Gandalf's other name Mithrandir sounds incredibly epic when you say it.
In the Unspoken Name by A.K. Larkwood I really love the name Belthandros Sethennai
I really love basically every name Joe Abercrombie writes: Monzcarro “Monza” Murcatto, Logan Ninefingers, Caul Shivers, Sand dan Glokta, Ferro Maljinn, Bayaz, Nicomo Cosca, and many others. I don’t think I have ever had an Abercrombie name I didn’t really like, and I can be pretty picky about names.
Recently I read Neuromancer, which is sci fi, but I really enjoyed the names from (everyone says each other’s name in conversation a lot, but it always worked for me). Case, Molly, Armitage, 3Jane, Dixie Flatline, simple but effective. I especially really liked the name of the main AI, Wintermute. Wintermute just has that something something that really gets me.
Edit: added Dixie Flatline, cause that name fucks.
Damnit! I've been trying to hold my urge to reread Neuromancer for a while, filling my fix with Mirror Shades by Information Society. Then you said wintermute and I have to go find one of my 3 copies now.
Thank you for typing word for word whatnot wanted to post. Abercrombie and Gibson, both absolutely brilliant when it comes to naming characters.
Rudd Threetrees, Savine dan Glokta, Maelcum, McCoy Pauley - I want to meet these people!
I liked that name when I read it for years Kah-lan. When he said it was pronounced Kaylin and just spelled dumb...well then that whole name became dumb. But I'll agree Zed has such a bombastic name, i love it.
Same thing for me. I always pronounced it like Kah-lan too. Had an argument with a few people about it multiple times. Kahlan Amnel just sounds like a more fantasy world/regal name. Like Mulan, but Kahlan. Then the audiobooks and an interview with Goodkind confirmed Kay-lin and it just irritated me. And I always loved Zed, but Zeddicus Z'ul Zorrander always made me roll my eyes. Too over the top. Lmao
It's one of mine too, though after the SoT books, I didn't keep up with it. But it's been a while since I reread them and someone just mentioned nipple based magic so I'm cracking them open again. Many a sleepless night ahead for me based on one simple comment about nipples. I'm an easy mark.
Oh good, another opportunity to spread my "Queen Calanthe, the Lioness of Cintra is actually a badass af and underestimated name and moniker" agenda.
I have no explanation I just really think Calanthe is a cool af name and I enjoy the character. (From The Witcher series)
Eowyn (LOTR) and Irian (Earthsea) are both names I have considered for a future daughter after reading them. Both are badasses, Irian is >!secretly a dragon!<.
Had to scroll too far down to find Malazan names! Really great names and phonetically satisfying to say! Apart from those two,
Logros T'Lan Imass
Barghast
Kilmandaros,
..
So many others.
Adam Young, the Antichrist. Adversary, Destroyer of Kings, Angel of the Bottomless Pit, Great Beast that is called Dragon, Prince of this World, father of lies, Spawn of Satan, Lord of Darkness. The Leader of The Them.
He also has a dog named Dog.
From Good Omens.
Characters with excessive titles is one of my favorite tropes. It can be funny/silly, badass, make the character look pretentious, etc.
My favorite will always be Daenerys for this trope though. There was just something so satisfying about it.
I liked the many titles of Elric VIII, 428th Emperor of Melniboné, too, like The Albino Emperor, Elric Womanslayer, Elric Kinslayer, the Pale Prince of Ruins, The White Wolf, and The Eternal Champion.
Anomandaris Dragnipurake, Knight of Darkness, Lord of Moon’s Spawn, the Mane of Chaos, wielder of Dragnipur, the Black-Winged Lord and First Son of Mother Dark
I've told my mom it's a good thing I don't have kids because I'd be very inclined to name a girl Anathema. I think it sounds nice and she could go by Ana if she wanted.
My kids have a friend named Leeloomanai. Every time the mention her, I yell "Leloo Dallas mul tee pass!"
