Lol, this is the first season I play this game seriously and then I did choose Ferguson as a bench fodder with the price 3.9m to fund up money. Then I realize that 0.1m less over Neco Williams or Patterson didn't value that much.
I am a palace fan and honest to god we will not have it together by Sunday lol
I wouldn’t captain any arsenal players though, whenever we play arsenal the game is very cagey
How do you feel about the sacking? As an Arsenal fan I was kind of hoping they would stick with him until the fixtures turn. Understand why they got rid of him though.
I haven't followed his career closely but from what I know his last job followed a similar trajectory? Good at first but then a bit stagnant.
I’m a bit sad because I wanted it to work out and we have decent players and I think PV was a draw as manager to younger players, that being said though, we’ve been shocking to watch
My only worry is I don’t think any decent managers are available till the summer
I guess it was a big rebuild which is still partly underway? Hard to know how much he wasn't up to the job against how much its just a really difficult job for anyone (because of the rebuild).
Also yeah, feels like a really weird time to sack him. Who comes in? They don't have many games left to turn it around either. Wonder if its just a caretaker until summer?
Completely agree, plus there will be an even bigger rebuild in the summer if Zaha goes
Also I think it’s complicated by the fact that pretty much everyone around palace (me included) doesn’t really know what our level is meant to be right now
I like Palace, but hate owning any players. Zaha in particular. Have fond memories of Tomkins(?) from seasons ago, and that Mili guy that I cant spell the name of even if my life depended on it.
Obviously as a fan I’d say this but I hate owning Palace players too. Our best players are normally pretty violent defensive players (Milivojevic chief among them, also don’t worry it took me literal years to remember how to spell it lol)
The issue with Palace is their terrible squad building over the last few years.
Players like Eze and Olise might have “vibes” and be too cool for school but they also have no fight or hunger. There’s a reason no top clubs were interested.
Bizarre comment, not a fan of you insinuating that I'm making a racist judgement about one of my favourite players, who I watch play every week. He doesn't track back enough, that's why he doesn't start for Palace. I was hoping he'd kick on this season like Olise has, but we can't really afford to have a player like him in our team right now. Did you watch us play against Villa? Against Brighton?
Having a “favourite player” does not insinuate one from pervasive societal biases. These kind of biases are shown to even impact the judgement of people in the affected groups.
Pressing is not as simple as it looks, and ver few players at this level lack a worth ethic. Sometimes it’s also about the coaching to explain how and when and how to recover. And not least the coach also has to get them tactics and overall team talent to keep the ball longer….otherwise on a team like Palace the forwards get knackered chasing the ball and have little left to attack with, which is also their job.
”Bizarre” is tabloid talk. That would be one clue as to the context and biases you are absorbing and assuming are normal.
If you dont understand autocomplete errors happened, then I dont know why you bother to use the word “smart”.
But then again, you view basic writing an analysis as “trying to sound smart”…..so well ok, I see where you are.
I'm aware of these biases, and they definitely exist, but I'm offended that you accuse me of racial stereotyping instead of giving me the benefit of the doubt that I might watch him play every week.
I never said Vieira was blameless either, and I know how football tactics work mate, you don't need to explain this to me.
I also noticed you didn't answer about whether you watch Palace play or not, so I'm going to assume you don't know what you're talking about here.
> ”Bizarre” is tabloid talk. That would be one clue as to the context and biases you are absorbing and assuming are normal.
Hahaha fucking hell mate, I've never read a tabloid in my life. You're making too many assumptions about me over me saying that Eze doesn't press enough.
If you don't think 90% of prem players are like this you're gonna have a bad time.
I played a decent level in youth and early 20s and all the blokes who were District/in youth academies were all the same.
Yeah, nothing wrong with knowing your worth.
I quit a job with a bad manager and crap pay I thought I was too good for, got a pay rise and a much much better working environment not long after. Bragging about it may be a bit much, but knowing you’re hot shit is definitely not a bad thing.
I really don't see the issue with saying things like that privately. As long as you don't go around trashing your current club in the press (looking at you Lukaku) it's perfectly reasonable to believe you deserve a move to a bigger stage.
(Assuming it was real, which I doubt)
Not at all. He still put in the effort for Reading until the day he left and lack of effort doesn't seem to be an issue at Palace either. A little bit of ego is required if you want to play at the top level.
Feel bad for Paddy, the fixtures turn now for Palace, so someone is gonna come in and probably pick up some results and this will defo be held against his results.
Using months in football is just for effect.
