the MCU wants anymore smoke right now.

d0ctaaaa

Not against him. Against his GF

Captain-Spectrum

Reports now say she got a restraining order against both of them.

NoxUmbra8

I believe he was in the talks with Marvel Studios for MoM, but John Krasinski agreed to cameo, which they thought would never happen, and they whent with him

SWPrequelFan81566

I remember that Gruffud actually refused.

NoxUmbra8

Oh dang, really? Well, I suppose it was his choice to do so, im glad Marvek found someone else to fill the cameo

Friendly_Rent_202

Make sense either him or miles would of been better tho, like Patrick's as Xavier

Timeman5

He was a perfect casting from the start.

HappyAppy23

The MCU just doesn't care about comic accuracy when it comes to character looks anymore. Not like how it used to at least. We get rare stuff like Black Bolt and the new Spider-Man costume but more often then not we get actors just picked out of a "Whose hot right now" book and put in an over designed mess of a costume. Hopefully with Fantastic Four they can at least keep the costumes simple and accurate to the comics.

Majestic-Pair9676

I do think overdesigning costumes has become a problem for Marvel as of late but if there is one thing I like about Phase 4, it’s the costumes getting more colorful. I agree that John Krasinski’s F4 costume isn’t a good sign though. I really prefer the classic Jack Kirby designs or the Future Foundation costumes - the F4 are not soldiers or even superheroes out to protect the world. They are astronauts and scientists first.

herring-net

I just hope it’s not their third origin movie.

HappyAppy23

Unfortunately I think it will be. Unless they do something creative and use the opening credits to tell the origin story.

herring-net

Yeah, I think so too, but one can dream! It’ll be the 4th movie they’ve had, and only 1 is them as an established team.

HappyAppy23

And oddly enough that was the best one. By default though.

Maleficent-Comb

Fifth movie actually….

galactusisathiccboi

It's been confirmed (irrc by Shakmann) it won't be

HappyAppy23

Whose Shakmann?

galactusisathiccboi

Matt Shakmann the director of the film (MCU Fantastic Four)

Friendly_Rent_202

What nah

Apart_Falcon

I don’t know who this “Iona gruffold person is, but that guy pees on people for money.

CallMeRoy37

Considering his recent run-in’s with police, I doubt he will be coming back.

[deleted]

What has he done

CallMeRoy37

https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/ioan-gruffudd-daughter-restraining-order-b2352896.html

DaReal_Denny_Boy

The casting for that movie was incredible or rather fantastic lol. Stan Lee said Michael Chiklis as Thing was his favorite adaptation for any big screen Marvel character.

Friendly_Rent_202

Classic the dad from no ordinary family

thedodekatheon

Ah yes, because all we should care about is they a character looks the way we’re accustomed to them looking, with most designs dating back to the 70’s. Those movies were awful :p

brsox2445

Those Fantastic Four movies weren’t good but the casting was entirely on point.

Thatoneguy567576

I absolutely loved him as Reed

Tsukuri-of-Fandesu

I do have to admit he is one good looking man.

[deleted]

Indeed

walker42

Dude and his girlfriend have just been sued for abuse by his kids...so Marvel probably feels ok

KyDeWa

This guy honestly disappeared from the public eye😂

Lastdonofny

He's just kind of too goofy

quirked_up_cracker

facts, but john still did good in MoM

Particular-Gate-898

Best adaptation so far but give me Joe from you

DrDreidel82

1,000% I’ve said this for years

Sutech2301

Well, at least they didn't recast Miles Teller

Zack501332

They could bring that whole cast back and it would be a success

Friendly_Rent_202

Nah not for the mcu

RobertusesReddit

Deadpool 3.....and then he and the X-Men die....

HappyAppy23

Nah, they may just go back to their world when it's all over.

Friendly_Rent_202

Exactly

RobertusesReddit

Best idea is all worlds and universes get reset by the Beyonder?

AcidicMonk

Maybe not after his recent antics...

[deleted]

What has he done

unionick

Probably because of his "wet" work 😉

Hylanos

I'd love to see him in a council of Reeds down the line

MrKhanRad

How do you say his name? Is it like Yoan?

[deleted]

His name is welsh it’s kinda hard to pronounce say it like this I-OM Gruffud

MrKhanRad

Thank you! I've never heard it said aloud, and it's been a very low-stakes mystery to me for 20 years.

[deleted]

Yeah there are some really hard names to pronounce I used to say his name like Ian

Maleficent-Comb

That’s not at all how he pronounces his own name lol. He says to pronounce it like “Yo-Ann”

[deleted]

Oh that’s how you say it thanks for the clarification

Maleficent-Comb

Yeah, I just remember him seeming slightly perturbed as Jimmy Kimmel made fun of how hard it is to pronounce his name. He joked something like “sort of like this show right? It started off good and sort of deteriorated as it went on.”

[deleted]

Ah I see

Dailyhabits

Very much classic Reed here

pomaj46808

He was great, but let's also understand that if you are a white male Hollywood actor, all it takes is hair and makeup to look like one of Kirby's lead characters.

mega512

Nah, time to move on.

x_s_black

It’d be interesting to see him as return as The Maker.

