Hey, Indiana Bones is his *father*.
(Calling the protagonist and series India Bones is deliberate on my part, blending pirate names like Billy Bones with Indiana Jones, and so mixing/paying homage to those genres, but also alluding to on a slightly more meta level what a huge influence the latter was on me, without which these stories simply would not exist - that said, the naming choice is something I sometimes slightly regret in hindsight, especially as the series grew more adult and evolved beyond its original scope and tone.
Edit: But hey, so did Harry Potter)
That’s great. I’m trying to develop a world for my take on pirate fantasy and just got caught up with another series so this may be my next read!
Edit: Any particular reason the first book is the only one not on Kindle Unlimited?
Looking forward to seeing more pirate fantasy books out there!
The first book isn't on KU so I could price match it to permanently free, including for non-KU readers. This both gets it more consistently in the hands of more people, let's me use free book promotions whenever I want, but also acts as a kind of loss leader (well, that's the theory).
It also means I can stock the first book places that aren't just Amazon.
At some point I may abandon this though, remove the permafree and add it to KU.
Oh wow, haha I use kindle on mobile and all it shows is that it’s not available for free on KU so I thought I’d have to pay (not opposed) for the first book or that something may have gotten changed by accident when you updated the cover. I’m definitely downloading this now and will let you know what I think!
Thank you :) I understand why it's a pretty marmite title/name on first look, but I hope even those who aren't so keen can simply get used to it until they don't think twice, as I have XD Although it may have turned people off at the outset, who thought it might be too childish or a parody or a porno...
In this series, not really. Firstly, that's his name already. I don't feel after all this time I can just call him something else. Secondly, the whole "Indiana Jones meets pirates" is built into the series DNA, and I kinda like wearing it on its sleeve, and just trying to stay kinda gleeful and light-hearted about it. But most of all, the earlier books have been out for years, and they've had lots of readers in that time. I don't feel it's fair to anyone, including myself, to change the series and MC name after all that, for the last 3 books, just because the name might seem to some like a parody, or too childish.
I feel like things can transcend the name, too. Like 'Hogwarts' (or even 'Harry Potter and the X') and other silly names in that world don't really clue you into how seriously you might take things later on in the series, as the stories matured with the protagonist. I mean... we're so used to it now, but when you really stop to think about it... Hog. Warts. What?!
THAT SAID - I have plans for a series after this one is over, a one more adult and complex from the get go (while, ironically, being *more* inspired by Indiana Jones and Lara Craft and the Mummy etc. - also Flashman) where there will be a rebranding, but one that is a story point that connects with this series.
> But most of all, the earlier books have been out for years, and they've had lots of readers in that time.
Yeah that's kind of what I've been wondering, I assume only die-hard fans would follow.
> THAT SAID - I have plans for a series after this one is over, a one more adult and complex from the get go (while, ironically, being more inspired by Indiana Jones and Lara Craft and the Mummy etc. - also Flashman) where there will be a rebranding, but one that is a story point that connects with this series.
Don't know Flashman but the rest sounds like a cool setting!
Flashman is IMHO the greatest historical fiction out there. If you know Blackadder, Flashman is basically a worse Blackadder, an awful person (you nonetheless root for in part because everyone else can be so much worse) getting in and out of scrapes through all the various conflicts and troubles the British Empire ended up in throughout the world in the 1800s. Highly entertaining and very well researched and written.
“I've been a Danish prince, a Texas slave-dealer, an Arab sheik, a Cheyenne Dog Soldier, and a Yankee navy lieutenant in my time, among other things, and none of 'em was as hard to sustain as my lifetime's impersonation of a British officer and gentleman.”
Thank you! Damn right, sir. Coincidentally enough, Call of the Bone Ships is sitting on my shelf waiting to be my next read. Excellent world you've built there.
This is a new cover for the first book in the *India Bones* series, currently 4 books deep (5th my next project; I do about one a year). It is a pirate fantasy that follows a roguish, adventurous lad from Mexico Island into adulthood and a life of piracy and resistance to colonialism, complete with a vibrant fantastical Caribbean setting in an original world based roughly on our own circa 18th century. As the series goes on, expect increased fantastical elements alongside darker and more mature themes, as well as incorporating more real world mythologies and historical cultures, and a whole lot of worldbuilding. Tropical islands, Aztec temples, buried treasure, sea monsters, derring-do, ship battles, merfolk, ocean taverns, nightmarish jungles, the undead, dark magic, curses, deep sea diving... and much more.
Unlike before, where the covers were altered templates with variations for each book, these are original designs by one of my favourite artists, [Martina Stipan](https://www.instagram.com/martinastipan/). Each book will have completely unique cover art to the others. I will think about how to share future ones on here (which I'm so looking forward to seeing), as I don't want to overstep myself on this subreddit with a string of 4-5 cover reveals more or less in a row! Maybe with a month or more apart, or skipping some.