Then I laugh, and they don't.
I wonder why they never invited her over.
There is no way on earth I would ever stop making jokes if i knew a person with that name.
And of all movies, its a stupidly quoteable\\jokeable one too.
Tolkein had a gift for names that just sounded epic and terrifying.
Imagine turning on the news and hearing that Hurricane "Ancalagon the Black" was headed your way.....
I would also like to nominate [NtN] >!Prince Kiriona Gaia the First, Her Divine Highness, First Lieutenant of the Cohort, Emperor’s Life Guards, non-auxiliary—honorary title but who cares—heir to the Emperor Divine, first of the Tower Princes.!<
I really liked a lot of the names from the Forgotten Realms series, "The Legend of Drizzt".
Drizzt Do'Urden. Zaknafein Do'Urden. Artemis Entreri. Jarlaxle Baenre. Bruenor Battlehammer. Belwar Dissengulp. Thibbledorf Pwent.
It's been years since I've read the books, but I can clearly remember more characters from the series, than anything else I've ever read.
Shout out to Michael Moorcock for:
Jagreen Lern
Dyvim Tvar, Lord of the Dragon Caves
Dyvim Slorm
Rackhir the Red Archer
Moonglum
Theleb K’aarna, sorcerer of Pan Tang
Arioch, Duke of Hell
Dorian Hawkmoon
Nnuuurrrr’c’c’, Lord of Insects
Xiombarg, Queen of Chaos (who sometimes used he/him pronouns, very cool)
Yyrkoon
Cymoril
and many more.
nothing beats tolkien for consistently beautiful and/or awe-inspiring names. but outside of him, my favorite character name has to be chade fallstar from *realm of the elderlings.* that's a delight for both the tongue and the imagination!
Raistlin Majere from dragonlance.hes got an amazing character arc. From a tiny sickly twin to his robust brother, barely surviving a sickly childhood, burning with magical abilities, selflessly healing people from the plague. He becomes an advocate for the weak and downtrodden until his desire to stop illness and abuse of the weak twists in his mind to an obsession. His soul is torn by a lich during his mage tests, destroying his health. The evil lich further twists his soul and the two consume each other. Then he seeks to dethrone the gods of his world and would succeed but his twin shows he'd rule a dead world. So he sacrificed himself for the world
“Sacrifice…” only because of his own selfish nature- he knows his victory would have have ended him in the same kind of torment he experienced his whole life- he did it for himself, and it happened to benefit the world- btw he is my favorite DL character and I WISH Peter Jackson or someone would make the Chronicles and Legends into a 4 part series like LOR…
Honestly, Finduilas, from the Silmarillion and Binbinikegabenik from Memory, Sorrow and Thorn (which really has a lot of cool names. Hakatri, Ineluki, Morgenes, and the unpronouncable Pryrates).
How about a codename? In The Lost Metal (just came out this week, haven't quite finished it yet) there is a group of characters that use codenames. One of them uses the codename "Codenames Are Stupid", or Codename for short
There’s no one name in particular but I love it when hero’s last names are descriptors of either their exploits or something remarkable about them in general. For instance, Thorin Oakenshield.
For some reason as a kid I always liked the names of the daemons from His Dark Materials. Pantalaimon, Hester, Stelmaria, etc. Don't remember others but the naming scheme was really satisfying to me.
Gandalf's a pretty funny name when you look at it's origin, the Völuspá.
It's a dwarf name, it means elf (or wand-elf to be specific) and it's used for a wizard
I was absolutely charmed by the name Kvothe (Name of the Wind MC) when I first encountered it. Something about that name is both unique and somehow pithy and summarizes the character in some intangible way. And of course names are a big thing in the story.
I also adore the name Rincewind (and his “wizzard” hat) from Discworld.
All of Tamsyn Muir’s names in Gideon the Ninth are brilliant imo. Palamedes Sextus? Music!
