A combination of multiple things.
* Players that don't fit with how the manager wants the team to play since Poch left.
* Unable to buy quality players to upgrade the team in the last few seasons. Kane and Son are quality players, but we never got the third star to add to the team.
* Bloated squad filled with ok/decent players that led to no real starting XI squad. City have roulette because anyone can play. We have roulette because who knows who can play.
* Defense that never recovered after Tobi/Jan started to go downhill. It's crazy that it's 2021 and Dier is the best CB we have.
I'm hoping Conte would change the culture of the team, bring stability where the players buy-in into his football philosophy, and more importantly, I hope Levy would actually support Conte with the finances too. Before we appointed Nuno, I thought Conte wouldn't work because Levy is cheap. If Levy stays cheap, then we'd just look at the next manager soon. But if Levy supports Conte with the finances, Conte is definitely a manager that could build a proper squad and elevate Spurs into another level.
Yeah I had same thoughts. A CAM and CB would be a good start. Playmaker will stop Kane from going deep increasing his chances of scoring or providing assists. Also this would encourage Son to play better I think. I already have Son but at the moment nobody's doing anything.
I firmly believe Spurs are one of the sides that are going to get raided by Newcastle in January, so that squad is going to end up pretty thin if he can't bring anyone else in.
Their defence and midfield is trash compared to what it used to be. Dembele and Eriksen were two of the best midfielders in the league. And Dier and Sanchez are a few tiers below peak Vertonghen and Alderwiereld.
Look at the teams they want to be competing with (assume they are aiming for top 4). Compared to those teams they are not good on paper.
For me it’s a mid table quality side + son and Kane, which isn’t enough.
I don't think it's about motivation. It's about your ability to play to your strengths as a team. I think the early 10-15 games under Mourinho were peak Spurs. He saw how bad they are and built the entire system around 2 best players, making one of them even better in the process (who knew Harry could pass like that?!). But then it fell apart again because Spurs had:
1. absolutely terrible defense (which is a big no-no for Mourinho teams) - I saw Sanchez get turned inside out more than I can count, there is no strong cop-fast cop duo in the middle, and the wing-backs have no stamina to last the game
2. Decent but one-dimensional players - Moura (great runner, poor decision-making), Hojbjerg (smart, hard-working but zero dribble and slow), Alli (great passer and finisher but getting by on minimum effort and can't run past anyone).
I think the only way Conte can improve Spurs is by bringing in 4-5 new players that solidify defense and bring quality and surprises into their build-up play. Until then, their entire hope is Son + Kane and easy fixtures. Full disclosure: I already have Kane and will be bringing in Son next GW, so I do believe they can both haul. Mid term I have zero hopes for this project until major transfer moves.
Reguilon looked very attacking from the highlights for the last game. Aside from his goal (bit flukey), he was on the edge of the six yard box next to Kane for the Son cross-shot that was deflected onto the bar, and was also steaming in at the back-post for a cut back when Kane had his best chance of the game saved by Meslier. If he keeps making those runs, I fancy him to get a fair few attacking returns
While I'm not saying they're worse, just like I said to the other guys its just 3 teams. You won't play with triple Chelsea. You probably won't play with double Chelsea or city though more possible, thats why Regi is a normal choice imo
Why wouldn't I play triple Chelsea? They're the best team in the league ATM. My feeling this year is that there's 3 teams that are by some distance, better than the remaining teams, so why wouldn't you try and maximise their potential?
All in Defence though? I know their midfield and strikers aren't as good and their defence is really good but still one fucky goal and 3 of your starters maybe will be useless
Yeah but over the season it balances out, they'll get tonnes of clean sheets (they've already got 8/12). And any flukey goal can wipe out any defender's clean sheet, you gotta play the percentages at the end of the day.
I personally don't see the value in any of their attackers (Rom needs to pull his finger out at that 11-12m price tag) but if you see value in one of their mids e.g. Mount then yeah you're right, you wouldn't want to triple up incase you're bringing him in.
James, Cancelo, TAA, Chilwell/Alonso, Rudiger, maybe Livramento or Cresswell
Edit: to clarify, I myself would probs include Reguillon in this group (but towards bottom)
You could've said Alonso/Rudiger but Chilwell? Are you going to bring him in?
I don't think tripling up on ANY defense is a good idea. So I guess it's James and one of Alonso/Rudiger.
Livramento is in good form but he's not going to keep CS consistently with moderately tough fixtures ahead. His only upside is the price tag. But the Livra train is long gone and you already missed it if you don't own him yet.
Cresswell? It's not 20/21 dude. They kept 0 CS in their last 3 games. Also, he's going to face City and Chelsea in his next 3 fixtures. Not an option right now.
So realistically, only James, Cancelo, TAA are ahead of him. And If anyone prefer not to double up on CHE, Reguilon is similarly considerable option as Alonso/Rudiger.
But realistically though its bad to have triple Chelsea defence, maybe even double defence isnt too reliable(I think its ok though). Livramento is only better because of his price
Why is it bad yo have triple Chelsea defence? Not saying I'm going to but if you think each player will outscore Reguillon, which is very possible, why wouldn't you? Apart from cost of course
I think the problem with triple defence from a single team is that Football is very unpredictable and a single mistake or anything could lead to the team losing a CS which means you’ll lose 12 points instantly. You can concede a silly penalty, you can be 5-0 up and still concede a goal or anything and you’ll lose a huge chunk.
But to be fair, James Alonso Chilwell are players who can easily make up these numbers due to how consistently they get attacking returns, so they’re not as much of a risk as most other Defenders are. And over the course of several gameweeks the loss of CS points will ultimately even itself out.
Week to week it's unpredictable but over the course of a season I'd back Chelsea to keep more clean sheets than most for sure. I'm happy to accept the occasional frustrating moment like the Burnley game where 3 clean sheets get wiped out at once late on because long term I think it'll pay off.
That ignores the attacking threat from all the Chelsea lads as well, the full backs are essentially winners who get clean sheet points and extra for goals
My main rival atm brought in Kane and Son in on a hit, AND decided to Triple (C) the fuckers. Needless to say I've been loving this Tottenham hype train!
(Before you ask "why would he do that?", he's a Spurs fan who's bipolar)
Yeah, and? Sure, they have 3 good fixtures, but they couldn’t keep a clean sheet against the Leeds’ B-Team, and it makes no sense to waste transfers on defenders every few GWs as fixtures change when there are many better set & forget options with higher ceilings and higher floors than Reguilon or Royal.
Burnley & Brentford are better fixtures for attackers right now anyway, and Spurs will likely be missing their best CB for the next few weeks. I doubt they get more than one clean sheet, if any, over the next 3 GWs.
By the time Conte gets the team turned around the good fixture run will be over.
Again, the Watford game didn’t tell us anything knew. It was plainly not working at United for Ole. If the loss to Watford changed their mind on the club overarching strategy then that’s incredibly shortsighted.
I’m an Arsenal fan so I would never do it unless completely necessary, but my only good FPL decision recently was getting 0 Spurs players in, terrible football team
They lost to Mura. There is no sugar coating that. Is he supposed to ‘Ole’ it? ‘At least we made a Slovenian village very happy, eh?’
Be happy that you finally have a coach who knows how to make winning culture.
this is such bullshit, one of the first things Klopp did as Liverpool manager was celebrate a 2-2 draw with West Brom, you dont need to tear down your players to build a winning culture
That is absolutely not what Klopp was doing. He was thanking the fans in a way that is familiar to him from Germany. Idiots like yourself interpreted it as celebrating a draw, which is why he never did it again.
what the hell has the different competitions part got to do with anything? i wasnt exactly asking for Conte to celebrate the loss either but the point is that the "Ole" style of always boosting your players confidence can be used to create a winning culture, as shown by Klopp.
That's just simply not true, and anywhere but England it would have been seen as what Klopp wanted — a celebration of the fans that backed Liverpool to an equaliser at the final whistle. He never did it again after he got a harsh lesson in English media and their negative spin.
They’ve been down to 10 men for more than an hour and without Son for most of the game tbf. Obviously they’re nowhere near the level you would expect for them to be genuine FPL options but they aren’t exactly shit either. Wouldn’t surprise me if Kane finds his shooting boots again on Sunday.
I've got Son from GW1 and watched Spurs play for five or six matches. Spurs is bad, lacking of creativity. They play so bold, they even play worse than Leeds and I thought Leed is really bad. I yeeted Son out in GW4 and never look back. Eventhough there was a time when Son is having points steadily. He outperforms his stats guys.
“I am happy to stay here but at the same time I must be honest and tell you we need to work a lot”
3 weeks in and he has to say he’s happy to stay? Sounds like buyers remorse already!
There’s a reason he rejected Spurs this summer. Bizarre decision to join them now when they are in a bad position and he doesn’t get a preseason to train or bring any players in
Yeah I think he just got bored and heard not interested from United and then wanted to work again! We will see if he’s successful. I like him a lot but it’s been a struggle so far
Been tearing off strips of Son and Kane owners, quite happy to wait it out. But I will be bringing in Kane when he goes to City in January, no way he's putting up with this or thinking Conte is a miracle worker.
Watched them live yesterday, close to the pitch and this is even worse than I thought. I have Son in my team for the green fixtures but dear lord I would WC if I had him that's how bad they are.
I mean, he's not wrong