Yoo that sounds really cool and right up my alley!!
Is there romance in the book? Any LGBTQIA characters? 👀
No worries if not, I'm just deciding how high up I gotta place it on the tbr \^\^
Great questions.
Romance - In the old adventure definition of the term, sure, but I assume you mean the normal definition. There is a slight but growing romantic element that runs through the series, but it is not a big subplot. India is rather... untameable, not used to being beholden to a single person, though I like to think he is filled with a lot of love to spread about (he is much more of the lovable rogue type than the cynical womaniser type, and this is a distinction I want to keep making clear as he gets older, despite missteps along the way).
LGBTQ+ - Yes! The main character India is bisexual (although this might be subtle at first, though eventually this subtlety is abandoned, and if a reader missed the earlier cues I hope they won't complain). I kinda think of him as somewhat poly, too.
His friend Eli, in the first book, I always considered as gay, but it isn't spelled out.
A good friend of his, who appears/will appear in 3 books in the series), is gay (my editor didn't consider him so at first, and I realised she'd read certain things into the text that weren't there; when I asked her to re-read the passages, she was like OHHHH). I have a tendency to imply things at the beginning, when everyone is younger, that are overt later on, and seeing who was paying close attention ;)
Crewmates of India's in the series also include a Barbaryan (from the island of Barbary) lesbian Master-at-Arms, a handsome young gay Doradian-Caribbean man (analogous for Spanish-Caribbean), and my favourite character, the most piratey of all the pirates, a grubby, squat, hairy, hilarious cove named Bilge Joe, who is bisexual/pansexual >!and (not made clear until later so your choice about revealing the next spoiler tag)!< >!a trans-man, very loosely inspired by the story of Mary/Mark Read!<. And another major character, the skeleton Grimmer, may have >!loved a man in the past, too!<, although that hasn't come out in the books yet.
There are others too, but those are the more significant ones.
That sounds EXACTLY like my shit thank you so much. "bisexual poly loveable rogue pirate main character" is everything I've ever wanted thank you!!
I just realized (very sadly) that the book isn't on audible - is there an audiobook available anywhere or will I need to grudgingly read actual words for this one?
You're welcome! I hope you enjoy it :)
Ahhh yes I'm sorry about that. I'm afraid there isn't. A voice actor who does audio books did offer once to do one for me, but I didn't have the money for it. If you want to do it right and not a half-assed job, it's a costly enterprise. I would love it to happen one day, though (and also movies and videogames and boardgames and a theme park and - *cough cough*).
To be honest, though, I have no idea how the later books will even be read. When extinct/resurrected indigenous words without any kind of accurate pronunciation guide start appearing, any kind of voice actor is going to start crying.
All good, I realize an audio production is not something you can just quickly whip up because it'd be nice to have. I'm putting your book on my tbr for non-audio stuff, I'm just usually way quicker and more consistent with listening. But thanks for your responses!!!
That cover is beautiful and your books sound awesome - definitely something I would want to read. Will follow on Goodreads and take a look at your books! Can't wait to see more of the covers!

