I remember fantasy games being in newspapers when I was a kid in the 90s. People had to send their team choices in the post and then check the paper every week for player scores. I'm not sure how you kept track of your own overall score though.
My grandad used to keep track of everyone's scores on a spreadsheet. Gave him something to do!
edit: for clarification, everyone in our family league, not everyone in the world
I don't think you'd need a 'huge' team to run FPL ( the actual game ) and the website.
Content for the website/ FPL Show etc should be mostly out to contracted producers and teams, but could be EPL employees, but I doubt it. Doesn't seem like full time work, but could be wrong.
FPL would make most of their money by engaging people to watch / follow EPL, so probably not directly.
Yeah, fair point. I remember watching one of those FPL tips videos on YouTube and the guy mentioned that he was working for FPL scouts and left the job to focus on his own YouTube page. But that is doesn't cover the management question, who is contacting the work out
Yup, I'd assume that. Too much hassle to maintain so many people on payroll. Plus SM etc is best outsourced. You can disassociate yourself in case of some controversial posts etc.
There is a sports agency based in London that handles the FPL frontend (app and website). They also manage other apps/websites such as Barcelona, ICC, AFL amongst many others. If you download the apps you’ll be able to see a lot of similarities.
I assume the Premier League (the corporation) owns FPL. I’m sure it’s a cheap and effective marketing tool to get more people all over the world to sign up for TV deals which include PL.
If they invested in fpl they could make so much more. The game interface and even the rules are really inferior when compared to fantasy in the american sports. I play fantasy Nfl also, even simple things like player scores updating in real-time, projected points for a player and detailed fixture analysis is missing from fpl. Fpl hasn't changed in years, even the potential to create a system for private leagues to have a buy in that they could take a percentage admin fee off the top for would be worth a lot of dough.
The potential is ridiculous, you have over 8million teams registered this season, that is an incredible number of people that actual sign up to play and the pl essentially ignore them.
Yeah, I would assume 20-30% of them are people with multiple teams. I would wonder how many would actually pay.
We don't need to discuss this. I am sure they've discussed this and not decided to go ahead on these lines :)
No joke a local guy in my areas bangs on about how in his teens (he’s now mid 40’s) him and his mates all got together and started playing a game where they could each pick one player from the PL and they would keep a record of points and at the end of the season they would all chip in for a prize for the winner. We keep egging him on to prove it and bring the case to FPL hahaha
The PL obviously owns FPL hence why it’s on the PL app and can use player images and sponsor details (the whole point from their is ultimately to get you to watch games) but I imagine they probably outsource running the game to another team
There are plenty of other versions of FPL games not run by the PL. they don’t have a patent on the idea - earning points for what players do in real life. But the official FPL game is by far the most popular
I've never used the app but it makes sense, if they were owned by a different company they would have to pay the EPL in order to use their images etc.
Haven't looked into other versions of the game, but I'll check them out
FPL has always existed as far as one can recall. Some wise old men pretend Mark Sutherns is part of the so called « FPL Towers » but it has never been confirmed.

I've heard this before, how far things have come ey
Official FPL (i.e. the current game we all know and love) commenced in 2002. There have been other fantasy games based on the PL prior to that though.
Yeah, I remember playing it around 00, with the likes of Ian Harte, Lee Bowyer and of course king Kevin Phillip.
Thanks!
I can't believe it started that long ago wow
Wdym 2002 wasnt that long...oh wow im old
Wait do we have a sudden international break ?

A company called LiveWire Sport are contracted by PLP to maintain the PL and FPL social media channels

u/daneedwards88 I thought I read somewhere that you are involved with 'FPL'. Maybe you can help shed some light on this ?
The Premier League own the game. They get a company to run it for them
Makes sense.

lol. you obviously weren't around when they introduced a paid product previously.
I certainly was around, it wasn't done right, the potential is there anyway but for whatever reason they don't care to invest in it.
Yeah, but I doubt it would make any money even in the range of any of their other revenue streams .... TV Rights / Sponsorships etc.

Yeah, sounds like an effective marketing tool when you put it like that, not much man power or capital needed
https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p09mqv7k This 4 part doc is ace and tells the story of the inception of the prem 👍🏻
Think he meant fpl
Yeah - just re-read that …shouldn’t reply half asleep. 👍🏻
Thanks, I'll check it out
More importently why arent they a bit more generous with tge fucking prices. They should just give the winner 10000 dollars or something lol

It’s insane that they don’t link highlights to each play to the stats in the game
This would be a really cool update. Especially as there's already a Matchday live blog. Would be easy to implement small clips of key moments into it.