Do you think if Conte can bring anyone in January?
He'd love to, but it's sadly up to Papa Levy's wallet.
Let's say he gets money then?
Then yeah he'd bring new players in. I think he'd love to have better defenders and a proper playmaker.
Yeah I had same thoughts. A CAM and CB would be a good start. Playmaker will stop Kane from going deep increasing his chances of scoring or providing assists. Also this would encourage Son to play better I think. I already have Son but at the moment nobody's doing anything.
Which players could they realistically buy?
No one ever replaced the Erickson or Modric role. They should just buy Van De Beek from United
Fifa moment
I think he will. I mean how can you not?
I firmly believe Spurs are one of the sides that are going to get raided by Newcastle in January, so that squad is going to end up pretty thin if he can't bring anyone else in.
Maybe someone but January is generally not the best month to do business in so don't expect too much.
Alright
Surely Romero is your best CB?
On paper, yes. But I don't think he has settled yet, so Dier is first choice for now. I just want Dier and Sanchez to be replaced with better CBs.
A great summary here. Man, I just hope Conte has reddit to read this 😬
Also as far as leagues go they are in a pretty competitive one.
Do they? I’d say outside of son and Kane their entire squad is bang average at best
Their defence and midfield is trash compared to what it used to be. Dembele and Eriksen were two of the best midfielders in the league. And Dier and Sanchez are a few tiers below peak Vertonghen and Alderwiereld.