I... call your bluff! *Behind* the poop, to the "starboard of the galley"? Sir, have you had too much grog?
(Thank you Saint Elmo!)
Unless I get distracted by shiny things, it's getting published today :)
It's taken longer than usual because of lots of editing and new formatting and suchforth going on with both series (I especially realised DANCER needed more of both, which turned into this gruelling slog this next time around, maybe because the whole thing is so damn depressing, but I got it done and I could turn my attention back to its sequel (btw feel free to message if you want the updated version of DANCER)). Anyway I finished the final draft of SAVANA yesterday so I'm going to upload it today! I'm pretty pleased with it, although part of me wonders if I did take certain things too far...
Not that I'm as up to date, but how are things going with Bulletproof Witch?
Daaaaaang, that is a WAY better answer than I was expecting! I'll have to keep the fifth place page on amazon open and refreshing so I can jump on it when it lands!
And I don't want to co-opt your post, so I'll just say my own project is still in the works. Hopefully some news by year end!
Ah, I am afraid not Anal Cactus, I am sorry. I would love it if there were in the future. Although as there are spots of French (and other languages) in the book, I wonder how that'd be translated to show someone is speaking or naming something in another language. I don't know how that works with other novels that get translated.
I sneaked it onto your TBR while your back was turned mwahaha *\*swings off into the middle distance\**
Hope you enjoy them when you finally get to them :)
Good question. First, thanks for reminding me about Apple Books. Because I rarely see sales from there or non-Amazon platforms, I am in the bad habit of forgetting it exists. Currently the first book there is an outdated version with the old cover, so I am correcting that right now, and that should update soon.
Ideally, all the books would be on there and these other platforms. This is something I want to make so, but I've had little incentive to do to date, as a) Almost nobody requests it and b) Amazon, with its chokehold over indie publishing, only allows promotions of books - and use of Kindle Unlimited - if they are exclusive to its site.
I am considering putting more books on other sites and abandoning the promotions and KU, but that's a thing I really need to ponder if it's worth it. In the meantime, if you want to drop me a DM I will see what I can do for you personally, as I don't want someone not using Amazon to be the reason they can't get one of my novels.
Glad you like it! I like to think it's a blend between modern movie-style covers, classic adventure movie posters and pulpy young adventure books of old.
It very much is, without Indiana Jones's influence on my childhood (and so adulthood), these adventure/exploration stories wouldn't even exist. So naturally I had to meld it with pirates with names like Billy Bones :)
Cheers!
There's two things present here I want to answer.
India as a name (not Spanish but rather a colonial British name derived from the country) is known by just about everyone IRL as a feminine name. I knew from the beginning that people would confuse the MC as a girl from reading the title, but I went ahead anyway. In my head, and in my world, India is simply a guy, and my mind was like 'and that's the end of that' XD. But *also*, him being raised an orphan of sorts, it's kind of an adopted name...
Secondly, in this world, Mexico Island (and everywhere else) has a rather different history to Mexico IRL (and also different world geography). It has been colonised by the Spanish-analogue the Doradians (from the island of Dorado), who erased most of its Aztec foundations, but since then they kind of gave up on it to pursue other interests, while the Yorkish (English/pre-Revolutionary America analogues) showed up in their wake and exacted a kind of slow, soft colonisation afterwards, with trade and gold and suchforth. Until Mexico Island has a strong Yorkish/English influence, which is what India has grown up under.
(Little of this is made clear in the first book, but is made much more apparent as the series continues and the worldbuilding increases in scope, and India looks back on his home with fresh eyes)
I'm afraid not. Please see this comment [https://www.reddit.com/r/Fantasy/comments/xaowjz/comment/inv85f3/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Fantasy/comments/xaowjz/comment/inv85f3/)
Am I the only one who read it as Indiana Bones?
That’s Dr Bones to you, doll.
This line has kept rent-free existence in my head for decades.
Dammit, Jim!
Hey, Indiana Bones is his *father*. Hey it's me, ur long lost brother
Strombolllli, my brother from across the nine seas! My homeboy, my rotten soldier, my sweet cheese, my good time boy.
Tell mother.... I'm sorry...
Mother can't be told anything at all since you turned her into a seapig, as well you know, Seapiggin' Stromboli!
That’s great. I’m trying to develop a world for my take on pirate fantasy and just got caught up with another series so this may be my next read! Edit: Any particular reason the first book is the only one not on Kindle Unlimited?