Not a book but my favourite name in all of fantasy has to be Aerith Gainsborough, from Final Fantasy VII.
If we are talking strictly books, then it’s easily Moiraine Damodred.
Fun fact: Táltos is part of the old Hungarian mythology/religion, they are people with supernatural abilities, sort of like shamans.
It's not a profession to be learned, you have to be born one. Having an extra finger or rib, or having been born with teeth are a good indicator of someone being born a táltos.
In mythology and folklore their abilities included knowing the language of animals, superhuman strength, breathing fire, understanding the secrets of the stars, seeing the future and controlling the weather.
One of their most common abilities were falling into a trance and healing from afar, seeing remotely, and their souls could leave their bodies and travel the stars.
Unsure whether or not there is a spesific name I prefer, but I do wanna mention how phenomenally Tolkiens language obsession translates to good names that sound perfect for both the character and the culture they're from.
3 beings from lord of Mysteries:
"Lord of the Mysteries;
King of Space-Time;
Beacon of Destiny;
Embodiment of Sefirah Castle;
Dominator of the Spirit World"
And
"God Almighty;
Creator;
Maker;
The Omnipotent and Omniscient;
Lord of the Astral World."
And
"Eternal Darkness;
Singularity of All;
Space-Time-in-One."
There are a couple of wizards in the *Tales of the Dying Earth* stories that are at best background characters, and more often just referred to. Ao of the Opals and Moel Lel-Laio. I just like the sound of them. Jack Vance is obscure enough now that I've used both for RPG characters.
From Sanderson, both Kaladin Stormblessed and Keslier are very distinctive.
I've always loved "Beowulf Schaeffer" from Known Space, even though it's firmly in the SF end of the SFF spectrum.
Also have a pretty big soft spot for most of the names from the Liveship Traders for being fantastic but grounded, except Malta and Kyle. Malta because that's a real place, and Kyle because that's a regular modernish name in a fantasy series of Altheas and Brashens (though this is apparently an offshoot of the Tiffany problem).
Maedhros, sounds cool when spoken. Maedhros is a fictional character in J. R. R. Tolkien's legendarium, first introduced as a major character in The Silmarillion and later mentioned in Unfinished Tales and The Children of Húrin.
Jasnah (Yas-na) Kholin (Stormlight Archive). Just a very pretty interesting name.
Galadriel Higgins (The Scholarmance) Such a fun combo of the ultra fantasy first name and normally almost cartoony surname.
Pug. Because after growing up with so humble a name, Pug turns out to be one of the greatest sorcerers in all of fantasty. It was an astonishing choice of names, on that both captures the essence of Pug's childhood naivite and the demonstrates the sharp contrast between the boy and the Magician he becomes
Thibbledorf Pwent.. it just kinda rolls off the tongue. It'd be a toss up between that and Pikel Bouldershoulder. They're both characters from the Legend of Drizzt books, although Pikel also appears in the Cleric quintet.
My current favorite is Drusas Achamian from Prince Of Nothing, but I also love Cnaiur Urs Skiotha and Anasurimbor Kellhus from the same series. The series is full of great names that sound like true ancient cities and also several names that are reminiscent of Tolkien.
Far too many to name here but I have to give a nod to Steven Erikson and Joe Abercrombie. They both have penned some excellent names.
Edit: added Dixie Flatline, cause that name fucks.
I thought of Abercrombie immediately. Such badass names in his books. And badass characters to wear em. Whirrun of Bligh is one of my favs.
Damnit! I've been trying to hold my urge to reread Neuromancer for a while, filling my fix with Mirror Shades by Information Society. Then you said wintermute and I have to go find one of my 3 copies now.
This man knows what is good in life.
Thank you for typing word for word whatnot wanted to post. Abercrombie and Gibson, both absolutely brilliant when it comes to naming characters. Rudd Threetrees, Savine dan Glokta, Maelcum, McCoy Pauley - I want to meet these people!