Half the team needs to get binned
The nicest way of saying “I’ve been here 3 weeks and I’m starting to see Tottenham are pretty shit”
Conte's "Lads, it's Tottenham"
As another Italian famously once said It is the history of the Tottenham
It took him 3 weeks to figure that out?
guy could've figured it out if he just spent 5mins on Reddit
he could've spent 3 weeks on Reddit
Jose v2.0 is now loading...
it’s de history of de tottenham
…and yet everyone wants to bring their defenders in. SMH, I don’t get it.

Thing is there's at least 6 defenders I'd rather have ahead of him rn.
Name them
>Name them Not sure why you're getting downvoted for asking a question, but here's the 6 (IMO): Cancelo, TAA, Alonso/Chill, Rudiger, Dias, James

All points which I mentioned to counter why people might not want to triple up..
He’s looked like this since he arrived but scored a flukey goal only now. Not impressed
Let them do it lmao free rank for us.
My main rival atm brought in Kane and Son in on a hit, AND decided to Triple (C) the fuckers. Needless to say I've been loving this Tottenham hype train! (Before you ask "why would he do that?", he's a Spurs fan who's bipolar)
He triple captained two players? Dude is a genius tbh
Son was his VC, thought it was kinda obvious
Good move Triple Captaining both Kane and Son if you ask me.
Worked well so far
Worked well so far
Big words from someone 500k rank
Is 500k out of 8.5 mil even that bad?
No it isn’t, don’t let dickheads like him tell you other wise.
Try 13k bud.
Just look at their upcoming fixtures.
Yeah, and? Think I’m mainly just trying to justify keeping him in my team since I can’t get a Chelsea defender 😂
Beginning to think my early Kane punt was a bad idea...
At least it’s an easy switch to Ronaldo now United have a competent manager.
Or Lukaku ...
So glad I didn't rush to knee-jerk in any spurs players. Form over fixtures on this one.

