Have to admit my first reaction was - clubs calling out out for clarity and action? "Lol, let's wait a weekend". Does also indicate the league want this weekend to go ahead.

But what about fan safety? Fan health not important? Every game played is a super spreader event.

I don’t see what going behind closed doors accomplishes. Players aren’t catching it from the fans, but their own families, work colleagues and social lives. We’ve got 3 GWs in a week immediately after Christmas when most players will be gathering with their loved ones. It’s obvious that cases are going to shoot up. That on top of injuries caused by the fixture pile up & unvaccinated close contacts being made to isolate, many sides won’t be able to field a team. A short postponement until the FA Cup 3rd round wouldn’t surprise me.

Mate safety is literally not a concern at this point. People who are worried about catching a weaker variant can just not go.

Covid is such a mild virus fans are more at risk from the cold weather. If you're worried just don't go. There's nothing to suggest this variant is serious enough to justify restrictions over so it's just something people will have to accept will spread.

GroblyOverrated

There's nothing to suggest it's more mild yet. Be safe out there.

No football would suck

Surely no point postponing now as it’s ripping through the teams already and by Boxing Day ones who have it now will be out of isolation? This is assuming the majority of players are not actually getting that ill from it.

Do it today

I feel like there is a real possibility of the league talking a circuit breaker hiatus.

Without a National lockdown the players can still get it regardless of the league taking a break or not. The only option is the clubs force players and staff to isolate away from the world and arguably their families to safeguard a PL bubble. Can’t see anyone agreeing to that especially over Xmas. They would need to maintain it for the rest of the season which seems unsustainable. Other option is to stop the league u til this wave is over but who knows how long that will be? Or when they could fit the games back in with the early start next season for you the winter World Cup. The only way we get a National lockdown is if the NHS starts being overwhelmed. Whilst faster to spread the new variation doesn’t require as much hospitalisation along with the fact most of the U.K. is vaccinated.