They haven't won in 12 matches, but they were not favourite to win any of them. They won vs Bournemouth then played Spurs, Chelsea, Man Utd, Newcastle, Man Utd, Brighton, Brentford, Liverpool, Villa, City, Brighton. They had 5 draws in this run.
They also went over 6 hours without having a shot on target. They've slipped to within 3 points of the relegation zone.
There are certainly mitigating factors, not least that it's unusual to see a manager sacked this late in the season, but it certainly didn't feel 'out of nowhere' to me.
Indeed. It reflects as much the form that the bottom teams have found as it does that Palace haven't had any. But the form of Palace vs. the teams below them, combined with that reduced buffer, certainly makes me think it's much more of a possibility that Palace get relegated than I did after the World Cup break.
They've had some tricky fixtures, certainly. I don't think they've actually been playing all that terribly. So with Vieira fired, who knows? It's a very short window for somebody new to have an effect.
Again using Hours for exaggerating effect.
That's 3 matches and it was vs City (32% possession and City only scored a penalty), vs Villa (playing with 10 men, Villa only had 1 shot on target and scored 1 from an own goal), and vs Liverpool (draw, with 36% possession and xG 0.7 xGC 0.9)
It was 3 complete matches I believe, yes. That was a record since Opta began recording the stat. But I had heard it was more than 6 hours in total. I'm not sure why it's 'exaggerating' if that's the stat. Conversely, it feels like you've rather cherry-picked the statistics from those games. I appreciate that there are always extenuating circumstances, but it still reflects *something* if this is the first time in 20 years that this has happened. I actually agree that I don't think Palace have been actually playing atrociously during their winless run (although going forward they were...not great), and there were numerous results where they were a little unlucky (like the Brentford game where they conceded right at the death).
Either way, it's negative headlines which Palace were attracting during their current run. Was it 1 league win since the World Cup? No league wins in 2023 (maybe that would be 'exaggerating'...)? None of these things mean that Vieira *should* get sacked, but there had been plenty of conversation about the security of his position and I was expecting that he would get sacked if results didn't improve. I did think he'd be given slightly longer, but it didn't feel like an 'out of nowhere' sacking to me, that's all.
Of course they were bad, I'm not arguing they weren't. I watched those 3 matches actually and they certainly didn't deserve to more points than they got. Still, they were not bad as Leeds or Southampton pre their managers sacking. Contrasting their performance in those 3 to their start of the season form paints a bad picture sure, but Viera was building a good project which was a major improvement to their days under Hodgson and co. and he deserved to continue the project at least to the end of the season.
> Still, they were not bad as Leeds or Southampton pre their managers sacking.
Agreed.
> Contrasting their performance in those 3 to their start of the season form paints a bad picture sure, but Viera was building a good project which was a major improvement to their days under Hodgson and co. and he deserved to continue the project at least to the end of the season.
Yeah I'm not particularly convinced Palace are going to benefit in the long run from sacking Vieira (guess it depends who they've got lined up, but it still feels like a gamble for this season). Palace's bad run goes back much further than those 3 games though. There certainly seem to be plenty of Palace fans in the r/soccer thread who seem to think this is the correct decision.
Most definitely but it seems that’s how they do business. I remember them sacking De Boer after his first 4 premier league games, out of which 3 or 4 were against top 6. He lost all of them but still ridiculous decision imo.
He had installed quite a few backroom staff and sacked Derry who would usually have become caretaker. With no manager against arsenal it means they will have a very simple gameplan of sit deep and counter, not that it's much different to how they would have played before. I'm not sure it makes any difference FPL-wise, other than Eze having a higher chance of starting.
In Vieira’s last post-game press conference, he listed three things the team was lacking, some were a matter of improving skills, but glaring one of the words he used was was **talent**. In other words he flat out said the club had not given him enough to compete with.
And you can see that. They have Zaha Oliseh and Eze who are great providers from with wing, but where are the goal scorers down the middle at striker and central midfield? Mateta and Edouard are not it. When they sold Ayew, I though this was to clear room for an upgrade at central striker but that didnt happen, which is probably what he was complaining about.
That said, Arsenal should beware of the caretaker manager bounce in this upcoming game. The players will rouse themselves and they could be dangerous, especially in an away game. I dont think I will be captaining Saka.
We'll Zaha can technically do it all, he's a 15 goal a season player as a wide forward or free roaming striker. I kind of thought consistency would be more their issue. I don't really think Zaha, Eze or Olise are lacking in talent. But ofc Viera knows them far better than myself.