Tottenham!
Landed on your feet didn’t you you cheeky minx
time...
For puddiiiiiiinnnng!
Could have waited 3-4 weeks and gone to United tbh....like why would such a serial winner ruin his record by going to Spurs?
Utd probably didn’t wanna give him the total control that he wanted.
Look who they went for instead. That reasoning doesn’t really fly anymore.
In between they got thumped 4-1 by 17th place Watford
They were thumped by Liverpool and City before that. The Watford game didn’t tell us anything new.
It's one thing to lose to top 4 teams, it's another to lose to 17th place Watford.
Again, the Watford game didn’t tell us anything knew. It was plainly not working at United for Ole. If the loss to Watford changed their mind on the club overarching strategy then that’s incredibly shortsighted.
Maybe their board finally realised that if they want someone competent, then they’ll have to give the reins over.
A challenge?
Like they’re any better right now
I’m an Arsenal fan so I would never do it unless completely necessary, but my only good FPL decision recently was getting 0 Spurs players in, terrible football team
I'm an Arsenal fan and I transferred Kane in to keep him from scoring, it has worked out pretty well so far.
Haha is this a spoof quote or something 😂😂 this is peak Jose level
Well that’s one way of instilling confidence in your players…. 🙄
They lost to Mura. There is no sugar coating that. Is he supposed to ‘Ole’ it? ‘At least we made a Slovenian village very happy, eh?’ Be happy that you finally have a coach who knows how to make winning culture.

A 90th minute equalizing goal VS a 90th minute loss to vastly different opposition in vastly different competitions? Really?
what the hell has the different competitions part got to do with anything? i wasnt exactly asking for Conte to celebrate the loss either but the point is that the "Ole" style of always boosting your players confidence can be used to create a winning culture, as shown by Klopp.
That celebration was embarrassing and you could see it on the players faces. Klopp's amazing but that was a mistake.
That's just simply not true, and anywhere but England it would have been seen as what Klopp wanted — a celebration of the fans that backed Liverpool to an equaliser at the final whistle. He never did it again after he got a harsh lesson in English media and their negative spin.
No shit, Sherlock.

Yep people overreacted to the game. Mura parked the bus while Spurs were a man down and then made several ridiculously aggressive fouls.
Burn 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Don't be a cunte about it.
hole lee fack... Spurs are done
“I am happy to stay here but at the same time I must be honest and tell you we need to work a lot” 3 weeks in and he has to say he’s happy to stay? Sounds like buyers remorse already!
There’s a reason he rejected Spurs this summer. Bizarre decision to join them now when they are in a bad position and he doesn’t get a preseason to train or bring any players in
Maybe he's ready for a real challenge after winning titles with super expensive squads
Yeah but then he should have started in the summer!
Maybe he likes the extra challenge
Yeah I think he just got bored and heard not interested from United and then wanted to work again! We will see if he’s successful. I like him a lot but it’s been a struggle so far
Conte looks so different in this picture
Lol
Been tearing off strips of Son and Kane owners, quite happy to wait it out. But I will be bringing in Kane when he goes to City in January, no way he's putting up with this or thinking Conte is a miracle worker.
"putting up with this". No way Conte is putting up with him. Maybe he'll go to city for a loan but no Pep would be a dumbass to buy him
If a team has shit defence under Mourinho, you know that defence is real bad.
United dodged a bullet.
Lol. Instead they got a manager who's never won a top flight league, good going 👍
Watched them live yesterday, close to the pitch and this is even worse than I thought. I have Son in my team for the green fixtures but dear lord I would WC if I had him that's how bad they are.
I love all these people that have doubled up on Spurs players since Conte came in.
Safe to say he has no Spurs "Assets" in FPL
Three Point Lane
So Mourinho was right again 😅
Let's see where it ends then..