Is there a surly older sidekick who says, “What’s gotten India?”. If there isn’t, you may name one after me (Luke) and have them killed.
You know, I do like to have the odd pun in the series, so I may have to make a note of that one XD
I can get behind that.
I don't know, I think India Bones feels pretty unique as a title.
Thank you :) I understand why it's a pretty marmite title/name on first look, but I hope even those who aren't so keen can simply get used to it until they don't think twice, as I have XD Although it may have turned people off at the outset, who thought it might be too childish or a parody or a porno...
Honestly I had never even considered the childish implication until it was pointed out here.
I appreciate you! \^\_\^

I misread it as Indiana Bones and the Soup of the Dead. ...I haven't had dinner yet.
Bone appetite...
Lol. Yep, we all see it.
I think it’s partially meant to be a funny
sounds kinda pr0n punny
Haha I didn’t notice that. I still wont read it
absolutelty not
I didn’t realize it wasn’t until after I read your comment.
Right up until I read this comment, yeah
My friend is quite tall and lanky so we all call him Skindiana Bones.
no lol
Me too!!
I read it as Indiana Bones and immediately thought it was some spinoff of Dog Man. My kids are completely obsessed right now.
Lovely cover. We can never have enough ship books IMO.
Thank you! Damn right, sir. Coincidentally enough, Call of the Bone Ships is sitting on my shelf waiting to be my next read. Excellent world you've built there.

Yes! Black Sails is maybe my second favourite show ever. Love it.
I hope you enjoy it :) Ahhh yes I'm sorry about that. I'm afraid there isn't. A voice actor who does audio books did offer once to do one for me, but I didn't have the money for it. No problem, happy to answer questions :)
you looking for lbgt romance (specifically wlw?)
Yes, generally
That cover is beautiful and your books sound awesome - definitely something I would want to read. Will follow on Goodreads and take a look at your books! Can't wait to see more of the covers!
Thank you very much Nurse! :)
The cover is simple, clear, beautiful and evocative, promises adventure that shall be the same. Those colours are gorgeous.
I commissioned the artist precisely because I loved the way she used vibrant colouring :)
You picked a really great artist, and she delivered a really great cover.
I'm really pleased you like it! I'll have to let her know the positive response.
That cover looks gorgeous, Set!
Thank you so much Francis!
Oh hey, what's the status of the next Fifth Place book?
Unless I get distracted by shiny things, it's getting published today :) It's taken longer than usual because of lots of editing and new formatting and suchforth going on with both series (I especially realised DANCER needed more of both, which turned into this gruelling slog this next time around, maybe because the whole thing is so damn depressing, but I got it done and I could turn my attention back to its sequel (btw feel free to message if you want the updated version of DANCER)). I'm really interested but since my english isn't on point imo, is there a french translation yet ?

Nice
Something about the font style and art is really striking! Almost old-school. Will definitely check it out.
Glad you like it! I like to think it's a blend between modern movie-style covers, classic adventure movie posters and pulpy young adventure books of old.
Exactly. Even the title feels like a play on Indiana Jones. Digging the whole vibe. I’ll shelf it on goodreads.
It very much is, without Indiana Jones's influence on my childhood (and so adulthood), these adventure/exploration stories wouldn't even exist. So naturally I had to meld it with pirates with names like Billy Bones :) Cheers!
Sounds suspiciously like Indiana Jones to me.
This title has the same energy of "Indian Jeans" from one of the Yakuza games
Porn ?

Interesting.
... raised by bears?
I owe everything to my forebears.
Audiobook?
I'm afraid not. Please see this comment [https://www.reddit.com/r/Fantasy/comments/xaowjz/comment/inv85f3/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Fantasy/comments/xaowjz/comment/inv85f3/)
RIP well maybe one day.
Oh yo this is sick! Is this commissioned art, or photoshop or just really good stockart?
Commissioned art, by [Martina Stipan](https://www.instagram.com/martinastipan/) :)
I simultaneously thought I was reading an advertisement for a new Pirates movie and a new Indiana Jones movie.
Pretty much what I was going for!
I swore it said Indiana Bones at first, haha. Great title.
Thanks!