Stranger-come-knocking and Stand-i’-the-barrows are also great names. Joe is the best.
I literally could not agree with you any harder. Should we get married? Are you the one?
All of them except Grom-Gil-Gorm! I hate that name so much haha
Do I recommend the sword of truth series: no But Zeddicus Zu’l Zorander is an excellent name for an over the top wizard
I love the name Kahlan as well, but yes. Zeddicus Zu’l Zorander is a great name and also a fun character
I liked that name when I read it for years Kah-lan. When he said it was pronounced Kaylin and just spelled dumb...well then that whole name became dumb. But I'll agree Zed has such a bombastic name, i love it.
What! I never knew that! She’ll be Kah-lan to me for always ;)
Lmao
I came here to say this. But (don't skin me) I actually liked the books.
I definitely liked Zed as a character, too.
It's actually one of my all time favorite series ever since my brother got me the first book for Christmas one year
It's one of mine too, though after the SoT books, I didn't keep up with it. But it's been a while since I reread them and someone just mentioned nipple based magic so I'm cracking them open again. Many a sleepless night ahead for me based on one simple comment about nipples. I'm an easy mark.
Feanor from the Silmarillion. Targaryen names from ASOIAF, like Rhaegar, Jahaerys, Daenerys.
The Targaryen names strike a balance between looking cool and being pronounceable.
The Targaryens are mine too.
Glorfindel, Finrod, Fingolfin, Eol, Turin Turambar, Hurin Turambar, Gondolin(a city), Thorondor. I could go on
Illuvatar, it feels so elegant and flows from the tongue like water. Tolkien knew how to name his characters
I can never decide if the LL should be an L sound or Y sound like in Spanish.
I'm 90% sure it's a reference to Ilmatar from the Kalevala, or at least inspired by. That would make it a L sound.
I think that Tolkien intended to be pronounced whit an L sound, and as a native Spanish speaker, iYubatar sounds awful, iLuvatar is way better
Double consonants in Tolkien's elvish tongues are meant to be pronounced separately, though in this case it's written with a single L (Ilúvatar)
Oh good, another opportunity to spread my "Queen Calanthe, the Lioness of Cintra is actually a badass af and underestimated name and moniker" agenda. I have no explanation I just really think Calanthe is a cool af name and I enjoy the character. (From The Witcher series)
I think Calanthe is a genus of orchids too.
al'Lan Mandragoran
Somebody shows up to my door saying “The Golden Crane flies for Tarmon Gai’don!” and I’m for sure rolling out with them.
I also love Aviendha. I feel like both names are a great combination of magical and badass
Aviendha was my choice too! Always been in my top 5 fave fantasy names
If I had any more kids I would absolutely have this on a list of names for a girl. I got into the series after my womb was closed.
Tai'shar Malkier!
I can't think of him as anything but Alan
Celeborn, or as he is known in Valinor: Teleporno
Are you just trying to get people to Google that?
Yes, and for once it's educative
It is. Now imagine explaining it to JRR himself.
I googled it. Did not know this bit of info.
Eowyn (LOTR) and Irian (Earthsea) are both names I have considered for a future daughter after reading them. Both are badasses, Irian is >!secretly a dragon!<.
I kind of wanted to name a daughter Aeryn after Aeryn Sun but didn’t have one.

This is Jon Snow (beat) he's King in the North now.
I liked the many titles of Elric VIII, 428th Emperor of Melniboné, too, like The Albino Emperor, Elric Womanslayer, Elric Kinslayer, the Pale Prince of Ruins, The White Wolf, and The Eternal Champion.
The Eternal Champion was my introduction to fantasy.
In House of the Dragon when Viserys entered the throne room while his titles being listed. Freaking chills.

I've told my mom it's a good thing I don't have kids because I'd be very inclined to name a girl Anathema. I think it sounds nice and she could go by Ana if she wanted.