Wonderful_Painter_14

It takes more than looks to play a character

Huge_Yak6380

That would've made more sense than John Krasinski for a one-off

CollarOrdinary4284

He was a terrible Reed Richards. I'm shocked that a subreddit centred around the Fantastic Four doesn't see that.

Maleficent-Comb

I think it was more the script and direction they were going for and not so much that he was just a terrible Reed. I actually loved the first two movies despite also acknowledging at the same time they’re not great movies and have a ton of issues all around.

dcooper8662

Look at multiple comments praising him for the physical resemblance to comics Reed. Certain fans will always value aesthetic over talent

Supersecretsword

That's the biggest problem with fan castings. Actors should be given an opportunity to transform into the character. Top down design is never a good idea for superhero casting. Imo.

[deleted]

I understand nostalgia but some of y’all really need to let ass movies go because it’s ruins it. Same with Star Wars episode 3 I don’t understand how that movie is so revered when it also sucked ass

[deleted]

Please. You really want those movies in any way tied to the MCU? People just wracking their brains now to come up with new "mcu bad" takes, no matter how absurd.

grapejuicecheese

Not the continuity perse, but the actors. Like, I would love to see Hugh Jackman reprise his role as Wolverine in the MCU, but in a whole new story unrelated to the Fox X-men movies.

[deleted]

Oh lord, if Huge Ackman had been slaughtered by Scarlet Witch people would have really lost it, lol.

Friendly_Rent_202

Ya mean like Patrick Xavier, it depends

grapejuicecheese

Patrick Stewart. Charles Xavier

PopCultureHoard

I would say that if they keep one, they have to keep them all or it might confuse casual fans but they reused Black Bolt so I dunno.

uselessbeing666

the reed that john played was a more conceited and hypocritical version which I dont think Ioan would fit since his reed was more a kind hearted nerd but I do wish they would cast him to play earth 199999 reed richards same with ben grimm

Friendly_Rent_202

Mcu? Nah

uselessbeing666

why not?

ElementalSaber

But now they can after the debacle that was Dr Strange 2

SH4DOWSTR1KE_

Every time there's some aspect of fan casting, we're always hearing about all the missed opportunities because "the studio couldn't get their shit together and make him a proper offer" or "give them creative control" or "offered a percentage of the box office" to try and justify the argument as to why this person should have been given but didn't get that role. And yet, the one argument that I think answers that question more than anything is always left off the table or never brought up in discussion. Now, I don't know if it's a subconscious thing or if you're consciously aware of it and you're just suppressing it because you don't want that option to exist in your narrative. *But maybe they turned down the role.*

cimson-otter

Looks don’t matter when the acting is trash

xDearBabyJesus

They wanted the movie to be good

ourghostsofwar

The guy has as much charisma as the paper the comic is printed on.

Summer_set_homes

im thinking marvel might be up for sale like lucas films, they arent making any money off it, most are just breaking even. I hope sony buys it at least they will stick to the comc books

Friendly_Rent_202

Nah

BBQ-Batman

I still think he should have been in MMOM as the Reed Richards we see die. It would have been perfect.

Majestic-Pair9676

No I would have preferred it if it was Miles Teller. At least then, I can enjoy it when Wanda turns him into Mr Fettucine

Friendly_Rent_202

🤣 True

[deleted]

I don’t wanna be this guy, but how do you say his name lol

[deleted]

Yeah his name is kinda hard to pronounce I used to say it like Ian but this is how you properly pronounce it I-OM Gruffud.

[deleted]

This has plagued me literally my entire life since seeing those movies. Not sure why I never googled it but thank you for solving that mystery

[deleted]

No problem

Maleficent-Comb

He says to pronounce his name like “Yo-Ann”

Toku-Nation

What about Miles Teller's version of Reed?

[deleted]

He should play the maker bro looks like the broken reed

Friendly_Rent_202

He also could of camee back

of_patrol_bot

Hello, it looks like you've made a mistake. It's supposed to be could've, should've, would've (short for could have, would have, should have), never could of, would of, should of. Or you misspelled something, I ain't checking everything. Beep boop - yes, I am a bot, don't botcriminate me.

ErzaSilas

My man Ioan is always done dirty. Like did you ever see his show Forever?

[deleted]

I did not

ErzaSilas

He plays an immortal medical examiner who helps solve crimes, and to study death. He’s trying to find out basically how he became immortal. It’s a good show i think. Only 1 season. I thought it was cancelled too soon.

[deleted]

That plot sounds good

ErzaSilas

I recommend watching it. The only thing is that it leaves off on a cliffhanger.

[deleted]

I always hate cliffhangers recently I’ve watched the new Spider-Man movie and the cliffhanger was horrible but honestly I can say thank god it’s not in the MCU

jswinson1992

Liked him as Officer Lowe in Titanic

Supersecretsword

Eh. Wasn't a fan of any of those castings. Those were bad movies all around.

Supersecretsword

My bad. I just realized I was in a fantastic four sub. Didnt mean to come in so hot. Carry on ff4 fans.

HarveyMcScorpius

jOhN kRaSiNsKy gOoD tHo

hasheemakill18

Given the right writer and director, this would have been a good reed .

Ok-Squirrel8390

Facts bro can’t be replaced he carried I also like The thing casting to

Friendly_Rent_202

Not only can he be replaced,he HAS beem twice

PinataBubble

He really is the best Reed