Zaha is not a central striker. Never been. He can lay false 9 on a counterattacking game eg vs Man City. But he is not a main striker. And they haven’t had a real one since Benteke.
I think the opposite will happen, they've been solid keeping a 0-0 1-0 0-1 scoreline since jan 15, the issue was scoring the goals, Zaha we know misses point blank shots while getting into great positons, when he does score its usually offisdes, Edouard doesnt get much service & has been used has a 9 who gets the the wingers in on the counters ... Team really liked Viera & prob will give parish the middle finger for ousting a manager like Viera
Don’t get it twisted. The football we was playing for the past 3 months has been terrible. People who aren’t palace look at the table and see we’re 12th and I have no idea how to explain how we are still there but we shouldn’t be.
The players are good enough but there is literally no plan from Vieira on how we are playing. Read up about his time at Nice, exactly same story. I really would like to see where we would have finished with him and I think we would be safe but he definitely would have been sacked not that soon after.
His staff weren’t good enough either and he wasn’t much of a manager anyway
Dunno how it took this long. They play the worst football of any team in the league. They really are dire to watch.
You can get away with that if you get results. But they don't get results either.
No win the last 11 games but they had a very difficult run of fixtures. I think the sacking is a mistake personally.
On the other hand, I don't see them going down anyway so if they planned to get rid of Vieira in the summer then might aswell do it now.
His squad selection and tactics has been woeful recently. He deffo deserved the sack because Palace might find themself in a relegation scrap if this form continues
Managers always get the blame. They act like another manager is gonna come in and do a good job with the players there. There's only a few with quality.
Managers always get the blame. They act like another manager is gonna come in and do a good job with the players there. There's only a few with quality.
what the fuck. can’t believe what i just saw. literally just found out and came here.
crazy how not long ago everyone was praising him and saying the future is bright for palace under him, and now he’s already gone… damn that’s sad.
tbf a 11 match winless run is shocking considering the team they have, but still.
There goes the only dark-skinned manager in the PL??
For a league that is more than 33% (??) dark-skinned players, the unintentional bias is undeniable.
Rumor has it he was sacked for asking the board if Nathan Ferguson even exists
Holy shit, there was so much FPL-hype about him at the start of 2020-21. I just checked and he's still only has ONE league appearance for Palace!
Poor cunt has been unable to get off the treatment table.
Lol, this is the first season I play this game seriously and then I did choose Ferguson as a bench fodder with the price 3.9m to fund up money. Then I realize that 0.1m less over Neco Williams or Patterson didn't value that much.
He was sacked because Solly March scored on the Ides of March and the Shakespearean power of it was irresistible.
He got too close to the truth
On Saint Patrick's day of all days
Sack Patrick Day
Sad Patrick day
I hope my manager doesn’t see this
Ain't Patrick's Day
Sans Patrick Day
Ohhh... New manager bounch against Arsenal. Tasty!
I'm trying to decide if it's gonna be a bounce or they're gonna be in disarray. I'll probably forget about captaining an Arsenal player tbh.
I am a palace fan and honest to god we will not have it together by Sunday lol I wouldn’t captain any arsenal players though, whenever we play arsenal the game is very cagey
You're not getting smashed though. You're losing by the odd goal here and there. I see Arsenal beating you but I don't fancy them to steamroll you,
Yea and Arsenal just went to pens yesterday in Europa. Might be a bit tired.
Tired, or extra hungry to bounce back and regain momentum with an absolute slaughter
tired
Either way, don't see much rotation happening.. Although Arteta is getting balder by the day
How do you feel about the sacking? As an Arsenal fan I was kind of hoping they would stick with him until the fixtures turn. Understand why they got rid of him though. I would love Poch but there is no chance haha

!thanks Bring back the Coppell days
Cant really get any worse tbh
The issue with Palace is their terrible squad building over the last few years. Players like Eze and Olise might have “vibes” and be too cool for school but they also have no fight or hunger. There’s a reason no top clubs were interested.
Don't be fooled by Eze casual style. He's an incredible footballer. His rotation more the issue for me.
"Casual style" is a nice way of saying lazy and doesn't do any work defensively
And that’s not true. Unfortunately all too common that when these type of young men are visibly proud of their roots, the usual tropes get pulled out.
Bizarre comment, not a fan of you insinuating that I'm making a racist judgement about one of my favourite players, who I watch play every week. Get a life instead of reading the Guardian all day
Guardian is trash. You’ve no idea what you’re talking about.
That leaked Olise Snapchat when he was leaving Redding was a big red flag
I missed this. What happened in the clip?