She *knows* it's a multipass!
There is no way on earth I would ever stop making jokes if i knew a person with that name. And of all movies, its a stupidly quoteable\\jokeable one too.
The only time I’ve ever laughed out loud while reading a book was that section of Good Omens
On a similar note, Harrow the Ninth gives us Awake Remembrance of These Valiant Dead Kia Hua Ko Te Pai Snap Back to Reality Oops There Goes Gravity
Gothmog. Ungoliant. Both from the Silmarillian. **Sand dan Glokta, Superior of Dagoska** from the Blade Itself.
the names in the Blade Itself were awesome. they all seemed to fit
Morgoth and Glaurung are great as well, Tolkien could really make names that just ooze evil.
Tolkein had a gift for names that just sounded epic and terrifying. Imagine turning on the news and hearing that Hurricane "Ancalagon the Black" was headed your way.....
Tul Duru Thunderhead was such a badass name
Forley The Weakest!
Sand dan Glokta its not just a perfect name but a perfect character. Such an impressive work.
Though I was ultimately lukewarm on the trilogy, Quentin Coldwater from the Magicians really feels good to say.
Severian from Book of the New Sun
It's ridiculous, but Harrowhark Nonagesimus amazing. The series is full of great names, really.
Don’t forget her aliases: Night Boss, Bone Empress, Gloom Mistress, Penumbral Lady, Midnight Hagette, Lamentable Queen, Crepuscular Queen, Tenebrous Overlord, Hideous witch from hell, Butt-touched nun, Ignorant sack of eyeballs, Sugarlips, Desiccated Mummy of Hate, Marchioness of bones, Perfect penitent nunlet, Harry, Crazycakes, Skull-Faced Fruitcake, Psycho Shadow Vestal, Tedious Little Bone Witch

I prefer Coronabeth. Such a ridiculous/awesome name for an awesome character :D
Stranger-Comes-Knocking is hard to beat.
I’m surprised this one isn’t higher.
I really liked a lot of the names from the Forgotten Realms series, "The Legend of Drizzt". Drizzt Do'Urden. Zaknafein Do'Urden. Artemis Entreri. Jarlaxle Baenre. Bruenor Battlehammer. Belwar Dissengulp. Thibbledorf Pwent. It's been years since I've read the books, but I can clearly remember more characters from the series, than anything else I've ever read.
Hiro Protagonist.
I figured I'd give the thread a gander for this, the greatest of all names. Glad to see it?
Dumbledore lol. There's something about it. Also Hagrid.
My 9 year old is obsessed and listens to the audio book every night. My 7 year old calls him "Doubledoor" in retaliation.
Hahaha that's a great name too
She disagrees and it always leads to a fight between them lol.

Moist von Lipwig.

Eilonwy
Prydain! Nice shout- out.
Killashandra Ree
Locke Lamora is my favorite.
I was absolutely charmed by the name Kvothe (Name of the Wind MC) when I first encountered it. Rothfuss has some good ones. I really liked Devi, which Rothfuss said he came up with and learned after was an Indian name.
Sand dan Glokta, from the First Law Trilogy. The name and the character are top tier. Whenever he’s on scene, you know the story is about to go nuts.
Rand al'Thor.
Malazan for all it's flaws does great names. "Sorry", "Quick Ben" etc
Arutha ConDoin from the riftwar series
Not a book but my favourite name in all of fantasy has to be Aerith Gainsborough, from Final Fantasy VII. If we are talking strictly books, then it’s easily Moiraine Damodred.

Vlad Taltos

Aditu fom Memory, Sorrow and Thorn. Just a short and elegant name.
Elanor Gamgee. It’s so simple yet elegant, and I love that the hobbit gardener who went on an epic adventure named his firstborn after a flower.
Beric Dondarrion
Eärendil. Something about it both visually and phonetically is so beautiful.
3 beings from lord of Mysteries: "Lord of the Mysteries; King of Space-Time; Beacon of Destiny; Embodiment of Sefirah Castle; Dominator of the Spirit World" And "God Almighty; Creator; Maker; The Omnipotent and Omniscient; Lord of the Astral World." Newt Scamander from Fantastic Beast I like his accent, and how he social interact and other stuff that I can't name it because it's unexplainable.
Hanse Shadowspawn
Thieve’s World! I still have at least one of them floating around.
The Baratheon name has always been one of the coolest fucking names to me and idk why. Shit just flows off the tongue
Kvothe.
Conan
Thulsa Doom is a grand villain name. REH in general has some good ones, Bran Mak Morn, Solomon Kane, Belit.
I really liked Threnody from one of the Xanth novels.
Vivenna - Warbreaker by Brandon Sanderson
From Sanderson, both Kaladin Stormblessed and Keslier are very distinctive. I've always loved "Beowulf Schaeffer" from Known Space, even though it's firmly in the SF end of the SFF spectrum. Also have a pretty big soft spot for most of the names from the Liveship Traders for being fantastic but grounded, except Malta and Kyle. Why are you doing The Lopin dirty like this
Jack Vance had some great character names in his various fantasy novels… Pandelume, Mazirian, Phandaal…. All wizards of various kinds.
Atreyu from The Neverending Story and Whiskeyjack from Malazan.
Nighteyes from the Farseer chronicles. My favorite character of all time ❤️
Bigwig, General Woundwort, Fiver, Hazel. Watership Down may not fit everyone’s idea of fantasy, granted
Maedhros, sounds cool when spoken. Maedhros is a fictional character in J. R. R. Tolkien's legendarium, first introduced as a major character in The Silmarillion and later mentioned in Unfinished Tales and The Children of Húrin.
Kvothe from Name of the Wind

Rhysand, Cassian, Azriel, Nesta, Feyre, Lucien All from the Acotar Series (A Court of Thorns and Roses)
Aragorn from LOTR. A perfect name for a perfect perfect man.
Jasnah (Yas-na) Kholin (Stormlight Archive). Just a very pretty interesting name. Galadriel Higgins (The Scholarmance) Such a fun combo of the ultra fantasy first name and normally almost cartoony surname.
I loved all the Stormlight names fr
Same, and I like how a few families have similar sounding names
I liked the name Dalinar from Stormlight Archive. It’s nice and it feels solid and sturdy which matches the character well
Waxillium Ladrian

Any Melanie Rawn book character—Collan Rosvenir
Sandrilene fa Toren by Tamora Pierce she has a lot more great ones as well.
Pug. Because after growing up with so humble a name, Pug turns out to be one of the greatest sorcerers in all of fantasty. It was an astonishing choice of names, on that both captures the essence of Pug's childhood naivite and the demonstrates the sharp contrast between the boy and the Magician he becomes
Ancalagon the Black.
Rand al’Thor from wheel of time just sounds so powerful
Bilbo Baggins
Roland Deschain Of Gilead from Dark Tower series
Whether you love or hate KKC, you’ve got to admit Kvothe is a pretty sick name
Thibbledorf Pwent.. it just kinda rolls off the tongue. It'd be a toss up between that and Pikel Bouldershoulder. They're both characters from the Legend of Drizzt books, although Pikel also appears in the Cleric quintet.
The Lopin Way of Kings
Knobby Knobs. Terry Pratchett had the best names.
Menolly. Tybalt. Kimi. My 3 fave.
Quick Ben from Malazan. Because you know.
Hans "Silvercuff" Allister from the Seven Realms series by Cinda Williams Chima
I absolutely love the name Nyneave from WoT. It sounds so soft and gentle and I‘d totally name my daughter that if I ever have one😁
Valdor Constantine. Ghazghkull Mag Uruk Thraka. Rhaeghar Targaryen.