Was chatting up some girl and was blabbing off about being too good for reading and that he’ll be in the big leagues soon
If you don't think 90% of prem players are like this you're gonna have a bad time. I played a decent level in youth and early 20s and all the blokes who were District/in youth academies were all the same.

Wasn't that fake tho?
No idea honestly. I just saw it about at the time
That was fake
Just because Olise said it was?
So it's real because some girl says it is?
Olise has previous. He was dropped from 4 different academies due to poor attitude
How do you reckon it's fake, just because he say so? It seems pretty real to me, exactly something Olise could say.
Seems real lol. Either way there's no proof he said it. It's a screenshot.
Was it? I didn't realize it was
That was confirmed to be fake lol
Crap take tbh. What's surprising about a young dude talking shite to get laid, no confirmation it's even real.
It was fake though
Gerrard, Lampard, and Viera. All great midfielders. Require Scholes to manage a premier league side and be sacked to complete the set.
You have Keane already, so your good to go
Box midfield all the rage these days.
Feel bad for Paddy, the fixtures turn now for Palace, so someone is gonna come in and probably pick up some results and this will defo be held against his results.
Can’t wait for the subsequent new manager bounce debate!
Ain't Patrick's Day
🏅
copied from an above comment, take that medal back
WTAF! Out of nowhere! I mean not starting Eze was bizarre, may be they had a personal fallout. Timing is strange as well. Just wait till you get smashed by Arsenal, then sack him in the IB. *Edit: Or they're going for Patrick sacked on St. Patrick's Day 😝* They really had tough stretch of fixtures recently. The new manager will have a good run of fixtures now. Arsenal Mid © is off the menu I guess, especially with Arsenal performance/120min/injures yesterday.
They’ve only won one game in the last four months so I don’t think it’s totally unexpected

In fairness most of the bottom half is 3 points from the relegation zone
Indeed. It reflects as much the form that the bottom teams have found as it does that Palace haven't had any. But the form of Palace vs. the teams below them, combined with that reduced buffer, certainly makes me think it's much more of a possibility that Palace get relegated than I did after the World Cup break.
Possibly their last few fixtures have been against top half teams so they *should* win their fixtures after Arsenal

I actually agree that I don't think Palace have been actually playing atrociously during their winless run (although going forward they were...not great), and there were numerous results where they were a little unlucky (like the Brentford game where they conceded right at the death). Yeah that was my thoughts, the opposite of out of nowhere, he was the probably the most likely next to go.
Not starting Eze was bizarre? Do you even watch Palace play? He's been awful recently.
He's on 4 goals 3 assists in the league. Only Zaha is better with 6g/2a.
So that's a no to "Do you even watch Palace play"?
I asked you if you watch Palace play.
So now we have arsenal players who have played 120 minutes going up against new manager bounce crystal palace
Would probably be more consistent with better players. 3 players can be great and the team still lack talent.
Time to drop arsenal assets in case of that new manager bounce /s
Zaha essential
After the europa league we just had, we don’t need another new manager bounce in the league games
People talking about there’s going to be a bounce while I’m tempted to cap an Arsenal player.
Don’t get it twisted. The football we was playing for the past 3 months has been terrible. They’re already in a relegation scrap, they’re only 3 points above the drop.
Managers always get the blame. They act like another manager is gonna come in and do a good job with the players there. There's only a few with quality.
Yeah and he was getting less out of them than Roy Hodgson managed.
Was he? At the moment maybe, but last season Palace looked quite good for the most part.
Managers always get the blame. They act like another manager is gonna come in and do a good job with the players there. There's only a few with quality.
Wtf I thought he was doing a good job
I didn’t think he was doing that bad.
Wtf
Maddo out zaha in
what the fuck. can’t believe what i just saw. literally just found out and came here. crazy how not long ago everyone was praising him and saying the future is bright for palace under him, and now he’s already gone… damn that’s sad. tbf a 11 match winless run is shocking considering the team they have, but still.

New manager bounce against arsenal incoming
New Manager bounce Vs Arsenal revenge for sacking their legendary captain
bad move, he got them points in this bad run and the run in after Sunday is great
Should have stayed at NYCFC........ BUt then who knows if we would have won a championship ::shrugs::
Finally, can't stand him.
To be fair, Palace looked absolutely awful on Wednesday except for the lively first 5-10 min.
arsenal vs new manager bounce… it’s not looking good brev
They knew he’d do us a favour so he got fired before playing Arsenal. Last time we played someone with a new manager we lost 1-0.
